Hellbent by Gregg Hurwiz is the third novel in the No Where Man series.
I am so enthralled with these books I read Hellbent in 24 hours!
Mesmerizing action...well, there are no words to describe just how incredible this series of books are.
MUST READ!
Five golden stars!!
This is the story of Evan Smoak: former orphan who was taken into a covert government agency at the young age of twelve. There he is trained in spycraft. Now, disillusioned, he’s fled the program and leads a different life in a fortified LA condo. Now, he’s the last resort for the desperate. Call him at 1-855-2-NOWHERE and he simply asks “Do you need my help?”. He saves them from whatever peril they’re in.
After the program is shut down, former Orphans are being systematically eliminated by a former Orphan and childhood friend of Evan’s – Charles Van Sciver. Someone is ordering this and is particularly targeting Evan because he knows something. After his mentor is eliminated, he is left with a simple task, to find the last Orphan protégé and protect them from Van Sciver.
New characters are introduced and past characters are developed a little further. This allows us to see a human side of Evan. This book is fast paced and full of surprise plot twists and turns.
Love these books! I was so sad when Jack died, but so glad that he left a package for Evan to take care of. I think Joey is my favorite supporting caracter so far. She super smart, sassy and spunky. I hope this series continues...really want to read more!
Another Amazing book in this series! The suspense is endless and had me flipping the pages fast! I highly recommended this series to all of my thriller fans.
A very different read for me. Very enjoyed reading. The story is had a lot of moving parts a must keep up with all the characters involved.

it was amazing
The Avenging Angel is back! Evan Smoak returns with this third hell raising novel. Hop on this fun roller coaster of a ride in which "Orphan X" attempts to avenge the death of his trainer and "father" John Johns. Although best to read the books before ... this third novel has enough backstory to be enjoyed as a standalone. Evan was trained as an assassin by the government ... and fortunately remained a "human" thanks to John Johns. Ever since leaving the black ops program he has been hunted down numerous times with the attempt to terminate his person and his knowledge of the program. Another relentless and thrilling read that can't be missed. I cannot wait for Evan Smoak's next adventure .. and his unlikely target? Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to gobble-up this desert!
The Nowhere Man Is Back
Orphan X, Evan Smoak, is confronted with a new challenge in Hellbent, one so far out of his normal existence that even his instinct fails him. He must deal with finding, then losing, his lifelong mentor, Jack Johns, while at the same time learning to accept a new responsibility, one for which he is ill prepared. In this third book of the series, Orphan X is juggling three things at once: Trying to find and eliminate the rogue Orphans who have killed Jack and are now trying to kill Evan, a plea from a father who wants The Nowhere Man to prevent his son from getting involved in a violent gang, and the biggest problem tasked to him as a last request from Jack, protecting a 13 year old girl who has flunked out of the Orphan program and is facing her own elimination.
The first two problems Orphan X plans to deal with as he always deals with problems, search them down and eliminate them. The third presents a different problem, how to deal with a young, strong-headed human being who is way more accomplished than Evan in some ways. How to interact with others was never part of Evan’s training, and his awkwardness in dealing with this exceptional young lady is another barrier for him to overcome.
Gregg Hurwitz has woven all three together in another thriller that reaches into your gut and pulls at your heart strings at the same time. Read on as Evan deals with his enemies, his conscience, and his doubts. An exciting read.
I received a free advance copy of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
A story that pulls you in and wants you to read more. Action packed and moves at a good pace. Worth reading.
Evan Smoak, once part of a deep government “assets” program has broken free, gone rogue and flamed that last spark of humanity into a quest to help those who need him most. He is also a man on the run from the very agency he once served and the big X on his back is neon orange. Every Orphan ever trained is out to take him down and end the legend of Orphan X, including an old rival, the new head of the Orphan program, the only orphan to match his skills.
When a voice from his past, one he thought long dead calls to give him one last assignment, it is his humanity that will do all he can to free his mentor’s last student from the clutches of the program. To do so will mean facing down his greatest and most dangerous foe, Van Sciver, a soulless monster who will stop at nothing to end Evan’s life.
HELLBENT by Gregg Hurwitz takes us back into a world where no one can be trusted, emotions could be both a sign of weakness and strength and one man will finally understand that no man can truly survive without a cause worth fighting for.
Overflowing with action, the battle of good versus evil rages at full tilt as Evan Smoak embraces both his trained talents and his emotional awakening in order to save one young recruit from the life he has led. A powerhouse read that focuses as much on the strength of its characters as it does over-the-top action and suspense.
I didn’t think Gregg Hurwitz could make Evan Smoak’s story any more intense, but he has raised the bar even higher with HELLBENT! If only that phone number really existed! Holding out for a hero? Wait no more!

Hellbent book three in the Orphan X series is a full blown adrenaline, thrill ride. Evan's father figure/mentor Jack dies at the hands of Van Schriver and the remaining Orphans but tasks Evan with one last mission- get the package. The package just happens to be a sixteen year old girl who washed out of the Orphan program and has been on the run ever since. With an intense focus, Evan goes after Van Schriver but finds he cannot stash the girl instead she becomes friend and family. A call comes in on the Nowhere line so now Evan needs to run two missions. With nonstop action and its clever cat and mouse games, the book kept me on the edge of my seat and left me totally addicted to this series. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
I received a free copy of Hellbent by Gregg Hurwitz through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the third full-length novel in the Orphan X series. The government is still hunting Evan Smoak, a government assassin who decided he would rather know he was killing bad guys instead of trusting the government to make that determination. Evan is waiting for his next call, the one where someone desperately needs his help. However, the call Evan receives is from his mentor, his father-figure, the man who has always been the one to help Evan. It’s too late for Evan’s mentor, but Jack Johns has one last mission for Evan - retrieve the package. In carrying out Jack’s last request, Evan becomes embroiled in saving other orphans both from the program and from his boyhood acquaintance. When the violence winds down, and the tale winds up, Evan has a new mission.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next. If you like espionage/assassin themed thrillers, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy this series as well. Start at the beginning with Orphan X; this is great for binge reading!

More incredible action from Orphan X. Again the author started multiple plot threads which seemed totally unrelated, yet he tied them together as the story developed. The conspiracy turned out to be even worse than expected, and I’m really looking forward to the next in the series!
When you find yourself ripping through all three books 📚 in a series in five days, the author might just be onto something. And, Indeed, with the Orphan X series, Hurwitz has managed to deliver three solid, action-packed thrillers one right after the other and his writing appears to be getting tighter with each new novel in the series.
If you are just finding this series with Hellbent, you will discover that The Nowhere Man was one of the so-called “Orphans” - men and women discovered at early teenage years and trained to become invincible assassins/ black ops operators par excellence. Evan Smoak, the Nowhere Man, Left the program, going rogue, underground, lending his awesome services to those in need of help, asking only that they repay him by giving his number to someone else in need of help, paying it forward so to speak. He has amassed a limitless supply of funds in secret accounts, safe houses, and a bat cave like condo in a tower where he pretends to be Bruce Wayne while secretly leading a double life, saving the day.
This novel doesn’t focus on helping others so much as it is an all-out battle with other all-powerful multi-talented Orphans to try to save the youngest newest Orphan. It’s sort of a battle between the super-powered mutants in the tv series Heroes.
It is action-packed from beginning to end, hard to put down, and just really a ton of find to read. There are lots of thrillers out there, but this one is really well done.
Many thanks to the publisher for providing a copy for review.
At least as good as the first book. The character development was fascinating to watch as the ice-cold assassin and the smart-mouthed teenager matched wits. As a counterpoint, some other characters didn't grow at all. The action was fast-paced and driven by more realistic emotions (love, revenge, greed, fear) than in the second book. I'm happy to say that Hurwitz left the door open for more Orphan X books.
This was a great read. I can't wait for the next one.
Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as an off-the-books government assassin: Orphan X. After he broke with the Orphan Program, Evan disappeared and reinvented himself as the Nowhere Man, a man spoken about only in whispers and dedicated to helping the truly desperate.
But this time, the voice on the other end is Jack Johns, the man who raised and trained him, the only father Evan has ever known. Secret government forces are busy trying to scrub the remaining assets and traces of the Orphan Program and they have finally tracked down Jack. With little time remaining, Jack gives Evan his last assignment: find and protect his last protégé and recruit for the program.
I received this book thru Netgalley to review.
If you liked the Bourne movies then you will love this book. Taken at a young age and trained to be a professional killer, Evan finds himself ready to quit and and on his own. Now he helps people who have no hope and needs the nowhere man.
This book kept me reading and in three days I found myself reading three of the books in this series. No matter where you start it gives enough detail to pull you into the series.
In this one Evan loses his mentor and sets out kill everyone involved. He finds a few surprises on the way and realizes he is just as good a man as his mentor was.
I really enjoy Evan Smoak so much! I’m not sure I’ll ever tire of this series. Sometimes during the fight scenes I find myself holding my breath. Hurwitz can slam dunk written action scenes.
This is another book in the Orphan X Series and continues the saga of a government assassin, Evan Smoak. He's gone rogue and things are heating up. Full of action, danger and suspense. This book will take you on a roller coaster of action and emotions. A great read that will have you on the edge of your seat, page turning as fast as you can read. I read a reader copy and voluntarily chose to write a review. This series just gets better and better.
I devoured these books in a few days and really hope we get more in this series. This was the third in the Orphan X series and was as great as the first 2. I wasn't sure about the Joey character - angsty, moody 16 year old girls can be tough characters to write realistically since they are not very tolerable but Gregg Hurwitz writes all of his characters with complexity and empathy. I am so glad I read these books and absolutely can't wait to read more.
There certainly are a lot of lone-wolf good guy/ gal PI, do-gooder, antihero, vigilante types out there in the thriller world. Dark pasts, inner demons, trying to find closure for all the pain, trying to right all the wrongs... They're our guilty pleasures, the ones we root for, the ones who expose the secret government programs and all those other conspiracies: Bourne, Salander, Reacher, Hawk... the list goes on. Evan Smoak from Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series is a new character of the genre, but one that has made quite an impression. An orphan trained and active as a secret agent until he tires of the game and goes rogue. He goes underground, moves to Los Angeles and gives out his phone number to help people in trouble: 1-855-2-NOWHERE. He becomes The Nowhere Man.
The Orphan X series continues at its lightening pace with Hellbent. When his original handler and trainer Jack John calls him in trouble and asking for forgiveness, Evan knows that something is wrong. His arch-enemy Charles Van Scriver has tracked down Jack in an effort to flush Evan out. Van Scriver is now the head of the Orphan program and Evan is a loose end, someone who knows too much. Jack leaves Evan a clue to find a lost Orphan, a young woman named Joey who is both an asset and liability for the reclusive Good Samaritan.
Many of the recurring characters from the first two Orphan books make appearances in Hellbent: Mia the DA and her son Peter from downstairs, Melinda the art-restoring counterfeiter. They help to move Evan's character forward a bit. And there's an interesting Nowhere Man case imbedded in the story. As usual, Hurwitz's writing is detailed in all things tech, and military strategy; his action sequences from hand-to-hand to small arms, to full-scale car chases are as exciting as ever.
Hellbent is the best of genre. A morally straight and mindful Smoak taking on a sidekick in an effort to face off with Van Scriver in an ultimate game of cat and mouse. This one is good as a stand alone, but even better with the perspective of reading the full series. I highly recommend you pick up the Orphan X series today.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, and Mr. Hurwitz for the copy for review.
