A fantastic read. Great scholarship and brilliant writing this book should be read by anyone doing politics or interested in the economic history of the USA. I can't say enough good about the book. What I should say is that it read as an exciting story from start to finish. Even though there are different writers on different topics the compelling narrative is always there. How did American Capitalism develop and how is working today.

Of particular brilliance is the first essay on the American Revolution / War of Independence and its connection with taxes, banking and international trade. The evocative picture of the tensions and dynamics that went into the US Constitution will enlighten and give a fresh perspective to anyone no matter how educated on the subject they are.

The essay on the slave planation system of the Caribbean is also as remarkable as it is disturbing. The end of the Slave Trade and Slavery did not end the plantation system but globalized it, spreading its odious suppression of peoples and economies throughout the world. Only with the globalized threat being so pervasive and repellant did the revolt against it fight back so successfully, but never entirely to erase its effects. With a paean to Che Guevara and Chairman Mao this highly readable essay I will recommend to anyone.
