On the night of graduation, Vale and her boyfriend are in a car accident. While she is fine, he is in a coma. Vale goes to the hospital everyday and reads to him, when his parents allow her in the room. Everyone is pushing Vale to continue living her life, as opposed to staying only at the hospital. After meeting her brother's playboy frat brother, Slate, she begins to take the steps to go away to college and make new friends. While she will not move on from her boyfriend, Vale finds that she has feelings for Slate.
This is a tradition new adult book. I was not a fan of how Slate's promiscuous ways were addressed. I was vaguely offended by Slate's male chauvinism, but I think it is a trope of the genre. This read more like the YA version of an adult romance novel...one with a muscled man in a ripped shirt on the front. This read alot like Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster

Vale has always loved Crawford but when he is an accident and falls into a coma her family pushes her to move on. Vale decides she will attend college and she connected with Slate, a boy with a bad reputation that may win over her heart. But can she give her heart to a one boy when it may still belong to another?
I've been a fan of Glines's books since "Breathe" and this one just didn't work for me. I never warmed up to Vale. She never went beyond being a basic main character. Slate never made up for his bad boy-ness. Neither character felt like they had much growth. Plus, the surprise twist felt like it came to late in the story and didn't really add anything. Fans of Glines will want to read this book but they may be disappointed.
I was very pleasantly surprised with this book. I didn't think I would like an Abbi Glines book after the Sea Breeze series, but she blew all of my expectations with this book! I was so impressed and surprised with the twist in the middle. It was absolutely amazing. I felt like I knew how the book would end, and then she threw a wrench in all of my predictions. Truly I was amazed by this book. At first, I thought this would be another romance that was predictable and had a male character that was a pathetic meninist, but no, actually both the characters were endearing in their own ways. I do think it ended a bit too soon. I think there was a lot more development that could have happened at the start of Part 2. The entirety of Part 2 was too short, but I really enjoyed the entire book.
The blurb really caught my eye and I had never read this author before so really wanted to dive in when I was offered the chance to read.
This book was sort of beautiful and tragic at the same time. Young love, being with someine for a long time and then feelig a bit lost and helpless without them. But life carries on. ...and then, BAM.....plot twist! Never saw that coming!
I'm so glad I read this book and now this author. Will be going to look at her back catalogue.
I read this book very quickly over the course of a couple days. It would have been quicker if I wasn't busy during these few days.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not to say that I didn't have any issues with it or that other people wouldn't. But I can see past the issues because I loved the story and the relationship.
I have a full review going up on Saturday, March 31st, on my blog. I'll go a little more in depth with my thoughts there.
I absolutely loved this book. The first half of this book was really interesting and I felt it was very real. Having your boyfriend in a coma and having to learn to move on would be hard. I felt like the feelings that Abbi Glines portrayed through this part of the book felt very true to a real life situation. Then we reached the second half of the book and there was a plot twist that I absolutely didn't see coming. I had to put my phone down from the shock of it all. From the there the story takes a different turn but I loved it just as much as I had loved the first half. I enjoyed it so much that I have already preordered myself a finished copy.
This novel was not clean in romance or language and For being a YA novel that is disappointing at best. The story line was OK and I liked the alternating chapters of cake and skates persoectives. I also liked the plot twist in the middle. This would have been so much better had the language been cleaned and the sex not to be included.
I just couldn't get into this book and I thought the blurb sounded interesting too.
Rating: 3.5 Stars
I have now read 28 books by Abbi Glines, and I keep coming back to her, time after time, because she fills a certain reading need of mine. Though this book was a lot lower drama than her previous books, it still had many of Glines' signature elements, which never fail to delight me.
•Pro: One of my favorite things in this book was the family focus. Vale was the youngest of five, with four protective older brothers and loving, present parents. I really enjoyed my time with the McKinley family, and was glad Glines shared so many of their family moments with us, The way the Mckinley family welcomed Slate in his time of need tugged on my heartstrings, and I was happy knowing he had a support system.
•Pro: Slate was quite the interesting character. He had a reputation, but there was really so much more going on beneath that. Between his backstory and the lovely relationship he shared with his uncle, I really grew to like him a lot.
•Pro: Underneath it all, this was a story about self growth and the belief that we can grow and change. Vale had to face that she was not the same person she was before the accident, and after dealing with ill uncle, Slate realized that he wanted more from his relationships.
•Pro: After a traumatic event, many people will reevaluate their lives, and Vale recognized that her perfect relationship wasn't so perfect. In fact, she realized that she was lost in the relationship, and this is something that does happen to some. She spent so many years being Crawford's girlfriend, she forgot about her own wants and needs. I thought her struggle was very genuine and I was both happy and sad for her, when she reached her resolution
•Pro: I thought the twist was interesting. I kept thinking back to the "before" part of the book, to look for clues. There are actually a lot of things I would discuss with you right now if this was book club, but since we have not all read the book I will just say, it was a very intriguing approach, which I enjoyed.
•Con: The ending seemed a little rushed. It was sweet, but everyone knows how greedy I am about endings.
•Pro: Glines made me feel a bunch of things, and I even cried a little. That's always something I am looking for when I read a book.
•Pro: I don't know if it was tongue-in-cheek or unintentional, but I think Glines acknowledged her love for odd names via a character in this book.
Overall: A touching journey of growth and change with a sweet romance and a surprising twist.
Ok, let’s start off with remembering what my blog is called. Honest Reviews. Ok here we go…
To say I was excited to read this book was an understatement. I absolutely LOVE Abbi Glines. Some of my favorite books are hers, I still have a Rush Crush. But this book was almost too hard to read. Oh and by the way there are spoilers in the post! This book has two parts to it. The first part starts off with two kids being in love since they were 6 and then getting in a car wreck on graduation night and the boy ends up in a coma. Ok, so there is where the book was halfway interesting. She decides to go on to college and move on from her boyfriend that has been in a coma for a month, and then she falls in love with another boy ladada. Part TWO happens and everything is reversed. She is the one in the coma and the boyfriend is the one who has moved on. This book made absolutely no sense to me at all. It was like two small novellas crammed into one book. It moved to fast and lacked a lot of details. I am kind of disappointed in Abbi Glines.
I received this book as an ARC for a honest review.
Ok so i struggled with this one. I'm not a huge fan of romance and this is why, this story left me confused and the characters were annoying to me.
Such a lovely book written from the view of Vale, who is trying to come to terms with her long time boyfriend, Her boyfriend remains in a coma, as a result of a car collision. This is a well written, quickly read book with good character development, all who show how difficult life can be at 18, when adult decisions need to be made. I won't give the ending away, however, there is bitter with the sweet. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a great feel-good, yet set in sadness, read. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC for an honest opinion.
While this book was well-written and had it's moments, it ultimately wasn't the book for me.
"Life tosses you things you're not expecting. This won't be the first big hurdle in your life. What you have to learn is that you're strong enough to live anyway."
"Life had dealt me some difficult cards, but I was going to find my own path now."
As She Fades is a consuming and completely unexpected love story. Imagine having everything you want at your fingertips. All your hopes and dreams are about to come true, until one fateful moment. One moment that will forever change your life as you know it. What you know and what you think you wanted are suddenly different. How do you accept this new truth? How can you move on???
As She Fades sucked me in from the very first page. I was intrigued by Vale's story and was in awe of her devotion to Crawford. She was selfless and stood by his side waiting for him to wake up despite how dire things were looking. However, this devotion came at a cost. Vale forgot how to live and was stuck. The last thing she ever planned on was meeting Slate. Slate is her total opposite in every way. And as much as she should stay away, she can't help but feel the pull towards him. As their friendship progresses, Vale starts to see the things that she is missing out on and remembers what it's like to live. And just when you have an idea of where things will go for Vale and Slate, the rug will be pulled out from them, giving way to one of the craziest twists I have ever read...
As She Fades is fresh and has a very unique story-line with a Wizard of Oz quality to it. Vale's story is consuming and will pull at your heart. It will have you wondering what is right and what is wrong? What is real? What you would do if you were in her place? Her story is one of moving on and self discovery. It is a story of finding love in a most unexpected place.
I couldn't get enough of Vale and Slate together. Their friendship was so real and honest. They knew the score from the very beginning and seeing them both change was pretty special. Their pull to each other was undeniable and had me aching for more.
My only complaint was the ending. I was left wanting more. I was longing for an epilogue or maybe just one more chapter to Slate and Vale's story. I mean, after all the ups and downs, after all they went through...I just feel like there needed to be more.
Overall, I thought As She Fades is a very good story. I fell in love at page one. I loved the characters and the story. I was utterly consumed and could not put this book down. It was a great read to spend the day getting lost in.
I loved this book. Not surprising since I love all of Abbi's books
Abbi Glines has done it again. As She Fades is the perfect YA novel and you'll never guess the ending! 5 stars!
As She Fades is like a rollercoaster. You're riding along smoothly and you think you have everything figured out and then the bottom drops out from under you, shattering everything you thought you knew. And to be honest, this might be my favorite Abbi Glines novel to date just for its' uniqueness. Plus, Slate is definitely my favorite of her male leads.
The story starts out simple enough, Vale and her boyfriend Crawford get into a major car accident on the night of their high school graduation which leaves Crawford in a coma and Vale sitting vigil in the hospital every day for five weeks. There she meets Slate Allen, a frat brother of her older brother Knox, who is there to spend time with his cancer-riddled uncle. Vale doesn't want to like Slate. She knows his type - the slick, charming, manwhore type and yet as she's shown a different side of him she begins to live again and realizes that her relationship with Crawford wasn't so perfect after all.
As Vale starts college and begins to bring normalcy and routine back into her life she's no longer able to deny her growing attraction to Slate. But Slate's not the relationship type and Vale still has Crawford to think about.
Just as Vale and Slate begin to give into their feelings WHAM, part two starts and turns the entire story inside out. Forget everything, it's like you're reading a completely new story that makes sense but at the same time doesn't; like an alternate reality.
Some may not like the way this book is plotted with the transition between parts one and two but I actually thought it was well written. The whole story is a departure from the author's other novels and I really loved it. While some of her other novels blend together with their similarity this one will stay with me, haunting me.
My only issue with this book was where in the blurb it says, "Then, Crawford wakes up . . . with no memory of Vale or their relationship. Heartbroken, Vale opts to leave for college and move on with her life." I kept waiting for that but without giving any spoilers away, that's not the way the book is plotted. I don't know if the blurb was written that way to be purposefully deceptive, but its' a little misleading. But either way, it doesn't really affect the beauty of the book inside.
Overall, I'm so glad I read this book and I definitely recommend it. The twists and turns were perfect and I couldn't wait to see how it ended, and the ending was satisfying.
This one pulled at my heart strings. The plot twist took me by surprise. I loved Vale and Slate and their chemistry together.
OK so I read the summary of this book and definitely wanted to read it but now that I am done, I have realized the summary was not correct. I liked the book a lot, Vale was a great character, loving, sweet and had a big heart. I loved her big family and initially, her relationship with her longtime boyfriend Crawford who was in a coma after they were in a serious car accident. Slate was a obviously a player, who changed which was great as well. The whole first half of the book was sweet. But then there was a big twist in plot and it really threw me off. I guess the second half of the book was the real part? Actually I am still not entirely sure....I liked both part was even though I finished it, I am still not sure which part was the REAL life part and which part was a dream. Regardless, I love Abbi Glines and I have read may of her books. I enjoyed this one even though it was different than the others I have read. Thank you NetGalley!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved every second of this! I am definitely going to be reading more Abbi Glines now. Her writing just works perfectly for me. What a beautiful touching story with an unexpected twist. I could not put this book down for the last two hours and finished the whole second half. Love love love!!
