What at treat! This Amish story is the 3rd in the Amish Letters series. I think it could be read as a stand-alone even though other characters (from earlier stories) are referenced in the book. Ivy and Noah are not so typical Amish, and it makes the story an interesting read. I think that Noah needed some sense knocked into him, but the story came to a satisfying conclusion. There was also a "story-within-a-story" that created interest. I recommend it highly.
Ivy Yoder is living in an Amish community. Her best friend and sister, as well as everyone else around her seem to be getting married and starting their families. Ivy is still single and not entirely sure what her future might bring. She loves living in Birch Creek, but she doesn't like being one of the oldest single women there. Her older dear friend, Cevilla asks Ivy to help her Nephew Noah, go through some boxes that had been delivered from her deceased sister's family and was being stored in her attic. Cevilla is a very determined and strong willed woman, and her desire is to push her beloved Noah and Ivy together as she just knows they will make a wonderful couple. Noah is not from Birch Creek, and is quite happy travelling around as an Auctioneer and has no real need for settling down and being in a romantic relationship. Noah and Ivy find a bundle of letters in a box in the Attic and through the letters they read of a romance during Korean war time. When Noah goes back to his family over Christmas, he an Ivy begin writing their own letters, meanwhile both of them are very determined not to fall in love, but not if Cevilla has anything to do with it.
The front of the book has a reference for the Amish words that are used during conversations and it is a handy reference. It is a little bit strange at first to read some of the words using a different language, but it makes sense and it adds a bit of something different to a book. I have never read a christian romance before, nor one of an Amish flavour, but do not let that turn you off if you are neither Christian or Amish. It is really interesting to read about an Amish community and I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters and enjoyed how the author built them during the story. Ivy is very likable and so is Cevilla and Noah. It only took me a few days to read the book, and the last night I was reading, I read way into the early morning hours as I just could not put the book down and I needed to know if Noah and Ivy would finally get their act together (I am not going to tell you, you will need to read it for yourself). This was a really nice romance filled with all the ups and downs and things that stop the main characters being able to be together. Very well written and I was very attached to the characters and even shed a few tears on the final pages. Beautiful story that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good romance.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Words from the Heart is book 3 in Kathleen Fuller’s Amish Letters series. We find ourselves back in Birch Creek following Ivy Yoder after the marriages of her little sister and best friend. Ivy thought she had found the man of her dreams but he didn’t follow through on his promise to write. Now more than a year later, she just can’t get him out of her head or heart. Her elderly friend asks for her assistance going through boxes in the attic and Ivy can’t wait to find a way to get her mind off of lost love.
Noah Schlabach, a traveling auctioneer, returns to Birch Creek to help his favorite aunt clean out her attic in hopes of helping her find lost family heirlooms. He discovers that his aunt has strategically placed him and Ivy in close quarters, going through boxes. They both quickly suspect that matchmaking is afoot.
They discover a box of old love letters and get swiftly caught up in the mystery and story of the young couple during the Korean War. As they solve the mystery of the young couple, they have to come to terms with the feelings that are developing for each other.
Fuller did an amazing job creating characters that were captivating to the reader. It is easy to fall in love with their story.
Ivy has been writing to John King, an Amish man she met in Michigan while she was helping her cousin the previous year. BUT, John only wrote to Ivy once and never replied to any of her letters. She finally comes to the conclusion that there is no reason to try to continue keeping in touch with him.
Cevilla Schlabach is an elderly neighbor to Ivy and her family and she engages Ivy to help her nephew, Noah, to clean out her attic. There are boxes and boxes and boxes of goods from her stepmother's home. Many of the boxes contain crocheted doilies, lots and lots and lots of doilies. But in a few of the boxes are a few treasures that Noah would like to investigate for his auction business.
Cevilla wants to see Noah and Ivy get together and marry. Ivy's mother would like to see Ivy and Noah get together, but Ivy convinces her mother to let her conduct her own life.
Letters weave their way throughout this book. Kathleen Fuller knows the Amish life and the Amish psyche and has brought it to life through her characters. Cevilla is not known for holding her tongue, Ivy is known to be a strong woman in spite of her petite size, Noah is a sweet, unassuming man who loves his aunt. In Words from the Heart, Kathleen has added a love story from the Korean War years and then ties all the letters together with a ribbon of a story that will keep the reader involved from page one all the way through. This is a five star book, with two thumbs up, and a wooden chest to keep your letters in.
My thanks to Thomas Nelson for allowing me to read and review this book.
I received an arc from Netgalley. This book was heartbreaking but had a very nice happy ending. Noah and Ivy are two people you will fall in love with. Their strong faith and encouragement got them through some very rough waters.
Cevillas love story was also heartbreaking and shows how important faith is in a relationship.
Although some parts of the Amish story didn’t quite seem believable I enjoyed this book immensely. Definitely a book I would still recommend.
Any story by Kathleen Fuller is a treat for her readers, and Words from the Heart is no exception. I enjoyed the opportunity to " re visit" Birch Creek, and to read the story of Ivy and Noah as they work their way through organizing the contents of Noah's aunt Cevilla's attic- contents sent to her by her stepmother. Ivy feels left out in Birch Creek as so many friends and family have married and she has not; Noah travels the country running auctions and also has not settled down- so both are unusual amongst their peers. I found it touching to read of their gradually developing friendship as they sift through Cevilla's family artifacts, including love letters exchanged during the Korean War. All the while, Noah tries to make sense of uncomfortable and unsettling medical symptoms that frighten him, and Ivy tries to reconcile herself with the idea of never meeting a husband. During the story, readers are also given the chance to be reacquainted with the Schrocks from earlier books set in Birch Creek. I invite and encourage fellow readers to buy and read Words From the Heart, to find out where Noah and Ivy's friendship will lead.
Kathleen Fuller writes some very sweet Amish stories, and this was one of them. I liked how the main characters mirror the characters of the past, sharing their stories through letters. I also liked that they learned from their elders. :) This is not a heavy read, it's not something that will take long to get through - it's just a nice, cozy story about an Amish relationship. Themes include grief, fear, and depending on others.
Words from the Heart (An Amish Letters Novel) by Kathleen Fuller is a wonderful, delicate, old-fashioned story you will fall in love for.
Everything starts with Ivy. Ivy is a young Amish girl daughter of the bishop of Birch Creek and she lives with her family.
Kind girl, at the beginning of the story she is in love for John. He sends her a first letter promising he will stay in touch but then nothing more.
I love a lot this story thanks also to the entrance in scene of a magical character like the one of Cevilla Schlabach is.
Cevilla is in her 80s and she knows Ivy and her good reputation.
Never married, Cevilla can't be considered a spinster or someone who hasn't never known the meaning of love. She isn't a hard lady, but a lady in grade to filter with wisdom situations and people.
For this reason and because she knows the importance of staying together, a gift for a reason or another life didn't present her, she would want with all herself to "help" her nephew Noah with...Ivy.
Cevilla needs to put some order in the attic of her house where there are wagons of boxes and she asks for some help. The one of Ivy and Noah.
A good excuse this one for creating a good connection between this not yet couple? Yes, maybe, who knows?
In the various boxes analyzed by Noah and Ivy also an old watch and some precious letters. This old letters touched their hearts.
Reading them, they will discover an old love-story, unknown people and characters, plus other surprises as well.
I loved to read this Amish novel so badly because it is very felt, sincere, plenty of love, friendship, kindness, and the beautiful interaction between young and old people means a lot in term of respect and of a culture in grade to communicate without walls or barriers with people of the most diversified ages.
I find in this book genuine, great, good values, with a wonderful and very well built touching story.
Plus I loved the detailed description of Amish life and traditions. The Amish is a German community helpful with all its members, without to add watering mouth sensation when described the so many yummy traditional Amish dishes!
There are some dutch words here and there, but being italian and knowing english I understood very well all that words.
I thank NetGalley for this ebook.
Ivy Yoder meet John King when she was visiting family. She wrote to him and he never returned any letters. She felt hurt. Cevilla Schlabach asked her to help her nephew Noah Schlabach to clean her attic but they had to work together. Noah was a auctioneer . He did not live in Birch Creek. Celvilla was trying to match make Ivy and Noah and they did not want any part of it. As they cleaned the attic together feelings started to stir between them. They would a box of old letters and Celvilla gave them permission to read them together. They were letters from a soldier to Celvilla many years ago when her family had left the Amish. Will Noah and Ivy find love? Or will John King come back and re seal her heart. This is a beautiful story of romance and also a story of lost love. I fell in love with the book. Kathleen Fuller has a way to draw your attention and keep you wanting to read. Great Book.
WORDS FROM THE HEART by Kathleen Fuller. Book 3 "Amish Letters"
Having read the first two was delighted there was another in this great series. Letters when written held so much for a person, not just in communication, also of hopes and dreams. When Ivy finds the letters, it fills her of what another person and that love was written about. Though cleaning out the attic may have been a scheme to match make these two, will it come about. These were a delightful, enjoyable, heart warmer stories . Of forgiveness, not losing hope when dreams are disappointed. Given ARC by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
