For women who are wondering why they’re being passed over for advancement while other people (especially men) move ahead of them, business coaches Helgesen and Goldsmith lay out 12 habits that could be derailing your career. I’m a big fan of the chapter on “ruminating” because it’s a very healthy reminder on how to move on from mistakes. This is the kind of book you’ll keep on hand to help you through any tough situation.

I loved this book! After getting an advanced review copy on NetGalley, I decided to buy my own copy. This is an insightful, pragmatic and thoughtful guide to career advancement for women. I appreciated that it was empowering and yet professionally written -- no profanity, self-promotion or hyperbole.

This book was very helpful. As a new team leader, I saw many of my habits in the book. It’s given me a lot to think about. I’ll be using this as a resource book.

#NetGalley

The book makes me remind the Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel. The approach is modern and useful. It suggest unconventional techniques to reach the equality at work with a smooth transition.

Every woman who wants to do better and move forward in their career - or life - should read How Women Rise!

I did not find “How Women Rise” to be particularly insightful, though I believe it has merit in this day in age. Personally, it was not the kind of writing that I find aspirational or interesting, though I will say it was very accessible. I would recommend this if someone was specifically looking for a quick read with a few pointers and affirmations about empowerment for women in the workplace.

If you are a professional woman, you need to read this book.

The challenges that women face in the workplace are similar but different from the challenges men face, because women and men are different. And how we approach our careers is different.

I will be coming back and back and back to this book as I continue to move through my career and face different challenges.

Because of this book, I was able to let my Director, and the President of our company know that I want to move up and develop my career - something that I never would have done before. This is just one example of how I have taken this book and applied it to my life, and I know that I will continue to heed Helgesen and Goldsmith's advice.

My career path has changed for the better because of this book!

This is a wonderful empowering book. From the first page it grabs you and does not let you go. For me this book inspires. It does not pretend to have new revelations about the struggles women have in business and in life. It brings to light the habits that we all know we have and teachs how to change and move away from those bad habits towards a life beyond what we are told to be or have. It is a must read for all women and young girls.

I was given advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. This book came right on time for me. I recently started a leadership position, but I've noticed all the skills that had gotten me to that level – perfectionism, people pleasing, prioritizing team loyalty ahead of my own success/recognition,, minimizing my personal achievements to make others look good, taking on all the grunt work all the time, and not leveraging my relationships are holding me back – and that's exactly what this book addresses. Perfect for every woman beginning leadership, or feeling stuck in their career. I'm going to recommend this to my supervisees.

This was a well-developed self-help book that should be a must read for any woman in the workplace. A great addition to the business self-development genre. Lots of specific advice, examples and concrete ways to address the issues presented. Many of the ideas here, I have seen in practice, but did not know how to characterize. The story about the woman who was made partner at her law firm late and then became a member of the promotion committee was a revelation to me. Highly recommended.
