I cannot get enough of this K9 series. Every book is better than the last. The team works together seamlessly to protect the mystery women that keep popping up in town. The woman are all victims but remain strong in their fight to be free. They are all relocated to this town by an unknown they protect even from the ones they love and trust.
Otto is quite reserved when compared to his high-strung coworkers. That being said, he loses his ability to speak altogether when faced with the newcomer Sarah. She is a beautiful unknown that he vows to help any way he can. He will open his home and heart but will she be able to stay.
Sarah was a prisoner to her family. Locked in, controlled, and promised to another in her brother's bid for power. Someone offered her escape. They presented an opportunity to start over in Monroe. She may have taken the offer but is prepared to escape again if the opportunity presents itself.
I try not to think very hard about why there are so many K9s in one small town with seemingly few traditional police.

This was an exciting romantic suspense novel with possibly the most awkward main characters possible. K9 Officer Otto Gunnersen is great with orphaned animals but tongue-tied when around women. Sarah is a woman on the run from an abusive brother who wants to use her as a pawn and his entry into a rival crime family. They meet in Monroe, Colorado, where Sarah is living with two other runaways.
This is the third in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. We get a chance to catch up with Theo and Jules and with Hugh and Grace. The men are all members of the Monroe police department. The women have all been sent there by the mysterious Mr. Espina.
It doesn't take long for Sarah's brother Aaron to catch up with her. He and her potential fiance Logan Jovanovic almost succeed in capturing her. However, Otto intervenes which leaves Aaron in jail waiting for the FBI to pick him up and Logan on the run. But the danger isn't over. Monroe is an isolated mountain town where three-quarters of the people leave for the winter. Now a blizzard is coming and Aaron has called in mercenaries in helicopters to find and capture or kill his sister. They begin by bombing the only two passes the allow access to the town and killing all the ways to communicate. They also bomb a number of the buildings including the law enforcement building and Otto's house.
The struggles Sarah goes through to rescue Otto's animals and find her way to the town were harrowing. Meanwhile, Otto is trying to connect with his fellow officers and make sure the remaining townspeople are safe.
The story is an emotional roller coaster which goes from the awkward romance to heart-pounding terror during Sarah's flight to town. This was an excellent story which stands alone well but would be enriched by reading the first two books in the series.

Alice has been living under her family's thumb since she was born. First her father, then her brother has dictated every aspect of her life, and now her brother has decided she's his in into a powerful crime family. Then a guardian angel bent on revenge rescues Alice and spirits her to Monroe, Colorado.
Her new name is Sarah and even though she's sharing a house with two women and a bunch of kids, and Monroe is a rather little town, she finally knows what freedom is like. She's even starting to fall in love with the big, tender-hearted, taciturn Viking lumberjack cop who takes care of the lost, sick and injured animals around town.
Then her brother finds her, and for the first time in her life, Sarah is ready and willing to stand up for herself, her freedom, and her future.
This one started with a small bang in the form of Alice/Sarah's escape from her brother, and then the cuteness started. I absolutely loved the first part of this story, the beauty of discovering freedom through Sarah's eyes, and the budding romance between her and the big, Viking-like cop with a mushy heart, Otto Gunnersen. They were so sweet and cute together, especially Otto with his tongue-tiredness, and blushes. Awww.
Granted, the romance felt a bit rushed, especially on Sarah's part, since she's recently escaped a very sheltered life, but it worked somehow. Probably because the two of them were just so incredibly cute together.
But then it all went sideways when the suspense element caught up. The story definitely should've ended after the second kidnapping attempt, if you ask me. Because what happened next, the whole waging war on the small Colorado town, was too much. It just kept piling up and in the end it made no sense (at least to me). What was the purpose of it? Was it all really necessary?
The whole ordeal was too overblown, too over-the-top. It was too much and too incongruous with the first part, so instead of the two elements (the romance and the suspense) mixing and blending seamlessly, the suspense overbalanced the entire story, ruining it for me.

Katie Ruggle has a great grasp on character and plot. Her doesn't fall into formula and her flawed protagonists are relatable.

Super sweet romance with tons of action! Fighting for her freedom, Alice (Sarah) ia the newest "old friend" who's come to visit
Otto Gunnerson takes one look at the new girl and he is stuck mute. The feeling is mutual.
As they get to know each other they become closer. She is scared though and is planning on leaving Monroe soon. She has to, but doesn't want to. Can Otto convince her to stay? Will her brother find her?
Great book! Fantastic series and author!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Survive the Night was another home run for Katie Ruggle. Lovable but misunderstood Otto meets his perfect match in the newest resident, "Sarah". On the run, in fear for her life, Sarah Clifton, escapes to the mountain town of Monroe with the help of a mystery man. Sarah is just settling into her new life when it all goes wrong. Helicopters, explosions, gun battles and more are what you can look forward to with this book!
Settle in for action, adventure and a little romance!

Disappointing. I really enjoyed the Rocky Mountain Rescue series but am struggling with the K~9 series. Each one is a little harder to get through,, The plot in Survive the Night had lots of promise but the insipid lead characters had me skimming to see how it played out in the end. I’m hoping for better next time out.

Suspense topped with a heaping helping of suspense. You’ll be holding your breath by the end.

If you haven't read book one and two of this series, I suggest you catch up on those before reading Survive the Night. Jules and Graces story continues in this book.
I was surprised by how quite and almost shy acting Otto was around Sarah in the beginning. Too cute. And his love for all animals is awe inspiring. I really enjoyed this book.

I completely loved Otto! This was the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Otto was the best book boyfriend ever! I loved that he was so awkward but so sweet and loving as well. He was the perfect package. I loved Sarah as well. Her character was sweet and funny and almost just as awkward as Otto. The action was fast and kept the story going. Things happened a little too conveniently to be believable at times but that goes hand in hand with telling a story sometimes and did not distract from how much I loved the book.
Overall, I think this is a great book for anyone who loves action and great love stories.

Holy mackerel! What a ride!
I absolutely love this series so was so excited to read Otto's story and it did not disappoint. Watching Otto and Sarah find their way together was just wonderful and charming. And the action nearly made me miss my stop! Explosions, evil henchmen and plans, heroes completely cut off from the outside world, and wonderful and brave animals - such a great read!
I am seeing a re-read of books #1 and #2 in my very near future - especially with that epilogue!! When is book #4 coming?

Full review to be published online in early February, 2018.
SURVIVE THE NIGHT is the third book in Katie Ruggle’s “Rocky Mountain K9 Unit” series. Although not quite the quality of her first series “Search and Rescue”, these have nonetheless been enjoyable reads. Sarah has been hiding out from her criminal brother, as well as an abusive fiancé. She’s come to Monroe to seek shelter with Jules and her siblings. She is quickly drawn to cop Otto, and things go along nicely until her troubles catch up with her.
SURVIVE THE NIGHT is a lot of fun, but I’m not sure how well it holds up as a standalone. There are a lot of characters from previous books weaving in and out of the storyline. Ruggle has a habit of continuation stories; and I’m not sure how well that works for the casual reader who might miss a book or two in the series. If you are a regular reader, all is well; and you will enjoy visiting with the leads from previous books.

I first discovered Katie Ruggle's Search & Rescue books, devoured them, and recommended them to every romantic suspense fan. This new series, and especially Survive the Night, isn't quite on the same par. In Survive the Night, the pace is so fast it detracts from character development and creates an instalove situation without enough arc to fully believe it. While it was nice to see characters from previous books, the characterization is too dramatic, often making the characters seem spazzy. The ending also tended toward over the top. Even so, I will be sticking with the series and Katie Ruggle.

Really great read, love this world that Kate has created. Looking forward to the next book.

My love for big, quiet heroes is still going strong. When they're kinda socially awkward and put their foot in their mouth and/or get so tongue tied they can't speak at all in front of the lady who catches their fancy...I AM SO IN. In other words, Otto is one of those characters I adore.
His special lady friend, Sarah, also scores high on the socially awkward scale. That mostly stems from her sheltered existence, though. Or maybe I should say, her imprisonment by her family. Because, let's face it, when someone is locked in their room and physically punished, that goes beyond being sheltered.
However, like Jules and Grace, Sarah got out (with help, of course) and found a place for herself in Monroe. Jules, Grace, and the guys welcome her with open arms and try to give her a sense of security despite not knowing everything she's dealing with. Otto jumps in with both feet and does his part in keeping her safe. He's such a big softie. Seriously. I like those big quiet ones, especially when they adopt strays no one else wants.
That said, I did think this book had a lot of things happen that were too coincidental. While I understand why some of it came to pass, it just felt too easy at times. However, this is all pushing us toward a final resolution for Jules and her siblings and I've been wondering how things would be resolved on that end since book 1. So I'm in. I'm in 'til the end.
