Sylvie has not been back to her home town of Conley since her best friend Victoria was murdered, until her mother’s death. With her newborn daughter in tow she begins to clear her mum’s house out. She runs into Victoria’s parents who tell her there’s a documentary being made trying to shine some light on Victoria’s murderer.

The story is told from Sylvie and Sam’s view points, with chapter interspersed with flashbacks from 1995. I think this is third book I’ve read lately that has some aspect of ‘true crime’ in it. Sam, a former journalist, is looking for Victoria’s murderer and making a documentary in the process. It’s classic amateur detective trying to solve a murder stuff, I didn’t really get a psychological thriller vibe from it although it’s still an enjoyable read.

The characters were well rounded and individual from Sylvie, the neurotic new mum, to her old friend Michelle who was a little weird and creepy at times.

I really enjoyed the flashbacks. I liked getting to know a young Sylvie and Victoria who frankly was not that nice a person, but she really reminded me of girls from when I was a teenager.

Unfortunately even though the story started off so promising, the ending fell a bit flat and predictable.

A fantastic read that will have you whizzing through the pages to an ending that is both brilliant and satisfying. I loved the twist in this book and look forward to more from this author.

I really liked the idea of this story. Sylvie and Victoria were best friends. Victoria is murdered and Sylvie disappears. Years later Sylvie comes back to tidy up her mums house after she dies. What did happen to Victoria, how did she die? The book slowly reveals the answer. The plot is good. I just felt that it was a bit slow and more could have been written about the characters involved.

This book was filled with suspense, with a twist at the end of this book that I never, ever saw coming. It was well written, with twists and turns. The only thing I do want to say is that it was a little to long and slow moving in the beginning. But all in all I enjoyed it and love when I am totally surprised at the end of the book. Trust me on this. You will never be able to know how Victoria died. If you read the blurb on the book, then you know that Sylvie and Veronica are best friend's most of their lives and then at 15 years old Victoria is found dead in the water near where they live and at the time it happens her killer or how she died is never resolved. Then this book jumps to twenty years later when Sylvie, who is married and has a child named Victoria which I assume is for her best friend, comes back to her home town because her mother died and has to clean up the house so she can sell it. Sylvie's life changed when she was a teenager. Victoria (her best friend) was murdered and her father died shortly afterwards. These events resulted in her leaving her home town and living with an aunt after she could no longer get on with her mother.

Fifteen years on, married with a baby, she comes back to clear out the family home after her mother's death. Desperate for sleep due to a fretful baby, the discovery that her mother lived in squalor, old memories and now a documentary maker wanting to look into Victoria's death she struggles through her days.

The story is told from the perspective of the present day and of the time around Victoria's death.

I must admit to struggling a bit with this book. I didn't find any of the characters very likeable - or even dislikably fascinating -so I really wasn't engaged enough to care all that much. I was rather surprised by the revelation at the end, but even that couldn't raise this above three stars for me.

I'm sure there are many who will enjoy this book but it was not for me. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Great read! Great suspense! This is my first book from Sarah Wray and I really enjoyed it. Pace was a little slow in the first chapters but it soon gets unputdownable.

Things are only complicated when a man, Sam, shows up in town to film a documentary about Victoria's death in hopes of finally solving the case.

The story was told in the third person point of view, with alternating chapters of the past and the present. Sylvia was the main character, but Sam had a few chapters devoted to his story.

This was well written, and the town and characters all seemed cold and dreary. It was a slow paced book, and not a lot happened. While it wasn't one that I wanted to read in one sitting, I was curious as to what had really happened to Victoria.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping read. It was full of twists and turns that I certainly didn't see coming. I couldn't put it down and just had to see how it ended, which certainly wasn't disappointing! I will definitely look out for more books by this author.

This book captured my interest from the first page, and I found it very easy to get in to. The story was perhaps a slow burner as they say, but the storyline was compelling and I had to keep reading and reading. I found myself mulling over which of the characters could have killed Victoria any why. I had two possibles in mind, and it wasn't either of them, so the ending was quite a suprise.
I enjoyed this book, and would definitely read from this author again.

Twenty years ago, teenagers Sylvie Armstrong and Victoria Bland were best friends. Almost inseparable.  Until Victoria’s body was found in a nearby lake.  Shortly after, Sylvie’s dad passed away, and she was sent to live with her Aunt.  She has never spoken of that time, and has never been back.

Twenty years is a long time.  Now Sylvie has returned to clean up the house after her mother died.  Sam Price, a film maker, has also arrived in Conley, and wants to do a documentary on the mysterious death of Victoria.  No one was ever found guilty of the crime, and a true-crime website has re-awoken this mystery.  Sam is going to stir everything up again.  Victoria’s mother is thrilled.  Not too many other people share that feeling.  For Sylvie, the memories will bring heartbreak, and she will have to decide whether she can live with a secret, or risk everything to share it.

First, I loved this book.  It kept you enthralled, and was really hard to put down. Thankfully the writing was smooth (if a little slow paced), but a real easy read.  The author told the story from Sylvie’s point of view in the past and the present, with an occasional chapter from Sam’s perspective.  This brought all the characters into focus. Speaking of the characters, all of them have a few questionable traits that add to the mystery.  The twist at the end was wonderful.  A real surprise.

Well, that was fun!  Going to have to read more of Sarah Wray’s books.

Prepare to start reading, only to look up hours later and wonder where your afternoon has gone. This is one gripping and utterly unputdownable psychological thriller!

This was a semi- decent read. Nothing that will blow your socks off but a good way to spend the afternoon with. We meet Sylvie, who when she was 15, her best friend was murdered . After Sylvie's mom passes away, she goes back to her hometown of Conley and where the murder is getting back in the news. A podcast has reopened the case of Victoria and Sylvie wants nothing to do with it. You kind of get the feeling that Sylvie can't be trusted as a character . Which is to throw ius, as readers, off. Unfortunately , this thriller didn't have the twists and turns I like but I did enjoy the ending . That was well done. An OK read but not great and most importantly , not horrible either.

Her Best Friend is told from the perspective of Sylvie in the present and past and from Sam, who is making a documentary about Sylvia’s best friend Victoria, who was murdered when she was 15.The case was never solved. Sylvie returns to her hometown after a 20 year absence to take care of her recently deceased mother’s estate. She brings her infant daughter, Victoria, with her.
There are many interesting and complex characters that make this story flow smoothly and engages the reader. However, the characters’ personas are not what they seem to be and that is what makes this story so intriguing. The author also effectively places her characters in situations that might provide clues to what happened to Victoria, but just as quickly those clues are left by the wayside.
This is a captivating read and I look forward to other books by this author.

A teenage girl goes missing. Fast forward through the years and the story is told from both perspectives, the teenage girl and her best friend years after the event. I enjoyed the change of storytelling and importantly did not pick the ending. I will be keeping an eye out for others by this author.
