I read the pdf ARC from 2017 & I don't think Warsuma had a ghost writer or co-writer or editor on this project. The upside of that is that her voice comes unfiltered, her words, thoughts uniquely her own, without being an imitation of other bios on the market. Downside is, it lacks structure & balance & proper organized stream of opinion. I googled Warsuma and her twitter account posts are the same, that is everything is as if a continuous stream of consciousness and incomprehensible. She should have consulted some proper writer for her bio for proper structure and order of project. For e.g. reader is not told of Warsuma's mother and father's background and family history - in fact she devotes a chapter early on two women (June and Billie) who are connected to her through baby-sitting / lodging in the same area as her mom.
Also, her photo on the cover is not from her 'Versailles' modeling days nor a current image. She is a very beautiful woman and the cover shot could and should have been a striking one, from an iconic shoot / some recent work assignment or done specifically for this book.
But all the best to her.
What an incredible, heartwrenching story. Amina is a true survivor of a horrific childhood. Her writing is vivid and raw, but ultimately inspirational. She is an amazing example of how the human spirit can get through unimaginable horror, yet make a successful life for herself. You won't forget this book!
