Paramnesia was honestly such a pleasure to read! I am actually surprised by how much I liked it. At first I was a bit hesitant because I was worried this would tread “unreliable narrator” territory, which I am so over. But, I really ended up loving this book. And the more I thought about it while writing this review, I decided to bump it up from 3.5 to 4 stars. It was such a treat to read especially with Halloween fast approaching and I loved the characters so much.
Set in Guelph, Ontario, Paramnesia follows Nora and her boyfriend, Andrew. After being attacked on prom night by a supernatural creature, Nora gains the ability to see and speak to the dead. From here Nora faces the challenge of how to cope with survivor’s guilt while trying to acclimate to her new “abilities.” Oh, and that creature that attacked her is still trying to kill her.
I’ll admit, the insta-love was a bit much in the beginning, but it doesn’t totally dominate the book, and it was necessary to move the story forward. The love between Nora and Andrew sets the story in motion, and while it was a bit cheesy at times, I found it endearing. Also their quirky dynamic makes me laugh (and I am a 33-year old grouch. Ha!)
My favorite thing about this book was the Deadish Society. The Deadish Society is the group of ghosts that Nora befriends, and oh my gosh, they are so precious I will protect them at all costs. They are so silly, lovable, loyal, and… such smart asses! I honestly loved all the witty banter and humor throughout this entire book. It really set such a happy tone in a book with very serious subject matter about death and coping with loss.
As a lover of horror and paranormal legends, I also loved how Brian Wilkinson built this paranormal world. There are certain chapters dedicated to the Revenant’s backstory, which I appreciated and was glad this aspect of world building wasn’t just glossed over. While the Revenant isn’t my favorite villain, I still liked how this evil thing was woven into the mortal world.
And the story doesn’t just follow Nora’s journey with the undead, but also her relationships with the living. There are some heavy topics such as loss of a child, loss of a partner, learning when/how to move on, and acceptance of death. But there’s also so much hope and positivity as Nora discovers that she does not have to fight her battles alone.
I truly think this book is perfect for Halloween. It has several spooky elements while still being lighthearted and fun. I was laughing at so many parts and I fell in love with so many characters. I especially loved Peepers (be still my heart), Scarlett, and Rocco!
I didn’t realize this was going to have sequel until I got to the end, but I wasn’t even mad. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and I am looking forward to picking up the next installment!
Love it! It's a page turner. I would definitely recommend this to my friends. This is a wonderfully sweet and story. The author perfectly captured the best of life that I will most remember.. So overall, I give this book 4 stars.

This would be more of a 2.5 star rating.
On the one hand I quite liked the story and the premise sounded very promising but I did have a few problems with the storyline.
I really quickly got a mean girls vibe with Nora and her 'best friend' Vee. To me...Vee was never a good friend to Nora. She was just plain mean and I'm tired of stories where friendships are depicted like that. We don't need any more books with toxic friendships.
I also hated the insta-love in this book. I get that it was necessary but I think it couldve started of differently. Maybe with Nora and Andrew already being in a relationship instead of making them fall in love within seconds.
Additionally to that were the characters qute shallow. I didnt feel like they were properly fleshed out and they just stayed the same the whole time which I also didnt enjoy very much.
Furthermore this story was super predictable. Nothing surprised me because I have seen it all in other books already and everything was in the same pattern as in other typical YA books.
Now, I loved the sound of Paramnesia and as soon as I read the blurb, I knew I wanted to read it. However, I must say that it fell a little short for me. The relationship between Nora and Andrew just did not seem realistic. The speed at which their relationship moved both before and after the accident just came across as hollow teenage lust to me rather than the pure love it seems to be sold at.
Also - I'm sorry to say - I just did not like Nora. I found her boring, repetitive and selfish. The way she treats and speaks to other characters makes her come across as a 13-old-child immature child rather than a 17-year-old on the cusp of adulthood. She does get marginally better as the novel progresses, but (1) not enough to redeem herself, and (2) not with enough depth or realism for me to be invested to believe it as a reader. Less 'rite of passage' and more 'child being told off'.
That being said, Paramnesia has a lot of good qualities too. I love the idea of the book and I think the idea is solid. Peepers as a secondary character is fabulous as is Graves and I'm sorry that we did not see more of him. In fact most of the Deadish Society gives the book some much needed pace and colour.
I also really like how it ended. Closed enough to feel happy that book one was over and no cliff-hanger. However, there are enough lose ends to keep you intrigued as to what is going to happen next. Will I read the rest of the series? To be honest, no I don't think so. I prefer standalone books these days, so a series has to REALLY grip me for me to be committed to continue. That being said, there are a few things that I would love to know how they are resolved, so it's a definite maybe.
Overall, I just found Paramnesia a little 'meh'. Nothing particularly bad about it, but nothing to make it stand out either. However, it is a good solid quick read. So, if you enjoy this genre, it could be a good holiday filler for you.
The description drew me in immediately. The premise made it sound like an interesting read, and the book definitely held up to that. I found that the story very engaging and I couldn't put it down! I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this one. A fun quick read!
Very mixed feelings about this book. There were parts that amazed me, but there were also parts that fell short. How Andrew reacted after being hit by a car didn't work for me - there's no way you'd be that okay about it. Then the fact he was so obsessed with Nora the second he met her was bordering creepy. They started dating and fell for each other way too fast and I wish he wouldn't say 'Nora Angel' so often. It's okay hearing it a few times, but not every single time he says her name. Then considering how much they made out to like each other, their eyes seemed to stray a bit too quickly - I would have maybe waited for book two for that. BUT I loved the idea of the story, a lot of great characters. I do have a very big soft spot for Peepers and the moment where Andrew gifted him with something (don't want to spoil it) was so beautiful. Will I read the rest of the series? Probably. I guess my annoyances were more towards the beginning of the book, so don't see why not!
I thought Paramnesia was an okay read. It wasn’t anything special nor was it terrible. It was one of those in-between books you feel meh about. I will probably read other books in the series to see how things develop. I love the cover and this drew me to the book. The world building is good especially establishing the Deadish Society. The book has a lot of humour which balances nicely with some of the darker moments. I did not buy the instant love between Nora and Andrew. This wasn’t believable at all, sort of nauseating and caused the credibility of the book to go down a notch. I also had an issue with the misogynistic tone the book had at times. Nora’s physical appearance is constantly compared to her best friend Vee and she comes up short every time. Also, Nora’s brother describes a date as Big Boobs Casey? Uh, no.
The synopsis for this book sounds amazing. The idea of being able to communicate with the dead, specifically the mc's boyfriend appealed to me. As did, the Revenant in all it's violent supernatural goodness. In practice though, this book was a let down. To be clear, the end of this book might be fantastic. My Kindle tells me that I only made it 12% in before DNFing this novel. At this point in the novel, Nora and her friend Vee are getting ready to attend prom. Up to this point the entire store has been told to me.
"After getting their hair and nails done, the girls went back to Nora's to get ready."
"She had been having lunch with Veronica that day..."
"At school, Nora and Andrew quickly became the new :"it" couple."
"Every night before she went to bed, she and Andrew would text each other sweet nothings ..."
"They ate and talked for what seemed like an eternity."
One or two instances of this kind of writing is acceptable, but the first 12% of this book reads this way.
It's frustrating that I won't see how the rest of the story plays out. The lazy writing keeps me several layers away from the characters. The only glimpses I have into who they might be come from snippets of dialogue here and there which amount to little more than pleasantries. Who are these characters? What do they want? What are they afraid of? I have no idea and at this stage I should. The immediate rush of the first few pages cannot carry a reader through until the 25% mark where we will inevitably come full circle to the revenant attacking them on prom night. Beyond that I don't really know what would happen, but I'm no invested enough to slog through and find out. Perhaps further editing helps this story along, but at this point it feels more like a bullet point list of events about hollow people.
I won't be posting a review of this to any social media as my current views are unfavorable and at this stage I'm still hopeful that significant edits will be made before it's release in September.
I had higher hopes for this book given the cool description. But it was a bit of a let-down and was kind of silly. The writing was funny and the story wasn't well developed. If you like generic stories about protagonists seeing and talking to ghosts, you might enjoy this one.

While other readers might seem to enjoy this book, and honestly, I would really love to like this book too, but there are just a lot of downfall from this book that I’m torn between finishing it or not.
First,I hate the instant love between Andrew and Nora. And to make it worst, Andrew died after a few chapters. Yeah, I could say that am more of a person who wants the characters to develop their feelings in a more slow but full of romantic excitement. This one just got me feeling “meh” after Nora and Andrew decided to be a thing.
Second. The Writing Style. I think I don’t have to narrate why. But there are moments when the narration of the story just feels dull and lifeless. It felt like everything should be explained, just for the reader to follow the author’s way of thinking about the story.
Third.I. The Characters. Sorry to say, but the characters doesn’t give any huge impact on me. I felt so disconnected to its character I don’t want to know anything about them and just finish the book just to get over with it.
Overall, this book has an interesting concept. The execution and the flow of the story just did not meet the teaser it gave to its readers.
Just finished reading this book and it was well worth the wait! Paramnesia was well-written, entertaining and down right scary at times. I liked the storyline about ghosts and the paranormal and how real the author made it all seem and the characters were all likeable. Whether they were dead or alive, they kept the plot ticking along and made enjoyable reading. The chapters were reasonably short which I enjoy as it helps the story to flow a lot quicker and the style of the story was gritty and hard paced.
A good read for 2018!
3.5 stars!
This was quite an interesting book and I really did enjoy it, despite the 3 (three) star rating. It had its negatives but honestly, this was pretty entertaining read. I can't wait to read the next book! Hopefully the next book will have a beautiful cover to match this one. If I'm being honest, I requested this book purely for the cover.
One of the negatives about this book was the way it was written. It was written beautifully, almost poetic in a sense. But after a while, it got to be a bit much. It also affected the way the characters talked. The teenager conversations felt stilted and unrealistic at times. It took away from the plot and there were times where I wasn't completely sure what was really going on because the writing made me a little confused.
I loved Nora. Despite the writing, I could tell she acted like a teenager and I loved that. She was sassy and quick as a whip. I would have loved to be her friend even though she fell in love with a guy a little too quickly for my taste (and this is coming from someone that adores instalove). And speaking of friends, her and Veronica were serious friendship goals. Vee was a constant support to Nora and I loved that this book showed imprect friendships. There were times Nora snapped at Vee and vice versa but they always talked it out and apologized to each other. Let's get more of that, yeah?
The concept was very cool. I have never heard of a Revenant (or maybe I have. The episodes of Supernatural all start to run together after a while). This book wasn't info dumpy at all. Information was given when relevant and needed to progress the plot.
Speaking of Supernatural, the amount of references sprinkled in this book was wild and my nerd heart soared! From Supernatural to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it was a nerd's paradise of fantastic references. If that kind of stuff bothers you, then this book might not be for you, because there is a lot references. They also contributed to the plot, they weren't just there for the sake of being there.
Overall, this was a good start to what I'm sure will be a good series. I was sucked in purely by the cover and the title. Despite my average rating, I thought this book was pretty good. If the supernatural interests you, this book will be right up your alley.
Awesome read. Well written, with a great plot and characters. I was engrossed from start to finish. Although there were some slow spots. This book has elements of suspense, mystery, humour, and action. Nora's story is quite tragic but hopeful. She loses her boyfriend that she loves very much, but winds up with the ability to see and talk to the dead. Unfortunately the dead never rests, and at first she thinks she is going crazy. With a bit of help she realizes there is nothing wrong with her brain......she is seeing and hearing dead people. How will she handle her gifts, and the fact that ghosts exist? Overall a great read and I can't wait to read the next book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Netgalley.
This book was offered to me for review by the publisher. The description intrigued me, It’s not my normal type of book but I decided to give it a try, To me, it started off a bit slow. It seemed to pick up and catch my interest and then at times it would slow down again. Overall, it was a decent book.
Paramnesia is a real word. The definition is “A distortion of memory in which fact and fantasy are confused.”
I found Paramnesia: The Deadish Chronicles on NetGalley. Since Blogging for Books will be closing soon, it was time to find another place that had books available for review. So far it’s been a positive experience, except that I can never remember my password.
One day Nora is a normal high school student with good family and friends. She has just recently met Andrew, who is the perfect boyfriend. They have a perfect prom night until after the dance is over.
There’s a tragic event that changes Nora’s life forever. No one believes her story about the situation, which includes a soul sucker called the Revenant. I envision the Revenant as a creature that looks like the alien from Alien.
Her psychiatrist believes that she has paramnesia. If only it were that simple.
I enjoyed reading this book for the most part. It made me wish that I could do prom over except for the whole soul sucker situation. I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars.
You can find the author, Brian Wilkinson on Twitter and most places on the Internet.
I loved this unique take on love stories and what happens to us when we die. For the first, we watch a couple in love, separated by death, slowly realize they'd have to let each other go, and grow to accept and embrace it. The relationship wasn't well established so I didn't feel the tug at the heart-strings that you'd expect but I really enjoyed watching the main character grow out of it. For the second, I really enjoyed the premise behind the "deadish" and the execution was actually done pretty well. I honestly will be following this series from here. Because of of few elements, the discussion of sex for one, I would definitely say this is a young adult novel that's actually pretty safe for the younger teens but not a children's book.
I would like to thank the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I didnt enjoy this at all. I found the style clunky and boring and i actually had to give up reading it.
A fun quick read!
I found that the story very engaging and I couldn't put it down! It's well-written and has very interesting characters, I loved author's writing style; unique and a little quirky.
Nora's story is quite tragic but at the same time it is also full of hope. Although, she loses her boyfriend, whom she loves immensely, however she also gains the ability to see, as well as, talk to the dead. And the dead never rests, unfortunately. At first she thinks she is going crazy. With little help she soon realizes that things are exactly as they seem to be and there is nothing wrong with her brain.
Overall this book was amazing!! If you like YA Paranormal, and are looking for fun, easy read, you will probably enjoy this book.
An interesting premise. After an attack that injures her and kills her boyfriend, Nora finds herself able to see and talk to spirits. But the creature that attacked her is bound to see her dead. With the help of her new friends, she will risk her life to survive and protect her friends and family. Nora is a strong character and the plot flows well.
