This is book 5 of the Jake Travis series. Jake is looking for the person that abducted and killed his sister. When the most promising suspect turns up on the beach dead, it throws the whole case into question. Can he solve the case and make sense of what occurred?
The prose style of this book is reminiscent of the Private Detective novels of the 1960s, which is rather enjoyable! The key character, Jake, is our hero, and although there are times when he may have over-stepped the mark, we never lose empathy for him. Some unexpected twists and turns before the truth of his sister's disappearance is revealed
I was provided a free copy of this title for review from Netgalley.
This was a good suspense about a man who lost his sister when they were young and trying to follow all the clues to figure out what happened all those years ago. There are a lot of threats around every corner and you never really know what turn the story is going to take next.I loved the plot, what I didn't love is that you are supposed to believe that this man is in love with his girlfriend yet every other woman he sees he is so "taken"with them and he has to comment on every aspect of their looks and likability. I couldn't get past how annoyed with this I was enough to actually enjoy what the plot was trying to do.
The twists & turns are a nice surprise, but the internal narrative dialogue, while making for an easy quick, leaves the protagonist's true character somewhat lacking. Maybe the character himself is lacking. The more explicit segments are typically slanted, but for most part I am glad I read this to the end. I will keep my eyes open for new releases in hope the author's development and experience raises my enjoyment of new titles.
A murder mystery with lots of twists and turns that keeps you hooked. I would recommend this book, This is the fifth book in the series but can definitely stand alone on it's own.
3.5 - suspenseful plot with some unsuspecting twists! Will definitely check out some more of this series! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this advanced readers copy.
Have found Robert Lane to be an engaging mystery writer. His stories set in Florida are always stock full of suspense although he often lets you know where the plot is headed and who the villains are. I read this one a good while ago but remember I really enjoyed it.
This is the first Robert Lane book I’ve read. and I really enjoyed it! I found the characters realistic with an exciting plot with good twists. I would recommend this book to others and will definitely read more from this author.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This book had me from the very beginning. I love that it kept me engaged the entire time. I couldn't wait to see how it ended. I would highly recommend to all my fellow readers. Thank you for the chance to review this book!

This was an authentic mystery set in Florida. Multi-faceted characters, most with something to hide. Jake is attempting to finally solve the mystery of his sister's disappearance that occurred when he was only seven. There are some thoroughly despicable individuals involved and just when I thought I had the villain figured out, Jake was off in another direction. The ending was superb.
This was my first book by this author, but it won't be my last! I immensely enjoyed this book—Jake Travis was a full-bodied character with a quirky, witty sense of humor and quick comebacks. The suspense was ongoing and kept me guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good thriller, with a wonderful lead character that will have you waiting to read what will come out of his mouth next. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review and can honestly say I plan to read more books by this author. I'm going back and reading the first Jake Travis book next!
I had a really hard time getting into this novel. The fact that it is fifth in a series, and I had not read the previous four, bothered me but it might not have been so bad had the author put a bit more background into the characters, often imposed without rhyme or reason, whom it felt we should already know and be familiar with. Many previous events from other novels were also referenced often which I felt was akin to joining a conversation, which had already been going on for a very long time, halfway through. The book was a bit sluggish for a large part of the story, finally hitting its stride about 3/4 of the way in. I wasn’t crazy about the cadence of the writing and sometimes it was difficult to discern who was speaking or how many people were part of a scene. Many of the situations lacked insight and seemed incredibly far fetched.
I enjoyed reading this book solely because I had to figure out what happened to his sister. Although I had suspicions toward the very end, it was still a shock and enjoyed all the twists and turns throughout the book to get there. The writing style is nothing to write home about, meaning it's not a great literary read, but more of a what the main character is always thinking in his head is written down. So many sentences are short and not complete. Makes for a faster read. There were a few parts of the book that described sexual scenes that you could tell were completely from a male author perspective and rubbed me the wrong way as a female reader. I don't mind sexually charged scenes or books, but traditionally enjoy them more when it doesn't feel degrading. I would have rated this book 4 stars instead of my 3 if not this.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing a review copy of this book.
I enjoyed my first Robert Lane thriller. This indie writer has some serious chops when it comes to writing a steamy noir. A body washes up near Jake Travis's home on the Florida coast. The man once was thought to be the killer of Jake's older sister, taken while the family was on vacation 30 years ago. But Jake knows the dead man was not involved with his sister's disappearance. He and a friend shook the guy down some time back. So who is sending this message, and what does it mean? Jake embarks on a relentless campaign to find the murderer, and it leads him to a number of unexpected places. Jake is funny, sensitive but male-stupid, occasionally vicious. It's a story with lots of ups, downs, and action!
I’ve had this thing for Jake Travis since I first met him one Sunday morning in Kensington Gardens. That was the day that he offed the wrong Cardinal. Oops Jake. (The Cardinal’s Sin, Mason Alley Publishing, 2015)
Jake is a man after this girl’s heart: he is a debonair, well-dressed, highly educated beach bum who cooks, enjoys fine spirits, listens to music on his Magnavox, enjoys his St. Pete Beach sunsets, and always rescues the damsels in distress. Did I mention that he is also a special-ops agent? In Naked We Came, we see another Jake. First, we learn that he understands the business end of a hammer (Be still, my heart—a man who remodels too!)
But we also see a side of Jake that has not appeared before--a little less snide, a little more pensive. Jake’s sister Brittany disappeared 30 years ago during a family vacation on the west coast of Florida. Her body has never been found, but she is presumed dead. Jake was supposed to be with her when she was abducted, but he went instead to the game room of the motel. He has carried this guilt throughout his life. Maybe this is the real Jake, and maybe his suppressed sorrow and guilt are some of the reasons that he displays such a devil-may-care attitude.
After the body of the supposed killer washes up on the shore near Jake’s home, he becomes the primary suspect in this killing. Naked We Came is Jake’s quest to solve his sister’s disappearance. Lane introduces one new character who was short-lived, but dynamic in my estimation. You’ll need to read the book to see what I mean, and to ponder what his impact will have on future Jake Travis books.
This is a fast-paced thriller that ends with a twist that absolutely floored me. I look forward to seeing the next installments of Jake and Company. Will Jake’s character soften with this guilt off his shoulders? What will Morgan do? Will Jake finally marry the beautiful Kathleen? Stay tuned.
My thanks to Robert Lane, Mason Alley Publishing and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting story concept, though some of the scenes seem too fantastical to believe. Maybe more development of the story as to the reasons the sister stayed away for so long may make this more believable.

Book Blurb: "Instead of killing an assassin who was known to disguise himself as Catholic cardinal in Kensington Gardens, I had plugged an actual cardinal." Chapter 13
This was a story about a man who lost his sister to a crime. When he was older the man who was suspected of killing her was washed up onshore. He jokingly told the cops he killed him but he didn't. And thus, starts the story.
The man accused of the crime said he was framed and that he never touched Jake Travis's sister. Now out of the ensuing investigation into the murder of Leonard Hawkins, it comes out the deceased may have been telling the truth about being framed. Three men were involved in the original investigation into his sister's death. The man who was murdered maintained his innocence. The investigation into his death caused unanswered questions to surface which Travis wanted to be answered. As you follow him throughout the book you take a journey into his past and present along with a side trip to governmental concerns. When you find out who done it, you may want to read it again. I did.
I recommend this book for you to read. It is engrossing and interesting. The story follows on itself as the pieces for together as if they were a puzzle. You could probably read it in one weekend. It would also be a good read for college.
Disclosure: I received this uncorrected proof from the publisher to review. I didn't receive any money at this time.
I received this through Net Galley as an advanced copy. I have never read any of the other books in this Jake Travis series but found it can be read as a stand alone. The character was interesting but I found it hard to get really invested in the story and found it to have a predictable ending, which is always disappointing when reading a thriller! Perhaps others would enjoy it more.
