Hannah played a prank on her brother that put a lot of events into action. Her mother, Liliane, needs direction. She chooses to follow the Shakers movement. Hannah struggles between embracing this religious movement or trying to have a normal family life.
This was a very good book! I liked the development of Hannah's character and could feel her decisions and struggles.
Hannah Jerram is a happy teen and so is her brother Luke. Their's is a happy existence with their mother, sister and adopted brother Ben. Happy go lucky Luke and his sister Hannah play mischievous pranks on each other all the time but never to hurt each other all in fun. While he is fixing the barn roof one day she takes the ladder away as her latest prank. He calls for it back but she doesn't bring it and he slips on the roof shingles and falls off the roof. In an instant it's no longer a game and though he survives he has excruciating pain when he tries walking on it even after it heals. His bum leg is now shorter than the other and he never forgives her .
The leader of the Shaker religious group shows up in town and many dissatisfied with the hard struggle in their life decide to follow her teachings. The religion causes a frenzy from outsiders that ridicule the followers. One tragedy after another befalls the Jerram family.
Because of a rape taking place I can not recommend this book.
