Cowboy Up (Coming Home, #3)
by Harper Sloan
Harper Sloan has created a trilogy that is heart rendering impossible to put down. Clayton the big brother of this trio of dynamic characters is the last to find love. He has sacrificed everything he could to protect his siblings, acting more of a father figure than their alcoholic abusive father ever could. Maverick came back to town, and found the girl of his dreams protected loved and supported by his big brother and sister. Quinn was able to reconnect to her lost love that had been forced by outside factors to leave her. Now it is Clayton’s turn. What he did not expect is who it was that connected all the broken pieces with in him. They just need to overcome their combined Ugly and find the beauty within.
Yes, we get our Clay book. I think this was my most anticipated book in the series. I was not sure how Harper, was going to get our brooding Clay, in the right frame of mind to want a relationship. I loved how thie story was not this long drawn out affair. Clay and Caroline meet and then it is game on from that moment. I thought the author did a fantastic job of connecting the characters ,it never felt forced. I am a fan of a series encompassing all the characters that we have grown to love. Each book lets us get to know the leads, but the supporting casts play a major role in the underlying stories.
Clay, he is just perfection. I know that is a vast statement but he really is. He has been the one who has always been there for his siblings and Leighton. He put everything on hold to keep the family business up and running. He had believed for so long that he does not need love in his life. Until Caroline.
Caroline, aka, Carrie...aka, Linney, believes she is broke. She is shy and just wants to fade into the background for the rest of her life. Divorced and sort of running from her past, leads her back home and unbeknownst to her, into Clay's arms. A chance encounter leads to a beautiful love story.
I loved that aspect of family in the series. You do not have to share blood to be family. Parents that are absent,: parents that have passed away or just a horrible relationship with a parent. The Davis siblings have crated an extend family and the love runs deep. I appreciate that this was told in a way that didn't spend chapter after chapter dwelling on the bad,.
Clay and Caroline just made me smile so much and of course the comic relief of Quinn. Maverick, broke my heart again, but with good reason.. I love this series and hope that maybe there willl be a revist at some point.
The Final book in the Coming Home series brings us an abused woman and an emotional detached Cowboy.
Caroline escaped her abusive ex years prior but going through something traumatic like that leaves it’s scars. She wanted to move home but only comes close enough to the town next over because she doesn’t want anything to do with the mother who refused to help her. She’s got her two best friends and that’s all she needs, until she meets a Mysterious cowboy at a bar.
Clayton Davis is slowly being consumed by the heaviness of responsibility and the loneliness he feels living a life without someone by his side. He’s been badly burned by a previous ex and still struggles with the abandonment of his mother. Clay believes he’ll never let another women in that close again.
Clay and Caroline quickly became my favorite out of this series. This was such a sweet low angst read that had enough action in it to keep it interesting. Leading up to this book, I really thought Clay was going to be the one with the most resistance. Instead he knew Caroline was different and really made this book into why it was my favorite.
I love that Clay gave Caroline all of him. There were no games, just honesty, love and protection. What more could you want from a sexy cowboy? ARC provided by NetGalley.
I have been waiting for what feels like centuries to sink my teeth into Clayton Davis's story!
Ever since Last Rider there had been one character that laid heavy on my mind. one character that intrigued me and caught my attention every damn time he was mentioned, that character being Clayton Davis.
Caroline hasn't had an easy life, with a emotional abusive mama and a physically abusive ex, her relationship wrap sheet is shit. five years later after leaving her ex, she decides to ditch the shy timid girl and bring on the bad. she meets a dark cowboy at her best friend bar. A dark cowboy that is about to show Caroline, being bad can be good.
Clayton never imagined walking into his friends bar one night, could unknowingly alter his views on life. one glance at Caroline is all it took to change everything he thought he wanted in life.
Clayton and Caroline's story is a bit of a whirlwind. but one thing I love about this couple....There where no secrets between them! they laid all their ugly out in the open and started their relationship on a clean slate.... meaning there is no nagging drama or he said/she said moments getting in the way.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting his story line to go in this direction. Given this man was always against relationships, I was shocked to find him falling so fast. This was the only downside and ultimately why I gave this book a 4.5 star rating. As for an emotional level, I loved every aspect of this novel. I loved the fact that these two characters where both emotionally scarred, i loved how fate stepped in and put these two back in each other's paths. This novel was clearly thought out along with the whole damn series.
I am sad to see this series wrap up but what a way to end it! I loved the hell out of each character. from Mavericks stubbornness, to Quinn's quirkiness, and ending with Claytons mysteriousness and his secretive alpha vibe I can definitely see myself rereading this series again pretty soon.
4.5 Stars for this sweet cowboy and his girl. I thought Cowboy Up was almost perfect. I totally loved the cheesiness of their story! It workes for me. I had a hard time with the other books in this series but I totally fell for this cowboy.
It's true that Clayton Davis is more ridged than his siblings but he's had to take on so much at a young age. He's looking for a little freedom on the road and can't help be drawn to Caroline.
Caroline hasn't had it easy herself. With the help of a few close friends she's been able to succeed.
Their relationship started out as a one night stand, both were smitten with the other and wanted more.
While I enjoyed the book, the ending was a bit over the top for me. I didn't think it need to be.
The third and final book in this series was absolutely worth the wait! I love the way this author writes, her characters flow seamlessly from page to page, the story is told so beautifully it makes the book hard to put down! You will not be disappointed by this book!

While I have enjoyed all three books in the Coming Home series because of the appealing couples and original plots, I must say that Clay and Caroline’s story is my favorite. I was immediately drawn into their lives when they first met, and every following scene featuring this dynamic couple only made me adore them even more. Both had unpleasant circumstances in their backgrounds, and these situations actually had them feeling closer because it led to a mutual understanding for problems dealing with family and relationships. Harper Sloan makes the road to finding lasting happiness exceedingly bumpy for Clay and Caroline, and I am just glad I was along for the enthralling ride. COWBOY UP is contemporary romance at its most entertaining.
The reason Caroline Michaels came to a bar one night was to hopefully lift her spirits by consuming some alcohol, never anticipating any of the men there would notice her. She grew up in the nearby Texas town of Pine Oak, and coming back to the area has her recalling some painful memories. Caroline wants to make some changes in her life by leaving the past behind, and there is no time like the present to start. When asked by a stranger to leave with him, there is no mistaking what will happen later, and the night is definitely memorable for both of them.
Clayton Davis has undertaken lots of responsibilities for years, and his biggest one was being in charge of running the family ranch. He also finds it hard not to continue watching over his two younger siblings, though they are now married. He never expects to have a permanent relationship, but he certainly enjoyed the one night spent with Caroline. When an event has the two reconnecting, Clay and the rather shy bookstore owner decide to explore more fully what they felt that fateful night.
Harper Sloan delved into the innermost hopes and fantasies of Clay and Caroline with believable reactions, where emotions are often expressed with an almost overwhelming intensity. I do not know when I have experienced the sentiments of a character with such a powerful force as those repeatedly conveyed in COWBOY UP. Whether individuals were particularly joyful or suffering great misery, I also endured every single feeling right along with them. Clay has been a protector for a long time, as he tried to make things better for his brother and sister. When he meets Caroline, his gut tells him that she could benefit from his help and he is certainly willing to oblige. With his backing, she just might become a stronger woman while also giving him something important in return. I laughed so many times when clever comebacks were spoken by this couple, and I absolutely felt the fiery heat when they had sex. COWBOY UP will long be remembered for its heatedly steamy encounters.
Though the main focus of the story is on Clay and Caroline, his brother and sister plus their spouses from the previous books make plenty of appearances along with her two best friends. Conversations range for delightfully humorous to very insightful, causing many smiles and a few misty eyes. There is even a little suspense to increase the heartrate. An outstanding conclusion to a compelling series.
I voluntarily reviewed the book from the publisher via NetGalley, and all comments are my honest opinion
I am a huge fan of cowboys, and a huge fan of Harper Sloan, so of course I am also a fan of this new series of her ;)
After enjoying the first two books, we have now come to book 3 in the series and it's time for Clay's story.
Clay is the oldest of the Davis clan and I was very curious to see what Harper had in store for him. To me he seemed like the more mature and serious one, in the previous books. Turns out I was right about that. He was the one taking care of the famaily and the ranch.
Clay is also pretty lonely. Not that he is bothered by this, he is too busy to be in a relationship anyways. So he sticks with one night stands...like the one he had with Caroline... :P
Caroline has just escaped an abusive relationship. One night, shy Caroline does something out of character and has a one night standk with a hot ans mysterious cowboy....
The two of them didn't think they would run into each other again.....but of course they do ;) Turns out they also know each other better than they thought.
Something inside Clay, calls for him to protect and keep Caroline safe. Guess he changed his mind about the "no relationships" :P
These two were very very sweet together....maybe even a bit too sweet for my liking at times. They were also quite HOT, but you won't hear me complaining about the hotness !!
With this hot and sweet little number comes the end of this series. All the Davis siblings are happy and in love, as they should be ;)
If you love cowboys, second chance love, and you're a fan of sweet and sexy stories, than you should definitely give this series a try.
This is the Harper Sloan I know and love. As the Coming Home series progressed, I feel like she settled into the characters more and that in turn let me connect with them more. Especially in Cowboy Up- which is by far my favorite of the series. And a big part of that is Clayton Davis.
Oh my, my, my! That man swooped in and stole the book. That's not to say that Caroline didn't hold her own because she so did. There was just something about Clayton that made me swoon hard. I think it was his protectiveness coupled with the sweet way he treated his Linny. Could also be the sexy way he treated her when they were alone.
I loved seeing how much these two grew; both as a couple and individually. It was great to see Caroline realize her inner strength and put it to use. And to see Clayton lighten up and focus on something besides the ranch. Despite how much progress they made towards the future they were building together, their past just wouldn't let them be. Cue the drama and heart pounding!
The climax of this book was what drew me to Harper Sloan's writing when she first started. There was drama and family and forgiveness and romance. And some super sexy times, too! I loved that while Cowboy Up was Clayton's story, all of the Davis siblings, and their significant others, played a big role. This book was exactly the ending that the Coming Home series needed.
This third book in the Coming Home Series is a mix of romance (SEXY romance), the importance of family and friends with a spark of suspense.
Caroline Michaels describes herself as an “Introvert book nerd who can handle fictional people a lot better than I can deal with real ones.” I immediately knew I was going to like this character. Caroline is recovering from an abusive marriage. She headed back to her home town growing up and opened a dream come true for her, a bookstore called The Sequel.” Suddenly after almost five years, she is getting mysterious calls from her ex, and keeping her on edge. Her best friends Luke and Lucy Hazel (twins) own a bar, where Caroline meets a tall, dark and gorgeous cowboy. She’s never had a one night stand, and this one is going into the record books.
Clayton Davis, is that tall, dark, cowboy. He owns a ranch, and most of the time he can push away his loneliness. Both his brothers have found love and happiness, which compounds his aloneness. He was betrayed in the worst way in his last relationship, and decided he just wasn’t cut out love. Until he meets the mysterious beauty from a night he can’t forget. Then in truly romantic fashion, he rode in on his trusty steed and whisked Caroline away from a nasty confrontation. Maybe it was time to give this “relationship” a chance. But there’s trouble. Clayton’s ex starts appearing claiming they’re back together, Caroline’s dream of a book store goes up in flames, suspected to be arson.
This can be read as a standalone, but the first two books are so enjoyable I wouldn’t skip them. Hoping there are more Coming Home books in the future.
I received this novel from the publisher and Netgalley for review.

Finally Clayton's book! it is fair to say i have been impatiently waiting for Clay to get his HEA since the first book!
He is the most loyal and caring older brother, who knows all the right things to say to encourage and lift up his younger siblings on their journeys back to the Loves of their lives, HE DESERVES HIS HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
Let' break down why this story is my favorite of the three books in the series
1) Clayton is always there for his siblings and knows what to say and how to say it (obviously the man knows what is up with love)
2) Even though he says he isn't looking for anything serious and has a one night stand with our heroine, Caroline, when he realizes his mistake he admits it. He doesn't brood over the fact he wants more then just once and deny it to himself. He just goes " turns out i want more" and he goes after it
3) The heroine is an abuse survivor! She knew something was wrong and she got out, she isn't mooning over the past and how the guy wasn't always like that, she knew it was wrong and got out and started her life in a new town
4) The Heroine's friends, twin siblings that watch out for her like their own family. I really enjoyed all the scenes with Luke and Lucy, they were fun and charmingly forward and i hope one day we might get a story for each of them.
5) The Crazy Ex...that provides the drama...i love a good drama in a book this heartwarming...makes it feel like they really earn that happy ending
So if you want to feel good about two people finding each other and working through their issues together instead of apart, with a bit of crazy Ex drama this is the one for you!
Truth!!! I totally bawled my eyes out on this book. What??? Don't give me that look, I couldn't help it. But in my defense, they were happy tears. Out of all of the Davis siblings, I felt that Clay need the HEA the most. The burden he carried for his brother and sister made him the strong independent man he is. Oh and don't forget about his controlling personality, oh lord have mercy. He is just sin in a pair of wranglers. Caroline definitely nailed it, Clay was the perfect "dark cowboy".
I really enjoyed this book, and I thought that this was the perfect ending to the Davis clan. I am sad to see it end, but I hope maybe we get stories from Luke and Lucy. Luke intrigued me and Lucy is just a fun spitfire who could keep any cowboy on his toes. I will patiently wait to see what happens next.
This is the most emotional of the books.
Clay and Caroline are perfect for each other. He helps her come out of her shell and she helps him also.
Clay’s ex is crazy and not really liked by his siblings. He knows Caroline’s ex and knows things she doesn’t know about him.
There’s instant chemistry between these two and Caroline let’s go when she’s with him.
We get to catch up with Leighton and Maverick and Quinn and Tate.
I loved this series. There were funny moments and moments that had me in tears. I highly recommend this series. It’s amazing.
I was blown away from Clay and Caroline’s story. Since the beginning I’ve been anticipating Clayton’s story. He has held the world and his family on his shoulders and now I was ready for him to get his happily ever after.
This story pulled on the hearts strings and left a special place in my heart. It was so hard to put this one down. This was such a sweet and loving story that was filled with so much love and family. It was a story of emotion and perseverance. It was about getting past all the ‘uglies’ in your life to find that forever kind of love. It will definitely fill your heart with all the feels.
Clay was a sensual and sexy cowboy who had me melting in a puddle of goo. When Caroling sat next to him at the bar I knew it was gonna be one hell of a night. Oh and what a night it was.
When Clay and Caroline’s paths crossed a second time it was fate. No question about that. It’s the ultimate second chance. It’s the grab your missing piece and never let go. Who knew the brooding brother, the dark cowboy could be so sweet.
Harper wrote a beautifully sweet and sexy story with the most perfect ending. Through three books she took us on an emotional journey with the Davis clan. It made me laugh and cry and want to hug my family and never let go. I’m sorry this is the end but it was such a beautiful ride.
Clayton is back.....
Clayton Davis truly believed he didn't deserve to find happiness and love like his siblings had. Too broken, too lost, and alone. But when Caroline walks into his life, she shows him what it's like to be loved.
My heart damn near burst out of my chest with Cowboy Up. I had a smile on my face from start to finish, Caroline and Clay's story was a sweet, passionate, love story that I highly recommend everyone to read. If you love cowboys and the true meaning of family, this series is for you!
Harper Sloan never disappoints.
“We all have ugly in our past, sweetness. You just have to realize it was really life teachin’ you a lesson. When you find something that finally proves all that ugly was worth survivin’, it doesn’t look so bad when you see what kinda reward you get in the end.”
This book was fantastic. I have been really looking forward to Clay Davis' story from this 'Coming Home' series, and let me tell you, it did not let me down!! I devoured it and finished in less than 24 hours, absolutely absorbing every last word of this beautiful and emotional story. I have enjoyed all 3 books, but tis one was by far my favourite and Clay definitely olds a special place in my heart now.
Clayton has been through the emotions over the years. If you've read the other two books in the series, you'll know how much his Mum and Dad had am impact on his life, and the life of his brother and little sister. He was basically the strength in the family, and kept the others going through the bad times. He's kept the family ranch going and has always been the pillar of strength and support for those around him. Leaving very little time for himself...apart from work.
When Caroline meets a 'dark cowboy' one night and has a night of passion and being 'bad', little does she know who it is. These two are absolutely destined to be together. From their similarities, to their polar opposites (she's scared of horses, he runs a ranch!!), these two are perfect for one another and this story portrays it in the best of ways. Clay has just the right amount of alpha dominance, but in a totally protective way. I love Caroline's strength, and how that strength only grew with Clay standing by her side.
This story really does have a bit of everything, with some real heart in the mouth moment, tension, plenty of love and smoking hot scenes, it's great. Plus the added brilliance of the close relationship with the rest of the Davis clan and their respective husbands, the close family bonds and friendships that form!!
That epilogue - perfection!!! But there is part of me that hopes for a little more in the future - I'm pretty sure there are books for Luke and Lucy out there just begging to be written sometime!! :)
A must read in my eyes!!
Wow!! I loved the first two books, but this one takes the cake. I loved this one, it is definitely my favorite. Clayton was the perfect match for Caroline. He was sweet, sexy, loving and so protective. Caroline came out of her shell with the love of Clayton, she was funny, sweet and so caring. This was the best one of them all. This is one I will be rereading many times. Well done, Harper!!
Once again, Harper Sloan has brought me to my knees with her beautiful writing and exquisite romance. Cowboy up is the third book in the Coming Home series and tells the story of the oldest Davis brother, Clayton. If you have read the two previous books in the series you will remember him as being the broody older brother with no intention of finding love. But, as we have come to expect in romance, fate has other plans for these men who don't feel like they need to find love to be happy. Now, while this is typical within the genre, Sloan's books are far more epic then reformed bad boy finding love. The emotion, build-up, and feeling of undying love is shown in the most beautiful ways and readers are likely to feel every breath and every moment of their love. I have said it before and I will say it again, her books (specifically in this series) are FILLED with honest and raw emotion and they stand apart from any other romance book I have ever read before. I have fallen deeply in love with the authors books after reading this series and I plan to continue reading all her books in the future based on it.
** Please, Please, PLEASE write a spin-off of this series featuring the couples children. I can see some amazing friends to lovers romance in the future (crosses fingers) **
Without going into the plot, I will give a light overview of what readers can expect when they grab a copy of Cowboy Up. First, you're going to meet some amazing cowboys (and one cowgirl) with hearts bigger then the country. These men (and Quinn), although hesitant to find love, are going to find it in the most unexpected ways. The buildup to all of their relationships is pretty easy and uncomplicated, but external forces will play a part in their likelihood of a future. This book in particular has a bit of suspense added to the mix, so readers should be aware of this, but other than that, the plot is simple but powerful.
The characters in the book are utterly amazing. I love their hearts, the way they interact with one another, and the sense and close bond of family. Readers hearts are going to SWELL when they feel the powerful bond they all have with one another.
The small town feel in the story is also well told. Readers can expect to feel like they are a part of the community even though there isn't a lot of interaction between the community and these characters. I suppose that in order to feel this you would want to read all three books.
The conflicts in each book (including this one) are all interconnected. Family issues and difficulties with the characters parents play a huge role in their hesitancy and fear of committing, but you'll have to read the stories in order to form a deep understanding of these issues. Just be aware that it can be emotional. We all want to believe that life and families are all hearts, sunshine, and rainbows but some families aren't like that. This book SHOWS that no matter what kind of family you come from that you can overcome it and make your life as meaningful and beautiful as you want.
With that, I loved this book and I LOVE this series as a whole. It's my favorite SERIES of 2017. I hope the author will consider a spin-off (as I mentioned above) because I would love to see new love stories for all the kids.
If you're looking for a book/series to get swept away in, one that will make you FEEL, swoon, and fall hopelessly devoted and in love with then I recommend this one to you.
Caroline is visiting with her best friend in the bar that he owns where she meets a dark, mysterious cowboy. She decides to "be bad" and to go out for a night of fun with this cowboy she only knows as Davis. Months later, she finds out who he really is, THE Clayton Davis. Their attraction is real as their relationship evolves and they deal with two crazy exes. A good solid romance that will keep you reading way past your bedtime!
Cowboy Up by Harper Sloan will be available December 19, 2017 from Simon Schuster Publishers. An egalley of this book was made available by the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
I'm just not a cowboy romance kinda gal, I won't knock the story line and plot and the characters I liked I just don't really enjoy these settings or kind of story's. So if your a cowboy romance fan this is your bread and butter
