Creative Folk Art and Beyond features four artists who present beautiful inspirations for the readers to express their own creativity. I enjoy that each artist has her own style and offers different creative ideas. Flora Waycott is a master of Scandinavian inspired and often symmetrical floral patterns. Her instructions to create your own patterns are easy to follow. I like her gift tags and can easily see those embellishing a Christmas tree. Oana Befort plays with animals and flowers. She has great tips on making multiple thank-you-cards with the same motif. Marenthe Otten adds lettering to the mix. Last, but not least comes Erri Fry Kasuba. She has a wonderful brainstorming prompt on creating a personal mood board with cherished items that evoke happiness and make you feel hyggelig. The artists can all be found on the internet and the corresponding links are provided in the book. This book really inspires me to come up with my own ideas and I will try to draw the things that I personally like when I follow the prompts in this book.
Creative Folk Art & Beyond by Flora Waycott, Oana Befort, Marenthe Otten, and Terri Fry Kasuba is a great tutorial for getting starting with folk art designs. There are wonderful photos of every project with step by step directions, including space to practice drawing designs in the book. Highly recommend that you purchase this book instead of borrow since you're supposed to write and paint in it. This is more of a workbook than just an idea book. I really liked the templates and color schemes.
This is a good addition to the Hygge trend that seems to have taken over lately. There is some explanation about the style, and many examples that appear before the patterns. The focus in the book seems to be on painting, but includes patterns for stencils, rubber stamping and sketching. It displays examples of art and then includes some practice sheets, or half filled in shapes for the reader to complete in order to learn the style. There is huge variety in the projects such as gift tags, wrapping paper, stamps, or a stand up fox paper doll. Some designs are easy, while others are more complicated, but none of them seemed impossible for a beginner to tackle. My favourites were the adorable foxes and the various ways they could be represented while still having the same basic outline.
Would definitely recommend.
A charming book, with plenty of great ideas for creating your own designs based on Scandinavian folk art.
The book is divided into four main sections, each written by a different woman folk artist. They take slightly different approaches to art but they all begin by encouraging you to create simple designs based on nature and then expand them.
Each section has several projects you can then use to create your own designs.
The book' is focussed on drawing and painting. This if you are looking fir ways to create other kinds of folk art, it is inspirational but not helpful.
'Creative Folk Art & Beyond' is a lovely book full of DIY ideas involving scandinavian folk art. The book consists of easy to make projects supported by step by step instructions. It's a must have for anyone who loves scandinavian design and hygge lifestyle.
