Hope Larson's art is perfect, and this story, about a 13-year-old girl who finds herself unexpectedly encountering growing pains in the relationship with her male best friend, is one of the most true-to-life depictions of early teenage life I have ever read. It perfectly captures the essence of long summer days and the frustrations, expectations, and dreams that come with being a teenage. Give it to any teenage girl or adult woman and watch her face light up in recognition as she reads.
I thoroughly enjoy everything Hope Larson does. This was a sweet story about a summer that we have ALL gone through - when you start to get too old for childhood things but are not quite old enough for what's next. You start drifting apart from friends you've known your whole life and making new ones. A sweet story perfect for tweens.
Bina has just exited the 7th grade. She is looking forward to an epic summer with her best friend Austin trying to outdo last year's summer fun index. But that is not to be as Austin is headed to soccer camp. That means Bina has to find fun on her own. Based on the cover I was expecting more from this graphic novel. It's the story of a girl trying to find herself over the summer. It is music heavy, but not as heavy as I expected. Telgemeier does this type of story better.
This book is perfect for libraries where middle grade graphic novel titles like "Smile" fly off the shelves! I read this in one sitting and loved it.
A fun junior level graphic novel. Neat and clean art style here.
