I love to bake bread and have experimented with many recipes over the years. This book is a gem for bread bakers who want to improve their technique. I loved the authors writing style. It was personal and humorous. I'd highly recommend this book.
Reading this book felt as though I was involved in a private conversation with the author. Her writing style felt casual and personal. The photos included were beautiful. I was intrigued by the idea of stenciling on my loaves of bread. Upon finishing this book, I felt motivated to begin baking immediately.
Jensen presents 12 months of baking recipes from the Smoke Signals Bakery, each suited to the particular time of the year. And the recipes look delicious, but I was even more interested into the glimpses of Jensen’s private life at the beginning of each chapter, where she revealed little peeks into her personal life. From the soul-destroying end of one relationship to (perhaps) the start of a new one, I was hooked. Maybe Jensen can follow up with a memoir?
A very interesting cookbook by Tara Jensen of Smoke Signals Bakery. She bakes bread and pies by using a wood-fired oven. Tara shares tips about living a simple life and month by month recipes including wonderful pancakes. This will be a classic that everyone should own!
I had such high hopes with this book. The recipes are good but not unique. I felt that the story of the authors longing, loneliness etc had nothing to do with a cookbook. I was left feeling, either write an autobiography or a cookbook. The two don’t mix.
What a beautiful book! I devoured it in one sitting and had to flick back through the photos for a second helping.
"I went to town to buy a good axe, a wheel of cheese, and a bushel of apples." Jensen has made me yearn for a simpler life and the chance to nourish myself and my family through baking.
'The power of staying with something is the potential of recognition.' I do hope that Jensen gets the recognition she deserves through this glorious year in the life of her bakery.
I was excited to read this book. It is a quick read!
I liked the author's writing style, but I was hoping this would have been a little more geared towards the "memoir" type of book . Instead, this is more of a memoir/cookbook/instructional baking. The author talks about life events, then sort of drifts into descriptions of what is what in cooking (i.e. gluten free), then tops it off with a recipe.
Fun to read, just was hoping for more personal stuff.
