806 was such a cute, fun read! I really enjoyed the writing style as well as the unique storyline. I don't think I've ever read a story about someone with a sperm donor dad. Very interesting read! I highly recommend it!
It's a light, fun story about sudden siblings. Three teens who wouldn't hang out if it weren't because they discovered they have the same biological dad (a sperm donor). It had some problematic issues (I can't forget when the girl asks one of her sudden brothers if one of his moms "turned straight" because they were separating, wtf). If those things were different I would've enjoyed this book a lot more. Even if it was pretty predictable, sometimes you just want a fun road-trip comedy teen book, you know?
I received this one as a part of Bookish First in return for an honest first impression.
A young author book based on friendship between siblings and a road trip to meet their biological father. Those three things bring about a charming tale, although some parts were slightly difficult, of what happens when they are combined. The three siblings are not like each other and they have to overcome obstacles to find a place where they can appreciate each other. Much like real life scenarios between siblings. The realistic journey of what could be, what happens when you basically get over yourself and see the good in those you love, and going along for the ride made this a worthwhile read. There is a bit of teen drama, but it is a teen drama, so that should be expected. It definitely requires looking past that and finding heart in this one that does live there.
Once I read the plot I expected the story to be told through three sets of eyes but that task ended up being given to those of one, Katie (Or as she liked to be called K.T). I have never read a book like this before and that fact drew me in instantly. Some parts were confusing because of how they were explained and it was very fast paced but easy going at the same time. A lot of stuff happened that just wouldn’t in real life but that’s okay because it made for a good story.
I loved seeing them all bond and grow as people forming a friendship. “806” made me believe that anything is possible because of the madcap adventure that K.T, Jesse and Gabe went on. The book finished in such a different place and I never predicted it would be that way (mainly because it was so out there 🤷😂).
Character analysis (I’ve always wanted to do one of these! 😂)
K.T: In the beginning I wasn’t sure if I liked Katie (it’s easier just to write her real name!). She was very quick to judge and rude, especially to Dylan and her siblings who have all done nothing wrong. She came across as thinking she was better than them all but she changed as the story went on and became more approachable.
Jesse: I was unsure how to take Jesse but I soon realized he’s someone the book needed. His true personality shone through and he proved K.T wrong about how a popular person should be inside contrary to their exterior.
Gabe: I think he was my favourite character as he really came out of his shell and surpassed Katies initial belief of him. He showed everyone that he is not to be overlooked.
Kim (Katie’s mum): Her behavior was weird and she seemed to be more obsessed with finding her next boyfriend than taking care of her daughter and seeing what was going on. I’ll give it to her though, she asked the right questions when pushed despite being absent the majority of the time.
Dylan: Dylan’s obsession with K.T was odd and had a slightly fake air to it but despite this I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him every time his advances were turned down even if it was strange that he wasn’t going about it another way.
If I were to explain any more people I’d surely give the game away so I won’t 😉
I really enjoyed this book and would like to give it a 4 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book keep me reading. It had interesting twists and I was anxious to see how it would end up. I would definitely recommend it to my YA readers.
an overall good book, but it honestly didn't live up to its potential.
There was a lot of small (probably unnecessary) events going on, that never really felt finished and a bit rushed, which made the whole story seem a bit unfinished.
Especially the ending was for me a bit weak. With that said, I did enjoy most of the book and I liked the background for the story. It was a good book idea and definitely an original Road trip story.
This is a short read and the pace is pretty good, but I just couldn't get invested. I liked the premise, teens trying to connect with a part of themselves they have yet to meet, but the execution felt a little childish and left me on the surface while I was hoping to dig deeper.
806 is a bit far fetched for me. I found it sometimes confusing and weird. It was entertaining. I think young adult readers will enjoy it though. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of the weirdest books I've read in a while and yet I enjoyed it?
Like a guy literally got ran over and hit in the balls and the guy that hit him to make a sperm donation in his name and give him the 50 quid and this whole thing lead to him meeting hi wife. I mean …
I wasnt enjoying this at first and considered dnf-ing it but I always try and make it to 50% unless I slip into a slump and about halfway in I did start enjoying this more but that's more to do with how weird it was then any actual improvement.
Everything that happened went so fast and everything was so convenient that it was funny. The author even introduced a type of psychic to the plot and turned this other dude into the same hippie dippie stuff with just one conversation.
As weird as this was I did like the bond that grew between the three donor kids.
This book takes you on a journey -- literally and figuratively! It allows you to experience the life of KT and her siblings and the time they take to find their biological father. The novel, in general, was heartwarming and relatable. However, there were some moments where I felt that the humor was hard to understand and the plot was sometimes cliche. I really enjoyed the plot altogether and the antics between KT and her siblings. I have a sibling of my own and it was very relatable. Overall, the novel was relatable. However, I don't believe I will be adding this book to my reread list.
I really liked the characters in this book, but I felt that the story was disjointed. I enjoyed the relationship between the 3 siblings and the road trip and I even liked the meetup with their sperm donor, but the detours were mostly silly. The trip to Sedona was silly. Willard was a joke. And the ending with the "loving" meetup of the extended family in St. Louis was too pat.
I think it would be fun to explore how they the siblings coexist back at school, instead of having the extended family come together for a "heartwarming" family gathering.
I really found this writing to be juvenile and wouldn't have finished the book if I didn't feel like I'd already slogged through so much of it. All the "plot twists" were expected from the first introductions of characters, and the emotions were all lackluster and somewhat not real. It felt like the author had never actually been a teenager.
This book was a huge disappointment. It was so contrived and ridiculous that I had to wonder if it was intended to be satire? But if so, what was it trying (and failing) to satirize? The topics of donor siblings and the definitions of family are complex, fascinating, great material for a book, but this was just a wasted opportunity. It was full of ridiculous coincidences, relationships built on nothing, major emotional connections made out of the blue without any growth or consideration, and a stalker dude who gets rewarded for his behavior. It read like a story I might have written when I was eight years old. These kids find their dad, he’s a rock star, he immediately falls in love with them and has no concerns, they also have no mixed feelings, and then they all perform at his rock concert and everything is perfect? Truly, it’s so over the top that I cannot believe the story was serious, but if it was intended in some sort of humorous light, I totally missed the joke.
806 is like a make believe story and very quirky and refreshingly different. Just that three kids created by a sperm donor know each other is weird enough. Their travels all over together to find their donor father are just crazy and the wild goose chases are a hoot. The whole story is filled with stuff that probably would not really happen but plausible enough that maybe they could. Just expect the unexpected at every turn.
I was able to read a snippet of this before it was released and was immediately intrigued by the premise. The story takes you on a whirlwind of emotions that are heartwarming and breaking at the same time. It follows a family that didn't get to be a family and are trying to figure out their lives.
I didn’t really expect to enjoy 806 too muchThe characters, from main to the side ones, are all likeable in their own way and was such a delight to read even though at times they seem silly. I am okay with it as I came to realize early on that I need not take this book seriously. Not that it’s outrageous or anything. It’s just that things get a little over the top and too coincidental at times and might require suspending disbelief to fully enjoy this book.
Katie, or KT as what she wants to be called, is the main character of the story and also the narrator. She’s funny and takes no nonsense kind of girl. It was fun meeting her siblings, too. The jock, Jesse, and the nerd, Gabe. I had a hoot getting to know them through KT’s description. And just like her, it was hard to imagine the three of them are related to each other. But as the story progress and they spend more time together, we also slowly get to know each character on a deeper level and I just can’t help but root for them. Jessie wants people to know that there is more to him than his good looks, while Gabe’s allergies to everything doesn’t help his confidence at all. I love that it’s not only KT that we see grow here. We also witnessed how Jesse and Gabe’s characters developed and were given their own moments no matter how short. Their biological dad is also a joy and I just love how everything turned out for the three teens.
I especially enjoyed the road trip which led to lots of unexpected turns and disappointments but also bonded the siblings and helped them grow. This book is far from perfect. There are flaws here and there but as a whole, this is a light and quick read. Less drama, less romance, less conflict. Heartwarming and funny. Predictable, sure, but definitely entertaining.
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. “806” by Cynthia Weil is a fun, fast-read about three newly found siblings’ road trip to find their biological father. Even though the issues discussed are serious, the author was able to portray them in an easy-to-read and upbeat way.
Often, we use novels, especially Young Adult novels, as a way to escape our own lives and this book allows you to follow the main characters along a very interesting road trip. The teens are portrayed as real teens. They are not perfect. They make mistakes. They say and/do the wrong things. They have feelings. They express those feelings without falling into teenager's typical stereotypes. They have opinions. They let those opinions be known. While some of their antics were a bit unbelievable, don't most novels make you suspend reality? I found myself enjoying and engrossed by the story and characters and cheering for them to succeed and find their father.
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing style. I have not read anything by this author but I have heard, liked, and sang along with many of the songs she wrote. Check out her long list of songs on Wikipedia. I would add her to my "want to read" list.
806 is a cute story (emphasis on cute) about 3 kids on an adventure of a lifetime tho find out who they are. The main character, KT, was led to believe her father was a jerk that left before she was born. After discovering the truth she meets up with 2 other kids and finds herself in a beat up Jeep driving cross country.

The writing is good, the story is sweet and cute though highly unbelievable. It was one bad thing then the next lucky break, one after the other and that made the story more of a fairy tale than a relatable YA story. All wrapped up with a happily ever after ending.

If happily every after is your thing then this is definitely for you.

To quote one of my favorites lines in Harry Potter it “has the emotional depth of a teaspoon”. Seriously even the teen angst is sappy. This book could use a spoon full of hot sauce to help of go down.
So maybe I wouldnt recommend it to avid YA booklings but may be a middle school girl or boy who likes fairy tale endings. I give it 2.5 stars.

Thank you to NetGally who provided a copy of 806 for a fair and honest review.
The synopsis of this book intrigued me especially since I was listening (and still am) the audiobook of [book:Far from the Tree|33830437] and the blurb and the plot overall reminded me (just a little) of that.
In 806, we follow Katie (or KT as she likes to be called), a young girl who seems to be really bitter at first, as she finds out the truth about her biological father. Turns out he's an anonymous sperm donor!
Once she meets her siblings, they all try to figure out a way to finally meet their dad. The three of them never would have been hanging out together if it weren't for this and the differences between them made the book even more interesting in my opinion. Some might say they were clichés (the jock, the musician and the nerd) but I really liked it. When Katie bonded with her father, I thought it was really sweet. And the ending gave me a warm feeling.
I didn't have high expectations after reading a couple of mixed reviews but I'm glad to say that I really enjoyed reading this book! It made me smile when they got themselves into all kind of situations. Overall, it was a sweet, light and heart-warming book.
806 by Cynthia Weil is a predictable book but surprisingly very satisfying read. One of the reasons is, the book is a very quick read and does not tease or test you at any moment.
806 is about a girl Katie who is `struggling with her image, her relationship with her mother who she loves and wants to find out about her biological father. She begins her search only to find she has two more siblings, with whom she then begins a journey to on the road to look for him.
The book follows through very simple lives and road trips of the three siblings, Katie, who prefers to be called as KT, Jesses who wants to be known as more than a jock and Gabe who wishes his future will set him free from his allergies.
By the end of the book everything ties up beautifully, all three siblings evolve as well as their relationship with their family changes for the better. The least involved character I saw was Gade, even Dylan who I loved the most, by the way, has more presence than him. Dylan is the friend who loves KT but she pushes him away and he follows her through the journey just to be with her. (It could have come off and creepy but Cynthia, makes it look like the cutest thing ever)
The story is about having a family within friends and to trust what happens, happens for the best.
At times the dialogues did feel shallow and the story did seem to stay in one place for too long without twists and turns but that's what the book is, it is a light read about life that can be hard and easy at the same time.
I would recommend this book if you like to read something fun and sweet. It will stay with you but not disturb you.
