I think this was a really good adaptation of some of Poe's work. I personally liked how The Raven was adapted best. I wish they would have put in more of Poe's incredible poems and maybe left out some of the longer stories. Or maybe have 2 volumes, one on poems, and one on stories. It was interesting to me that each story had a different artist. Although the art was different for each story, it felt cohesive across the whole book.

I really enjoyed this book. It has been a while since I have read the stories of Edgar Allan PoeSome of the stories in this book were new to me, and some were ones I have read before. I really enjoyed the art style and I felt that the manga stays very true to the stories.
It did a great job of capturing the creepy feel of his stories, and I would highly recommend it.

This book contains five stories of Edgar Allan Poe (all regarded as masterpieces) in manga comic form. These stories are as follows:
1. The Tell Tale Heart: The haunting guilt of a murderer drives him mad.
2. The Cask of Amontillado: A horrifying tale of revenge.
3. The Raven (actually a poem): The mysterious visit of a raven to a distraught lover.
4. The Masque of the Red Death: The horrors of the plague and the attempt by the prince and his friends to escape from it.
5. The Fall of the House of Usher: What dark secrets did the ancient house hold?
I read all these stories in text form long back and enjoyed them. Now reading them in graphic form greatly enhanced my enjoyment. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. The art work is excellent and brings out the horror and terror elements very effectively. All the essential elements of the text are included. The book is highly recommended.
My only complaint is that the artwork is in black and white and not colour. A colour rendition would have enhanced the reading experience. For this reason, I rate the book as 4 stars, otherwise I would have rated it as 5 stars.

Edgar Allan Poe is such a drama queen. It’s part of the genre, I suppose, which is why I can’t take it seriously; I just find it silly and funny. I’d hoped the visual aspect of the adaptation would help set the right atmosphere, but the text was too faithful to the original.
The artwork is amazing and it brought the stories to life beautifully. It made me like the stories I’d already read more and it enhanced my experience of the ones I hadn’t read yet.
This manga adaptation is a great way to introduce someone to Poe’s work without drowning in how overdramatic it is, or for those that can’t stand that.
More tension, less melodrama.

Theres a problem with the file and I can't open it, which is a pity as I was looking forward to this read. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

It's been many years since I read these stories by Edgar Allan Poe, and I have to say that I enjoyed reading this manga adaptation. The illustrations help creating an even more sinister atmosphere, and the stories' adaption are quite faithful to the originals.
In my humble opinion, I think this is a good way to invite readers to get close to Poe's tales. Therefore, they can get curious enough to try the originals.

I love Edgar Allan Poe and was delighted by this re-imagining!

I enjoyed this manga version of the classic book. It was a fun way for a new generation to learn about the classics.

Another great classic delivered in such an entertaining way, completely recommend it. Poe's stories are incredible already in their original form but in this way the day are utterly good. I will never get tired of reading them.

This was absolutely wonderful to read. I love Edgar Allen Poe so of course I loved this. This contains so many of my favorite poems by Poe. The Poems in this collection are:
•The Tell-Tale Heart
•The Cask of Amontillado
•The Raven
•The Masque of the Red Death
•The Fall of the House of Usher
I was really hoping that Annabel Lee would be in there, but it wasn't. This was still really good though and I really want a physical copy!

Loved this! I really wanted to get into manga and graphic novels this year, and it was perfect to start with stories I already know and love. The artwork was amazing and I could follow along easily. Hoping to be able to find a physical copy to buy because I just loved it so much!

While I’m deeply convinced that Poe had some psychological issues, I am a fan of his creepy writing. The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven are two of my favourite stories of his.
The Telltale Heart was well done in this manga format and the black and white illustration helped the creepy atmosphere of the story. However, with the rest of the stories I found the atmosphere lacking and I considered skimming through due to boredom. Alas the type A part of my personality forces me to read every word of a book. (Just call me Monica Geller 😂)
I feel that the Manga version of Poe’s stories would have been better served if the language was somewhat updated to fit the format of Manga.
My favourite story was The Red Death, but it would have been so much more effective if it was illustrated in colour, especially considering the description of the seven rooms. I loved the page at the end of each story with facts about that particular story and Poe.

This was surprisingly true to the source material. It was also interesting to experience an artist's interpretation of Poe's work. In this case, the art was quite spartan, rather than going into the detail that artist's renderings of gothic stories so often are. While I don't think this should ever serve as a substitute for the original, it's definitely an excellent way for readers to get to know Poe's work, especially since the art manages to convey the themes of fear, darkness, and madness in quite a compelling way.
Definitely worth picking up for fans of manga, younger readers, or readers who work better with visual cues rather than just words on the page.

I love Poe but maybe not in comic form. Or just not in manga form. This was my first manga and I have to say, I'm not really a fan. Back to front and right to left reading is backwards for me and it's an adjustment. I have two other Manga Classics so I'll get through those and see if it's something I want to continue to read.

I quite enjoy Manga Classics -- they're an easy way to become familiar with beloved classics, without the headache that usually comes with reading said classics. The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe was interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to read more classically!

Manga Classic: The Stories of Edgar Allen Poe
by Edgar Allen Poe
I love the stories of Edgar Allen Poe, I did not like this art style, unfortunately! It was not for me.
2 Stars / C-

My love for Poe knows no bounds. And this was the manga I didn’t know I wanted.
I seem to only be drawn to manga that portrays stories that I already know. And, I’m totally okay with that.
If you’re an Edgar Allan Poe fan, I suggest you read this one. It’s got quite a few of his best stories.
And if you haven’t read Poe before; well, I suggest you start here because the illustrations really add to his awesomely macabre stories!

I love these manga adaptions! I love how faithful they are to the original stories and how classic the art style is. They're brilliant reads for grasping the story if one doesn't want to or doesn't have time to go through the originals. The Manga Classics are always a great read and this collection is no exception

Having read Poe’s works many years ago and new to Manga Classics, I was interested to see how the stories of Edgar Allan Poe could be interpreted. I was pleasantly surprised how well two formats worked and have been combined lovingly with the 5 stories of Poe presented with the respect they deserve by the different artists tasked with interpreting them.
I think it will be appreciated more by those who are fans of manga and graphic novels, hopefully introducing Poe to them for the first time and creating new fans of such an influential writer.
As for fans of Edgar Allan Poe like me, it just encouraged me to go back and read the stories again after such a long time.
Basically, a win for all readers.

"Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe" is a manga adaptation of five of Edgar Allan Poe's stories (and poem): "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Raven", "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" (you have to wonder why those and not others maybe better suited for a manga adaptation). And the result, even if far of a tragedy, is a middling effort that leaves the reader with a strange aftertaste, because you will feel the ingredients for a great work were here, but the mixing and the cooking were a disgrace.
Let's start with the stories: they are short and to the point, with darkness, a Gothic and beautiful atmosphere and dark instincts. No criticisms here. But the adaptation does little to enhance Poe's words; quite the opposite, with so many bubbles of description and narration and no interaction between them and the drawings, it detaches the reader from the work they have in front of their eyes. Stories that should bring a shudder and make the heart beat fast, end up being boring, cold, and repetitive.
It doesn't help that the drawing style, even if beautiful, seems too cute for these kind of stories. All the characters are too clean, too handsome, too infantile, for the stories, and make the stark contrast between text and art more accentuated.
Not a horrible manga. But it could have been so much more (for starters, alive).
