This was an entertaining and witty story and I really enjoyed it! I thought Robert and Mariah were both wonderful characters. I liked learning about them and their motivations. There were a lot of fun and engaging scenes pulling me in. I thought there was great humor and really good dialogue. They went through a lot of ups and downs but I loved their building attraction as everything played out. There were parts that dragged for me and things felt a bit glossed over but overall, I thought it was a fun and exciting read!
Another great story in the Carlisle line. This one features Robert, the middle brother trying to please his deceased father and alleviate his guilt over his father’s death. As the second son, becoming a successful businessman is the chosen path, pursuit of a partnership in a shipping company the vehicle to make his father proud (from the grave). A partnership in the company is dangled by the shipping company’s owner and father of Mariah, a difficult young woman, who’s father wants her married. Mariah, however, prefers to run her school for orphans, and become the partner in her father’s shipping company. It’s a very well developed, complex plot that makes for a compelling read. Robert and Mariah start out as opposites and enemies, battling an attraction neither wants to acknowledge. The banter and bickering between the two is both entertaining and annoying—all part of the plot development. As they come to know each other better, and acknowledge their attraction, the story becomes even richer and deeper. A delightful book to enjoy thoroughly.
Anna Harrington has the unique ability to weave a story filled with humor and passion and she does it again in her third installment of the Capturing the Carlisles series, As the Devil Dares.
Robert Carlisle will do anything to prove his worth and for him the ultimate goal is to be a partner of Winslow Shipping and Trade. Even if that means playing reluctant matchmaker for Winslow's eldest daughter.
Mariah Winslow has wanted to be partner in her father's shipping company since she was a young girl. But when she finds that her father has invited Robert into the fold, she will leave up to the moniker that Society has labeled her with, "The Hellion".
In a clash a strong wills and even stronger desire, Mariah and Robert will have to make the choice between following their hearts and what they thought they wanted.
Anna Harrington's "As the Devil Dares" is a wittingly funny and slyly romantic which makes it a great combination for a historical romance and an eagerly consumed book to read. I highly recommend this book along with the previous books in this series!
When I am in the mood for an excellent historical romance I know that I need to look no further then one by Harrington. This new installment to the Carlisle series is no exception. This time we get Robert's story. He is hoping to become a partner in Winslow shipping so he teams up with the owner who gives them the task of helping to properly launch his eldest daughter in society in order to be considered. He accepts which ultimately leads to his downfall as he finds himself challenged by Mariah every time he turns around until he finds himself in love with her. This causes him to have to choose between the business and love. This is a wonderfully written romance that really takes you back to the time period while you follow the love story. Extremely well written and honestly a must read for fans of historical romance. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
What I like best about Anna Harrington books are the well-written words. She can set a scene and make it very believable. Both of these characters were well fleshed out. I felt like I understood them and what was driving them. This book is my favorite in the series. Not so much because I like Robert best, but the storyline between Robert and Mariah was the most entertaining to me. I like enemies-to-lovers trope and this was well plotted out. Plus, the cover design is beautiful and I think it captures Mariah completely. I would recommend this to historical fans and am anxiously awaiting what is coming next.
Anna Harrington has made a solid name for herself in historical romance with quality writing and interesting characters. As The Devil Dares, book three in her Capturing the Carlisles series, brought out the fierce competitive side of its hero and heroine, as each sought to achieve success for personal reasons. The unexpected fascination that the leads in this story discovered they had for each other, quickly showed itself to be hampering them from obtaining their individual agendas and pit them against each other.
Wit and angst parlayed well throughout this work as this pair was faced with choices that presented the ultimate quandary of sacrifice for love over ambition. Mariah carried the burden of being misunderstood and underappreciated, as she struggled with the unwanted role of being the compliant woman her father and society expected her to be, even as Robert 's ambition was driven by his own misguided guilt of what he though his deceased father would have expected of him. Ms. Harrington does a great job of remaining true to her characters time period, yet showing them to have aspirations that were forward thinking in spite of the social constraints of their time. The catch and release interactions in this romance will keep readers curious and eager to see what awaits this pair as their attraction plays out. While a slow build up set the stage for this work it was its fast paced ending and character revelations that made this a standout read. Anna Harrington’s adds another intriguing couple to her growing historical romance repertoire in As The Devil Dares.
A fabulous romance with sparks abounding between these two who think they are against each other! I just adored the banter and antics that Mariah and Robert get into when around the other. Very well written with secrets and humor sprinkled throughout. The story keeps the pages turning because you just want to find out how it could all end happily! The secondary characters are lovable and fit right in. You won’t be sorry with this next Carlisle book! This author knows how to keep you intrigued.
Overall: Ms. Harrington’s writing is excellent and the book is a good one.
As always, Ms. Harrington's writing is superb and I have thoroughly read and enjoyed all her books.
This is book 3 in Capturing the Carlisle’s series, which is about the 3 Carlisle brothers, rakes who become respectable after a family tragedy. This is th story of the middle brother Robert Carlisle, whose character we've encountered previously.
I found that this particular story was a little slow going. I liked both the hero (Robert) and the heroine (Mariah). But found the first half of the book was very slow going and the constant arguing between Robert & Mariah to be somewhat overdone, at times even annoying to read. Given the hostility between the characters at the beginning, as their romance blossomed, it seemed to me that their spark or chemistry seemed a little lacklustre and difficult for me to love this couple. Not my favourite of the Carlisle brothers.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Robert Carlisle needs the partnership in Henry Winslow's shipping firm to prove to himself he is worthy to be a Carlisle. Winslow is willing to give Robert the partnership if Robert manages to steer Winslow's daughter, Mariah, through a successful season, culminating in marriage to an acceptable suitor. There are several problems with this: Mariah is known as the Hellion due to her unladylike antics and has not quite been accepted into gentle society; she is not interested in marriage; she has no dowry; and she wants the partnership that Robert has been offered. A good story interwoven with cross-purposes, misunderstandings, past hurts that have left scars, and secrets. I received this book from the publisher.
You can never go wrong reading a book written by the incomparable Anna Harrington! If you love Regency romance, you will absolutely love this book!
Robert Carlisle is the only one of his brothers who hasn't been snatched up in marriage and he is definitely a rake. He wants to prove himself by succeeding in business, so he jumps at the chance to go into a partnership in Winslow Shipping. However, in order to get the partnership, he has to find a proper husband for Winslow's daughter, Mariah, better known as the Hellion for her scandalous escapades.
All Mariah has ever wanted is to go into business with her father. But, he promised her mother that he would make sure that Mariah and her sister, Evelyn, become proper ladies.
Robert doesn't plan to fall in love, but the sparring between him and Mariah leads to just that. Will they be able to put aside their quarreling and find true happiness?
A very enjoyable book, with romance, a wonderful hero and a spitfire of a heroine. Add in a couple of steamy nights between the couple and you have the perfect read! Well done, Ms. Harrington, well done! I love the thought and research that the author puts into her books; you really feel like you are back in the Regency era when you read one of her books
She's fire. He's ice. And, when they get together, there's steam aplenty!
Mariah was my kind of heroine... spirited, forthright, compassionate, altruistic, independent and intelligent. But, she also had a softer, more romantic side. She was a well-rounded, likable character who immediately drew me in.
Robert was strong, smart and sexy. He was a man with a plan and was determined that nothing or no one would get in his way. But, he was also brokenhearted and full of guilt and shame over his father's death, a proverbial "wounded bird". I just wanted to reach through the pages and give him a hug to comfort him. Aaaand, maybe I wanted to sneak in a squeeze of those well-defined muscles, as well.
When Robert sets out to find Mariah a husband, in order to secure a partnership with her father in his shipping company, the battle, the sarcastic banter and the witty repartee begins.
I loved everything about this book. It successfully continued the Carlisle series with all the drama and romance of its predecessors.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Forever (Grand Central Publishing) in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Sorry, this book did not hold my attention, struggled to finish.
This is Lord Robert Carlisle and Mariah Winslow story it is a very well-written book that kept me reading to the end, I know I will be rereading this story.I would recommend this book.I received a copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This is a Must Read !
The story is very engaging, the writing flows and and the dialogue is witty.
The characters have depth.
Mariah and Robert are a match for each other. Beautiful romance in an era where women are not to be heard but merely be the seen . Praise be to the Regency books of Anna Harrington . I love this book. Hard to put down and come back to later .
This is the third book in Capturing the Carlisle’s series, which is about three Carlisle brothers, rakes all, who become respectable after a family tragedy. This is the happily after story of the middle brother Robert whose character we've encountered earlier and whose character is the most complex of the three.
As I said before, Ms. Harrington never fails to draw me into the settings of her stories. She has done so in this telling as well. It's her characters that sometimes I find a bit off-putting and silly. However, in this particular story, I thought she'd shown me a bit more of them and I found the strange "courting" of these two very believable and entertaining.
I was happy to feel the sparks between Mariah and Robert and not just "see" them as in Sebastian's story. Out of all three books I've read, this one is my favorite.
Melanie for b2b
Anna didn't disappoint with giving us Robert Carlisle story. I couldn't wait to see who would break first Robert or Mariah. To have a strong woman willing to fight the rakeshell as hard as he fought is wonderful. Not knowing if it would end happy all around till the end kept me reading and wanting to know would the get everything. I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Mariah is an excellent example of a strong intelligent woman who knows her mind unfortunately she lives in the wrong era. Oh but wait you need to read this book and see how she uses her intelligence. This by far my favorite part of this book. The author's writing skills in this area deserves top marks. She allows the reader to feel Mariah's frustration at being a woman instead of a man. Also, how she struggles to understand how to fit in the era she was born into. Even more intriguing is how she handles Lord Robert.
I do love a frustrated man. Lord Robert fits this the bill. But there is a deeper side to him that no one sees but Mariah and the push pull to their interactions will make the reader laugh out loud, at times want to scream and other times cry.
For me if I lived back then I am sure I would be like Mariah and I would hope with everything I have I could find someone like Lord Robert.
This book deals with families that have lost how to connect with each other, people trying to right a wrong and receiving as well as giving forgiveness.
I give it 4 stars and suggest you pick up a copy to judge for yourself.
I had a hard time getting into this book. I'm not sure, as I like Ms. Harrington's writing and have read her before. I also liked both the hero (Robert) and the heroine (Mariah). But the first half of the book was very slow going for me. I suspect this had something to do with the enemies-to-lovers trope, which is not one of my favorites. Given the enmity between the characters at the beginning, I think it was hard for me to get buy their blossoming romance. However, I found the last half of the book very enjoyable and even moving at times, particularly when Robert and Mariah share their grief over losing their parents. Perhaps the problem in the first half was the pacing.
I really want to know more about Whitby--is he gay? Is he in love with Mariah's sister or even Mrs. Smith? I'm hoping he will get his own book; I hope Mariah's sister does as well.
I absolutely love Anna Harrington's historical romances! As the Devil Dares is the third book in the Capturing the Carlisles series and I believe it is my favorite so far. Who doesn't love a strong-willed hero and heroine whose passions flare in and out of the bedroom?
Robert Carlisle strikes up a business deal with Henry Winslow hoping it is the perfect way to do something that would make his father proud, but the deal has the potential to destroy everything that Mariah Winslow cherishes and has a passion for.
Mariah Winslow known around town as the Hellion bucks what society expects of young women by taking on causes her father doesn't approve of and wanting to work in the family shipping business which is unheard of for a woman. When Robert Carlisle becomes her father's business partner Mariah sees him as the enemy, but soon she realizes they have quite a bit in common and their attraction for one another takes precedent over their differences.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in this great series!
