Dying day by Stephen edger.
Kate mathews is in turmoil. She has never forgiven herself for letting the killer of a young detective amy who was sent undercover to catch a serial killer but he slipped through their fingers. The case is reopened a year later. Can kate find the culprit before there are more bodies? Absolutely fantastic read. Loved the story and the characters. I defenetly didnt see that coming. I thought it was someone else. A must read and I would highly recommend this book. 5*.
Brilliant fast paced police procedural thriller.
The second book in the series following Detective Inspector Kate Matthews who is deeply troubled following the death of her young colleague Amy. One year on Kate continues to feel partly responsible for Amy’s death and remains very eager to solve the murder as quickly as possible even though she has been taken off of the case.
Is Kate so damaged that she is reckless and a danger to herself and others? Can she redeem herself in the eyes of her colleagues? Will she get justice for Amy and solve the crime?
Stephen Edger writes really well, keeping the reader interested and on the edge of their seat!
Thank you to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you very much to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of Dying Day this was my first book by Stephen Edger but it definitely won't be my last. I love Kate Matthews character she is very strong minded and determined. This book had me gripped to the end and a twist I definitely did not see coming.
Very atmospheric, the damaged and recovering detective, her underlying and unrelenting guilt over the murder of a woman in her charge. The chase, the misdirection, missed cues, are all pretty standard.
It is a standard dark story, however the characters are more interesting than the story.
There is a more or less satisfactory resolution, and most of the loose ends are tied up.
This book had me up until long into the night a brilliant read you won't want to put down.
A brilliant fast paced book that will have you gripped right from the start.
It took me a while to warm to Kate, but once you do you really get to like her.
A body is found in a car boot near Southampton docks. Kate is ordered not to get involved but when another body turns up, Kate starts to investigate because it brings back too many memories in a previous case when Kate was in London.
Kate has to find the killer before he strikes again. the stakes have never been higher for Kate can she solve the murder?
This is a brilliant book that I loved you have to read it.
I was first introduced to Kate Matthews in Stephen Edgar's previous book and couldn't wait to read this one - it didn't disappoint and I was pleased that he's left her as a slightly edgy, instinctive maverick detective who gets results! She's not the easiest of people to get on with and often alienates others but somehow it makes the story even more readable.
The book is fast paced from the beginning with a good storyline which has more than one strand. You're kept guessing all the way through as the inevitable red herring's add to the intrigue and complexity.
I can't wait for the next in the series!
I am highly disappointed that I read the second book first! I absolutely loved Kate Matthews and this story. I was hooked right away and was sad to find out that this is the second in a series. I wanted to keep reading after the book was done.
This was an enjoyable, fast paced read. Twists and turns kept me hooked until the surprising end.
Serial killings from London to Southampton
Senior Investigating Officer Kate Matthews loses her position in London after a young protege of hers loses her life being the bait in a serial killer case.
So Kate moves to Southampton and is now a Detective Inspector, trying to prove herself again. And she's soon on the trail of another serial killer.
To me this was an okay story but I felt the characters were rather stilted and for me there weren't many surprises throughout the book. It was good. It was readable. It wasn't great and that's too bad.
I received this book from Bookouture through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
Why have I not discovered this author before now? This is book two in the Kate Matthews series and it is a very well written and fast paced thriller. It can easily be a stand alone and features another damaged DI. it was just a bit unbelievable towards the end but there were enough twists to keep the reader engrossed. I would definitely read book three. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.
Dying Day by Stephen Edger. Really did not care much for Kate; she was over the top stubborn and pigheaded and put her fellow officers in great danger. The book moved back and forth between time frames and I felt like I was reading the same passages over and over again. I'm sure many will like the twists and turns but it just wasn't to my liking.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
This is the second book in the series featuring Detective Kate Matthews. The first book in the series ‘Dead To Me’ was published in August of this year (2017). I read, reviewed and loved the first book and I just knew that I would love this book. I was not to be disappointed but more about that in a bit.
Detective Kate Matthews is a feisty and strong female detective, who has been badly mentally scarred by an incident, which lead to a young female detective’s murder. Nobody else could punish Kate as much as she is punishing herself. She carries the memory of what happened round with her everywhere she goes. The family of the female detective all blame her too. Kate Matthews is determined to solve the case and put Amy’s murderer behind bars. This is not an easy task to undertake though because she is not allowed anywhere near the case. At the same time, Kate is involved in another case, which leads to more questions. She is involved in a high speed pursuit and contrary to orders from above, she takes action, which leaves her with a badly injured ankle. At first she is ordered to take some leave and take time to recover but that just isn’t going to happen. So you could say that Detective Matthews is stubborn, headstrong and if she thinks that her superiors are wrong, she has a tendency to say so and/ or to go against their wishes and orders. She has a strong gut instinct, which is not often wrong. If something doesn’t seem or smell right to her then that means that it isn’t. Kate is dedicated to her work and lives, breathes and sleeps police work. She doesn’t have that busy a social life and she has few friends outside of work. Detective Matthews has the respect of most of her colleagues and she is not afraid to muck in to share the workload.
In my opinion, ‘Dying Day’ is just as well written as ‘Dead To Me’ and it is just as addictive. The story hits the ground running and the fast pace is maintained throughout the book. I was hooked on ‘Dying Day’ from the first word on the first page and the book had me in its grip until the last word on the last page. I just had to read on and on to see what would happen next. I didn’t notice how quickly the pages were turning and before I knew what had happened, I was almost a third of the way through the book. I was reading that quickly that it was almost as if the pages were turning themselves. For me reading this book led to just as much of an adrenaline rush as I would get riding on a rollercoaster. There were certainly lots of twists, turns, stomach churning moments and moments where I closed my eyes because I either feared or didn’t want to see what happened next. This book certainly kept my interest and certainly kept me guessing.
In short, I really did enjoy reading ‘Dying Day’ and I can’t wait to read what comes next from this hugely popular author. I would definitely recommend this book and series to others. I award this book 5* out of 5*.
Lots of twists & turns and some interesting characters with a clever enough plot should have made for a higher review than I feel I want to give. I just couldn't get past the very unlikely things that DI Kate Matthews did in the course of a serious investigation. I can allow for poetic licence and often if a book is good enough you don't even notice it. So lots of promise & I would try the author again but only three stars for this book.
Brilliant!! Gripping and full of twists and turns!! I definitely didnt see the ending coming!! Cant wait for another of his books!! Highly recommend!!
While I did not read the first book, this one could have stood on its own. Great tale with many twists and turns.
I received an ARC from NetGalley to read and review. The below is my honest, unbiased opinion. Thank you, Stephen Edger, the publisher, and NetGalley, for allowing me to review.
When the body of a young woman is found in the boot of an abandoned car near the Southampton Docks, Detective Kate Matthews is ordered to stay well away from the scene.
Exactly a year ago, Amy, a junior detective on Kate’s team, was murdered when she was sent undercover to catch a serial killer targeting young girls. Kate never forgave herself for letting the killer slip through her fingers and her team are worried this coincidence might push her over the edge.
When another girl’s body is uncovered days later with similar bruising around the neck, Kate launches an investigation of her own, determined to connect new evidence to the old to catch this monster before more innocent lives are taken…
Mysterious sympathy cards left with the families of the victims finally lead Kate to the twisted individual from her past. But if she’s found the killer, why does the body count keep rising?
What a truly creepy thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed DYING DAY, a name the main character uses to refer to the day her friend, a fellow undercover detective, lost her life while trying to lure a serial killer from hiding. The character development in this one was phenomenal. I felt Kate's pain, heartache, guilt, sickness. This British crime drama is fast-paced, with enough twists to keep you clinging to the book until the very last page. I've come to expect one-sitting reads from this publisher, and so far, they haven't disappointed me. Highly recommended!
This is the second book in the series featurng Detective Kate Matthews. It can be read as a standalone but I think the book can be enjoyed better if you know the background to the characters. Kate is moving on from the events in the last book and is now in Southampton. She was transferred there following the murder of her younger colleague and Kate is still feeling responsible for her death, as she let DC Amy Spence go undercover whilst trying to solve a series of murders. The main thing that is eating away at Kate is that the case was never solved and she in
convinced that all the deaths are connected.
The book is written mainly in the present time but there are also chapters going back six months previous written by the dead Detective and leading up to her death. This book was a fantastic read, there were so many twists and turns that keep you guessing right until the end and what a surprise that is! I gave Stephen Edger’s first book in the series, Dead to Me, five stars and would give this book more if possible. Do not miss reading Dying Day, just leave yourself plenty of time as you won’t be able to put it down. Can’t wait for the next one in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book..
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
I am very sorry to say that I did not like this book. I only finished it because I wanted to give an accurate review.
It was slow to start and and it was told in the point of view of one of the victims and the detective. I felt that it was not going anywhere. It was slow and it was predictable to me.
This is a really well written book. Stephen Edger knows how to keep you in edge of the seat suspense the whole way through. Kate is trying to find a murderer and is determined to solve the case. Short chapters add to the suspense. I read this book in one sitting. I wanted to know what happened. The ending totally surprised me. I had no idea that was who the killer was. I hope there are many more books about Kate.
Great story, great plot. Would read again. Another good author to ad to my list.
