Gillian MacLeod was one of twelve sisters, the quiet one, others answered for her and told her what she should wear do, feel, thinking she was too shy or unsure to think for herself. That was not the case. She was a watcher and a thinker and it was easier for her to go along.
Go along she did, even when her father arranged a marriage to a much older man, even when she loved someone else.
But fate intervened and she was paired with her love on the way to her wedding. Attacked by brigands Gillian and the man she adored, English John were held prisoner until she got the chance to free them. As they continued to the wedding venue, the tales of her self rescue were embellished to epic proportions.
Refuting the marriage she returned home to an upset father and mourned the loss of John's company.
Three suitors came for her and her father arranged a contest for her hand, and to her delight ...John came for her.
This is a very bare bones synopsis, it doesn't relate the warmth in between the family characters, the love between Gillian and John and the nasty evil of Rabbie Bain.
Bits of humor are scattered throughout and the tale is quite engrossing.
I requested and luckily was picked for a NetGalley Arc.
Enchanted By The Highlander by Lecia Cornwall is a phenomenal read and makes me wonder why I haven't read more by this author. Ms Cornwall has given us a well-written book. Gillian is the shy, quiet sister of the MacLeods clan. John is a disowned Englishman and captain of the guards for Gillian's brother-in-law. Let me stop here and say, Ms Cornwall has created an amazing cast of characters for this book. John and Gillian's story is loaded with action, adventure, drama, humor and sizzling hot sexy bits. This is a fun book and I enjoyed every page. I look forward to reading more from Lecia Cornwall in the future. Enchanted By The Highlander is book 4 of A Highland Fairytale Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
I gave this book 2.5 stars. While I loved a good historical love story. Especially when they contain Highlanders. This book by turns aggravated me and enchanted me. It was too overdone with the Gillian being too shy and quiet. That got on my nerves, that everyone assumed and made decisions for her. So when she decided to do things by her own rule, she was dismissed. That irked me to no end. Then there was the fact that Scots with exception of a few, were not willing to see John as a man, a decent man. Just because he was English, meant he had to prove himself continuosly. It was too much.. I am well aware of the history between the English and the Scots. But the way the Scots were portrayed as arrogant, blithering, bigoted idiots. Laird McCleod, especially... jumping to conclusions about John's actions all because of preconceived notions about the English. After all, Gillian been through with the first attack, then to be to be kidnapped by the other chieftains, and for John to jump through more hoops as if the damned challenges weren't enough. It was painful and sometimes boring to read through. I skipped pages hoping there would be some kind of reprieve for English John. It was nice to see the romance blossom between him and Gillian, if only they have to go through so much buffoonery and others butting in, thinking they know best. I was exhausted at the end of this book. And not in a good way either.. I voluntarily read this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow! Okay stayed up all night to finish this and am so tired this morning! I like Gillian because I used to be really quiet and know what it's like to have people just assume your answers. I like where John went, I thought he would be more of a rogue than he was and was happy to be wrong. The two worked together so very well.
There was so much going on in this book and it was easy to follow. The whole book was full of adventure and I really enjoyed it!
There were simply too many characters and names for this book to be enjoyable. While I do love an empowered young woman, Gilly's story simply took a bit too long to get going. I read to about the 30% mark and then skimmed the remaining 70% and thought the competition amongst suitors was entirely unnecessary. Based on this novel, I would not read others by the same author.
Gillian MacLeod is the quiet, shy, overlooked sister in a Scottish Laird’s family of twelve daughters until one night she asserts her need for adventure by kissing a disinherited English earl (John Erly) at a masquerade ball. Months go by and Gilly is betrothed to marry a man old enough to be her father to secure a safe future for her, but the problem is she has not forgotten the earlier kiss with John Erly. When Erly is chosen to not only provide escort to her upcoming nuptials but give her away during the ceremony, the two must confront what happened between them and discover a path forward. Excitement ensues when the traveling wedding party is set upon by a group of highwaymen who are known in the area for raping and pillaging and the shocking discovery of Gilly overtaking five of the men alone was phenomenal. She becomes a local legend. Her love for John Erly forces her to call off the wedding and return home to her father, who incidentally strongly dislikes Englishmen, while awaiting John to decide their future. This story is an adventure from the very first page and the development of Gilly from a quiet, docile woman into a fierce force to be reckoned with makes this instantly a favorite of mine. I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for adventure, passion, love, and Scottish kilts; for you will certainly not be disappointed by this romantic tale.
Let me preface this by saying, This was my first experience with this author. I have not read the rest of this series. But I will now!
This is a charming fairy tale story of an unlikely romance between a highland lass and an English outcast. The story was fast paced and fun. I cheered for Gilly when she overcame her overwhelming passiveness. I loved how quick witted she is.
The hero was lovely. English John was brave and strong and honorable.
I am very intrigued by The MacLeod. 9 Wives and 12 Daughters!? That is a story I want to know! I guess I need to do some back reading!
This book is a great, light read. I enjoyed it, and I'm sure you will too!
This novel was a nice read. The author brings love between two people who hide who they truly are. Gillian MacLeod is a quiet and rather shy woman and people usually speak for her. She does not like that, but allows it until she sees John Erly. John was disowned by his father, who blames him for the death of his brother. His brother's death torments John, but he has found ways to make himself successful. Gillian kisses John at a masquerade and he has never forgotten that kiss. Several months later when he sees Gillian again, he knows it is her. However, people have been trying to sway Gillian away from John, but she cannot help how she feels. She is betrothed to a man much older than her, whom she does not love, but everyone tells her it is a good match. However, Gillian decides she needs to voice her own opinions and she begins to, it part due to John. John does not feel he is good enough for Gillian. He escorts to her wedding and they encounter adventures along the way, which changes everything. Gillian makes a choice about her betrothal and this is only part of the story, for there are others in contention when they hear tales of Gillian. Will John be the man who steps up to claim her heart or will someone else claim Gillian?
