What a enjoyable read! Well written storyline that’s full of mystery, suspense, danger and a second chance love story. Wonderful characters. Callum is swoon worthy. Yum! Becca is smart and strong. Mags is the cutest. Good villains too. Ending was a little abrupt. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC thanks to NetGalley.
After ten years Callum has finally returned home. Things have changed and his revenge towards his enemies has grown. He will stop at nothing to take what he wants since they conspired against his family. Rekindling his love with his childhood friend Rebecca he will make up all the time he has lost. A never ending ride of lost, love, and betrayal. Loved it!
This is a roller coaster of a read, fast-moving with plenty of thrills and just the right touch of romance — plus, one of the best little girls ever, Lady Margaret, who is just a hoot — and a wolf. A real she-wolf, straight from America. The tale of Callum's growth as a human being, his love for Rebecca (which he fails to recognize until it's too late) and his return to her life after she becomes a widow is engrossing. The widowed Rebecca remembers her best friend, Callum, but is afraid the man is too much like the wild boy who was sent away by her late husband, Ian, Callum's older brother. There is more than a love story, too. It's a mystery and even a bit of a thriller. Callum is determined to learn more about how his brother died, protect his niece and maybe, just maybe, end up with the girl he has loved most of his life. (I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley. Opinions are my own.)
Ten years ago Callum left Scotland broken-hearted, after the only girl he ever cared about chose to accept his older brother Ian’s marriage proposal. News of Ian’s death, and his own ascension to the title of Lord Geiry, brings him back, convinced Ian’s death was no accident. The only question in his mind is whether or not Rebecca was involved in the murder plot… and therefore whether or not she will die with his other enemies.
Discovering that he is an uncle changes Callum’s plans radically, because now little Lady Margaret needs his protection. And so, he soon realizes, does her mother.
I actually really enjoyed the second-chance aspect to Callum and Rebecca’s romance, and this was beautifully written. The issues I had with the story were more the fact that Scottish law was even more biased against women than English law at the time… anyone who Rebecca married would instantly become the owner of her fortune, and no matter whether Rebecca or her husband passed on first, Margaret couldn’t inherit any of it, which is so far beyond right I saw red every time I thought about it. At least Callum made some effort to address that inequity. Frankly, I thought Rebecca should have taken Margaret and left for London long before he got there, flatly refusing any offers of marriage for her daughter’s sake. Her failure to take action annoyed me intensely; she basically just wanted to be rescued, and that’s not something I like much in a heroine.
Therefore, I’m giving this one four stars; well written, but if heroines who sit on their hands waiting to be rescued annoy you, avoid this one.
After reading book two, I was super excited for this story. I have really loved reading this author over the years and she has done some unique highlander style romances that are a “bit” different than what you normally see. This author’s strength is the regency era so even if its a highlander romance its set in this time period. We are taken to these two characters that have been friends pretty much since they were children. Both of them indivuallyhave secretly loved each other but they don’t realize how much until set of circusmtances drive them apart.
Callum left Scotland and moved to America where he started his own business in making Whiskey and other “spirits” and still bitter over losing the woman he loved and having his brother marrying her. But after years of ignoring the letters by his brother, he gets hints that there is something terribly wrong and once he investigates he soon learns that his brother has been killed and and so he moves back to Scotland, to take over the title and make sure that his sister in law is alright. But once he starts searching around, not everything is right about the way that his brother was killed and he suspects foul play.
He easily wins the heart of his niece and many members of the household, but winning over his lady’s heart will take some determination and hard work. Callum admits that he was foolish when he was younger and drinking is the reason he was never able to marry the one woman he has always loved and never forgotten. We see the changes in him from when he was younger to now…more respectable and hard working. We see the regrets that he has especially when it comes to his family.
The romance between these two is quite fun at times, and I honestly just loved seeing the ways that these two begin to fall in love for a second time. Its a second chance, where two people are stronger and responsible and they have both changed but they still have a strong affection for each other. And there is some sassy sexy banter that only Suzanne Enoch can deliver in this way. I won’t say that this book is my favorite of the series, but it had so many unique elements that just draw you in. I felt that Suzanne Enoch handled the murder mystery pretty well and yes the villains are brought down in such a finalizing way that they deserved and the story builds it up pretty intensely which keeps the reader at the edge of their seat.
Book three of the No Ordinary Hero series, it kind of plays out like it's the last one since the antagonist in all three books finally gets his just due. Even though all three books have the common enemy they can be read as standalones; there is very little character crossover and when there is it's only pertinent to this storyline. Suzanne Enoch definitely has a way with words, the characters really came to life for me, and the mystery and the little bit of suspense were very well done, this is probably my favorite of hers so far.
Callum, Ian, and Rebecca all grew up together. Ian the stoic, studious older brother; Callum the fun one and also risk-taker. Rebecca was a neighbor the daughter of a shipping merchant who got rich. Rebecca loved both brother's but when it came time to marry she choose the older not just because the title but because he was who he was and everything Callum was not. Callum was a drunkard who would tup any pretty girl and took nothing seriously. That is until Ian and Rebecca announced their engagement and not only that but a deal between Rebecca's father and the Duke of Dunncraigh. Callum knows Dunncraigh is bad news and after he finished insulting his brother and Rebecca, because how could she want Ian when she can have him, Rebecca insults him back basically saying he's a drunken loser and then Ian kicks him out of the house and the family, but before Callum leaves he tells them what a bad idea it is to get into business with Dunncraigh and if anything bad happens he knows it will be Dunncraigh's fault and he will seek his vengeance.
Callum left Scotland dejected and heartbroken, he never realized how much he loved Rebecca until he realized she wouldn't be there any more and with the truth of her words ringing in his ears he travels to America to create a new life for himself, and he does with his Kentucky Whiskey. A couple of years into in banishment he starts to receive letters from his brother, Callum never even bothers to read them until almost ten years later he sees the obituary for his brother in a months old newspaper, the latest letter goes unburned and Callum finds himself finally going back to Scotland after all these years because he promised he would get his vengeance.
Rebecca was content with her life until Ian died and suddenly followed her Father. The Dunncraigh's had been nothing but generous with their sympathies and their offers to help with the business. The sudden appearance of Callum a year after Ian's death has her all confused she doesn't know what to think of this brisk and brutish man who use to be the boy she knew and what he wants is his inheritance and to make her life miserable. Callum wants to hate Rebecca for what she said all those years ago, he wants her to be a social climbing vixen who had a hand in his brother's death but it's clear she's not and she every bit a beautiful and headstrong as ever and he loves her all the more for it. Now she just needs to stay out of his way while he proves the Dunncraigh and his son are the reason his brother and Rebecca's father are dead. If only it was easier said than done.
Overall, it was a wonderful story, very well done nicely paced. Rebecca could be a little annoying with her stubbornness but her entire world got turned upside down I don't blame her for not believing Callum's suspicions in the beginning. Rebecca and Ian's daughter Mags is so adorably precocious and Callum's wolf and that walking mop of a dog of Mags, that's funny. It has a wonderfully satisfying ending, and I look forward to reading more of Suzanne Enoch.
in a devil in scotland, callum macreath never thought he'd lose rebecca to his brother. she was his best friend. the only woman he could ever imagine loving. and when she not only confirms her engagement, but also repudiates callum for the wild and irresponsible boy he is, he is devastated. when his brother casts him out when callum's anger leaves him no option, he leaves his highland home and heads to america.
ten years later he is a self-made man in the kentucky hills. he's cut himself off entirely from his past life in the highlands. but when a headline reveals that his brother is dead, and he is the next in line for the earldom, he has no choice but to head home.
it's not a warm and pleasant homecoming. callum distrusts everyone. he knows his brother was murdered. and he's just not sure that rebecca wasn't in on it. he's still hurt and angry from the words they exchanged ten years ago. but when he meets his niece, his heart cracks open. and everything changes.
and the more he comes back to his old life, the more his outer resolve weakens. he can't count on everyone being an enemy. and maybe if he counts them as friends, he will finally have everything. he'll have a chance for justice. he'll have the love he thought he'd left behind. he'll have someone to love and protect and cherish.
there is something to be said for having the chance to grow up. if rebecca hadn't cast him aside all those years ago, callum might not be the man he becomes. their past marks them, and even though there is a lot of time lost, it was time they both needed to become the people that they end up being.
**a devil in scotland will publish on january 30, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/st. martin's press in exchange for my honest review.
What a book second chance romance with a ton of suspense.
Not only that, but Rebeccas is tough and even though she was fooled for a long time when she really listened to Callum she decided to get revenge. You know what they say a women scorned...
This story had everything and more.
** I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
A Devil in Scotland is an exciting and passionate story of love, revenge and second chances. Callum left his homeland rejected and angry. He came to America and became a man of independent means. I liked his strength and determination, but I was sad to see that bitterness replaced love in his heart. He's a hard man. When he learns that his brother is dead he returns home. He wants revenge. I liked his loyalty. I chuckled as Callum and his wolf arrived in Scotland. His enemies were not prepared for this Alpha hero. Rebecca, his brother's widow, fainted when she saw him. Callum had been her friend and she cared for him. Now he distrusts her. Did she help kill his brother? I loved how his six year old niece stole his heart and that of his wolf. I couldn't stop reading. I needed to find out how Rebecca and Callum would get their second chance. Their attraction was powerful. Their relationship sizzled as did their dialogue, but the head of clan Maxwell wants them dead. Can they get justice for the dead? Suzanne Enoch kept me on the edge of my seat. The action and the romance are non stop.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
I couldn't put this book down.
I loved the story so much that I read it in one day.
When Ian announces his engagement to Rebecca Callum realizes that he wanted her for himself. His brother banishes Callum and he goes to America now 10 years later he is returning to Scotland, his brother dead. The attraction between Callum and Rebecca is steal steaming and they must work together to get justice for Ian. Can they? This is a fast paced read with plenty of drama and suspense. I liked the story as well as the characters. The story is entertaining and held my interest throughout.
There is almost nothing I love more than a good Highland story and this book was no exception. Filled with murder, betrayal and some good old fashioned long anticipated romance, this is definitely a book worth sinking into on a cozy night. I normally prefer a bit more action as opposed to politics, but the author kept me hooked regardless.
Callum is my favorite kind of hero, the Alpha male who realizes when he gets put in his place and when to compromise. Plus...the man has a wolf....what else do you need?
This was my first book by the author and I look forward to many, many more!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
A riveting story of betrayal, unfulfilled love, murder and a love that has no boundaries.
Callum MacCreath is the younger brother to Ian Earl of Geiry being only twenty he’s more interested in carousing and enjoying himself. Things take an unexpected turn when he learns that his brother decided to venture in business and partner with the evil Duke of Dunncraigh, to add insult to injury and what hurt the most is his brothers announcement that he became betrothed to Becca Sanderson. He’s devasted that he’s loosing the girl he has loved secretly. Unsuccessfully he tries to have her run away with him only to have his brother hear him, resulting in his banishiment from the clan.
Fast forward ten years and Callum is a rich man highly respected in America, learning of his brothers death he’s almost certain his death was nefarious and he knows exactly who had a hand in it....the Duke of Dunncraigh! Everyone is a suspect. He doesn’t believe that Becca wanted his brother dead but why is she thinking of marrying the Dukes son casts suspicions in her direction.
Sparks fly and emotions run high as Becca and Callum come together to solve Ian’s murder. Callum has a killer to catch a woman to court and a little imp to protect.
This was a fast action well paced adventure, full of suspense that kept things moving with much intrigue and mystery. Callum is a roguish devil that instils fear in the villagers, but is the total opposite when it comes to his niece Maggie .
Villains need to be slain before Callum and Becca get their happily ever after. Their connection is fiery and all consuming that defies all obstacles. A five star read that I highly highly recommend. Suzanne Enoch is a master story teller that weaves a magical world that leave the reader breathless! An outstanding EPIC read!
I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest unbiased review.
I really enjoyed Callum and Becca's story! Best friends growing up, Callum and Becca had a special bond, but Callum wasn't marriage material when he finally got around to asking for Becca's hand (plus she was already promised to someone else).
Fast forward 10 yrs and Callum has grown up and is a different man. He is determined to find out who murdered his brother even if it is his childhood friend. He doesn't count on being so attracted to the woman that scorned him all those years ago!!
I'm excited to see what Enoch has in store for use next!
A Devil in Scotland by Suzanne Enoch
A great story about Callum McCreath, who was banished from his home after comments made after just finding out his brother and his friend Becca were to be married. He went to Kentucky, where he became successful with a lot of hard work. Ten years later, he found out that his brother was dead, as well as, Rebecca's father. He knew there was murder involved but he wasn't sure if Rebecca was involved or not. It was a great story which kept me engrossed to the end. Great historical read.
I love this story! It was about Callum who was kicked out of his childhood home by his brother Ian. He breaks all ties, especially since Ian is to marry a childhood friend, Rebecca, who Callum has feelings for. Years later he learns of Ian’s death and realizes he may have been murdered. He returns to Scotland to see what happened, and, most importantly, to make sure Rebecca had nothing to do with Ian’s death. Throw in a wolf, a terrier, and a cute little girl....I couldn’t put this book down.
A sweeping tale that will take you through several years and many life changes. Callum MacCreath is really just a young reckless 20 year old that is in no hurry to get married. But his brother Ian beats him to it, announcing his marriage to Rebecca, their childhood friend. Becoming uncontrollably angry because he wants Becca for himself, Callum is banished due to his behavior and leaves not to be seen for many years. This is a story of second chances, of growing up and seeing the world as it really is for Callum. But as things go, Ian passing away and Rebecca ends up with assistance by friends the Duke of Dunncraigh and his son. After ten long years Callum returns to claim his inheritance after no correspondence from him for all those years. It is a rocky road for Becca and Callum, although there is an attraction that grows. This story was an intense tale that was well written and it showed the author's wonderful research of the time period. The characters become three dimensional and you want to grab and shake them. But in the end I really enjoyed the story and look forward to the next installment in this series.
I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of A Devil in Scotland in exchange for an honest review. And, as a longtime Suzanne Enoch fan, I was very excited to read something new from her. I was not disappointed.
A Devil in Scotland is more than just Regency Romance. It has betrayal and Machiavellian family struggles. The hero, Callum, foreshadows the conflict. Ten years later, he returns to fulfill his vow, while learning who he can trust. Specifically, can he trust Becca? The Bonnie lass who chose his sensible brother and heir to the title, over the wild and drunken Callum. The story is a well-paced romantic adventure of the two falling in love.
While the adventure draws the reader into the dangers, there are no surprises. I still enjoyed the writing and the characters enough to recommend it.
Third volume in the No Ordinary Hero series of which I already reviewed the previous, My Own True Highlander, A Devil in Scotland wan easily be read alone even if there are some allusion to the previous stories quite late in the book.
We follow Callum when he learns of his brother’s death and comes back to Scotland resolute to avenge him, even from his widow if she’s accomplice.
CAllum was banished by his brother Ian ten years ago because he tried and failed to convince Rebecca to marry him instead of Ian the very night of their betrothal. He went to America where he made a fortune with several whisky distilleries, and he spent his time wrapping himself in his wounded pride and his offended susceptibility. He’s even been to the point where he asked his right-hand man to burn any letters from Scotland, even from his brother. But we see quite quickly how this affected him and shaped the man he’s now. He’s hard but fair to those serving him well and even if he stays resolute to avenge himself he’s not deaf to Rebecca’s arguments. He’s also a bit uncouth and accentuates this to shock his enemies.
Rebecca spent years repeating herself she made the best choice by marrying Ian instead of Callum, who was then a barfly who never sobered up and had sex with everything that moved. She lost her husband and her father in a few weeks time and she looks unfavorably on Callum’s return, because he disturbs her fragile equilibrium, and the accusations he throws to the duke to Dunncraigh and his son who helped her during her mourning. She’s still quite strong, she doesn’t hesitate to stand up to him, and tries to find new information to get the truth about those two deaths.
Between them the attraction is quite fast, each thinking first to past feelings, but they don’t yield easily to their desire, they take the time to learn who the other has become in ten years, which allows a lot of sexual tension between them.
The third main character is Rebecca’s six-years-old daughter who brings a little lightness to a somber story and allows to see a more kind side in Callum when he’s still very hard with everyone else.
On the plot side we follow Callum when he tries to find evidences for his suspicions, and the discoveries are slow to come, according to his deductions not always clear from an external point of view. But everything fits together quite well in the end, and the bad guy, who was also the bad guy in the previous volumes, finally gets what he deserves.
As for the fact the British law forbade a man to marry his brother’s widow, Callum very quickly threatens the duke’s son, who hopes to marry Rebecca, with the levirate marriage, tradition apparently tolerated in Scotland to allow lands and possessions to stay in a clan.
All in all it’s a pleasant historical romance but somber than the previous one, and I had a good reading time.
The queen of the highlands is back! Yes, Suzanne Enoch is back with "A Devil in Scotland" and so is the nefarious Duke of Dunncraigh. We've been following the Duke and his schemes in this series and it seems that there is yet another he has wronged. But this time the hero isn't willing to back down.
Callum MacCreath is a twenty year old who has been drinking and whoring his days away without a care in the world when his brother Ian, the Earl of Geiry, announces that he is to wed their childhood friend, Rebecca "Becca" Sanderson. Callum is furious and isn't willing to let Ian have the girl of his dreams. And even though Becca cares about Callum, she feels that she can never be truly happy with someone who is so carefree and reckless. Ian is the trustworthy, safe brother. Ian, is everything that Callum isn't. So when Callum declares his love for his soon-to-be sister-in-law, he is banished from his home. With nothing more than the clothes on his back, he travels to America where we find him ten years later transformed into a completely new man. He is now the founder of the Kentucky Hills Distillery and has spent the last ten years proving to himself that he is much more than what his brother and the Duke of Dunncraigh accused him to be. He has no intention of going back to the highlands. That is until he learns, quite by chance, that his brother died in an accident. An accident that Callum believes to be anything but. And he knows just the man who is capable of orchestrating such a murder and is determined to return back to Scotland and make him and anyone else involved in the murder pay.
It has been a year and two months since Rebecca Sanderson MacCreath lost first her husband and then her father. She is now one of the most wealthy widows in all of Britain and it seems that there are a number of men waiting for her to come out of mourning to ask for her hand. She is certain that her husband's brother and heir to the title, Callum, is dead. So when he appears one day, out of the blue, at her house with a black wolf by his side she is shocked. He is no longer the reckless drunk that he once was and what is even more shocking is the allegations that he has come forth with. For he believes that her husband, his older brother, was murdered and Callum
is about to get revenge on all those involved.
I absolutely loved loved loved Callum. He may not be the most reasonable man you can meet, but he is just so lovable. With his sense of humour, his determination, his frankness and passion, he is the kind of highlander that all girls swoon over. This is not only a romance with sensual love scenes but also full of action which will
leave you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the hero and heroine to gather the evidence to finally put the Duke of Dunncraigh away.
A book full of quirky, lovable characters that will leave you wishing that it never ends! Another great novel by the queen of the highlands! Long live the queen!!!
