I give this book 5 stars. The storyline between Ant Reseacher Felicia Hartigan and Wealthy Hudson Carlyle was well written and starts with them meeting at a fundraiser. He is taken by her but is confused because she is a nerdy women not the usually women he dates. She is in love with her brothers friend Tyler and Hudson calls her on it. She tries to say she does but he know she is not telling the truth. He tells her he will help her won Tyler's attention in exchange for painting her portrait. She declines but he shows up at her lab the next day. I whole heartedly recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This book was the first book I have read of Ms Flynn's. I think that it says that this book could be a stand alone, but having not read book one of this series I felt like I maybe was missing just a few key points of information (like the thing that came between Sawyer and Tyler). But over all this was an Ok story. I liked Felecia a lot. She maybe small but she was pretty mighty. She was pretty shy but had a fiesty side to her. She meets Hudson, he's a rich businessman who has a secret side to him that he hides from his family. The two of them when they finally get together were pretty hot. I think some of what I thought was kinda boring was the triangle of Felecia liking Tyler, who was just a friend of Hudson's brother Sawyer, who didn't like her, to Hudson liking her but not telling her. It was a lot to keep track of. Over all cute story with a hea.
I loved this book! Hudson... have mercy. Another book I did not put down. It's just that good. When the story starts to take the first few twists and turns, I couldn't help myself, just had to keep reading.
Hudson is the charming of the two brothers, and frankly he is just that. Looking at him and workaholic, driven Sawyer just give me Hudson. He wants no part of the family business, shows up at events only when beckoned by his mother Helene. Here we see him invited to the museum for an exhibition when a young woman wearing what he describes as a sack catches his eye, and his desire to paint her kicks in. Hudson has a secret life. He's a highly successful artist whose paintings are prized. He hides it from his family, after being chastised in college by his father who pressed him into business or else. After the fall out from book one, Sawyer and Tyler still aren't talking to each other because they're both jackhats and Helene sets about an idea that Hudson needs to fix this. Because Hudson is a fixer. During the evening he meets Felicia.
Felicia is his object d'art and desire. Felicia has a PhD in I'll be brief here, insects, namely a specific species of ant. Felicia is form across the river in Waterbury, comes from a loud, large Irish family and is no bigger than a minute. They called her pocket sized. When Tyler's family moved into the neighborhood she finally met someone she could talk to, but he was her older brothers best friend and Tyler got a scholarship to the prep school back across the river. The town that the Carlyle's basically built. Felicia has had a major crush on Tyler forever (although it totally eludes me why). Hudson doesn't get it either, but makes a deal with Felicia that she'll help him get the two guys back on speaking terms meanwhile he'll coach her on dating and in return she agrees to let him paint her.
Hudson jumps in with both feet to his newly assigned duty with her and I loved it. I loved them both.
Hudson was so slick without being slimy- he was -yes, charming. His nickname for her was Matches and Matches was a little slow out of the gate, but she caught up. Started getting confused about her feelings and had to remind herself that Tyler was the end goal. There were a couple of things Tyler did in this book that peeved me about his friendship with Matches and I didn't like it or him for doing it. Selfish, he is.
So Avery, fantastic storyteller that she is weaves us a story that really entwines Hudson and Matches, let me not forget her one eyed cat who is one step away from feral, but of course loves Hudson.
Meanwhile he takes her to his grandfathers cabin, which is his secret working place and she sees all these sketches of her. She then realizes who her favorite painter is as well and is sworn to secrecy.
Hudson has a big showing coming up at Everly's gallery.
When the bottom drops out of things, Felicia is wounded and holes up in her tiny apartment. Hudson is a train wreck and someone has to intervene. Yes it comes too. Small army because Hudson needs that. Yes, I'm obviously being sketchy, you're lucky you got this much... this is a must read book.
I love Avery's books but this tops my list. It's got everything wrapped up into a nice tidy package, ok not tidy, the one eyed cat thing... but it is perfect. I loved this book and for me tops book one.
Avery you have outdone yourself with this one. It's a must read and a keeper.

The Charmer (A Hot Romantic Comedy) (Harbor City) by Avery Flynn
This is Hudson Carlyle and Felicia Hartigan's story.
Wow! Another winner by Avery Flynn. The author delivered an entertaining, funny, and hot read!
Felicia is nerdy and brilliant. She loves planning and being organized. Hudson appears to be the rich pampered boy. There is more to Hudson than he lets everyone see. Hudson and Felicia are opposites but they are perfect for one another but will they take a chance on love? I really loved the characters. Hudson is such a "charmer". I enjoyed Hudson and Felicia's story. This was a fantastic book.
This is book number two in the Harbor City series. This book can be read as a standalone. But if you haven't read book number one, The Negotiator, you will want to. It was really great too. FYI, contains mature and graphic content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I loved this book! There is somthing about Felicia that Hudson can't put his finger on from the moment he sees her. He wants to paint her she on the other hand wants one thing a date with a guy she has loved her whole life. Hudson makes her his project and along the way they find out they may be more then just a fling.
This is another winner by Avery Flynn. This book is one you can't put down, but hate to see end. I loved Hudson. I want one for myself! He did have a jerk moment that made me want to throttle him, but he completely redeemed himself to me. Hudson and Felicia had a ton of chemistry. I just loved those two together. I liked Felicia's nerdy side. I thought her personality combined with hunky Hudson was so intriguing. There is more then meets the eye when it comes to Hudson. As a cat lover and cat mom I was a fan of Honeypot. Definitely has a personality of a cat. Over all the book delivered on everything I look for humor, heat, and heart. I can't say enough how much you should give this one a read you won't be disappointed.
The Charmer- what a perfect title! Hudson, our hero, was in fact quite charming. And witty, and gorgeous, and talented. I was as mystified as he was when he failed to charm Felicia, who was already enamored with someone else. I enjoyed Hudson's My Fair Lady plan and watching Hudson work his magic on Felicia- in more ways than one. And I always LOVE a nutty sidekick pet, and Honeypot certainly fit the bill. A great follow-up to The Negotiator, although it can definitely be read as a standalone.
This RomCom is a light-hearted, amusing read. The story is well-written and the flow is good, and I did get a few chuckles along the way. The problem, for me, is the heroine in this romance. Supposedly determined to land the elusive Tyler, Felicia's actions are quite contrary to that. I get that she is a bit obsessive about her lists and completing them, but falling into bed with Hudson, over and over, and getting right back on task with catching Tyler before the sheets have even cooled, is not what I would expect from an accomplished woman. I did enjoy Hudson's chase and failure to capture his love interest, as well as his run-in with her crazy feline, and the steam between this pair was fan yourself hot, but Felicia just left me with a sour feeling.
The author is talented and the writing style is quite good, so I will continue to read her books. This one just missed the mark for me.
Do you like Rom Com's? I do and there are not a lot of authors out there that get them right. Well Avery Flynn got this right! The Charmer is just the right amount of light hearted banter, heated angst, and wacky details that make this story a lot of fun! Our H is Hudson, younger and supposedly charming, fun loving brother of Sawyer from The Negotiator and our h is Felicia an entomologist with Harbor City's museum's ant lab. Hudson is drawn to Felicia like an ant to honey but he keeps trying to tell himself that it's for everyone else except his own desires. Felicia has always been a woman with a plan and her plan was to be dating Tyler Jacobson by the time she turned thirty. Tyler is a friend of both of their families and hopefully will be getting a story of his own in the future. Now it's a month away from Felicia's birthday and Hudson has come up with a plan to help Felicia achieve her goal that she thinks is ridiculous and he feels will work. This is where I stop my review because to give any more details will ruin the story for the reader. I highly recommend this sexy, sweet and funny book by Avery Flynn to any Rom Com lover.
I reviewed this book as an ARC through Netgalley in return for an honest review..
OMG LOVED IT!! I am a new fan of Avery Flynn.
I really loved this book. This was my first read by Avery Flynn and I was definitely not disappointed. I did go back and read The Negotiator (Book 1) for good measure.
I really loved everything about Hudson and Felicia. Their initial run-ins are quite comical. I really loved the added humor in this story.. There were so many laugh out loud parts. You could really see yourself in some of these situations.
Hudson was such a great character and for sure lives up to the Charmer status! It is fun to see him grow. There is just something about Felicia that has him hooked. It was great to see him so excited for her passion with her Honeypot Ants. I also loved how his hidden secrets open up and to see him deal with them. He is a known fixer, but he could also use some work to stay true to who he really is.
Felicia was also amazing. She could definitely be a best friend in real life. She is witty, funny and true to herself. In her own way she branches out to become the fixer. Her passion is her Honeypot Ants and her research. Could she fall for Hudson? Can she get inside to learn his biggest secret?
This is a must read. Don't let the humor fool you! This book also has some HOT and steamy scenes.
This is a must read.
A nice makeover story. Hudson is known as the family charmer, he can charm his way to any woman, well any not with a childhood crush on another man that is. Hudson sees Felicia, boxy dress and functional hair across the room and something drew him to her, as an artist he sees her unique features under those glasses and immediately needs to paint her but she's trying to get the attention of another, his brother's former best friend Tyler. Because charm seemed to have no effect on her he decided to become her Henry Higgins, her makeover master in exchange for her posing for him. His need to paint her may have been masking his true attraction for Felicia, there were sparks snapping between them...
The Charmer by Avery Flynn is the companion novel to The Negotiator.
Meet Hudson Carlyle. He's the younger brother of Sawyer from The Negotiator. He does what he's best at, he's hot, filthy rich, and usually irresistible. And now he just met the one woman in Harbor City who’s immune to his legendary charm. Nerdy ant researcher Felicia Hartigan is the unsexiest dresser ever. She trips over air. And she’s in love with totally the wrong man. Hudson can’t stop thinking about her. - the author.
Hudson is so full of himself, I couldn't believe it. He made promises to Felicia with no intent to follow up. He educates her in the art of seduction. I loved the witty banter between them. But Hudson has a major secret of his own. He hides his true self from the world.
They have a major fall out and break their not so non-relationship up. But both are miserable without each other.
The Charmer is beautifully thought out, beautifully written and beautifully told. I love the words and the characters.
I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.
I give 5 stars and say thank you, Avery Flynn !
An all around charming, fun, sweet, sensual romantic comedy that was humorous and entertaining with a zinger of chemistry! The Charmer is one of those romances with terrific characters. One a charming, irresistible, sexy man...one who is an artist and another endearing, shy yet beautiful woman who wants to come out of her shell. She thinks she knows who she wants but it takes a unique and charming man like Hudson to show her what she REALLY needs. I couldn't help but to think of this as a dream worthy romance. It was fun, sweet, sexy, and kind of enchanting. The story and plot causes my heart to flutter wildly and I just frankly...enjoyed it.
The Charmer is a seductively entertaining rom-com. I absolutely ADORED how Avery Flynn has written this book and I sighed and squirmed and had my happily ever after dream come true beautifully with this book. I kind of want to read it again!
The Charmer gets a ENTHRALLING FIVE SHOOTING STARS! It made me smile, dream big, and had that perfect mix of humor and heat! A very WORTHY read.
I usually love books where the “nerdy” character gets the “hot” one. This one missed the mark for me though. Don’t get me wrong, it was an okay read.
I never really felt the connection between Hudson and Felicia.
I really didn’t like Felicia much, at all. She’s so in love with Tyler, but yet she has sex with Hudson and calls it a “lesson”. Then she goes right back to talking about getting Tyler to fall for her. I felt like they were just playing games like highschool kids, instead of grown adults.
I didn’t really understand why Hudson kept what he did a secret for so long.
I received a copy via netgalley.
What a shame that we can only award 5 stars. Because once in a while a book comes along that stands out and I think 'THIS one. This one deserves extra accolades.'
I'm sure others have said it, but The Charmer truly will charm you. The dialogue is smart and snappy, the characters are well-rounded, and the plot will keep you reading straight through from the moment you read the very first page. I'm not ashamed to admit that I DEVOURED it in a single afternoon.
Sex scenes: H-O-T yet not tacky. 5/5
Would I spend my hard-earned $ on this? yes
Would I recommend to friends? yes
Is this a Kindle Keeper (do not delete on pain of death)? yes!
And now I'm off to check out Flynn's other books.
QuickShot Review
I enjoyed my first Avery Flynn book. Hudson Carlyle and Felicia Hartigan’s romance is the second in the Harbor City series but it’s not necessary to read the first book to enjoy this one. I actually had the first book buried on my Mountain o' TBR, but hadn't gotten around to it, since I'd heard mixed reviews. Normally reading out of order makes me OCD, but I'm glad I forged ahead because Hudson and Felicia's romance was worth the read.
Hudson has secrets. Felicia is an open book. There’s a bit of opposites attract mixed into this “fall for each other while trying to hook up the heroine with another man” trope. What I loved is that Hudson truly is attracted and way into Felicia way before any mild type of “makeover” aspect, which was refreshing. Felicia also shows her true feelings for Hudson throughout the book, so I don't think the reader is ever in doubt as to how these two feel for each other, unlike them. Sigh.
What I wasn’t a huge fan of was the fact that this romance depends heavily on the misunderstanding/jealousy scenario and it can push the envelope with it. There’s really no “safety gang” issues in the physical sense, so no worries but I may have rolled my eyes a time or two when these two were so oblivious to their feelings for each other and completely jealous of other people. If the jealousy angle isn’t your thing, you may not enjoy this. However, when all is said and done, and the inevitable dramatic dustups aside (and the inevitable setup for the next romance), I liked it and I would recommend it to others who would like this type of light, contemporary romance.
This is the first book I have read by Avery Flynn, but it definitely will not be the last. Loved the story of rich playboy Hudson Carlyle and nerdy but sassy Felicia Hartigan. He makes her come alive and she makes him want things he never has before. A 5 star read!
Hudson is the charmer in the Carlyle family. He's not into the family business like his brother Sawyer, as he would much rather be out at his cabin painting. As Hudson is the charmer in the family, his mother would like him to use his charms to help reconcile his brother with his best friend Tyler. While at the fundraiser, Hudson spies a girl (Felicia) who can't take her eyes off Tyler and he can't help feel sorry for her because he knows she is not Tyler's type. So he agrees to help her catch Tyler's eye, but what he really wants is for her to realize that she doesn't need Tyler when she can have him. But what happens when she doesn't fall for your charm and your plan goes up in smoke?
This is a RomCom with lots of steam. It brings in characters from the first book ... Sawyer and Clover ... and I think that Tyler and Everly could possibly be the third book. A great read!
I received an ARC copy courtesy of Entangled Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
Hudson took one look at Felicia and knew he would do anything to have her by his side. The only thing wrong with that is that Felicia has had a crush on one of his friends for years. Desperate to get closer to her he hatches a plan to help her get her heart's greatest desire. Felicia has no idea what's coming and she slowly realizes maybe it wasn't Tyler she wanted all along.
