This is a silly story about what happens when a dad joins the team, and then pretends to be the most spoiled, rude, selfish player of all.
At first the son can't figure out why the dad is being such a brat, then he takes it upon himself to "set his dad striaght" so to speak. And the son has to teach his father to be a good sport, and how to play well. It is a cute way to show kids how they look when they are acting out.

The Day My Dad Joined My Soccer Team by Maureen Fergus and Mike Lowry is a super cute story about what it means to be a good sport. We have all seen the child who perhaps doesn’t want to play his or her assigned position, would rather play with the grass than kick the ball, or gets really intensely angry when his or her team is losing. Told in the voice of a young boy giving pointers and instruction to his Dad in a kind and nurturing way. What a great book to help your little All Star remember how to be a great player. Also not a bad reminder to all those parents out there who may get a little too involved in their child’s sports. Although it’s a soccer story, the lessons really translate to any sport. Maureen Fergus is so fantastic at taking an everyday life lesson and putting a clever spin on it, in this case making the child the teacher and the parent the person who needs to adjust their behaviour. With a comic feel, Mike Lowry’s art in this story is bright, colourful, and has some fun little details to add to the humour of the story.
The Day My Dad Joined the Soccer Team is a hilarious misadventure of a father who hears his child's coach as for a parent volunteer, and immediately jumps into the match (turned out they just needed someone to help with refreshments). His child is mortified as his father continues interrupting the game with chants, getting distracted by a nearby slide, and throwing a fit when the other team scores a goal. It has a great message for overbearing parents who try to take over their child's sports games, while still being highly entertaining for everyone.
This book was a riot! Parents, teachers, and students alike will laugh at the ridiculous behavior of the father and appreciate the wisdom of his son.
I loved that this book addressed bullying and bad behavior with a humorous bent. I think this book would be ideal for teachers and librarians as a teaching book. I plan on purchasing this for my library.
When a dad learns that his son's soccer team needs help, he is all in...but maybe not in a good way. This book does a great job showing different ways of how to be a team player (and what not to do). It also highlights how you can deal with someone who maybe is a bit too competitive. Finally, I love Mike Lowery's comics and he does a good job illustrating this book with playful, colorful illustrations.
Thank you to netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This book was excellent and shows children exactly what being good sport is and playing in a team. I loved the angle that they used the dad to show this - it is a very good touch - 5 stars from me!
This book was equal parts funny and ironic to me. The pictures will make you laugh out loud as "dad" becomes a terrible teammate acting like an ill-behaved child in general. The irony for me comes in because just as many parents are poorly behaved at children's sports games as the children themselves. I enjoyed the book reinforcing the "rules" of play and good sportsmanship. It's a nice reminder for young and old alike. If you want a laugh that is rooted in truth and can handle a book that partly calls parents and children alike on the carpet, this title is for you.
Every parent of a little kids in sports should be given this book and it be mandatory reading. It’s about a dad that is so into his kids soccer game that he joins in, and not always for fun. He has to learn good sideline behavior, team spirit, and graciousness. I see this missing at so many kids sporting events, that this book is needed.
