The Heiress's Deception is the fourth and final book of Christi Caldwell's Sinful Brides series - and it is ends the series on a wonderful note.
It has all the hallmarks of a fantastic romance; strong, brooding hero who does the right thing even when it is difficult. The strong willed independent heroine who fights for what she believes in regardless of the cost to herself.
In this story, Eve Pruitt is the daughter of a duke, who has ended up becoming a book keeper in a gaming hell. Why? Because her dangerous, wastrel brother is trying to marry her off so he can claim her fortunate. And he will do anything to ensure it, even allowing his drunk friend to try and take liberties with her. In order to escape him she takes employment and refuge in the Hell and Sin club. What she didn't anticipate was the current owner Calum...a childhood friend who she believes she betrayed when she was 9 and he 14. In order to stay safe she allows Calum to believe she is someone he has never met before.
Of course, danger and adventure crop up forcing the two into each other's world. I enjoyed the gradual development of their relationship and learning the backstory of what drove them to their current situation. Eve is a smart, kindhearted woman trying to right a wrong from the past while staying safe from her brother. Calum is an imposing figure who hides a tender, caring heart. Their growth together was exciting to read and I found myself staying up late in the night to see where their story went.
I enjoy Christi Caldwell's books because they are always so well written. Yes, there is romance but more importantly there is always character development and growth and I greatly enjoy reading that.
I received an e-copy via Netgalley from Montlake Romance. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It seems I have been waiting an eternity for Calum's story in The Sinful Brides Series. I devoured this book in less than a day. The fourth book in the series is just as wonderful as the first three.
Calum is the proprietor of a gaming hell whose only interest is taking care of his family by making his club the best in London. He needs a bookkeeper. When a woman shows up five days late for an interview he is about to kick her out but he desperately needs a bookkeeper, he decides to give her a chance. He does not recognize her, but they knew each other when he was a pickpocket on the streets of St. Giles and she was a Duke's daughter who used to feed him and talked to him like he was someone. She also was almost the death of him.
Lady Eve Pruitt is in mind-numbing terror fleeing from her evil brother who will do anything to get her dowry of 20,000 pounds. He has even encouraged one of his cronies to rape her so she would have to marry the scoundrel and split the dowry with him. She becomes the bookkeeper at The Hell and Sin Club until she reaches her majority in three months time and donates her dowry to the foundling hospital where she volunteers. She knows if she gives up her dowry her brother will leave her alone. Only she doesn't expect to meet her childhood friend who was supposed to be dead. Her brother told her that he was dead and it was all her fault.
This is the story of two vastly different people from opposite backgrounds who find common ground in the pain and horror that they each experienced. Christi writes a tale of horrendous betrayal, heartbreaking emotional pain and the realization that it doesn't matter where you come from. love doesn't discriminate, and redemption and forgiveness can bring a happily ever after. I absolutely loved this book and am not ashamed to admit I cried while reading this book. Christi is an amazing talent and we can only hope that she will keep writing wonderful stories for us to devour.
Rated 4.5!
Lady Eve Pruitt is in trouble. Her brother is trying to marry her off to obtain part of her inheritance. When his friend tries to take advantage of Eve, she flees. With the help of a friend, Eve disguises her identity and takes a job where her brother is least likely to find her, a gaming hell. Eve never would have dreamed she'd run into someone from her past there.
Calum is the childhood friend Eve has always kept a special place in her heart for. She believed him to be dead due to a youthful error on her part, but is relieved to discover Calum survived. Although Eve knows she shouldn't take the position working under Calum, she cannot resist. What will happen when Calum learns who she really is and the trouble she is in?
A big thank you to author Christi Caldwell for this super amazing novel. I instantly fell in love with Calum. Eve has her work cut out for her, but Calum is so worth it. They are truly soulmates. Eve and Calum's have such a strong unbreakable bond between them even as children. They both have suffered and overcome it to become the people they are today. Eve and Calum's story is simply heart-rending. I am so glad they were able to find one another once again. THE HEIRESS'S DECEPTION is keeper shelf material!
Thanks to Montlake Romance and NetGalley for a copy of this book. An excellent read as always by Christie Caldwell. A good regency romance.
Lady Eve Pruitt must go into hiding when her horrible brother aims to steal her fortune from her using any means necessary. She winds up in the He'll and Sin club and there finds a boy from her childhood that she thought was dead due to a mistake made on her part. She may recognize Calum but he has no idea who she is. Calum is taken by her quick wit and sharp mind and slowly begins to trust his bookkeeper. Eve knows with his hate for the Ton and the harm that would come to his friends and his club, Calum would never forgive her deception, When the truth comes to light will the shattered trust ever allow them to have a future?
I liked this installment of The Sinful Brides series. I would have liked a bit more details of what Calum endured in Newgate. There was a slow build up to the main story and I felt that aspect was missing. Other than that, I enjoyed the romance, appreciated the epilogue and look forward to the other characters stories (possible that of Eve' s brother, Kit?).
Calum Dabney escaped Saint Giles, Newgate and cheated death.
He and a cobbled together family of orphans started and successfully run a gambling hell now.
When she was a child, Lady Eve Pruitt's nasty brother is the one who severely injured her only friend, Calum, and sent him to Newgate, Eve believed him dead, but his 'brothers' rescued him and helped him heal.
Degenerate Gerald sends Eve on the run after setting her up to be raped in order to gain control of her money after wasting his own.
Eve ends up at Calum's hell for help and is so shocked by the fact, he is still alive, she keeps quiet about who she is until she must confess. Meanwhile the pair grow very close.
Sweet romantic historical with bits of heat,
I requested and received a NetGalley ARC.
Lady Eve Pruitt has never forgotten her only childhood friend, the young pickpocket Calum, who she feared had been condemned to the gallows after she lead her brother Gerald to help her save Calum’s life after he was stabbed, but instead Gerald sent him to Newgate Prison.
Lady Eve carries the weight and responsibilities of the dukedom's finances on her shoulders especially since her father died. Her profligate brother has bankrupted the duchy and her other brother has disappeared. He is out to get her inheritance and is determined to have it by any means necessary. Even sending a friend to rape her and marry her to get his hands on her inheritance. She decides to hide for three month before she can officially get her inheritance. Eve takes a job at a gamble den of sins and realizes she’s working for her long lost friend Calum whom she though was dead. She decides to hide in his scandalous gaming hell posing as a mousy, malodorous bookkeeper and prays he doesn’t recognize her. They both come to know each other, for Eve its bittersweet to see her one friend and not be able to tell him who she is in fear he’ll kick her out into the cold and back into gambler Gerald’s hands. Loved this story of two people from different worlds, one a guttersnipe who has raised himself up out of the gutters of London and the other a Duke’s daughter who has longed for and has felt guilty for betraying her one and only friend all those years ago.
This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
3.75 STARS
Christi Caldwell is one of my favorite historical romance authors. Her books are practically a must read. This book is no different. Although, I must say I was disappointed that there was no follow through on what happened with Gerald, Lena's brother. What happened with him after Calum decides to marry her? Nothing is really said.
The struggles and guilt the characters carry feels real and palpable. I love that Calum did not want revenge against Eve. It seems a lot of books will go this route and it was refreshing to read something new. The writing was beautiful as you can see from my favorite quote in the book:
“Do not presume to tell me what I ever dreamed of, Eve, for if you indeed knew that, you’d know that you were the only dream I’ve ever had.”
I definetly would recommend this book. It has all the feels and the writing is superb. Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Calum Dabney and Lady Eve Pruitt first met over seventeen years ago when they were both children, albeit from different stations in life. Now Eve is in danger from her brother, George and has unknowingly found her way into Calum’s life. Eve has disguised herself and become the bookkeeper of a gambling hell. Eve and Calum felt the attraction between them but what would happen when Calum discovered who Eve really was? How could she escape from her brother, the powerful Duke of Bedford? This was an enthralling read. I’ve read a good number of Christi Caldwell’s books and never been disappointed. I received a copy from Netgalley and have voluntarily reviewed it.
I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley. The story of Calum and Eve go back 17 years to their first meeting and one year later Calum’s arrest and being thrown into Newgate. Years pass and Eve needs to escape her brother’s plans to get him hands on her dowry and runs into Calum again. She recognizes him as her childhood friend and old feelings surface along with the realization he is alive. Their is a lot of action in the book that involves danger and deception. This book is worth your time to read as it is well written and holds your attention.
The Heiress's Deception by Christi Caldwell is an outstanding read. Ms. Caldwell has given us another well-written, smooth read. Calum and Eve were childhood friends, he was a pickpocket, she was the daughter of a duke. Calum is stabbed when trying to pick Eve's brother's pocket and she finds him in the stable. Not knowing it was her brother who stabbed him, she asks his help for her friend. Her brother has Calum hauled off to hang. Years later Eve is trying to escape her brother and seeks a job at Calum's gaming hell not knowing he's one of the owners. Their story is packed with drama, humor, action and spice. The characters in this book are amazing and made this book a joy to read. I loved every page of this story. The Heiress's Deception is book 4 of the Sinful Brides Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
At first I thought the story was a little slow but as I kept reading I realized it was a great close to this series. Calum was the one I always admired as I felt he kept the brothers together, however when it comes time for him to fall in love you can see his soft spot.
I thought this was a great story and was happy to see where the story went.
** I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
I have read a few books by Christ Caldwell but all belonged to the Duke series. This was the first book in this series I had read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well developed and the storyline moved constantly. What i also liked about this book was that the characters were considered ordinary looking. She wasn't outstandingly beautiful and he just above average in height and looks. That just seems more realistic. I look forward to going back and reading the first 3 books in this series.
The Heiress's Deception is book 4 and the final book in the series. Christi Caldwell is one of my favorite story tellers. She has done a wonderful job of bringing two people together and letting them have their happily ever after. The book stands on it's own so you don't have to read the other three books before reading this one.
Prior to getting the ARC, I did purchase the book from Amazon.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💋💋
A book patiently awaited by all fans of the Sinful Brides Series .
Calum Dabney part owner of the Hell And Sin Club , finally get his HEO .
Eve Pruitt, has two brothers , one working for the crown , and he’s no longer around . Then she has The Duke her eldest brother , but he’s a real 🤬🤬.
She runs from home escaping the Duke and finds tentative peace in Calum’s club working as his bookkeeper, but then she realises he’s her friend from many years ago , one she thought dead .
Calum doesn’t recognise Eve , it’s been 17 years after all, but when the Duke comes calling who will save Eve ?
Who will save the Hell and Sin Club ?
And will Adair , Calum’s Brother ever realise what it’s like to love someone himself ?
Christi has excelled again with this book , can’t wait for Adair’s story !
Loved it! A great addition to a lovely series!
The way the protagonists' relationship is introduced (when they were kids) is absolutely charming. And I adore a love story that blooms between childhood friends.
Eve is sooo sweet and Calum is the type of hero I'm always looking for, a kind man; which is a refreshing difference from all the other gambling hell heroes we have seen before - who I love as well, to be fair. Derek Craven is still my biggest crush ever.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the fourth instalment of Ms Caldwell's Sinful Brides series. I have not read the others in this series and this can be read as a standalone. Lady Eve Pruitt was a lonely child whose only friend was a street urchin, Calum. One fateful night, Calum is injured stealing from a gentleman. Eve seeking to help him runs to her brother, unfortunately, he is the gentleman Calum robbed and he turns him over to the authorities to be hung.
Seventeen years later, Eve must go into hiding to escape her brother's nefarious plans. She seeks refuge in a gambling hell, disguised as a bookkeeper.Eve is unaware that this particular Hell belongs to Calum, her childhood friend whom she thought dead.
Eve was shocked to see Calum alive after all these years, but she kept her identity hidden, scared that he would turn her away in anger after she caused his near death at the hands of her brother.
If I was to describe this book in one word it would be, forgettable. There was nothing particularly wrong with the book, it just was not memorable. I wasn't gripped by the story or characters.
I just love this series and can't say enough good things about it. I really enjoyed Eve and Calum's story. That their loved started when they were young and only grew just makes me swoon! The tension between them was perfect as was their chemistry. My only complaint about this book is that the ending seemed a little rushed. Did anything happen to Gerald? It would have been nice to see him get his. Other than that I loved this story and I can't wait to see what Caldwell puts out next!
ARC provided by NetGalley.
What I really liked about this book is the tender relationship between Eve and Calum that doesn't fade even when they dealing with lots of external pressures and issues. I felt bad for Eve since her brother is a terrible person, and for Calum because he is so alone in the world until he meets his found family, but it allows them to understand each other better. I enjoyed this book immensely.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Historical Romance. Last of the series. Haven’t read any of the others in the series. But I take it it’s about the other characters that are married and mentioned in this series.
This story is about 2 characters that are from Different parts of live in Historical England. Different parts of London that the upper ton woman didn’t associate with the people that were poor had to steal just to live . In this story it shows that you shouldn’t give up hope even in the darkest of times.
The hero Calum grew up in the direst part of London where there is Dens of gambling; women selling them self’s and children stealing food and money just to live.
Little Lena as Calum calls her is a daughter of a duke . Both characters develop a strong bond . They both learn from books and Calum helps Lena from being lonely. He’s her only friend. Something Hapsburg’s in the story that crushes that bond . Lena trusted her brother the marquee ( wasn’t duke at the time since their father was alive ). But her brother betrayed her and took Calum to Newgate . Calum believes that the little Duchess betrayed him
Yrs late Lena is the only one of the family that has any money (in a trust ) from their father . Her brother (the duke now ) needs it to pay off his loans and to keep his mistresses. The duke (her brother) evens okays his best friend to despoiling Lena. Her other brother is away for many years (He works for Home Office ) at the time they were the spy part of the government.
She needs to get away , hide for 3 months till Lena reaches of age .
Lena does go to work . Grab it and see where she works and does she hide
There is only one part of this story that didn’t sit well with me ; it had me wondering and if it wasn’t for that it would be a 5 star book .
When her brother was working for home office comes back ( nowhere in the book did it say where he was , nothing. ) and saves her out of the blue
