I keep trying to get enthused about Robert Lane and his character, Jake Travis, but I never get there. I like the premise of Travis, his Florida environment, his sarcasm, his enjoyment of food, and the schemes in which he gets involved. “Naked We Came” is the third book I’ve read and I’m still floundering around.

Jake has a terrible past experience that haunts him. His older sister disappeared when he was about eight and her memory still haunts him. She has never been found and his entire being yearns for revenge. He believes she is dead and when he finds the person responsible, he or she will be killed.

The entire story revolves about this quest; Travis never stops agonizing about the circumstances or searching for the culprit. That’s a problem, as far as I’m concerned, because the psychological ramblings in his head go on forever getting redundant and, actually, boring.

As usual, his old friends are there to help him with whatever he needs. Lane weaves them in and out in the story until their identities turn to lobster chowder. The villains are new, but somehow familiar as though they have been recycled. The three men, all possible suspects, who are the object of his search, are also depicted in a confusing partnership of suspicion that turns murky.

I read the story in hopes of a brighter light in the Florida sunshine, but never found it. I think I’ll give up because the author is not going to change his style, one that apparently doesn’t agree with me.

A new Jake Travis adventure goes deeper into the demons bedeviling Jake as he struggles with the need to punish the person who killed his sister some thirty years in the past. The narrative goes deep onto the emotions that drive the psyche, and sinks into deep expressions of philosophy as Jake locates and interrogates a long list of friends, relatives and potential witnesses throughout the south. His support team at home is augmented by an older man he tracks down from a photograph seen is a crooked lawyers office. As in the other books of this series, a continuing dialogue explores the relationship between Jake and Kathleen as it continues to evolve. All the friends from the earlier books play a role, including his persnickety cat. The story is exciting and full of suspense, yet laced with bouts of humor. You'll gasp and chuckle as the events unfold.

Lots of twists and turns in this novel as Jake Travis tries to find out who adopted his young teenage sister 30 years ago. And if someone killed her where has her body been all this time. Jake and his friends, Morgan, Mac, Garrett and Kathleen all band together to try and find out what happened to Jake's sister and why an innocent man was killed and blamed for her kidnapping. Also who is trying to lay the blame for the innocent mans death on Jake? Enjoyable to read and to follow all the twists and turns with a satisfactory ending.
