I would like to thank Netgalley and St Martin's Press for an advance copy of Shattered Mirror, the twenty third novel to feature forensic artist Eve Duncan and her family.
Eve is at home in Atlanta when a gift wrapped parcel is left in her husband Joe's truck. When they open it they find a charred skull partially destroyed by a bullet. Eve, urged on by her six year old son, Michael, feels compelled to reconstruct it but is absolutely astonished when she meets the living embodiment of the skull a few days later. Who has sent the skull and why are the driving force in the novel.
I thoroughly enjoyed Shattered Mirror which is an out and out adventure novel and the series is fast becoming one of my guilty pleasures. Why? Normally I like a bit of realism in my reading but I make an exception with this series and wholeheartedly embrace the paranormal elements, outlandish plot and lovefest that is the family dynamic because it is a fun, escapist read. I admire the clever plotting which has many unexpected twists and turns and love the thrills of the hunt for the bad guys, the setbacks and the victories. It had me turning the pages rapidly and I put it down very reluctantly when life intervened. It is not, however, a cosy read as it contains a fair amount of explicit violence and some evil characters.
I'm not quite sure what to say about the characters. The very visible love they share is pervasive and a bit cloying but they back it up with aggressive action when threatened which mitigates some of the sweetness. I was disappointed not to see Jane, Eve's adopted daughter, and more importantly her devastatingly attractive boyfriend, Seth Caleb, in this episode but the other characters made up for it (almost!). I'm already looking forward to the next instalment.
Shattered Mirror is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
I have enjoyed the Eve Duncan series, but I struggled with this entry. Rather than developing, the characters have become more cookie-cutter like and the plot more ordinary. This was a disappointing read.
Having read this series since it began there was a point I had gotten to be bored by these characters and plots--never again! Spectacular plot, twists, conclusion that made sense yet kept me interested throughout. The characters full and with the addition of Darcy varied and interesting
I have read most of the books in the Eve series. I do enjoy them for the storyline, but at the same time they drive me a bit nuts. No one talks like these people. I like the characters to some degree but find them very unrealistic. If you have read others in the series, this is comparable to the last few. If you haven't, I'd pass.
Yeah, this was another fantastic Eve Duncan story! It does jump time by a few years since Mind Game, since Michael's now 6 in this book, but that just means that he had a bit of time to grow up and they've been having peace. Of course, that couldn't last!
This book was about equal time shown to Eve, Cara and Jock. They all have a part to play in this story, and yeah, with the time jump, Cara's now 18, which adds some complications and conflicts, which was really great to read!
We were introduced to Darcy, who was really interesting, the twin mentioned in the synopsis. I really enjoyed her role in this story, it's almost on level to Eve losing Bonnie. Almost. She was a really intriguing character who came up with some really unexpected actions, and I really hope she gets her own book!
This bad guy, he was like, over the top cruel. He has his reasons for what he did, but that in no way excuses what he did. It makes them worse, because wow, cruel! It makes his ending, and who did it and how, feel all the more just!
Yeah, this was another amazing book, and I can't wait for more!
Really enjoyed. Another great Eve Duncan novel. Can hardly wait to see what comes next.
I loved this book! While this is one of my first in this series, it most definitely going to be my next binge read! I am completely hooked!
A special family, loving children, fierce friends and mom, this story has it all. Including the villain so easy to hate.
What an amazing story! Great characters. It's got it all.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another exciting thriller from the author. Suspense throughout. I do not feel that this can be read as a stand alone, but an excellent continuation of this series. A book I recommmend to all.
Lake Cottage Atlanta, Georgia- When a box containing a human skull is left in the passenger seat of their truck, where only moments earlier their son Michael was sitting, Eve and Joe realize that someone is trying to send a message. As Joe begins looking for clues to the man targeting them, Eve begins the challenging reconstruction of a skull which suffered a gunshot to the head and has been partially cremated.
Carnegie Residence Hall New York- When Cara Duncan is attacked in her dorm room Jock Gavin, her protector and friend, is certain Cara's grandfather and mafia kingpin is to blame. For their safety, Cara decides to take her new roommate Darcy home with her until Jock can finish his investigation.
When Cara arrives home, Eve finds herself staring at a mirror image of the woman she just reconstructed...
This novel is full of suspenseful twists and turns as they try to uncover the connection between the missing girl and the Duncan family. This was an intense page turner I had a hard time putting down. I will say that have not read any of the previous Eve Duncan novels but I was able to pick up who all of the characters were easily and found this to be easily read as a standalone novel. This novel also has a touch of paranormal element which comes into play with developing the plot. Shattered Mirror is a perfect novel for anyone who loves suspenseful crime thrillers.
5 stars
Joe and his son Michael return home. Joe tells Michael to wait in the pickup while he goes in and speaks to Eve about Michael’s getting beat up again by a school bully. Michael gets out of the pickup and waits on the porch. While there, he senses something in the woods. When the whole family goes outside to investigate the “bear” in the woods, they notice a box on the seat of the pickup. When they look in the box, they notice a broken mirror inside, along with a burnt skull.
Eve is determined to keep it to do a reconstruction. She allows Joe to call the forensics team though. She will begin the reconstruction on the female skull in the morning.
When Eve talks to Cara, her “adopted” daughter on the telephone, Cara tells her she is worried about Jock who is a close friend of hers. She hasn’t heard from him. One her way to a concert, she is stunned to see Jock in the lobby of her dorm. They ride to the concert together and Jock tells Cara that she is being followed and that her room was bugged.
When Cara is attacked in her room, Jock convinces her to go home a day early. On a whim, she asks Darcy to go with her. Together the two young women travel to Eve and Joe’s cabin. Eve is absolutely stunned when she sees Darcy. It’s her twin sister Sylvie.
The plot thickens when the attack seems to be about Darcy and not Cara. But wait, there’s more…A series of murders and deaths has Joe, Jock and Eve in motion. Eve is so angry, scared and desperate after being called by the killer that she calls Koskov, Cara’s crime boss grandfather for help.
This is a very well written and plotted novel. I am embarrassed to say that this is my first Iris Johansen novel. Boy, have I missed a lot. I went immediately to Amazon and took a look at her other Eve Duncan novels. The suspense in the story begins immediately and continues at a high level throughout the story. I swear I was almost biting my nails at times. There is sufficient information given about the main characters to flesh them out and make them believably human but not so much as to detract from the story. Even for a first time reader like me. I liked Eve, Cara, Michael and Joe, they are great characters. I liked the relationship between the family members.
I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for forwarding to me a copy of this astoundingly great book to read and enjoy.
Another wonderful Eve Duncan book. I just can not get enough of her stories. The continuing story and the characters always grab me from page one. And Michael is a very special character and I can not wait to see what he will do next
I love Iris Johansen and I love Eve Duncan, but I can't help but feel that this series has run its course. I would love to see Duncan spread her wings and invent some new characters and plot lines, she's one of the best in the romantic suspense business, so I know she's more than capable.
