This one was just not for me. It started off okay but then got so predictable. And the characters! How could these people be so stupid?

This is an odd one which will no doubt engender divergent opinions, especially about Maggie. Told in multiple voices, it's the story of Maggie, a young woman who, let's be honest, isn't very smart or savvy. Herron has been quite good with his Spook Street novels but this has a different tone, I think, although the writing remains crisp and clear. How Maggie gets roped into her situation is arguably the most realistic part of this but it's a good quick read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It would make a good movie.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book - it's short, elegant, and delightfully suspenseful. I think some folks might feel as though the writing deliberately withholds information, which is true, but the revelations this technique provides are more worthwhile for it. There are some great turns of phrase and very startling insights into the mind of a man veering towards men's rights activism. It's sort of a tough book to review as I don't want to give anything away. It certainly kept me guessing.

This is a very hard book to review without giving spoilers - it's difficult to even come up with comp titles/authors that don't give anything away. The twist is bound to irritate some readers who were expecting a different book, but this is a lightening fast read, perfect for thriller fans.

It was amazing! It kept me on my toes. There are 3 different character perspectives: Maggie, Meredith, and Dikon. I absolutely hated Harvey Wells/Dikon Broom, in a good way. The author created the perfect maniac. Dikon blames women for his own faults. He ends up kidnapping Maggie and brainwashing her into believing that the society she knew has collapsed. She lives the next 2 years in his basement thinking he has brought her to a safe house. Around this time Maggie’s sister, Meredith, has begun to look for her. Surprise, surprise she also makes contact with Dikon. I loved the thrill of seeing how the characters connected all the dots.
