I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.
When I first heard about this book, I was immediately intrigued. Everything about the synopsis screamed it was a book for me, and I had quite the feeling that it would be very much like the movie, She's the Man, which is perfect. In Just One of the Boys, Alice has always wanted to be a hockey player. But, because she's a girl, she can't play with the boys. (sidenote: this really resonated with me, as I was told when I was 12 or 13 I couldn't play on the football team I was a part of any more, because I was a girl, and we had no girls teams in our area!). However, her cunning plan is to disguise herself as her twin brother, and don the persona of 'Al'. We get two PoVs in this book, and the second is from Hayden, who is the star player on the Falcons. He always gets compared to his older brother, and wants to do anything to get out from under his shadow. When the new rookie player, 'Al', rocks up, he takes him under his wing, and finds himself drawn to him, and 'Al's twin sister Alice when they meet too.
The chemistry between Alice and Hayden was unreal. Whenever they were together, the sparks literally flew, and I loved how open they could be with each other. Yes, there were obviously some tension and angst when Alice/Al was revealed, but other than that, there wasn't actually much drama in this book, which was nice. Hayden's PoV was wonderful too, and I loved his backstory about being treated differently because of his brother, and how he was finally getting his hockey mojo back throughout this book.
Another thing I really liked in this book was the friendship, especially between Alice and Madison, and Hayden, Daniel and Tyler - the others who I believe will have their own companion books! The friendships shown were all legit and real, and it made the book seem even more realistic, and improved the book! I loved this book, and the definitely comparison to She's the Man was apparent. If you love that movie, this is definitely a book for you!
very cute!
It was a lot like She's the Man, except for the hockey version and some of the time things didn't quite add up. But frankly, I didn't care much about either of those things.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite it being a wee bit cliche a wee bit been there and done that and a wee bit, let's face it this isn't really possible.
There is some fun banter, some amazing ice hockey and quite a bit of swoony. So this works for me not matter what
I'll read anything with hockey or ice skating so when you combine them it makes for a really cute story and add that this is YA and you have a winner. Was this a five-star read? No, but it was a four because the characters were really likable and lovable. The storyline was strong and kept me entertained which is hard to do. This wasn't a reread but it was great to read at the beach.
This book was cute, it copied all the teen movies you've seen where the girl pretends to be a guy to be able to play a sport.
Alice has wanted to play hockey her whole life. Alice and her twin brother, Alexander, both try out for the Chicago Falcons, and she gets picked for the team. But once she takes off her helmet, the coach realizes that he picked a girl and he immediately gives her spot to her brother. After Alexander gets injured, she steps in and plays for him until he's better. Her only obstacle is a fellow teammate, Hayden.
Hayden has an older brother who is famous in the hockey world and he's always on his back to do better like him. Other than than chip in his shoulder and trying to control his temper, he can't stay focused on hockey. But meeting the new rookie, Al, rubs him the wrong way.
What starts off as enemies turns into a bromance , filled with deception. Alice gets to see the real Hayden and she ends up falling in love with him. But how will he handle her lie?
So I had some major Twelfth Night, and even more so She's The Man vibes coming from this book at first haha. And I kinda loved that honestly. (Yes I know the 2nd is a retelling of the first)
It was such a fun book and lighthearted book. But really shown the passion that the two characters had as well.
And I really admired Alice through the book. She didn't let something like the fact that "girls don't play hockey" keep her from following her dreams. And I think something like that is so important for readers these days. Not just the female ones either. But to anyone that if you really want something you need to go out and take it.
Plus I just have to say that the chemistry between her and Hayden was just so cute.
I really adored them both. And loved watching how they pushed each other. Even when he didn't know quite who she was haha.
That showing that a little competition can be healthy and push you to give your ll and really strive to succeed or possibly make bigger decisions later on down the line.
I was so impressed with this book and was glad something as simple as hockey drew me in, but the story was sable to hold me for so many other reasons.
A five star read for sure!!
I had problems with this book. So Alice is a beautiful girl who also looks exactly the same as her hockey playing twin brother and literally no one, including her boyfriend of two years, can tell the difference. I just didn't really buy it. She cuts her hair and wears extensions to hide this when she's in girl form. And her mother was completely fooled by this. It never presented as an issue at school. And apparently no one ever bumps into her brother who doesn't even use her fake name. How is their plan ever going to work in the end? I guess we never expect it to. But that brings me to Hayden. The arc of their relationship just felt strange. And then let's throw in some additional secrets, which I won't mention as it’s meant to be a big reveal (though due to stereotypes was completely obvious) and was also dealt with in a way I consider insensitive at best. I suppose it's a bit of fun but there are so many ridiculous situations I just didn't enjoy it.
I received this book right when I moved to a new town, moved three different times in a month before getting an apartment and then I also got a new car after I got in a car accident. October was a bit crazy... so sorry for not reviewing this! :( I read it though!
I know I loved this book because I thought it was unique with a girl wanting to play hockey. I loved the romance between the two characters too even though they were just best friends pretty much for a long time. One of my favorite scenes was when they were at the guy's family resort or something and they spent time talking outside and I think that was when she really started liking him.
I absolutely loved this! I loved the dynamic between Hayden and "Al" especially. Alice was a fun character, the games were exciting, and it was an awesomely fast-paced and exciting read :)
I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get into this book. The blurb was intriguing and the cover is cute, but I tried to push myself to read at least five chapters and I that's as far as I could go.
Alice Bell disguises herself as her twin brother Al in order to play on the elite junior Chicago Falcons hockey team. Even though she has amazing skating skills, the coach wouldn’t draft a girl. Hayden Trembly, the team’s star is living in his brother’s shadow and is constantly in the penalty box. Through his friendship with “Al,” he begins to reconnect with the game. Of course, when he finds out Al’s true identity, trouble ensues.
It was a cute read for the weekend. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books with a team or sport element.
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, there were moments when I was thinking "How does Alice get away with no one finding out she is a girl?" but I pushed that aside and just enjoyed the story. Alice or "Al" just wants to play hockey and be part of the Falcon team. Little did she realize all the other things that could happen when she is living a double life and hanging with the boys. The authors have us follow sweet, innocent Alice while she and her twin brother come up with a fantastic plan for Xander to keep his spot on the team after breaking his leg and for Alice to be on the ice. Living a double life I really felt for Alice when she started to fall for the bad boy on the team but couldn't take it further than being just "friends" because Hayden only knows her as a boy.
The character development was well done. I enjoyed learning about all the characters and found I grew to love them when I didn't at the beginning, Hayden wasn't a nice guy but once you start to get to know him and understand him, he grows on you. I also really enjoyed the alternate points of view. There are a lot of characters but the authors did a great job of keeping the story easy to follow.
I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to reading more from this duo team of authors!
This was cute. Yes, it had "She's the Man" vibes, but I loved She's the Man too, so that is totally fine with me. It was a quick read for me, tons of fluff, and the romance went from hate to adorable, and it worked for me. There actually was talk of hockey in this hockey book, shocker, I know, and that was great as well.
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! The romance was sweet, the plot was enjoyable – and there are hot hockey players! What else could you ask for? Just One of the Boys is a super sweet, romantic and light read, and it fit me perfectly! I finished it in one sitting, and then I regretted it, because I didn’t want it to be over.
I love Alice!
Alice is a super-fun character to read about. She loves hockey, and she’s good at it, too. Good enough to play with the boys. I loved reading about Alice, because she wasn’t like many other main characters you read about. She was fun, caring and stubborn – and I loved how she broke the norms!
Can we please talk about the hotness that is Hayden?
Let’s start with the fact that he’s a hockey player – I have a weakness for those, and Hayden doesn’t disappoint! I loved to see how he slowly started opening up to Alice, how he started to heal after losing his parents in a car accident. It broke my heart to see how sad he was, but it also healed it when I saw how he started living life again.
The romance is so sweet.
It’s not the most intense romance, but that was fine. I liked how Alice and Hayden became friends – best friends – before they became boyfriend and girlfriend. It felt really natural, the way the romance built, even though Hayden thought she was a boy through most of the book. It was really sweet and lovely, and they are so cute together!
The plot was great!
The plot was really interesting and unique. Since Alice is pretending to be a boy, it lands her in a lot of interesting – and funny – situations that you just can’t get enough of, and it was never boring to see how she tried to balance being both a girl and a boy. Plus, there’s tons of hockey, and I love hockey, so this book was really just perfect for me!
I really enjoyed every moment of reading this book, and couldn’t put it down! It had me going through all the emotions; crying, laughing, swooning, and – I can admit – wishing for a hockey player of my own. If you like a light, fun and romantic read, this book is definitely for you – it’s exactly what YA Romance should be!
Thank you Entangled for this ARC and Leah and Kate Rooper for your story.
This was a cute premise and was fun to read. I really liked the friendship between Alice and Hayden. However, I didn't like the characters themselves. They were both a little offputting. I really wanted to give this story a high rating, because I see the potential for more. To add to that, there were several plot holes.
I'm giving it three stars, because I did finish it and I might read the next one, but I didn't love it.
Alice and her twin brother try out for a hockey team, Alice makes it until the coach finds out she's a girl, then he gives the spot to her brother, Alexander. Alexander ends up breaking his leg and Alice pretends to be her brother in order to be on the team. Of course she meets and falls for the big star of the team, Hayden.
I loved this book, couldn't put it down. The hockey talk and play, the hidden identity, the secrets...I just wanted the story to keep going.
❝ It feels like there are a million things competing in my brain right now, but none of them have a chance. My visual sensory system is overloaded right now, with this guy standing in front of me. He stares down at me, and his eyes are so brown, they’re nearly black. Like his eyes are black holes, and I’m just a pathetic little asteroid, in the path of being crushed by his gravity.❞
I had such a fun time reading this book. It was just really light, funny, and cute. This is the perfect book to read when you’re looking for a cute contemporary YA romance.
Everything pretty much starts when Alice’s twin brother, Xander, gets injured shortly after making the Chicago Falcons hockey team. It’s then that they come up with the plan to have Alice disguise herself and take Xander’s place until he can play again. Of course, things don’t exactly go as planned. Soon, enough Alice’s double life reveals secrets that Xander has been keeping from her and it changes things between them.
Even though I didn’t like what Xander did to protect his secret, I did understand his uncertainty in sharing it. That being said, I was initially very annoyed with him for choosing to protect his own secret and not Alice. I was happy with his character development in that he could admit to himself that hockey was not his true passion.
Alice made for an interesting main character, and she was definitely my favorite. I liked how she was so passionate about hockey and willing to push herself to be better. She didn’t settle for anything other than her best. Yet, she was really neglecting the other parts of her life. It made it so that she was oblivious to her mother and brother’s feelings. Not to mention she always put romance on the very bottom of her list. Her whole life was so invested in hockey that when she was initially turned for the Falcons she didn’t seem to know who she was without it.
❝ I look in the mirror and see Al. I thought I’d feel a little better. A little more certain.
But now, I’m even more lost. I don’t even know who Al is. But the scary part is… in becoming Al, I think I’ve lost Alice too.
I don’t know who I used to be.
And I most certainly don’t know who I am.❞
The other problem that came up because of her duplicity is that it caused a strain between her and Xander. He knew that she was the better player and that when he was better there was no way he’d be able to play at the same level she did. People would notice, and he would probably get kicked off the team because he wasn’t good enough. He was always comparing himself to Alice in hockey and seemed stressed out by the fact he couldn’t improve like he wanted to.
As for Hayden, he was determined to make captain but at the same time, he didn’t really want it. He was always getting himself in trouble and being really self-destructive. He was also really cocky and didn’t work together with his team. It wasn’t until Alice pushed him and they started working together that he started to really focus and put in an effort.
I loved Alice and Hayden’s partnership on the team because they had one another’s backs and it was when we got to see a more positive side to Hayden where he was really loyal and protective. This was when the book really started getting fun for me because I enjoyed watching them help one another. They became best friends and that was something they both needed.
And then there was the romance aspect that wasn’t in your face, but just developed slowly over time. Neither of them really knew how they felt right away. Especially for Alice, she was kind of in denial about it because she wanted to focus on the games. I just really enjoyed the romance because it was so smooth, organic and just adorable. I really loved this book and I’m happy I got to read it ❤
Just One of the Boys was just released on October 2nd, and I highly recommend you go pick up a copy, especially if you like contemporary YA romance!
I received an advance eARC copy from Entangled Teen through Netgalley for an honest review. And this will not affect my thoughts or opinion about the book in any way.
Just One of the Boys is just like the movie She's the Man but in a book format. The both have similar premises but Just One of the Boys is way more better.
The story is about Alice Bell who pretended to be her twin brother Xander and later on fell in love with the star of the Falcon Hayden Tremblay.
Alice or Al is such a cute character that you would definitely love and look for in reading contemporary novels. Alice being a twin sister is lovely. She even pretended to be her twin brother just for him not to be eliminated being a Falcon.
Hayden at the beginning of the story is a mean person and a jerk. But later on, he change when he met Al Bell that he even open up with him.
The story will hooked you up and let you love to play hockey. I enjoyed how the story is being told with two perspective, Alice and Haydens. The characters are well develop in the story. It talks about how brothers and sister will do anything for each other.
I thought in the beginning that it will be just like the movie She's the Man but no. Cause the book teach me how beautiful friendship is and how you would do anything for your family. The story is a fast paced story that shows cuteness, humor, angst, love and pain.
I highly recommend it for readers who loves easy reads and romance overload.
My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very cute story that I really enjoyed! It's about a girl named Alice who just wants to play hockey she lives and breathes it but when her twin brother Alexander makes the team and she doesn't she sets out to prove she can be one of the boys. It's a she's the man type tail only with hockey instead of soccer and I loved every minute of it. Al and Tramblay make an amazing team and I enjoyed going on the journey with the characters.
