I quite liked this although not as much as I thought I would. Food writing is my favourite genre - I particularly love Ruth Reichl, Gabrielle Hamilton and Laurie Colwin - and I love how intimate and emotional the topic of food can be. This book, whilst easy to read and enjoyable, just for me didn't have that same level of personal feeling running through the text. That said, it's still worth adding to your collection of food writing (if you have such a thing!) and you'll enjoy it I think.

This book truly is a Gastronomic Journey. This is the tails of Susan Buckley after she met and married her husband Peter Buckley. There are also 28 recipes int he book so you can eat along as you read.

Peter Buckley was a writer, photographer, gourmand, as well as an inventive chef. The pair travel all over the world to eat basically. Peter loved to chat with the farmer who grew the ingredients, the chef who cooked them, and of course loved tasting the food.

I am not real sure how Susan Buckley can remember what restaurant she ate at and what she ate in say 1973, when I can barely remember what I had for dinner last Thursday, but she does, and she writes a romping tale about it.

I enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes in this book and tasting the dishes with her. It is a great book especially if you love food.

For their honeymoon they travel the world and try all kinds of different new foods, making friends along the way and saving recipes to use in their own little kitchen when the honeymoon tour ends.



For readers who enjoy books about food and travel, this is a true delight!



Likes/Dislikes: I love this book! It takes a nice quiet tone and pace and pairs up well with a rainy day for a good long reading session. There are twenty-seven recipes too so when the reading is done, we can cook too!



Rating: PG-14 and up, mainly for interest and reading level.

An interesting book about love, travel and of course food! Susan Buckley lead an exciting and interesting life with her late husband, Peter and their adventures made for an entertaining read.

A really funny book. Enjoyable and funny. Reminds one of travelling and food. Really recommend it. I had picked it p, not knowing much about it. But This turned out to be such fun. You just get so caught up in the world and travelling and just makes you want to go on adventures.

What an enjoyable book, part of the time I felt as if I was sitting with the author listening to her recount her stories of her life with Peter Buckley a larger than life personality , who was fascinating to a girl who had always wanted to travel.

This is a lovely book - just right for a summer read. It takes the reader back to when the author first met Peter Buckley in the 1960s and give an evocative insight into what gourmet eating was at the time. It must have been such fun!

This is such a fascinating tale of adventures with travel and food. The author has such a warm and engaging style and is such fun to read about her life with her larger than life husband. It is so cool to read her tales of worldwide travel and cuisines. Her life seems like a dream and it so nice to get a window into a privileged and fantastic life filled with unique experiences that many of us will never be able to have on our own.

3.5 stars. An interesting look into a somewhat privileged world of food and travel. Susan and her husband Peter were fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy fine meals and ingredients in many places and they did so with gusto. This book is Susan's loving look back at that time. If you are a foodie, you will certainly enjoy her descriptions of some of the mouth-watering meals they had and their experience. What an enjoyable book, part of the time I felt as if I was sitting with the author listening to her recount her stories of her life with Peter Buckley a larger than life personality , who was fascinating to a girl who had always wanted to travel.
The author does state, that this book was written about the good times, when eating with her husband was an adventure.
This is a life most of us can only dream about, the travel, the friends, the love of food which had them traveling all over to sample some of the best cuisine in the world. Also how that love of food gave them lasting friendships, the Chefs, the food vendors or cheese makers, who brought them back year after year to places that they cherished.
They were friends of well known writers, top bullfighters, 5 star chefs, so their jet setting lives were never dull. This book was well written with a very easy flow. The author has a nice way of describing the scenes, and she even includes some of their favorite recipes.

I had no idea who Peter Buckley was before reading this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed this vicarious romp with the Buckley family. <i>Eating with Peter</i> celebrates travel, adventure, and food (especially food) in freewheeling, twentieth-century style. There's something seductive about a life, unapologetically, well-lived. And, the recipes aren't bad, either.

This is a good book in which the author looks back on her life with her late husband when they were travelling the world and tasting different cuisine. The stories were interesting and I could imagine what her husband was like through the stories in this book. They travelled far and wide and It was nice reading about their adventures together.

Don't read this book on an empty stomach! This was a great book for lovers of food and travel. Susan Buckley tells the story of her life traveling and eating with her husband, a larger than life character named Peter who was raised in France and had friends all over the world. The descriptions of the places they went and the food they ate were detailed and mouthwatering. It's a great weekend read.

An interesting memoir by Susan Buckley who married Peter Buckley, who was definitely what you would call a foodie. Peter seems like a gregarious character who made friends easily everywhere he went, and many of those friends were famous. He was friends with Ernest Hemingway and his wife, for example as well as a famous bullfighter in Spain. The book details their adventures in eating in Morocco, France, the Caribbean, Spain, and the U.S. Peter was fascinated with food and enjoyed traveling to markets and talking with the farmers, cheese makers, etc. He and Susan's travels and their home entertaining were centered around friends and food. There were tales of Michelin starred restaurants and some of the best cuisine imaginable. Friendships with highly respected chefs were common. Apparently the couple was very wealthy to be able to travel and eat the way they did.

A light, enjoyable read detailing memorable meals throughout their married life. The book contains some of their most enjoyed recipes as well.

A warm and delightful memoir of the author's late husband, Peter Buckley (a noted writer) and their adventures in the world of food.

Buckley, no slouch as a writer herself, animates these tales with deft pictures of the people they meet, the culture of the various places they visit and wonderful, often hilarious tales of the food they eat.

Her love for her husband comes through on every page of the book, making it a wonderful memoir.

I would give this book 3.75 stars if I could. Susan has a sense of humor, love for travel and adventure. Susan and Peter, her husband, appreciate good food and trying new recipes. Their love for cooking together, entertaining, and shopping at their local marketplaces appealed to me. I enjoyed that part of the story a lot.
There is a lot of information crammed into the story, but overall it's really good and well written.

I found this book to be truly delightful and a wonderful memoir of Susan Buckley's travels with her husband Peter, a larger than life American. The publisher's noted that people who enjoyed Julie and Julia would enjoy this book and I agree, I would also like to add Susan Loomis with On Rue Tatin as a foodie book in the same genre. Eating with Peter is truly a travelogue of a privileged bygone world that most of us could only dream about and Susan Buckley can't quite believe herself that she ended up in it. There are several recipes from the travels at the end of each chapter either gleaned from hosts where the Buckley's have dined or created by Peter himself. The book is delightfully sprinkled with lightly coloured line drawings which perfectly complement the text. I particularly enjoyed the trips into France, Italy and Spain having tried wonderful local food in all these countries and being an avid fan of the markets as well, but never to the level of the dining
(Michelin stars) the Buckley's achieved. Very easy to read and a true escape on a gastronomic culinary journey.
