Gwen Proctor already defeated one monster in her quest to protect her children. But what happens when the ultimate monster, their father, escapes from death row and comes after them all? I loved Stillhouse Lake and couldn't wait to get my hands on Killman Creek to find out how the story ends.
I really liked the approach that this book took of alternating chapters from the perspectives of Gwen, Lanny, Connor and Sam. Stillhouse Creek was entirely from Gwen's perspective and it was interesting to hear what the other characters have been feeling about the whole situation and to get an opportunity to learn a little more about them and get in their heads. However, I didn't enjoy the story as much this time around. Most of the tension and suspense from the first book was gone and now we were just chasing a bad guy. Or multiple bad guys. It's hard to tell. Do we believe that Gwen really had no knowledge about her ex-husband's crimes? That's the main question in this installment. That, and who is out to ruin Gwen and her family?
This was a great conclusion to the series - I thought it wrapped everything up quite neatly, but still had all the aspects from the first book that made it great. I enjoyed that there were different character view points in this book, it was interesting to see what they were thinking. There were several twists that kept you guessing, and the pacing was great. Overall, it was a good read.
Killman Creek is the second exciting psychological thriller in the Stillhouse Lake series written by author Rachel Caine. It is a real roller coaster ride. I would love to read more about these characters. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for the advance copy.
And you thought your ex was bad – Gwen Proctor is trying to keep her children safe from her ex, serial killer Melvin Royal. He’s escaped from prison, and Rachel knows he’s after her. She’s been hiding out at Stillhouse Lake, but she’s grown tired of waiting for Melvin or one of his sick followers to attack. She makes sure her children are safe and then goes on the offensive. With the help of Sam Cade, the brother of one of Melvin’s victims, Gwen plans to find her ex and put him down. When her friends and family begins to disappear, she knows that Melvin will do anything and everything to hurt her, and he’s not going to go down before he destroys everything and everyone who matters to her. This book had one of the creepiest villains I’ve seen in a while, read this one with the lights on
Wow. Just wow....this is one of those books where you start reading and you find yourself still reading while making dinner for the family or trying to find stolen moments to find out what happens next. I love a good thriller and this is easily one of my favorite from the past year. I love how seamlessly the four viewpoints of Sam, Gwen, Lanny and Connor flowed together to tell this riveting story. Will definitely read this one again!
Full review to be published online in mid December.
KILLMAN CREEK is the second book in Rachel Caine’s horrifc and disturbing “Stillhouse Lake” series. These books are about Gina/Gwen, the wife of a serial killer, and her efforts to keep her family together, as well as her sanity in the aftermath of her husbands heinous crimes.
KILLMAN CREEK is an amazing second book in a thrilling, creepy series. This book continues the visceral physical reactions, and broke my heart for every single character in it. I cannot wait to see where Caine takes Gwen next. As it picks up right where book one ‘Stillhouse Lake’ left off, it’s not recommended as a standalone read.
Holy Crap! What a roller coaster ride! This was just gut wrenching. I had about 50 pages left to go and was wondering if there was going to be a third book because there were still so many unanswered questions. Just loved this book and Stillhouse Lake!! I'm going to check out some of Caine's other series.
Whoa! This was even better than the first in the series, which I did not think would be possible. Rachel Caine's characters are brilliantly written, the story is suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat through the entire book - it is unrelenting.
I absolutely loved how much Rachel' broke the characters in book 2. It added to the readers emotional experience. As a mom, this book ripped my heart out.
