Supah Cooollll!!!
but what a cliff hanger in the end!!!!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review The Hidden Legacy by Christine Rees.
Unfortunately, I was unable to finish reading this book as I could not connect with it at this time. I do enjoy Christine Rees's writing style but unfortunately it was a DNF at 42%
I had high expectations for this story. The premise of the book seemed alluring at first until the story began to unfold. Firstly, Faye is considered nefarious just because she skipped classes. These days, that does not make you incredible. Secondly, the story began to show very obvious continuity issues. Thirdly, the love triangle was not needed in this story. YA novels need to retire this trope immediately. It has gotten stale after haunting the genre for over ten years.
If this story didn't have these problems, this would have been a perfect beginning to a series. Hopefully the second book proved to be better than the first story.
Sorry but this book is extremely predictable for my taste. It’s not full of too many flaws, the story goes very fast paced, it’s fun and thrilling but the characters are ridiculous sometimes, acting like wise and grown up adults and then contradicting themselves like baby children. So not for me because of the too many cliches and tropes, that say some people will love this kind of teenage mystery romance with so many fantasy elements because it’s fun and very enjoyable.
My inner 16-year-old self loved this book. It was fast paced and entertaining. I flew through it like I used to fly through the Vampire Diaries and the Secret Circle series. My 25 year-old self however, thought this book was too full of high school drama and kids getting themselves into situations they are too young for. No, there was nothing that happened that needed over a PG-13 rating, but still. 16-year-old kids getting themselves into these intense deadly situations just seems unreasonable. The good news is, I think this book is intended for a middle-to-high school aged audience and when I was that age, I would have eaten this one up.
Each character was likable to a certain extent, there was the typical high-school clique members (new girl, jock, smart one, fashionista, bad boy, etc.) with typical high school drama happening every five seconds. The plot was predictable but had some unique aspects and overall was enjoyable. I pretty much knew how everything was going to go down, but I was still excited to read and there were a few surprises at the end that I appreciated.
I was definitely in the mood for a fun and easy YA read so I did enjoy The Hidden Legacy. Do I think it is quality literature? No. But am I going to take a break from reality and read the second book in the series for fun? Probably.
