My Thoughts:

This book isn't exactly bad, however the time period doesn't suit my interests.

This is a lengthy saga about a young woman who is in service as a maid and her sister who also works the same sort of job.
It begins with the younger sister's wedding day which doesn't go as expected as the girl leaves her bridegroom a note and runs off with the son of her employer.

Mostly due to his devastation Daniel turns to Rosa and eventually marries her. From there the story progresses to their married life and his lack of trust in his wife.

The sister virtually disappears finally surfacing and coming back to Scotland penniless and looking for charity from Rosa and Daniel

This is a mostly clean tale about what ensues. It is a very long story so be prepared to read for hours.
I gave this book 3.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 1.0 of 5.0 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read via NetGalley. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

A pleasant enough book to read and you could imagine a lot of the things that happen in the book happening in the early 1900's.

Very interesting story. I was just wondering what happened to happiness ever after.

Highland Sisters by Anne Douglas. Not a bad story, just seemed that no one truly got their happily ever after. Lorne was to marry Daniel. On her wedding day, she ran off with Rory. As Lorne was Daniel's one true love, it showed throughout the book. Rosa, loved Daniel and couldn't believe her sister did that to him. There was sadness throughout the story and Rosa suffered throughout never getting the love she so rickly deserved until the end. I did find at the end that she would be treated and loved like she should have throughout the book. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

Set in the Scottish Highlands and Edinburgh as the Edwardian era winds down, Douglas’s concise yet engaging romantic novel follows a young woman’s path to fulfillment and illustrates the pain of unrequited love. Lorne Malcolm’s decision to run away with her employer’s son on her wedding morning shocks her older sister, Rosa, and devastates her fiancé, Daniel MacNeil. A housemaid in Inverness, Rosa can’t comprehend Lorne’s self-centeredness, especially since handsome Daniel is quite a catch. Some months later, when Daniel begins courting Rosa, she is thrilled but wary; in his proposal, he asks her to help him forget Lorne, which isn’t the most promising beginning.

They marry and move into a big-city tenement, and the story is sympathetic toward Rosa, left alone all day while Daniel works. Her pursuit of a job outside the home gives her purpose but adds complications to their marriage, since Daniel proves resistant, and she still isn’t certain of his love. The theme of women’s early 20th-century roles figures strongly. Despite some repetitive descriptions, the plotline is eventful and pleasingly unpredictable. Douglas evokes period mores through her characters’ personalities and actions: they may not discuss their feelings openly but yearn for happiness all the same.

Highland Sister by Anne Douglas is the story of Rosa Malcolm whose life is turned upside down after her sister, Lorne, runs away with another man on her wedding day. Left with the aftermath, Rosa soon begins a friendship with Daniel MacNeil, Lorne’s jilted fiancé. Their relationship soon turns into more as they are married and begin their lives together in Edinburgh. As they settle into their routines. Their happiness was shattered with times of mourning, surprise encounters and threats of war.
Highland Sisters is a title that is misleading as the main focus is on Rosa and not both sisters. I kept expecting to see some of the story from Lorne’s point of view, where did she run off to, etc. But no, Rosa is the main character and its her life the story follows. I also was a bit confused about the timeline. The story opens in April 1910 and more than halfway into the story and the author reveals that its only been a year. A year? It doesn’t seem possible. Then from 1911 to 1914 and the start of the Great War. A couple of chapters later, the war’s over. The book had 71 chapters in three parts and while the chapters were short, I feel this is way too many chapters. There were some chapters where absolutely nothing happens that adds to the story or the plot. I cannot recommend Highland Sisters.
