Dollycas’s Thoughts
Two sorcerers and a wizard walk into a town meeting . . . and before the meeting starts one of them finds a dead body.
Kailyn Wilde is back and finds herself right in the middle of another murder investigation. Between trying to hone her magickal skills and taking care of the customers flowing into Abracadabra she really doesn’t have the time she needs to devote to catching a killer so she needs to wrap of this case quickly. She ends up casting a few spells to keep herself safe as she questions almost the whole town, past and present. Someone has to know something.
I so enjoy the way Sharon Pape brings a story to life. These characters are amazing. Kailyn is missing her mother and grandmother but they do “pop” in to visit frequently, encouraging her to learn more about her craft along with some other mostly unwanted advice. Aunt Tilly stays busy with her tea shop and readings and does her best to keep wizard Merlin from conjuring up any trouble. He definitely brings the comedy to the story. Folks around town know him as the “distant English cousin”. He loves pizza and television but he still wishes he could go back to his own time.
The mystery this time centers around a hotel being built that could change everything about the New Camel tourists and residents have come to love. The suspects could be anyone wanting to stop the project or someone wanting to be sure the project is pushed through. I loved the twists and was shocked by the ending. The author has a very descriptive way of writing that made me as the reader feel I was there every step of the way but I must have missed a crucial clue 🙂 I figured it out the same time as Kailyn.
The was another magickal story for this series. There is a fun paranormal theme that entertains from start to finish. I am excited for the next book, Magick Run Amok will be released May 1, 2018. I am looking forward to another Great Escape!
A easy, fun read but couldn't take the 'magic' bit seriously,
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
That Olde White Magick is a magical read! The story is strong enough to be a standalone, but the series is so enchanting, why would you want to skip book one? The characters are hilarious and engaging, especially Merlin, and seem to get thrown into all of the conflict in town. The way the communicate with one another, the relationships between them, is what makes this story so special. A well written, fun mystery and a series that is definitely on my must read list.
This is the second book in the Abracadabra Mystery series. Kailyn isn’t really for the building of a new hotel in her quaint town, so she makes sure to attend the town meeting about it, along with most of the town. Even before the meeting starts, it is derailed by the murder of one of the board members, with Kailyn’s Aunt Tilly being one of the people who find her. Before long, Kailyn has to use her detective skills to find the killer so her aunt isn’t accused of the crime. But will she find the killer before another person is murdered? I absolutely love this series! It’s fun, well-written, and has great characters, and this installment is just as great as the first one. I really like how even though there is magic use, Kailyn doesn’t completely rely on it to get some sleuthing done. And, oh, we can’t forget Merlin. He is such a great character and adds so much humor to the book. If you love great cozies with a dash of magic, this book is definitely for you. And, if you haven’t read the first one, you can dive right into this one, but the first is well-worth a read. Highly recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books/Lyrical Underground for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I had a lot of fun reading this one. I absolutely love the characters, especially Merlin. The mystery was really good, and the reveal was suspenseful with a dash of humor at the end.
I gather this is the second book in the series and I haven't read the first book, I am always doing this but it didn't seem to matter, I soon got into the story and caught up with the characters. I love reading lightweight fun books like this in between the darker thrillers and dystopian books among others, I love mixing my genres, and this was perfect as a highly imaginative fast paced book with likable characters.I thought it was genius including a somewhat delinquent Merlin as a character, just brilliant.I really enjoyed this book the pace was good it kept me entertained and I would read more by this author. This was fun to read and I loved it.
That Olde White Magick
An Abracadabra Mystery, Book #2

Synopsis:
It’s time to work her crime-solving magic again . . .
Kailyn Wilde enjoys running her shop, Abracadabra, in the quaint New York hamlet of New Camel, where she lives with her six cats. Her family’s been here for centuries, and she’d like to keep up the tradition. But the place may never be the same if a big hotel gets built, so she does her civic duty and attends a town meeting along with her aunt Tilly . . . and Merlin. Yes, that Merlin—though he gets introduced to folks as her “distant English cousin.” The wizard is pretty grumpy about being transported here, but there are things about the modern world he doesn’t mind—like pizza.
Kailyn was prepared for a heated debate about the hotel, but she wasn’t expecting murder. When Tilly finds the body of a board member outside the schoolhouse, Kailyn doesn’t want any suspicion cast on the wrong person. She plans to crack this case, even if she has to talk to every living soul in town—plus a few departed ones . . (Goodreads)
Review:
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Kailyn is a good witch and tries not to use her magick in her everyday life. But sometimes it cannot be helped. Aunt Tilly is still a quirky lady and you never know what Merlin will do. They both keep Kailyn on her toes but she knows that she is lucky to still have Aunt Tilly in her life.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. I was afraid to read the spells that Kailyn sold to her customers because I was scared I would cast them on myself. Although this book is about a witch, that theme was never overwhelming and most of the time I forgot that Kailyn and Aunt Tilly were witches. It is just a good cozy mystery with a great mystery and great characters that drew me in and pulled me along until the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted (witch crafted) cozy. I am already looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I finished That Olde White Magick on October 23rd, this is the 2nd book in the Abracadabra Mystery series. I read the first one last spring and it was so captivating I was thrilled when I was selected to read book 2. Sharon Pape has a enchanted me with the very idea of this series. I love paranormal cozy mysteries and the fantasy aspect of this one gives it a special place in my heart. Sharon writes about a Witch who prefers the term Sorcerer and she works with her aunt in their 400 year old Magick and tea shop. Oh but there is more, living with her aunt in book two is the wizard Merlin who seems to be stuck out of time and place in the story and yet ads such a wonderful element to this cozy mystery series. Befuddled and Belligerent, Merlin is the perfect addition to the story, though his magic seems to be somewhat missing, his knowledge of old magick is not, his love of food, pizza and pies especially are just some of the reasons you can't help but love Merlin. There is also the great mystery to the story as well, a fairly gruesome murder, followed by a mysterious discovery and a town at odds over development lend themselves to a story I could not put down. Loved it!
Sharon Pape's That Olde White Magick is out November 7th by Lyrical Underground
Kailyn enjoys her magic shop. She only practices white magic and she deals with a lot of herbs and oils. Those who believe get more magic than one who don't but her products work for everybody. Right now she's working on teleporting things. But when she goes to a public meeting on the new hotel coming to town, she finds that there's been murder done...
Kensington Books and Net Galley allowed me to read this book for review (thank you). It will be published November 7th.
Her aunt and another lady discover the body and she is in shock. Kailyn is right there to take care of her and she ends up in the middle of this mystery. The woman was a board member. Was she killed because of how she would vote?
There's no end of suspects. There's the developer himself, his administrator in town, the board president, her husband she's divorcing, and even the janitor on the list. It seems Kailyn gevelops more questions as she goes.
Then the vote passes and they begin draining the swamp. Another body is found...
There's bits of humor with Kailyn's six cats and Merlin hanging around wanting to do spells. The mystery has substance and Kailyn and her boyfriend wander way too close to death. It's a good thing there's a bit of magic in the family. It comes in handy here and there.
How fun is a magic shop in small town New Camel, New York as the setting for a cozy! Kailyn and her aunt Tillie have enough to deal with the shop let alone the possibility that a large hotel is coming to town. A murder is the last thing they need- especially since they are suspects. Merlin the wizard, who is a hoot, shows up to help and to make you laugh. This is the second in a series but I hadn't read the first and didn't have the least bit of problem enjoying this one. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is a sprightly entertaining cozy with good characters and a real sense of fun.
Kailyn is an interesting character. The book is fast-paced, it contains some laugh out loud moments and it's entertainment. Thanks for the copy.
Kaitlyn Wilde considers herself to be sorceror, not a witch, and the owner of Abracadabra, which she inherited from her mother and grandmother. The interplay among the characters was good and the mystery entertaining, not obvious. If you are a fan of paranormal cozies, and even if you're not, you should enjoy this book. I will be going back to read the first one in the series, it sounded good too.
This is a fun, well written cozy mystery with a real sense of humor. I enjoyed the plot, the small town setting, and the characters and look forward to the next book in the series. The supernatural tone of the book is just plausible enough, and I liked it very much.
Kailyn Wilde is a witch, although she prefers sorcerer, and she owns Abracadabra, a shop that sells herbs, potions, lotions, and the occasional spell. Her Aunt Tilly is also a sorcerer and back in book #1, they conjured Merlin (the famous Merlin!) to their town of New Camel, NY. He gets into a lot of trouble using rogue spells that are out of place in modern times, and Kailyn and her aunt have a heck of a time keeping him under control.
The entire town assembles for a meeting to discuss building a new hotel. The town board of New Camel is there, all except for one woman who Aunt Tilly finds dead in the parking lot. Kailyn gets involved in the investigation, along with her on and off reporter boyfriend Travis. They dig deep into the lives of the other board members and townspeople before the murder is finally solved, but not before they are put in grave danger themselves.
I highly recommend this book. Thanks to Kensington Books, Lyrical Underground, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
That Olde White Magick is the second book in this series by Sharon Pape.
Kailyn is the owner of Abracadabra, a wonderful shop in the town of New Camel, New York. Her shop is an eclectic mix of herbs, potions and spells. Next door to her shop, is her Aunt Tilly's place, where she offers psychic readings as well as magnificent teas and mouthwatering desserts.
When a town meeting is held to vote on expanding their quaint little town, Kailyn attends the meeting with Aunt Tilly's and Merlin . Yes, that's right, Merlin.
Unfortunately, the town meeting is thrown off course when an untimely death takes place outside of the meeting venue.
Kailyn loves to investigate and her sometimes boyfriend Travis is determined to get the story.
When secrets become unraveled, Kailyn may need a bit more than a spell to get her out of trouble.
This is a fun story, filled with laugh out loud moments that will keep you chuckling long after you've finished the book.
This can easily be read as a standalone book.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Book number two does not disappoint!
Great characters and a well written whodunit.
This series is a delightful gem.

Series: An Abracadabra Mystery
Author: Sharon Pape
Genre: Witch Cozy
Publisher: Lyrical Underground
That Olde White Magick, book two in the “An Abracadabra Mystery” series is a wonderful addition. The storyline is creative and entertaining. The characters are lively and fun to get to know. Ms. Pape’s writing is fluid, her charters are easily relatable, and the plot is smooth without any extra detail that is not needed.
The character of Kailyn is fascinating. She is a witch but prefers to be called a sorcerer. She takes most things in stride, except when it comes to anyone harming her animals or her family, including Merlin. Her store is a magic shop, and she doesn’t hesitate to let people know her magick is real when asked. She tries to remain calm, even under trying circumstance. Like when she has to give her boyfriend, Travis time to adjust to her being a witch. Or even when her mother and grandmother appear as clouds even though they are dead. Kailyn would be the perfect friend, or relative and readers are sure to love her ability to find out the truth and to risk everything for those she cares about.
Kailyn’s aunt Tillie is more motherly than an aunt. She takes care of Merlin and runs a tea time and cake shop connected to Kailyn’s magick shop. Tillie will remind readers of their favorite grandmother or aunt. The one that is frail physically yet strong emotionally and mentally. She is not the person a bad guy wants to tangle with. Other characters in this book are funny, loving, and even a bit odd but they are all interesting and blend well with the main character and storyline.
The setting of New Camel is a mix of old and new, close to major cities without losing its identity. The tourist trade keeps the town going and helps keep it from becoming just another victim of industry and urban clog.
Reading this book will give the reader a sense of belonging, community, and friendship. That Olde White Magick is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good whodunit mixed with magick, ghosts, murders, and family. If the reader enjoys writers such as Madelyn Alt, or Bailey Cates they will love this writer and series.

That Olde White Magick by Sharon Pape is the second book in the An Abracadabra Mystery series. This series is cozy mysteries with a twist, the main character is a witch who runs a magic shop. In the first book readers were introduced to Kailyn Wilde who had inherited her mother and grandmother’s centuries old shop, Abracadabra, when they were unfortunately involved in an accident. Coming from a long line of those with magical abilities in the small town of New Camel Kailyn does her best to keep the magic flowing in the shop while keeping the witchcraft under wraps. Kailyn and her aunt Tilly had happened upon the body of their lawyer when they were supposed to be there to finalize their estate so the two became suspects and had to do a bit of their own investigating to help solve that murder.
Now in That Olde White Magick Kailyn and Tilly have found themselves yet again dealing with the police when they are attending a special town meeting that was called to deal with a new hotel that may be built. Kailyn was worried about the proposal so she and her aunt had brought their magician friend, Merlin, along to the meeting to see how the council voted and raise their concerns but Tilly happened upon the body of a council member which again puts them in the middle of yet another murder investigation.
An Abracadabra Mystery series first caught my attention last year when the first book was being released and since I’m always a fan of a good cozy mystery with a unique setting or characters I immediately knew I had to try this one out. The mixing of the genres and brining magic and mayhem into the cozy world works so well in these books and is such a fun addition to the normal murder mystery solving by the characters.
And speaking of the characters, this series certainly has some likable ones. I think for me the moments we get with Merlin absolutely steal the show in these books but I”m also a fan of Tilly and Kailyn too of course. The town the story is set in also has that nice small town vibe making it to where everyone seems to know everyone which is great for a setting with the character off questioning people and trying to beat the law to solving a murder. After two books in this series I’d definitely still recommend these both and while best to read in order they do each feature their own case so it is possible to read as a standalone if necessary.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Great mystery, with supernatural elements. My students will enjoy this novel. I will be adding it to my next book order.
That Olde White Magick is a fantastic mystery filled with humor, suspense, romance and of course Magick - the kind that keeps the reader glued to the page and leaves them with a smile on their face. Between the wonderful cast of characters - including Merlin who is both out of his time and his comfort zone - and Kailyn’s six cats, and the delightful plot, Sharon Pape’s mystery has a lot to offer readers.
That Olde White Magick begins with a meeting and a murder. New Camel is divided on the issue of rezoning - a hotel wants to build a large resort in a wetlands area. Some hope for the added business that the hotel will bring. Others fear the large hotel will bring many changes to the small town whose appeal lies in its quaint nature. When one of the council members in favor of the hotel is murdered just before a debate, it looks like the reason was her position on the hotel. As Kailyn’s Aunt Tilly discovered the body, and Kailyn has her doubts about the investigator in charge, she starts her own investigation, aided by her reporter love interest and her well meaning clan both living and departed.
Merlin’s antics are hilarious and it's clear that he and Aunt Tilly are definitely a handful. I loved the characters and definitely plan to read more of this delightful, dare I say magical cosy series.
