Fresh new approach in a mystery/romance book with one of the main character being a female werewolf instead of male. Characters were well-developed, and made you feel you personally knew them. There is some graphic violence that is really realistic, so those who don't like that shouldn't read it.
"We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed."
Aaron Ryland, aka Rain, lived on the streets of Houston assuming his “typical defiant, don’t-give-a-shit teen thug persona”, but all he wanted was to stay in one place and have a normal life. Regrettably, his chance came when his mother was found dead and he was shipped off to live with his Aunt Ruby in the middle of the Texas Hill Country in New Wurzburg. Aunt Ruby is all right, but the people of this hick town are just plain weird.
Friederike Burkhart, aka Freddie, is rebellious, daring, and a challenge that Rain is ready to accept. “He’d never met anyone quite like this girl–fierce and smart and painfully sexy”. She is surrounded by her male cousins who have to be dealt with so Rain can get to know Freddie better, but there are forces more incredible to get past first.
The Enchanted Rock near New Wurzburg is steeped in magic according to the Native Americans of the area. In fact, they say the magic is strong enough to change man to beast. What does this have to do with Rain and what are these Watchers and Weavers that Freddie is talking about?
This is another young adult paranormal fantasy that has an interesting plot to the story. I enjoyed the variety of characters and the twists and turns had me guessing right to the end. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend!
Rain Ryland grew up on the streets and in shelters in Houston. His only relative is his drug addicted mother who nicknamed him Rain because he represented the storm of trouble and ruin that followed her around. Despite that and the neglect, Rain managed to grow up to be kind and willing to fight for the underdog. Once his mother ODs Rain finds himself shipped off to an aunt he didn't know he had in New Wurzberg, a small town in the hill country of Texas.
Once in New Wurzburg, Rain finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy and a culture he couldn't have even imagined. He falls for Freddie Burkholdt who is a girl with more than her fair share of secrets. Freddie is reeling from the recent death of her father in what she was told was a farming accident. It doesn't take long to determine that her father was murdered and Rain is determined to find out who killed him.
This is an urban fantasy story with werewolves and witches living secretly in New Wurzburg. There is currently conflict between the traditional power structure and the new power structure that Freddie's father advocated for before his death. Since many of the witches are in control of the town it was easy to engineer a coverup and it makes it hard to know who was involved in the murder because hiding things is just second nature for them.
This is also a romance as Rain falls for Freddie and feels that he finally has something to live for. I liked the relationship between Rain and Freddie and could completely understand why she kept trying to play down the romance because she wanted to keep him safe. I liked that Rain wouldn't be set aside and kept trying to convince Freddie that he knew his own mind and what he wanted.
I liked the magical system in the story and the world building. I liked some of the side characters like Grant and Petra who were witches of Rain and Freddie's generation.
Fans of romance and urban fantasy will enjoy this well told tale.
This was a great YA paranormal. I enjoyed the world of the Watchers and Weavers. I loved Rain, and his relationship with Freddi. The mystery was engaging. I really liked this book, and hope there is more of this world to come.
This book wasn't exactly what I wanted or thought it was going to be, but it wasn't bad either. I really wish this book had been dual POV between Rain and Freddie. I just connect more to female POV's when it's only one POV for the whole book. I thought the author's writing was really good, but my problem was sometimes I just wanted the story to get straight to the point vs overly elaborated sentences. I did like the paranormal side of things and found that well done. The physical chemistry between Rain and Freddie was really good, but they moved pretty fast without any actual real conversations. I feel like those who love paranormal romance will love this book, too.
Wishes do come true...I was given a free ARC of this novel from Entangled Publishing, LLC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!!
After the death of his mother, Rain Ryland is sent to live with his Aunt Ruby a police officer in the small town of New Wurzburg. The townspeople seem a bit strange to Rain and none more unnatural than the exotic Friederike Burkhart. Rain is warned to stay away from Freddie from the beginning but danger has never been something Rain runs away from. He has never really felt like he belonged anywhere until now. Strange deaths create suspicion among the already strained alliances between the town's factions.
This preternatural romance will hook you from page one and you won't want to put it down. I read this novel in a day I loved it so much. I love the "unnatural" characters, their history in the town, and their unique abilities. I can't say enough good things about his book.
Haven was a fast paced, fun read. I didn't know too much when I requested this, but was really excited to find out that it was about shifters and magic. The second half of the book was so hard to put down. There was even a murder mystery.
Rain grew up on the streets with his mom. They moved around from shelter to shelter and sometimes had no place to go. His mom made him feel like he was to blame for her terrible life. He had no other family and his father, a supposed one night stand, was dead. Imagine Rain's surprise when his mom died and he found out he had to go live with his aunt. Ruby was his mom's twin sister living in a small Texas town called New Wurzburg. Living with Ruby, Rain finds out about his past and finally finds love and affection.
Freddie is standoffish and really only talks to a few select people, mostly cousins. But there is something about her that grabs Rain's attention right away. There is a connection there that neither can deny. Rain finds Freddie scared and naked multiple times and can't figure out why there are so many weird things going on in the town. Freddie's dad died six months earlier. Everyone was told it was an accident, but Freddie knew he was murdered and was determined to figure out who did it and why.
I loved both Rain and Freddie. They were strong characters that didn't have the best lives. But they were loyal to anyone they cared about. Watching their relationship grow made me happy. I'm not always thrilled with a romance in a mystery type book, but this one was important to the story and worked so well.
Ruby was a suprise for me. Yet again, I found myself attached to an adult a book. She was still hurting over a loss from years before, but she still had a positive attitude and was so loving. It was obvious early on that she would do anything for Rain. Petra was another one that I ended up adoring. She was strange, but it was obvious that she was a sweet, misunderstood girl. Her shock at Rain wanting to be her friend was sad and touching.
The town history was pretty interesting. The Enchanted Rock had different stories, but they both revolved around magic. "It's said that on a full moon, the power of the earth reaches for the heavens at that one spot, infusing the surrounding area with magic strong enough to change man to beast."
Without getting into too much of the story, the book is about watchers and weavers. The watchers are werewolves/shifters and the weavers are witches. They both have their own roles to play, but there is a divide on sticking to tradition or trying to change and adapt to new rules. Freddie's dad was the alpha and she is supposed to be next in line. But there are others who don't believe a girl can be alpha and they do everything they can to make sure it doesn't happen.
There is plenty of action in the book, but I can't get into it much without ruining the book. There are murders and attacks, plus some backstabbing. I really enjoyed Haven and gave it 4 stars.
I received a copy of this book from Entangled Teen and Netgalley for review (and for a blog tour).
This is probably one of the best YA Paranormals I've read this year. It's told from the rare male's POV, Rain's, which really adds a whole different layer to this story. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out what's going on but this one kept me guessing right up till the ending. Make sure you have nothing else going on before starting this because you will be unable to put it aside. At 400 pages, I flew through it and it left me wanting yet more. I loved the fierce Freddie and she didn't put up with any crap from her cousins who always seemed to be around. Rain was another fascinating individual and for the first time in his life, he found a reason to be a better person. Freddie and Rain's interactions were funny yet sad. They both had had horrible childhoods and related very well. I guarantee you will be more than satisfied with this book and hope to see more of this series soon from Lindsey.
Juicy enough to sink my teeth into it!
Haven is a mystery suspense novel which ideally you don't want to find out too much about it before you read it. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He and his mother have fluttered from place to place his whole life. Rain has learned to be tough to protect himself, and streetwise to survive. The world is hard and the dice rolls haven't been in his favour. His mother, unfortunately, has met a tragic end and Rain isn't old enough to be left to his own devices. He never knew his mothers past, but he is about to find a place to call his own.
New Wurzburg is a place filled with Magic and mystery. If you don't want to see then you can just close your eyes. Rain sees Freddie and he can't look away. There is something about her that he is drawn to, like a moth to a flame. To the outside world, she seems to be a troublemaker with an attitude. Take a closer look and she is so much more. She may not be beautiful like the prom queen, but her unusual looks are breathtaking. Rain has known a harsh life, and he wants to help Freddie even if she is reluctant.
Rain moves in with his aunt and starts a new school. Everything is looking up for his future, but destiny wants to deal her own cards. Rain is about to get sucked into Freddie's world and it's hard to look away.
5 stars out of 5. I couldn't put this book down. If you like the look of this story I would recommend you just read it, and don't look too closely into what it's about. The ride will suck you in and I loved every minute of it.
This book is intended for the 16 plus audience (U.K.) as it has adult content.
*I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. My blog tour date is the 24th November where I will be interviewing the lovely author. Don't worry I'm not planning any spoilers!*
This one is a read you need to pay attention to closely. There are many characters that are involved and you never really know who is on which side until the end. Interesting take with a young female alpha getting ready to take her place in the pack. Freddie is strong but has a confidence problem after her dad is murdered. Rain is a complicated person and Freddie is intrigued by him. He helps her become stronger and solve the mystery of her pack. I received a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
"Haven" was a really fantastic YA fantasy that follows Rain (Aaron Ryland) from right around the time his mother dies. Rain and his mother have lived on the streets of Houston for a long time, and he has grown up believing that it is all his fault. When his mother overdoses, he is scared for his future. A judge sends him to live with his aunt out in the middle of nowhere- an aunt he didn't even know existed. She is so unlike his mother that it's hard to believe they are twins. Rain slowly untangles the mystery of his past and family as well as the secrets the town is desperate to keep hidden.
To add to the intrigue, Rain finds himself attracted to Freddie, a beautiful young woman who seems to be trouble and is hiding a bunch of secrets of her own. As the mysteries heat up, so does their attraction. Between the romance and the mysteries, this book was impossible to put down! The writing flows so beautifully, and the pace is really perfect. Rain gets to piece together what he knows (not only about the secret lives of the townspeople but also about some recent murders) and learns tidbits from others in town that really keep the pace intense and steady throughout.
Overall, it was a really great story. I liked Rain a lot as a main character- although he had a bit of a rough side, he's really just a very lonely and isolated boy and experiences a lot of growth during the story. Although the story is wrapped up by the end of the book, I would love to see more books with these characters. There were a few side characters that I wish we could have learned even more about (like Petra- she was awesome!), and I will keep my fingers crossed that we can spend more time in this world and with other characters in future books. I don't want to say too much about what the fantasy elements are as they are slowly described in the book (and would be spoilery), but it has so much potential for a really fantastic series! I highly recommend this to all YA fantasy lovers!
Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
This book was kind of a hard book to rate because it had a lot of positives that I really enjoyed and a lot of negatives that got in the way of me fully enjoying this book. I really did want to love this because it had a super cool premise that I thought was incredibly interesting.
I think one of the reasons I didn't love this book was how fast paced it was. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy fast paced novels. Sometimes, I just want to get into the thick of things. But from the get go, this book was just go go go. I barely had time to catch a break and just breathe. It some parts, the fast paced-ness served it well, while at other parts it wasn't needed and things needed to be slower.
Another thing that kind of bothered me was the information overload. I love information overload. I love learning about the world and what makes it tick. But man, every secondary character had so much information about everything and gave almost entirely monologues about what they knew. It just got to be a bit much.
But the main characters, Freddie and Rain, were the shining lights in this book. Rain was incredible. He had a hard life but he didn't let that affect him. His heart was so full of good and he took to love and acceptance so well. Too many times, I have read books where the MC took forever to accept help and love from others and even then, there was a lot of self sabotage. With Rain, he admitted he had issues accepting love but he worked on it. I really enjoyed him as a character and being in his head. Plus, I loved that he tried to accept everyone. Even people that were considered "weird" by standards of the town.
Freddie was a fantastic strong female. I loved that she didn't let anybody bring her down. When Rain, who I really loved, got all macho man, she quickly let him know he better knock that crap off. She didn't let her cousins run her over either and she was constantly fighting, even when she was in pain. She is an incredibly strong person and I respect her so much for it.
Overall, I liked this book. The fast paced action brought it down for me but the world was very cool. I must note, however, that this is an upper YA book. There is a lot of swearing and some sexual tension scenes that might be a little much to someone younger. But this is a good book for someone interested in the YA paranormal genre and constant fast paced action.
"Never had he been kissed like that--like the world revolved around that moment. And he wanted more. He wanted everything."
"We all hide a beast inside us. The only difference is what form it takes when freed."
Haven is a fast paced and spellbinding read. It is a refreshing young adult paranormal novel that will keep you on your toes. From mystery to intrigue and a spellbinding plot, you won't be able to put this book down.
From the moment I picked up Haven, I was utterly captivated. This story was so fresh, so unique. The world building and plot are so creative. The characters had mystery and intrigue to them. I had so many questions throughout the story. I loved trying to figure everything out and really enjoyed seeing how the story came together.
One of the things I enjoyed most about Haven was how story focused it was. Yes, there was some romance, but the romance wasn't the main focus. I feel like we got a really good sense of the characters, their story and the whole outcome.
Haven was a terrific read, from beginning to end. It was filled with action, suspense, mystery, intrigue and of course romance. The world building is amazing and the writing will leave you spellbound. If you're looking for a fresh YA paranormal romance, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.
