Due to a passing in the family a few years ago and my subsequent health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for years after the bereavement. Thank you for the opportunity.
When I requested this novel I didn't realize that it was #23 of a series but when I read it, I felt as though it could be one of those series that you don't necessarily need to read the series in order. Sure, the main characters have their ongoing plots but it was fairly easy to pickup once you get into it enough. I really enjoyed the main storyline in this book. The characters were unique and interesting... like Eve being a sculptor who attempts to recreate what a person looked like based on their skull. Some of the details seemed a little far fetched but it was thrilling enough to overlook those. One of the plots that I was really interested in was the Jock and Cara relationship. I definitely want to go back and read more books in the series to see more of how that began and how it changed after this book.
Great story by Iris Johansen. Really fabulous story, that kept me turning the pages!! A thrilling plot, and characters.
This was a really good book! I have been hearing about this author and I am pleased with the results. This book definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Eve Duncan thrillers are always fine reading materials and I am not being disappointed with this newest novel by Ms. Johansen. I am a bit surprised though as this novel takes place six years after the birth of Eve's son Michael, yet the novel was published within one year of the last Eve Duncan book where Eve was pregnant with Michael.
SHATTERED MIRROR is a labyrinth of possibilities constructed on a strange series of connections. Think of trying to put back together a shattered mirror – a puzzle that defies logic and sense and yet Eve Duncan’s career is built around her somewhat innate ability to put these puzzles together. As a forensic sculptor Eve recreates faces from nothing more than a skull. These skulls communicate with Eve, as difficult as that is to comprehend. And now it appears that her six year old son Michael shares Eve’s ability to connect with the people behind the skull.
Sounds kind of scary but these facial reconstructions have helped close open cases, helped family find closure and in some cases prevent more murders. Not all skulls are a result of foul play but Eve knows they each tell a story, that’s her job and she takes it very seriously.
The newest skull has brought with it a kind of crazy story. Eve and her husband Quinn need to find the solution to the puzzle seemingly attached to it. The case seems to be much more personal. The safety of Eve and her family are at risk and it all began with this charred skull with a bullet hole at the temple.
As always Iris Johansen has crafted a story filled with a multitude of twists and turns which have even the best arm chair detective second guessing themselves. A great subtitle for SHATTERED MIRROR would be changes since it follows some pretty life altering ones for many of the characters. Starting with Eve and her family, Cara and her grandfather Kaskov and now Darcie and Sylvie.
The roads twist and turn, intertwining quickly and often in this fast paced crime novel. Hard to keep track of the good guys and bad guys. At time role reversal is the game of the day.
At each bend in the road some new facts emerge and for the most part do not appear to have any connection with this skull. And since neither Eve nor Quinn believe in coincidence they are determined to get the facts. They are not satisfied with accepting these events are mere coincidence. There is definitely an element of evil and there is no shortage of evildoers. Some strangers and some family.
I am once again charged with providing a review for one of Iris Johansen’s books without giving up too many facts about the storyline. Suffice it to say that at each new crossroad the reader finds themselves looking at circumstances that defy logic. The road to closure is indeed muddied up with new people and events popping up. The cast of characters is amazing and Iris Johansen outdoes herself in SHATTERED MIRROR with some pretty devious and creepy ones. As always this Eve Duncan crime novel completely stands on its own. And in SHATTERED MIRROR Iris Johansen incorporates just about everyone we have ever met in previous books.
In the end, everyone has to face their own angels or demons.
Some would call Eve Duncan a skull collector. She brings new life into what has been destroyed. A forensic sculptor, she has a gift a connection to those that had a terrible ending. It is her desire to bring them back home. When a delivery is left at her door, she knows that there is connection. A deadly connection.
The mysterious skull is of a woman with a bullet. Who was she? Why was she killed and most importantly why was she left with her. Her young son Michael seems to have the same connection as his mother Eve. Not bothered by the skull, Michael sees the person. He even suggests a name. However, there is something sinister, it seems Sylvia is bringing a message of doom.
This case brings all of the important people in Eve Duncan life together, her charge Cara an upcoming musician who is currently attending a prestigious school. A family friend, Jock who has become Cara's protector and friend. However, now that Cara has "grown up", the tension between friends is becoming confusing which always makes for a good read. However, when an attack on Cara at her dorm occurs, the dots begin to connect rapidly. Bringing them all together and to bring Sylvia home.
A mystery thriller that goes to the depths of the bayou in Louisiana to a mother's fierce love for her son and family, this will keep you at the edge of your seat.
A Special Thank You to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
I have been a fan of this author since the very beginning and she never fails to keep me hooked. I can not wait to read more by her and will always be one of her biggest fans!!
One of the better Eve Duncan books that I've read, in a long time. Come on, by book 23, I can't be the only one thinking the series was getting a little stale, right? I loved the story line, was engaged, and was thoroughly surprised at the mini time hop this book took (3 years have passed in the storyline since the previous book) Cara is 18 and the sexual tension that was creepy previously, isn't any longer. This book was JUST what I needed to get back into the series. Thank you Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
4.25/5 stars
This was the best Eve Duncan book I have read in a long time. Once the gold box showed up, I knew the reader was in for an exciting ride, and I was not mistaken. Cara was a main character in this one, and she has grown up quite a bit. We also meet her roommate from school, Darcy, who plays a major role in the book also. Since Cara was involved, we also got a heavy dose of her horrific grandfather, but also the lovely Jock. As in the past, a skull in involved, Joe is present, and Michael is there too. The action is pretty consistent, which made this book fly for me. I do think Eve fans will be happy with one!
St. Martin's Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Shattered Mirror. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Yearning for normalcy as she and Joe raise their son Michael, Eve Duncan's carefully crafted world is shattered when a mysterious package appears in the family car. After it becomes increasingly apparent that something sinister is in the works, will Eve choose to align herself with one of her enemies for the sake of her loved ones?
The last few Eve Duncan books have declined in regards to the strength of the plot, with Shattered Mirror being no exception. As Eve finds herself, once again, directly in the path of a psychopath, both friend and foe come to her aid. I have grown tired of the characters in Eve's periphery, as they all have exceptional and unique abilities. This strains the legitimacy of the book, as it takes away from the realistic nature of some aspects of the plot. The author also chose to take her characters years into the future, which is too large of a span from the last novel. Both Michael and Cara are almost unrecognizable, as a large portion of their backgrounds were just omitted. The suspense and surprise has largely been taken out of the Eve Duncan novels, since it is almost guaranteed that the book will follow the same formula as the previous ones. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend Shattered Mirror to other readers.
I love Iris Johansen and this book is no exception! I have not read all of the Eve Duncan books but when I was approved for a review copy I knew I had to grab this one and I am glad I did. I will be going back and reading the entire series so that I can understand all of the characters. Eve is a forensic sculptor and when she receives a skull she sculpts it. there is a lot of action and suspense as the identity and what happened to the person is revealed.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my advanced review copy.
I've been reading Iris Johansen for more than twenty years and have been interested in her Eve Duncan series since its inception - the idea of forensic sculpting was brand new for a fictional character and I liked the balance of her character's strength and vulnerability. Years later, my reviews have gone up and down as Eve and her role in her novels has changed, but I am thrilled to write that despite a slower start, this book has Eve back where she started, strong but vulnerable and involved with a fast moving plot, full of action and suspense. I really enjoyed it. The finale/ending had my head spinning so much I had to go back and reread parts to wrap my head around what was happening! I couldn't put it down. And the cliffhangers - what is happening in the next novel?? Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #ShatteredMirror by @Iris_Johansen
I have read many of Iris Johansen's novels. This was another great book but because I am familiar with her work it seemed a bit predictable.
Shattered Mirror is an Eve Duncan novel that builds on existing characters that play a role in Eve's life. Cara, a young woman Eve took under her care, comes home from school to visit and brings her friend and roommate Darcy with her.
Eve, as usual, is working on a charred facial reconstruction; however, this one was left on the front seat of Joe Quinn's car in their driveway by a man known as Norwalk. While Joe and Eve seek answers about the appearance of the skull, they realize that everything is somehow connected.
The story evolves as Cara goes for her yearly visit to her grandfather, a Russian mafia kingpin, Sergai Kaskov. Cara brings Darcy with her and the story unfolds and the pieces come together.
I enjoyed how the story played out but it still was somewhat predictable. Overall a great book and one I would recommend.
This is the 23rd Eve Duncan book and one of the author's all time best . I have read the entire series and recommend highly this series. I enjoyed this immensely with the fast action ,, sharp dialogue and fast pace plot. As always the author delivers with this exceptional series. The action is non stop and worth the afternoon away from life to finish this fantastic book. In this next in series Eve's son Michael and her ward, Cara, are kidnapped by a psychopath. Jock Gavin and Cara's grandfather, along with Joe and Eve are to the rescue. I guarantee you will not be able to put it down.
Thank you for the ARC which does not influence my review. My opinions are my own.. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to review this book. Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley. I look forward to the next in series !
Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series is always spectacular and the Shattered Mirror doesn't disappoint. Eve receives a burned skull in a special package at her Atlanta home and is instantly thrown into a case that threatens the most important thing in her life - her family. Eve's adopted daughter Cara and her protector Jock Gavin are involved in this thriller that takes one from Atlanta to France to the swamps of Louisiana. Eve's world is threatened and she must work with her husband Joe and other family members to protect her precious son Michael. The Shattered Mirror is spectacular and sends the reader on a high speed ride with typical Iris Johansen intrigue. I loved it!
This is from the series with Eve Duncan and she is joined by Jock and Cara. A skull is s left with Eve and it brings her many challenges.
This was very suspenseful and had me guessing what would happen next. Fans of the author will not want to miss this one.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of Shattered Mirror by Iris Johansen in exchange for an honest review. This novel is 23rd in the series with Eve Duncan, forensic sculptor. Because this was my first in this series, I felt that I was missing necessary information from the previous books and I had trouble catching up. This is not a standalone novel. The story starts with a suspenseful delivery of an unknown skull to Eve's cottage. Not knowing who left this, she goes ahead and sculpts the face of this unknown woman and the story takes off from there. The rest of the book reveals who this mystery woman was and what happened to her, who sent this mystery skull to Eve and what danger lurks after the identification becomes known. Good mystery with many characters and a fair amount of suspense.
One of the best books I have read in 2018, and I can't wait to read the author's next book. This was a very exciting thrilling book to read with great character development.
In my review of Night and Day, I commented that Eve Duncan’s unborn child showed indications of having ‘special’ talents. Well, in Shattered Mirror we all get to find out what ‘special’ talent that Eve’s six-year-old son, Michael, possesses. I’m not going to tell you what is, you will have to read the book to find out, but what I will say is that I’m a bit disappointed in the outcome. I was hoping maybe for something like, x-ray vision, telekinesis, or mind control, but I am afraid it is not quite as exciting as that, but it is special. Then again, he is only six, so who knows.
Once again, Eve Duncan is the target of an evil killer because of her dangerous occupation as a forensic sculptor. Of course, it is not enough for the killer to go after Eve, but her friends and family as well. Both A-1 violinist, Cara Delaney, and Michael are in his cross-hairs. As you can imagine, Eve is not about to take this lightly, and calls out the infantry which includes; FBI/Cop/ex-Navy seal husband, Joe Quinn, assassin extraordinaire, Jock Gavin, as well as two newcomers, Russian mafia head, Sergai Kaskov, and Cara’s college roommate and friend, Darcy Nichols, a gorgeous blue-eyed actress.
Naturally, no Eve Duncan novel would be complete without a little romance. Cara is now eighteen and she is realizing that her best friend, Jock Gavin, is a hunk of a man. There is nothing better to get those pheromones flowing than having a killer chasing after you (wink, wink).
Shattered Mirror is a great beach read and a way to blow off a lazy weekend. Though this could be read as a standalone novel, I would recommend reading the trilogy; Shadow Play, Hide Away, and Night and Day to get a good background on Cara Delaney and Sergai Kaskov. And Countdown, to get a better background on Jock Gavin.
