Only a sampler I downloaded, but a really good start to a book, and so one I would buy in future just to continue the story.

The secret child by kerry Wilkinson.
You can run from your past, but it will always catch up with you…
Susie was forced to do something she will always regret. Everything that led to the choice she made had to be buried and forgotten.
Brilliant read. Heartwarming. An emotional read. 5*.

Great book, love this author and how they can keep my attention to the end! The plot is well developed, characters are believable and they obviously paid attention to detail to make the story worth your time to read.

Kerry Fisher breaks my heart into pieces each time.
Tissues at the ready I listened to this.

I’m just glad that when the tears came (often) I was in the privacy of my own room in the house. My family call me ‘soppy Sue’ when I read these tearjerkers.

Making decisions that will affect your future in a big way is what happened here and domino effects of that.
No one can predict the future, you can guess but it’s not set in stone.
Knock-on effects come with any decisions bad or good, right or wrong.

This was an emotive rollercoaster that made me high, then sick to my stomach for certain characters. It left me wanting to hug or send flowers.

I don’t know why I left it so long to read this book, maybe I had to feel emotionally stronger to cope.

Highly recommended to anyone who wants a good ugly sob.

Bookouture and NetGalley provided me with an Advanced Reader's Copy of The Secret Child. The choice to review this book was my own.

Susie was forced to do something she has long regretted. Will the guilt of her long ago secret decision destroy the life that Susie has worked so hard to protect?

I was excited to read The Secret Child, especially given the strength of the reviews. I honestly did not feel a connection to the characters and found the plot to be exhaustingly sluggish in places. The decision by the author to reveal Susie's secret later in the book did not help the reader to feel her emotional devastation. Having the context of the events of the past would have changed my feelings about Susie as a whole. The family dynamics seemed more like plot points than actual progression of time and circumstances. Overall, I was disappointed in the book as a whole and, for that reason, I would be hesitant to recommend The Secret Child to other readers.

Couldn’t put this book down written with so much warmth and empathy. Had tears laughter and some heart wrenching moments. Suzie grives for many years for the child she had to give up. Kerry Fisher erote this story showing how life’s choices can shape your whole life. A fantastic read

I really enjoyed this book. Kerry Fisher has a way of writing everyday female characters in a fantastic way. She's able to tap into the mundane aspects of life and make them thrilling. Her writing style really speaks to me as we often get first-hand accounts of how her main characters feel. Her storytelling has a way of making you feel comfortable. I find this easier to relate to her novels. While The Secret Child is a bit slow in parts, the payoff is there & I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.

Special thanks to Kerry Fisher & Bookouture for providing my copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.

The Secret Child is an incredibly emotional and heart rending story about a mother’s loss of a child. Susie’s decision to give up her young child for adoption was not an easy one to make; she was not a young teenager but a married woman but if her husband found out it could end her marriage. It was something that she always deeply regretted and the decision haunted her, having a huge impact on her life and relationships with her family. The Secret Child explores the fallout of that decision for over 40 years, first from Susie’s perspective and how she is with her family and includes the voices of other family members too.

The book is split into two parts and although this came as a surprise, this dual viewpoint worked well for me. Having the story told from the point of another character gave a whole new perspective which I found very insightful and actually changed my opinion of the person.

I’m not a maternal person at all and initially I didn’t really feel Susie’s pain but as the story went on and it became clear how it affected her life, I felt some empathy with her however it was the other family members that I felt the most sorry for as they knew that something wasn’t right but didn’t understand why. The characters are well drawn with clear and distinct personalities.

This is another book by Kerry Fisher that I have very much enjoyed. She writes so well and has a great talent for drawing the reader into her family dramas.

*Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

4 stars.

I absolutely loved how this was written. Instead of the story spanning over only a year or two, this is spread out over decades! It was so interesting to watch the story unfold and how the characters grew. The lives of this family are complex and emotions while reading were quite high. The story was also written in a way where there were two narrators. I wont give away who they are but im rather glad that this had happened. You could feel the hurt, the sadness, the fear and all the other emotions involved. Giving up a baby for adoption and the fact that the main character had held onto this secret was so powerfully written and heartbreaking. I'm trying to imagine doing that myself, the whole, put yourself in others shoes type thing, and just how overwhelming it all feels. I liked all the characters and they all definitely brought something to the story. It also helped me see what happens to a friendship when paths break and are not mended. I felt so sad over how much time had passed between two of the characters because of a fight they had. (Again, I will not spoil who it was between.) I found this story grabbed my attention and held onto it throughout the whole book. Definatly one I recommend.

The Secret Child is set in the 1960's onwards and the book is narrated firstly by Suzie, then later by her daughter Grace. When Suzie finds herself pregnant out of wedlock (her husband is away in the navy) she is forced to join a mother and baby unit run by nuns and her baby is adopted. Suzie agonises over this decision for the rest of her life and it greatly affects how she brings up her two children.A heartbreaking story which is an excellent portrayal of the bond between mother and child. I really disliked Suzie's mother who forced her to put a child up for adoption in order to save face, thank goodness times have changed,

Today I am part of the Bookouture blog tour to celebrate the publication of Kerry Fisher's latest release, The Secret Child, a heart warming novel which addresses a mother's worst nightmare, giving birth to a baby and having to give him up because he was the result of a fling with a naval officer while her husband is away at war.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a book that tugged on my maternal heart strings on a subject which I am sure many women have experienced and still hold this secret many years later. I really liked the inclusion of the Janet and John books within the story, where Susie (the mother) is reminded of the 'traditional' family, mum, dad, daughter and son, and a constant reminder of the missing son she had to give away and only her mother knows of his existence. It is a walk down memory lane for those readers growing up in the sixties, Family Circle magazine, also plays a big part in the story, another grounding element within the well researched story. The story really is a tear jerker, but in a good way, it was a book that I could loose myself in and I really felt for Susie and her family through this difficult time.

The Secret Child is a poignant tale, one which will stay with the reader after finishing it and is a book suitable for book club reads with a number of topics that make for great discussion.

Thank you to the publishers for sending me a copy of the book in return for an honest revie

It’s 1968 and Susie must do the unthinkable, she must give her baby away. Her mother convinced her that if her husband came back to find her with a baby that couldn’t possibly be his then her marriage would be over. She has no choice. She has her beautiful little boy, cares for him for a few weeks and then has to give him up to his new family. No one knows, only her and her mother.
The story spans the years to current day and follows the heart break of Susie and shows how this decision made so many years ago and unknown by those around her have affected Susie every single day of her life.
I cried several times while reading this, I ugly cried a few times too. I wanted to reach into the book and comfort Susie and her family.
This book is an emotional roller coaster and you’ll need a big box of tissues but the story is beautifully told, like you’re listening to an old friend tell you of their life.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book to read and review

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy this story. Suzie is married to Daniel, it's the 1960's. Daniel is in the Navy and goes on lengthy trips abroad. Suzie sings with a local band and one night is raped. She gives birth to a son at a Nursing Home and he is given up for adoption. Only her mother knows about this. From then on Suzie becomes a miserable, joyless, moaning wife and mother to her two children. She wastes her life in my opinion as she has a fantastic husband and two lovely healthy daughters. Secrets have a habit of being discovered and eventually Suzie's is.
