It starts off a little odd and hard to get into, but by the middle I was really enjoying it. Sometimes the characters, especially the main one, were a drag until you remember he is like 5 years old. I would enjoy seeing a follow up after the ending (which I won't spoil).

As a teacher, this book looked like a great book for my students from the start. After all, kids love sci-fi, regardless of their gender. However, I ended up actually really enjoying it myself. It has a refined sort of feel to it, but not too complex for kids. Overall a great book for any age.
