This book is 100% my guilty pleasure. I enjoyed every single thing about it, but I especially enjoyed the feminist inklings inside of it. Alice is one tough cookie and as someone who used to figure skate.. her abilities to both be graceful in figure skating and tough and agile on the hockey floor filled me with a huge load of feminist pride.

When I saw this book for the first time I knew I had to read it, because long ago I loved the movie Just One of The Guys and this book is very similar to that in the best of ways.

The romance in this book is also delightful in the best of ways. Alice and Hayden are each other’s balance and even though Hayden gets deceived into thinking Alice is Al, someone who is an amazing hockey player who becomes close friends with him as the story progresses, I ate up every moment they were together. I think most of all that friendship between Hayden and Al was the best part. Alice gets the chance to see Hayden’s many layers and gets to realize how much she enjoys every one of them.

Just One of The Boys is an adorkable novel that sings with a different kind of romance. It spreads the message that a girl can be whoever they wish to be and that love will follow when it is meant to.

I am a sucker for sports romances. Add a little of that old Shakespeare favorite sister pretending to be her brother. You’ve got me.

And, Just One of the Boys did. I’m still not a huge hockey fan (not even a little hockey fan), but I’ll slowly work my way there if I keep reading these fun hockey books.

Pretty much everything about Just One of the Boys worked for me. The writing was good, the characters were realistic, the pacing was good, and I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the after-chapters to see what the eventual fall-out is. I had guessed Xander’s secret early on so that “secret” wasn’t much of a one to me, although Alice admits to being one of the most oblivious people in the world so it probably wasn’t meant to be a huge secret.

Hopefully it was Alice’s obliviousness that came into play regarding her relationship with Freddy, the cheating boyfriend, because he is a real creep with no redeeming qualities.

I finished it in a couple of hours. It’s happy escapist fun.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3/5 This book was alright. I honestly don't have much to say. The entire time reading the book felt familiar to be and that's because it was. It has always t of the same elements from the movie she's the man. It was a quick easy read but unfortunately I just didn't really enjoy it.

Thank you Netgalley and Entangled Teen for sending me this arc in return for an honest and fair review.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Shes the Man and this novel was just filled with Shes the Man vibes!
Shes the Man meets Mulan meets Ice Hockey and Ice Skating - its the best way for me to describe it.

I absolutely loved it, the development of every character was amazing particularly the identity crisis that Alice went through and how she helped the other characters particularly her brother, Alexander and Hayden Tremblay - the hot hockey player.
I loved the way we got to see both the sensitive side and the rough and tumble side, which made me just fall in love with the character even more. Definitely going to be one of my book boyfriends!

I writing was one of my favourites, the descriptiveness of the language was amazing and had my emotions welling in certain scenes. It gives me such a wintery feeling I love it!

I would definitely say this is one of my hot chocolate required reads!

I would highly recommend this to fellow Shes the Man lovers and anyone who loves a determined character and romance.

It's no secret (in my family, anyway) that I love the movie, She's the Man, which is sort of based on Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare's Plays. When I read the blurb for JUST ONE OF THE BOYS, which is kinda like the plot of She's the Man, naturally I just have to read it, and I'm happy to inform that it surpassed my expectations and more.

I love retellings, but there's nothing I hate more than retellings that faithfully follow the original such that I can predict/know exactly what's going to happen next. I mean, flesh it out, deviate a little, stamp your own mark!

With JUST ONE OF THE BOYS, when I first started reading, especially when Alice masquerades as her brother, I have to admit I was imagining Viola (Amanda Bynes) saying those lines, doing those actions, etc especially that first scene in the locker room. But soon after, miracle of miracles, Viola "turned" into Al/Alice, the story was taking me places I'd never gone before, and making me excited to know what's going to happen to Al/Alice and Hayden. I love how the authors made this story their own; their characters were fleshed-out, three-dimensional individuals with their own goals and motivations. I love how Al and Hayden became very good friends, and the time apart as Hayden dealt with the fact that Al is really Alice was believable. I couldn't stop reading, couldn't stop until I reached the last page with a satisfied sigh.

If you love hockey and romantic comedies and best friends becoming more, you definitely shouldn't miss this!

A cute and fun read. Would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Disney channel movies. Alice and Hayden's friendship is so sweet and hearing each one's point of view really adds to the story.

Not a bad book, very Twelfth Nightish... wish there had been more redeeming supporting characters. I really hated Zander. He was so busy telling Alice that she was selfish that he couldn't see he was the selfish one. He ruined the story for me.

This was a fun, light read that I think female YA fans will love. The story was a good reinvention of a timeless premise for a new generation. Well done, with likable characters

Alice and Alexander are twins who always get mistaken for the other; they are starting a new school which has one of NHL’s favourite hockey teams “The Falcons” as try outs begin they both sign up but only Alice gets through, that is until coach notices she is a girl! Alexander then gets the place but ends up breaking his leg before the season begins. Alice has an amazing plan of playing as her brother throughout all the games until Hayden, the captain, catches her eye and secrets get involved, loyalty is tested and new relationships form. Alice / Al put herself to the test with known who she really is and what she really wants.
Even though Alice played two characters throughout the book I didn’t get confused at all, you always know who she was and what she was doing. Having different point of views in books is amazing to me because you really get the whole feel of everyone’s feelings and thoughts, Leah and Kate Rooper did and amazing job at putting in Alice’s and Hayden’s perspectives and I enjoyed all the laughs and tears.
Characters of Alice and Al (Who are the same person) was amazing, you never thought well that isn’t right one minute he thinks this and the next has a completely different opinion there still the same person it all just flowed as one character. Personally I would have liked to read more about Alexander near the end with the who “secrete” which I am not going to spoil for new readers! I just thought it would be amazing to have that involved as it was talked about through the book. Characters wasn’t the main thing in the novel you had around 3 main ones, Alice, Hayden and Alexander but since Hockey is a team sport it would have made sense to get others involved in the secretes and overall playing.
What can I say about the plot! It was amazing, through the book I was on the edge of my seat screaming at Alice to tell Hayden who she really was and it kept me turning page after page till I finished the whole book in one sitting! It really put sibling love into it, how much you are willing to throw away for your own brother/sister and even your love ones. Leah and Kate left the ending open to how Alice was going to play next year and Alexander’s secret coming out that I think if they wanted to could make another great book.
Overall I really enjoyed this, I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a proper teen novel romance that will really tug at your heart.

This was a very cute book about a girl who pretends to be her twin brother in order to play hockey and finds herself falling for her teammates. I liked Alice and Hayden and really enjoyed reading about Alice's skills and competitive nature. While other aspects of the plot were underdeveloped (especially everything dealing with Alice's twin. I really wanted more resolution there) I had a lot of fun reading this book.

"you've got nothing too worry about, baby brother," i say, nestling my head in his ear. "Because I'm not Alice. I'm Al."

This book is essentially the movie plot of She's The Man only with Ice skates and hockey sticks instead of Soccer balls.

Rating- 2.5/ 5 Stars.

Alright so let's jump to the plot quickly and then we'll delve into the everything else!

Alice has one passion- Ice Hockey.
She has one thought in her head- Ice Hockey.
She doesn't let anything else distract her nor deter he from her goal- Join the ice hockey team named the Falcons and get scouted for the NHL.
But one little problem...she's a girl and no matter how insanely good she is, the Falcons won't accept her, but they accept her twin brother- Xander.
When mishaps occur and her twin brother cannot play, she wants to save his position on the Falcons team. How you ask? She'll become one of the boys in his place until Xander can return!
Another little problem is a hot and cold Canadian named Hayden who sends her heart soaring."

Alright, so see what i meant by its essentially she's the man but with ice skates instead?

i enjoyed this book it was a sweet and relaxing read. However, it was so full of stereotypical characters that i didn't feel emotionally connected. So like, i liked it but i didn't feel the burning sting of pain when the characters discussed sad things about their families. I didn't feel like my heart would burst when the characters got romantic. I just...read it and smiled.

It followed the plot of She's the man sooo closely though- the mother who tears up because she wants her daughter to be a lady, Alice has to do charity balls but not debutant training, figure skating. You see?

So if you want a sweet, slice of life book with romance, this is your book! I really don't mean that in a bad way. This author writes well and it was cute.

Also, maybe I'm too innocent but for 16 year olds, man they drink a lot! how do they even get access to the stuff?! i'm 22 and i don't even do that! but anyway,

it's cute.

I'll stop there, stay awesome.

OMG THIS BOOK!!!!! I love reading books that make me laugh and make me smile! This book did both! Al is just such a wonderful character and I wish I could be more determined like her. Hayden is so dreamy I fell in love with him too. I'm so glad the two of them ended up together.

A major thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm bound to like a story that's like She's the Man. And so, I definitely loved this. Alice was a great character with a lot to offer, and I really, genuinely thought most of the characters were like this. Alice was a bit oblivious at times, but I guess that's what she was meant to be. And don't even get me started on Hayden. He was the epitome of a teen romance love interest - athletic, swoony and cute with a heart of gold.
And while I know that it's 'just a teen book', I really enjoyed the fighting spirit that Alice had when faced with sexism, and how she overcame a barrier to her doing what she loved (albeit with hiding her gender, but, yaknow)

Look, overall, I really enjoyed this novel. Great storyline? Tick. Kickass protagonist? Tick. Swoony love interest? Tick. I think we've got here, a great fun, and light novel.

I gave this book 4 stars. Many aspects of the story were so well done, I for the most part loved this book, there were a few things I wish we would have gotten into more, but considering this isn't exactly a long book, I can see why we didn't get into those. For what it was it was really good.

This book was a level of whimsical fun that put me in such a good mood that I didn't even mind that Canadian jokes. Speaking of Canada, it was good to see a book that was actually partially set in a part of Canada other than Ontario. Every time I find a book and I'm like, "Oh it's set in Canada! I should read this! I wonder what part of Canada it's in?" it's almost certainly takes place in Ontario. I like Ontario, but there are other parts of Canada. Just saying.

I'm gonna start off by saying how much I hated Alice's boyfriend Freddy. He was a no good cheater who threatened to out a character for being gay. He was also just a trash human being and I'm glad that Alice dropped him because she was better off without him.

Onto the character that was gay, I won't tell you who it is because that would be a spoiler, so instead I'll just talk around it. I loved how the character was portrayed, they weren't just the token gay character that I hate so much, they actually had a large amount of significance to the plot and in the main characters life. Even though their sexuality was a secret it wasn't that hard for me to figure out.

This book was no murder mystery, I had no problem whatsoever guessing the outcome and the secret that drove this story. It was nothing new, but still something I could sit down and binge. I read this book in one day, it was a really enjoyable read. I love these contemporaries.

Alice Bell has no time for sexism, if the coach won't let her on the team because she's a girl, she'll pretend to be someone else so that she can play. I admire that. It felt a lot like a cross between She's the Man and The Girl's Got Secrets by Linda Kage. Surprisingly this story didn't give me any second hand embarrassment. I suffer very badly from second hand embarrassment so the fact that I was okay with this one blew my mind a little bit.

I have nothing else to say other than I highly recommend reading this cute funny contemporary romance when it comes out in October! It will put you in a good mood.

'Just One of the Boys' is a perfect novel for ice skating freaks like me. Alice and Xander are twins who have been skating all their lives, but Alice seems to love skating more and she is also definitely better at it than her twin brother. When she doesn't get to the hockey team just because she is a girl she decides to pretend that she's Xander (who joined the team even tough he wasn't good enough). There's also Hayden, a moody captain of the team who at the beginning seems to be against Al (Alice pretending to be a boy), but warms up to him later. Al and Hayden have incredible chemistry on the ice, they form a dream team. But lies can't be kept forever...
I really enjoyed the book. I gave it 4 stars instead of five only because the idea of pretending to be other different hockey player made me think a lot about other YA book- 'Being Sloane Jacobs' by Lauren Morrill. It made the book a bit more predictable.

I absolutely adored this book! This is the story of Alice Bell, hockey player, twin and girlfriend to a hockey god. When Alice and her brother both try out for an elite team and Alice gets cut because she is a girl, she is crushed. Unfortunately her brother becomes injured and Alice has to become Al, taking on the male persona to play hockey in his place. Al is a rock star on the ice but she has found a quick enemy in Hayden, talented but facing some heartbreak and emotional turmoil from the past. As Hayden and Al get to know each other, lines become blurred for Al as she finds herself feeling more than friendship for her new bestie. Along with the relationship between Hayden and Alice, there is a lot going on between Alice and her twin. There were a lot of great layers to this story and I really enjoyed it. This book was more than just a romance as both Alice and Hayden are working through their circumstances and finding that it is OK to rely on others. There was something about this book that really grabbed me and I loved the alternating view points. Will definitely be recommending it to my students!

This book reminded me of the movie “She’s the Man” except with hockey and I really adored it! Alice loves playing hockey more than anything. She tries out for a team when she moves to Chicago and when she doesn’t make it she is extremely disappointed. She decides to play for her brother when he injures himself. She is immediately drawn to another hockey player on her team, Hayden. In the beginning, it is a little difficult to like Hayden. He’s kind of a jerk to everyone, including Alice. However, as you learn more about him, you get where he is coming from. It is really great to see how he opens up and becomes a kinder person around Al. Alice is a fun character who is not afraid to go after what she wants. I also enjoyed Alice’s transformation as well. It was fun to see how she made herself into a boy in order to play hockey. This book is told from Alice and Hayden’s point of view. I thought having the dual points of view were really helpful to see how both Alice and Hayden viewed their relationship especially since Hayden thought Alice was a boy for most of the book. Overall, this book was a sweet, easy read about figuring out who you are and going after your dreams.

This book was a fun read, and that was I thought it would be when I went into it. Unfortunately, I didn't much else out of it aside from that. It was like Mulan meets She's the Man, and there wasn't anything especially unique about it.
