Then She Was Gone was a heart stopping, well paced read, that kept me on the edge of my seat. This was my third Lisa Jewell story and it was definitely my favorite. I really don't want to give away too much from the book because the less you know the more enjoyable your read will be.

Then She Was Gone has some fantastic characters (Laurel, Ellie, Hanna, Poppy, Noelle, Floyd) and the amount of emotions that I felt over the course of this book- Lisa Jewell definitely knows how to keep an audience interested. I did have to knock out a star because I am still trying to figure out one aspect of the storyline and I will admit that I had whispers figured out some of the "revealations." However, I am still going to give a solid 4 stars because I just couldn't put it down!

I like Lisa Jewel. In all honesty, this book was not the best of what I have read. However, although predictable it was entertaining and a quick read.

Then She Was Gone was a dark and interesting read, but also predictable.

It wasn't hard to put all the pieces together early on, to figure out the "who done it" or "who done what." I felt like the novel lacked any element of surprise, shock value, or a true twist, but I was still intrigued. Connecting the dots was easy, I wanted to learn more about the why and the how.

The story that unfolded was creepy, and somewhat disturbing. Some things seemed quite implausible, but overall I was entertained by the story, and I liked how the author ended it.

A satisfying read, and my first by Lisa Jewell. Check it out if you're into the mystery and/or thriller genres.

Then She Was Gone is primarily told from Laurel Mack's POV about her teenage daughter who disappears without a trace. The police have no leads, so therefore assume she has run away. Laurel does not believe that her daughter would up and leave her family, friends or her boyfriend, so she becomes a shell of the woman she once was. Ten years after her Ellie's disappearance, Laurel meets Floyd - a single father who helps her to become whole again. However, when she meets his daughter, Poppy, her resemblance to her missing daughter is uncanny. So, now the question is.. Who is Floyd, really?

As the answers to all kinds of questions start to unfold, the reader can just feel the dark, suspenseful drama begin to unravel. This novel was heart-breaking, but disturbing. I was so intrigued with the characters that I had a hard time putting this one down! It was extremely well written, however slightly predictable.

I really enjoyed when the POV shifted to the different characters, as well as when it changed from the present to the past. The reader can really get a sense of what those characters are feeling or why they chose to make certain decisions.

I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who enjoys physological thrillers and/or mystery crime-type novels. Big 4/5 stars!

A well written book which I had a hard time putting down. The heartbreaking story of a mother whose daughter goes missing. How her life and her family life changes over the years. How she desperately wants to know what happened to her loving daughter.
The ending was so touching it brought tears. Highly recommend this book.
Thank you Netgalley , publisher and Lisa Jewell for the opportunity to read this book.

Thank you for the book! It was well written and easy to follow. I didn't love the ending and the story line was a little predictable, but I still really enjoyed it and read it in one day. The storyline flowed easily and I liked the "now" and "then" back and forth as well as reading from different character's points of view.

Then She Was Gone starts well with perfect pacing. Quick little chapters alternate between the past and present and do a delightful job of slowly weaving the fabric of the characters' lives. We get to know the main players in the story, and I started to really connect with the main character, Laurel Mack. The chapters set in the past give us a bit of the background of Ellie's life before she went missing, with little teases about what might have happened. I was really sucked in and found myself reading "just one more chapter" until before I knew it I'd finished all 12 chapters of Part 1 in a single sitting.

Unfortunately, after about 50 pages the book became rather predictable with very little mystery left to keep me guessing. At about halfway through the book things picked back up again, but I was really only reading to find out whether I'd guessed certain details correctly. I found myself wondering why the alternating chapters between "now" and "then" hadn't been consistent throughout the book, because I think the story would have unravelled more organically that way and more tension could have been built up.

Overall, Then She Was Gone was very readable with interesting characters, and it was never a chore to read. But I would have preferred a book that built more tension by keeping me in the dark about certain facts for longer than it did. While I'd definitely try another Lisa Jewell book, I can't recommend Then She Was Gone to anyone looking for a real thriller.

This is my first read from this author, and I can safely say it will not be my last. A story of a mother whose youngest daughter goes missing. How her life and her families lives change afterward, and the man and his daughter who bring her back to life in a sense. This was a well executed mystery, told from multiple POV's and spanning many years from past to present.

The novel focuses much more on the characters and family dynamics between Laurel and her son and daughter in the years since the disappearance of her other daughter, Ellie. There are parts which are quite sad and emotional and there's definitely still the element of mystery - it just didn't feel like the main narrative in this book. I did, however, really enjoy finding out what had happened to Ellie.

The storyline here is dark, disturbing and heartrending, but utterly compelling! As usual with Lisa's books, the characters have real depth, especially the twisted ones, and the plot weaves together well. A must read if you enjoy a book that puts the hairs on the back of your neck up!

Expected a typical psychological thriller storyline from Then She Was Gone but was pleasantly surprised by Lisa Jewell. Then She Was Gone was my first Lisa Jewell novel and I can safely say it will not be be my last. Although some twists and turns were expected (led on my Jewell), once you get to the last page you will be left jaw dropped.

I don’t want to say too much because you can read the synopsis yourself. I recommend you give this one a shot, you won’t be disappointed! I haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I finished it a few weeks ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is turned into a motion picture.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of Lisa Jewell’s Then She Was Gone.

I would like to thank netgalley, the author and the publisher for letting me read and review an advanced copy of this book.

I enjoyed reading this book. I did guess who had taken Ellie. The turmoil that Ellie's family went through was explored through her mom and to a lesser extent her sister and her dad while her brother's feelings weren't really explored. The division of the book into parts also helped to separate things.

I give this book four stars and would recommend it. Thanks again for the chance to read this book. I look forward to reading another book by this author.

I was introduced to a Lisa Jewell novel a few months ago. I read I Found You and it involved a man who disappeared. I found myself going back and forth between two different men throughout the whole novel. I was doubting myself every chapter and constantly changing my mind. I enjoyed that my mind keep switching who the mystery man was and even though I found the novel wrapped up a bit too perfectly, I loved the ride.

Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy Then She Was Gone nearly as much. It was predictable and was pretty much tied up with a perfect little bow at the end.

Ellie went missing when she was 15 years old, destroying her mother in the process. 10 years later, Ellie’s mother, Laurel is trying to get her life somewhat back to normal. After Ellie’s disappeared, her marriage ended and she closed off her relationship with her other two children. Laurel meets a man, Floyd, and she is sweep off her feet. She then meets Floyd’s daughter, Poppy, and Laurel is shocked. She looks just like Ellie and Laurel is struggling whether to reopen all her feelings and questions about Ellie’s disappearance.

The premise was interesting, but it was also super predictable to figure out what happens. Sadly, I found that there was no shocking twist or something to throw me off track. Without going into spoilers, there is an event that happens and I question if it was medically possible to happen. It felt like the novel was reaching just to have everything work out perfectly at the end.

4.5 stars

This is my second novel by Lisa Jewell and I have to say I loved it. I read I Found You which was good, but this one topped it. Jewell's is very profound and it's so smooth that you just fly through each word with a feeling of satisfaction.

15 year old Ellie Mack left her house one day asking her mom to save her the last piece of lasagna but never returned home. Years later, her mother is dating a guy who has a young daughter, Poppy, who is the spitting image of her missing daughter Ellie. Coincidence?

I've read many "missing girl" novels but I have to say that so far, this is one of my favorites. It has everything that a story like this needs. A grieving mother who will not stop until she finds out what happened to her daughter. A strong female protagonist. This novel will have you questioning everything and everyone. Who can I trust? Who is telling the truth? It's just so good.

I did figure out what happened to Ellie halfway through the novel but that did not take away from the novel. It still had me asking for answers such as "WHY?" and I was not disappointed at all. It is such a great book and the story is so amazing and complex. Although it does have its creepy thrilling moments that gave me goosebumps, it also has an emotional aspect to it. It's very rare to find novels that share both genres and authors that balance them both very well. Jewell does this well. It is emotional and thrilling and the moments are placed in the right spots it's just perfect.

This book has an incredibly creepy factor. It honestly scares me that there are actual people out there who would do things like that in real life. It's good creepy though. You know it's sickening but at the same time you enjoy reading it. The ending of the novel was very satisfying and I almost cried myself.

I really don't want to spoil this book but it is a must read!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Then She Was Gone, by Lisa Jewell, is a psychological thriller similar to several other novels that have been popular recently. The main character, Laurel Mack, is a grieving mother whose third child, Ellie, disappeared 10 years ago. Ellie had been the golden child, 15 years old and in love with life. Her unexplained disappearance had ripped apart her family leading to her parent's divorce and Laurel's disconnect with her other two children.

This is the first book that I have read written by Jewell and I enjoyed her straight forward writing style. Even when her chapters flip back and forward in time the story flows together nicely. Her character development is robust – always my favourite part of any story! The plot line, however, is rather thin and once you are familiar with the various players in this thriller you will soon figure out what happened to poor Ellie. Although Then She Was Gone is a dark read it's central theme proves to be the importance of family and forgiveness.

I recommend this book.

Ellie Mack was fifteen years old, the apple of her mother’s eye, the academic darling and teacher’s favourite. Then she went missing, leaving her family and all who loved her with nothing but questions about why such a perfect child would just up and disappear. When her body is located ten years later, it provides closure to Ellie’s mother, Laurel, but there are still the unanswered questions. When Laurel meets Floyd, she is surprised by her blossoming feelings for her and feels herself being drawn into a world she has shut herself off from for many years. However, when Laurel meets Floyd’s daughter Poppy, the questions resurface. Poppy looks eerily similar to her missing daughter, Ellie. Is it just a coincidence? How well does Laurel really know Floyd and what secrets is he keeping?
“Then She Was Gone” by Lisa Jewell is a unique gem of a novel. Told from alternating viewpoints, by different narrators, and across different points in time, the novel tells the tale of a young girl who has gone missing, and a mother’s desperate search to rebuild her life without her. It’s a clever and powerful novel filled with emotion and intrigue.
Going into this novel virtually blind, as I hadn’t really read many reviews and tried to ignore others’ opinion on the novel (for the time being), I wasn’t sure what to expect. The novel started off brilliantly, with Ellie’s disappearance. However, after that when the focus shifted to Laurel and her journey to rebuild her life, I lost a bit of my focus. Initially I questioned why the topic of the novel had shifted so drastically when clearly the disappearance of Ellie was so intriguing. I’m glad I kept going with it though, as the answers very quickly revealed itself.
This novel was creative and kept me entertained throughout. I loved Laurel and her broken family, as well as sweet little Poppy. “Then She Was Gone” was beautifully written, with well-developed characters and a strong plot. This novel is in the same vein as “Reconstructing Amelia”, with maybe a small amount of “The Lovely Bones” mixed in, but Jewell’s gem of a novel has earned the right to stand on its own feet. A great read for those who want a little bit of everything in a tidy package. I look forward to Jewell’s next release!

Then She Was Gone is very well written and easily one of the hardest books to put down for 2018!

If you're looking for a mystery with just a touch of romance, AND are a huge fan of books such as, The Girl on the Train and I Let You Go , then this is a book that needs to be read!

Every page held me captive as clues began to surface and the story unfolded with twists and turns and shocking, but sometimes predictable, revelations.

This was such an interesting book and I look forward to reading more books by this author!

This was a good book... I loved all of the viewpoints, especially Ellie's. While I found Laurel to be a bit strange, I liked her.
There's not a lot of suspense in this book, I kind of knew the who and what from the start but I had to keep reading to find the why.
Ellie's story is heartbreaking and I shed a few tears while reading her point of view. Laurel doesn't seem to elicit a lot of emotion and I questioned her decisions a few times. The way she fell so quickly for a strange man seemed a bit unrealistic.
The story is a bit weird and takes a few turns that seem strange but it seems to work and I had a hard time putting the book down. I loved the ending, it was perfect for this story.
I really like this author and I look forward to more books from her.
