There is something a bit jarring about seeing a classic story like this in a Manga format, but it's also a wonderful way to connect this story to reluctant readers, or just people who want to read it the story with a fun new visual element to it. I can't be mad at something that gets kids reading.
Thank you to the publisher Udon Entertainment and Netgalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I hadn’t read Edgar Allan Poe’s stories before, aside from a poem called “Annabel Lee”, which I find so lugubrious, dark, but beautiful. I discovered it because of a trilogy, ‘The Dark Artifices’ by Cassandra Clare, and it has a meaning in the plot. I highly recommend you to read the poem if you haven’t done it yet. And it surprised me the darkness inside his stories. I think they are for people who can read these types of books and stories.
I am not saying it is not worth a read. Of course, it is worth a read. If you love Edgar Allan Poe and his stories, and if you love manga and dark stories, full of mystery with a little bit (a lot) of horror, this is your book.
There are three stories illustrated in this book: The Tell Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of the House of Usher.
The stories are beautifully illustrated, and it is so easy to read!
This manga of short-stories is perfect, as I’ve said before, for Edgar Allan Poe’s fans and people who love to read about horror, mystery, thriller, and dark themes.

I'm a big EAP fan as well as a graphic novel fan. I knew I would want to check this out since I am not very experienced with manga.
This collection chose some of the most famous and discussed Edgar Allan Poe stories. I found the artwork to complement the stories perfectly.
The art style was so captivating but I, unfortunately, found that Edgar Allan Poe's work as short stories just fell flat for me and I felt like they weren't flushed out to the capacity that they could be.
Below are my ratings for the individual stories:
The Tell-Tale Heart: 5 Stars
The Cask of Amontillado: 1 Star
The Raven: 2 Stars
The Masque of the Red Death: 3
The Fall of the House of Usher :1 Star
Overall I am rating this one at 2.5 Stars
Received a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley.
Another author I really enjoy that’s work has been turned into a manga. These classics being converted to manga really give reluctant readers a chance to experience the classics in a form that is easy to read and enjoy.
Okay, I loved this one! The graphics especially are SUPER awesome, and I'm in awe! Every story has its own graphic style, and it's just brilliant. I'm all for colored graphics but this is one of the few ones that's just amazing with black and white. I loved it. As for the stories, they are told brilliantly too, accompanied so well with the graphics, and dare I say these graphics added so much to these classic stories. Absolutely do not miss out on this one if you are a fan of Poe! Very much recommended.
Thanks so much to Netgalley, and publishers for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
I love Edgar Allan Poe, and while I've read graphic novels and other interpretations of his writing, I had never before read a graphic novel! Adjusting to this different style of reading was a bit confusing at first but became easier to navigate after a few pages. I'd highly recommend this to any Poe lovers or manga fans!!
Wonderful adaptation for new age readers. Included some of my favorite Poe stories. I found this very enjoyable to read.
I've never read edgar allen poe before this and I probably won't now. His stories were kind of hard for me to understand but I did love the first story. The format is great and the artwork is stunning. I love these manga classics but edgar allen poe just isn't for me.
3.5 stars

Actually, manga classic really helpful people and kids to dive into classic literature without pressure. With a beautiful artwork, the plot mostly adapted well from the real literature.
People said it is easier describe something with pictures than words. And I think it is true. I really enjoy this manga and looking forward to see another titles.
You can’t go wrong with Edgar Allen Poe. The artwork in this book only adds to the haunting nature of these classic stories and it’s awesome! I’ve only gotten into horror manga recently, but the wait only made these books soooo much better.
It’s 5 stars from me for content/artwork. I’ll be looking to purchase this for my home library.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really love most of the art and the conversion from written form to illustration. But I hated when stories kept description text instead of just showing. Like description of the room instead of drawing directly the room with the details.
This is an interesting take on stories I’ve read many times. Not too gruesome but not overly tamed down either. I enjoyed the artwork.
You can never go wrong with Edgar Allan Poe! It is a freat way to get kids to read more classical works while making it interesting for them. Would definitely add this to my classroom bookshelf!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity.
I really enjoyed this adaptation of Poe's work, it gives his writing a new edge and the art makes it more atmospheric, creepy, and eerie. For someone who is not completely used to Poe's stories, this was a fun and good introduction to his works.
I love Edgar Allan Poe so I was beyond stoked when I saw this edition of his works!
The art was phenomenal, the story telling was brilliant and overall I love how engaging and unique these editions are.
If you're looking to get into classics then these manga editions are definitely a great starting point.
My favourites from this collection were, of course, the Raven, as well as The Tell Tale Heart!
YES! I am always a fan of manga/graphic novel adaptations of classic literature as a way to engage students. The illustrations were beautiful and it was the right amount of eerie! Cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was the first Manga Classics I’ve read, and I enjoying reading Edgar Allan Poe and have also taught several of his stories.
I thought this was well done. I liked that it kept the wording. I think that the images would help people to understand his fantastic stories. I was afraid the images might be cheesy horror, but they weren’t. I’d definitely recommend it to horror manga fans and those looks to make Poe a little more readable or even just fans of classics who are open to adaptations. I’m definitely interested in checking out other Manga Classics now.
