The recipes were ok but not as good as most other vegan/vegetarian cook books I've tried. The photos in my personal opinion didn't make the food look appetizing
Not just a book with delicious vegan recipes, but an explanation of the vegan lifestyle as a whole. Makes it easy for newbies.
Very interesting and helpful book for those looking for vegan inspiration. Here you will find lot of tasty and easy options
Overall underwhelming. While there were some interesting recipes I've seen and would recommend patrons other vegan cookbooks that celebrate vegetables more and in a more wholesome way. Some of these recipes were overdone and overly complicated.
The publisher was kind enough to provide me with a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own and honest.
In 2015 I went vegan for my own health. Along with the amazing health benefits I also discovered the wonderful feeling of living compassionately and having less of an environmental impact. I mention this because I am vegan for my health first, unlike many (most?) that are vegan for ethics, so when it comes to a vegan cookbook my priorities might be different than someone who just wants to eat cruelty-free.
There are two main things I look for in a vegan cookbook; how many processed ingredients do they use and how many pictures are there. For me I need to see the recipe to be enticed to make it. No picture means I'm most likely going to skip over it and move onto something I can "see" myself making. For me this book just didn't have enough pictures. I would say that only 1/4 of the recipes have pictures to go with it. There are some, like the mac and cheese, that have drawn me in but for the most part if there were more photos I probably would have tried more recipes. The second part for me is how many processed ingredients do their recipes use. This is where this cookbook gets better for me. There are some recipes that use vegan mayo, vegan cheese, or oils, etc. but for the most part they are whole-food, plant-based, and oil free. Most of the recipes that do include oil I easily omitted as they are used for putting in the frying pan before adding the other ingredients. For the recipes that include fake meats and other processed foods, they can easily be treats instead of every day meals. I also like how the recipes use natural sweeteners and no salt. Overall I did like this cookbook and the recipes I did try, however, I feel like more pictures would have made me try even more and sold me on making it a permanent resident in my kitchen.
I am posting my review here, but not online. I didn't really like this cookbook. I prefer a photo of every recipe. The ebook wasn't navigable. I didn't like most of the recipes. So, it is a 2 for me. Perhaps other people like it more though.
A great collection of recipes for those who have been vegan a long time, or are interested in trying new recipes. Great addition to any public library.
I've been a longtime fan of Victoria Moran's and "The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook" introduced me to another great author, JL Fields. The recipes are easy to follow and yield delicious results. The pictures make one's mouth water. As a vegan, I noticed that many of the greatest plant-based experts/authors endorsed this book and with good reason. Highly recommended as an essential part of every plant-based/vegan cookbook library.
A beautiful well organized cookbook for all vegans and people interested in going plant based. I loved the easy to follow recipes and the suggestions. Each recipe is a delight and you will enjoy adding this cookbook to your collection. I will be adding a hard copy as this is a cookbook for this vegan to keep and savor.
Great cookbook for Vegans. Had a few new ideas and that's not easy to come by with all the other Vegan recipe resources.
Cookbooks are really hit or miss with me and this one was a miss sadly. It mostly has to do with the set up. I'm someone who likes the recipes in the front and then anything that are pantry staples or other info at the back since I look at cookbooks basically just to find new recipes. I definitely think someone would enjoy this though especially if they are like me and starting their vegan journey or has been vegan for years.
I am not a vegan and I am not turning into a vegan. But I do eat vegan a lot. I think that healthy eating is a very important step into being a better version of ourselves. And if veganism isn't in your budget or posibilities, eating vegan and adding some recipes of the sort will of course help to improve both your health and the world.
So of course, this book is very important in the sense that it educates you on veganism and gives you recipes.
BUT... it was really slow at the start. If you're going to become a vegan you may enjoy this book because it will fill you with information about the topic. On the other hand if you came to this book looking for the recipes (like I did) you'll be confronted with tons of information and even more while reading the recipes.
The recipes are really good. It was just the packaging that I found a bit tedious to go through. Overall I think this is a really good book but I was not the best reader for it.
**I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review** This cookbook has a lot of really great things going on. For the most part, all of the recipes are created with easy to access/find ingredients. There is nothing more frustrating than reading through a vegan cookbook and not being able to find all of the ingredients for most of the recipes, so this is a huge plus for this book. This book also begins with a large section introducing the reader to veganism and dispelling myths about eating a vegan diet. This information is presented in more of a 'do your best' voice than a 'preaching' voice which I feel will make it more inviting to a larger audience and easier to approach for vegans and non-vegans alike. This book also has a really unique feature they've titled 'Coaching Corner' with different tips and tricks throughout the book and alongside recipes. It's a great feature and it adds a lot to the overall value of the book. On a bit more of a negative side, I really wish that there were more photos included through the book. I'm a visual person and love cookbooks to be filled with photos. Also, for many of the breakfast recipes, pre-made/processed sausages are recommended. I'm just not really one for all of the processed vegan 'fake' meat. And, I'm sure the printed version of this doesn't have this issue, but the formatting of my ipad/kindle version of this book is a bit 'off' things don't quite line up and indentations and some of the numbers don't seem to fall where they're supposed to. Overall though, I think this would be a great addition to any kitchen!
I had never heard of this author before, but I decided to review the book anyways because I always enjoy discovering new plant-based cookbooks. Unfortunately, I did not like this cookbook at all.
I did not enjoy the "Coach Corners" sections and felt there were far too many. The ones I did read were not very helpful, but rather pushy and preachy. I found only four recipes that I might consider making, as most of the other recipes call for oil or faux meat or cheese products which I do not use. Also, I feel many recipes are too time consuming for anyone wanting to cook dinner quickly after work.
This is a really great cookbook. It felt like it was geared for a beginning vegan and had great explanations about the vegan lifestyle as well as information about the new foods lots of new vegan's will encounter - especially grains and butter. The recipes were mostly very straightforward and simple, some with ideas on how to prepare ahead. There were a lot of vegan cheeses and meats in the recipes, so if that's not your thing be prepared to make some substitutions. Also really helpful were the call out boxes called "Coaching Corner" which provided helpful hints and facts about the food in the recipes. The only downfalls I saw were there weren't as many pictures as I wanted and I wanted more detailed information on tofu.
This introduction to the vegan lifestyle compiled by two renown vegan chefs is a wealth of information and recipes for aspiring vegans. The book is like a course in how to be vegan. The book is a compilation from various the points of view of people who have done one on one coaching, who run vegan stores and who have different reasons for being vegan: from health issues, to trend followers, to animal rights activist. The recipes vary from the simple and quick, to the complex and complicated and range from daily fare to dinner party fare. There is a lot of input on substitutions to be used to make recipes vegan. Since their approach is to introduce new converts there is a lot of emphasis on the new processed vegan foods. Since my son is a beginning vegan I know that this approach has appeal to him as I see him gravitating towards the ready-made vegan offerings. For the best utilization of this resource, a print copy would be preferable to an e-book copy.
Love this cookbook! The intro is wonderfully written and helpful for people who are not used to cooking vegan foods. These recipes are wonderful and I love using this cookbook!
Well written overall and filled with some in depth research.
Overall expensive and time consuming recipes to make. Didn't love the coaches corner clogging up most of the pages either.
Thank you for allowing me to review this cookbook.
The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook is not just a cookbook--it's a handbook on the vegan lifestyle and way of life. The recipes (from a variety of cooks, chefs, and authors) range from the complex to the simple. Eating vegan shouldn't require an advanced cooking or nutrition degree, and there are plenty of recipes for the beginner. More experienced cooks will enjoy the complex recipes.
Loved the colorful cover on this book! It's what captured my attention along with just becoming Vegan in Oct 2017.
That being said.... this is a colorful vegan cookbook filled with many wonderful recipes!
I can't wait to try some of these and hope my family loves them!
