Great idea for a story but badly executed. About halfway through the book I lost interest. Not bad writing but not particularly engaging either.
This book was cute and funny and sad all in one. I loved it and recommend it to any one who enjoys that sort of thing
Absolutely adore the cover of this book! That's what drew me to it, but unfortunately, this book was definitely not for me. KT, the protagonist and narrator, is infuriatingly annoying and although we do expect some immaturity from our YA characters, she doesn't act a day over 12. We really get no relief from any of the other characters either, including parental figures, they are equally bad.
The writing had me cringing, I just couldn't relate to the characters and the dialog was so far-fetched. I had trouble imagining any teenager saying, "We're off to see the Willard!".. that's just one example. The plot was outrageous and unrealistic and don't get me started on the 'romance'. Constantly hounding a girl who has rejected your advances on countless occasions and told you to leave her alone, but, still you persist day in and day out. That is not cute - that's harassment
.
I'm clearly not the type of reader this book was intended for. I'd say this book is targeted towards very young YA readers. I think it would have done much better if it had been marketed as a Middle-Grade book instead.
I requested this book on NetGalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
With "806" i discovered how different people can share a bond. In this novel there are three young children that have in common their donor father.
At first, KT (Katie), Jesse and Gabe are surprised to discover their connection with the 806's donor. Then they agree with the search of their biological father.
After two dead ends and a lot of adventure (they borrow a car and head off across the country) the happy ever after seems to be happening.
I like how the protagonists developed and the shared with the other their feelings and fears.
This novel is a really chill read. It has a lot of fun but also serious scenes.
806, the diary-style story of three didn't-know-they-were-siblings siblings, is a cute coming of age novel about finding yourself and making family what you want it. I enjoyed the humor in some places, but the pacing and narrative voice of the plot made it difficult to read. I found myself constantly picking it up and putting it down after only a chapter or so. Now that I've finished it, I honestly can't remember anything that stuck out other than the beginning where KT finds out about her 'father'.
It had potential, but didn't work for me.
I had such high expectations for this one after reading the synopsis but i just felt it was filled with unnecessary teen drama and felt to unrealistic. A bit disappointed in this one.
The writing style made this story compulsively readable and very fast paced. I related so much to the main character and her disbelief in all things sappy. It was very refreshing to see a young girl who isn’t all about love. Of course she has a mild change of heart, but it was very sweet and I was on board with the love story...although some aspects of it could send the wrong message (like when a girl says no she doesn’t mean it, so remember kids, NO MEANS NO ALWAYS. Don’t harass people k?).
The road trip aspect was so much fun, and the cast of characters were so interesting.
The journey these three characters go on to find their dad is quite beautiful, as was watching this entire mismatched family come together to create something special. It was a perfect mix of feel goodiness and real life blended together. There was a whimsical element to the story that was absolutely irresistible. Overall, I really loved it.
A road trip between teenagers to discover their roots as in their biological father?
This sounds awesome. Exactly my kind of book, without a doubt!
But although I was really excited about this story... I didn't meet my expectations.
I did enjoy some of the sibling relationships and interactions, but at times it felt forced, and fake and unrealistic.
This book just wasn't for me, but I'm sure some people will love it.
I received an ARC on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions in this review are my own.
Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgally for review purposes.
This was a little hard for me to sit through to be honest. The writing style just seemed too young for the subject matter, and the characters - especially the main character - acted more like a eleven year old child constantly have a tantrum than an actual teenager.
Everything seemed over-exaggerated and cheesy. No one acts like any of the people in this book, and sometimes not even in a soap opera.
🤷
Fun joyride of a story as three teens, unknown to each other before their quest, and totally unalike, discover they are offspring of the same sperm donor! And to think, some odd stories may be out there in reality! There are lots of twists and turns and adventures unforeseen. Teens are going to enjoy this story@ The "new" dad is a hoot with quite a tale to tell! I hope all real life stories end so well.
Now while this novel was a fast, light read it – I couldn’t really get into the characters and thought some of them were spoiled.
I did love that the siblings “bonded” over finding their dad and making memories along the way.
I have not read anything else by this author and I would give her another go!
This story about three teenagers discovering themselves and their families made me laugh at the difficulties the characters face on their road trip to find their donor "father". I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a feel-good story, even though parts of it were somewhat predictable.
806 is a quick read about three teenagers who discover they all share the same sperm donor, and set out to find him.
I really enjoyed the idea of the book. I love road trip storylines. There is always great conversations to be had, little mishaps, and usually a great ending.
Unfortunately, there were too many of these things trying to be crammed into one short book.
I think that if one or two of their "crazy" adventures had been left out, (was the jeep getting stolen that necessary?) and the author gave more time to develop our relationships with the characters, I would have enjoyed it more. Some of the characters ( I am looking at you KT, Dylan, Mom) were so whiny, and woe is me, that I didn't really care much what they had to say or if things worked out for them. Which, predictably, they do.
I think that this book will probably be best enjoyed by middle school aged girls. (but let's just hope they treat their friends and family better than KT!)
DNF at 35%. I'm just not invested, will not buy for my library. I've read better road trip stories. The title could also be better. Not enough information in the title to interest my kids.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book to honestly review.
I really don’t know where to begin with this review as I’m still trying to figure out if I enjoyed what I just read.
As a whole the plot to this book is a great one with great potential however the execution seemed rushed to me, this book is definitely fast paced and has a lot happening in each chapter but maybe that’s not a good thing. When I first began reading this I kinda wanted to stop because everything just seemed rushed and uneven, I feel like it definitely could have more imputed into the plot to even it out, maybe slow down the whole meeting of the siblings because for me it seemed too sudden especially since I didn’t fully understand KT as a character.
The characters did slightly grow on me as I read on and a few chapters really did make me laugh but I just can’t help but feel a little disappointed in this book like Dylan appeared stalkerish and really creepy to me that if I had someone in my life so adamant about being in my life I would probably call the police on him. KT, Jesse and Gabe as single characters were kinda underdeveloped to me, I really feel like they could be something more if the plot flowed slower and gave them time to evolve as characters instead of being rushed into convenient placed scenes.
It was all kinda predictable and unrealistic, now I know this is a work of fiction but it would have greatly improved this whole book if the whole unnecessary unrealistic parts were died down and a more believable chapters were added into the plot.
So in short this book could be amazing if everything was ironed out and a slower pace was scheduled in.
Once again thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an E-copy of this book.
The concept of this book had seemed extremely interested to me, as well as the title when I picked it up and I was extremely excited to read it but as I did read it, I found that it was quite repetitive and I just didn't want to go through with it.
I ended up finishing the book just to see who their father really was and well, I have to say that the series of coincidences and disappointments in regards to being unable to find their father annoyed me.
I also found the protagonist, KT annoying at bits with how self-centred she was and how she treated Dylan. The romance between her and Dylan was not something that was needed in the book according to me and felt extremely forced. honestly, I didn't care what happened between them.
But, all this does not mean that the book did not have good parts. It did - with how the kids met their real father and what happened with that and how KT's brothers decided what they wanted to do.
I also pretty much liked KT's friend and how she supported KT and covered for her.
Another thing I really liked was how KT reconciled with her mother and made everything better! It showed that she was a little redeemable and helped me like the book a bit more!
Abandoned at chapter 3... The character is super annoying, to the point where I can't get through any more of her...
806 is about three kids trying to find their biological father, who was a sperm donor. Even though this was a really interesting premise I felt like the characters were all very flat and stereotypical. KT was the edgy one, Jesse the jock, and Gabe the nerd, and they were all so extremely exaggerated that it took me out of the story. I couldn't connect to any of the characters and felt like they were just hopping from plot point to plot point.
Do you ever find a book that entirely and completely what your soul needs in a book? This is me at this moment. I am so light and full of joy. There is a really big smile on my face as I write this review. Let's talk specifically about what I loved about this book. It was fast-paced, and had road trips, and character development, and was just kooky enough to keep my attention. I sped through this book in maybe three hours, and I didn't want it to end.
I adored every character and the development each of them had. KT grows on you once you get past her hard exterior and pain. Jesse evolves from perfect, and nerdy Gabe finds his feet too. The 806 kids have my heart.
For the love of all that is holy, if you're looking for 2000s nostalgia, heartwarming family content, and all of the trappings of a budycop movie, read this book.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book's premise sounded so awesome! three kids go on a roadtrip to find their biological father. Yes. some of the events were extremely unrealistic, but lets be honest, do we always read books for realistic scenerios? I don't.! This was funny and yes at times far fetched but still finny in a very campy kind of way. It was a cute light read.
