The Heartbreak Cure is a young adult contemporary romance by Amanda Ashby. This book was super cute! It was exactly what I was in the mood for. The tagline for this book sums it up perfectly; " This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a swoony bad boy who will melt your heart, brownies, and witty banter. One, two, or all three might prove addictive…". It is sweet, addictive cuteness that will satisfy your YA romance sweet tooth. I love a bad boy with an ooey gooey marshmallow center, and that is Alex to a tee! Perfect for fans of the fake boyfriend trope.
In The Heartbreak Cure we meet our main character, Cat right after she is dumped. In order to get over her ex, she has a plan. Dubbed her heartbreak cure, she grabs bad boy Alex as her fake boyfriend. As you can imagine, the lines between fake and real start to get blurred. This book was well written, a super quick read and so adorable. I really enjoyed the characters and the romance and I can't wait to read another book by Amanda Ashby.
Unfortunately this book has gone in my DNF pile. It just wasn't engaging me like it would have years ago when I first requested it. My reading tastes have changed a lot over the years as I've gotten older and unfortunately some of the books requested years ago have been affected by my reading tastes and the fact that a lot of books for younger audiences haven't been grasping my attention as of late. I thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
The Heartbreak Cure is all about Cat, who after being dumped over the summer, asks bad boy, and friend Alex, to pretend to be her boyfriend, so that people thinks she's bounced back quicker than her ex. At school, she can show off her new relationship, and pseudo-friendship with Alex, but the more time they spend together, the more their fake relationship feels very much real, and it's soon a big problem that one may feel something more than the other does.
I love the fake boyfriend trope, and while it was alright in this book, it was nothing special. The two main characters, Alex and Cat, were cute together, and very shippy, but Alex had always hidden his friendship with Cat from everyone else, and there was a lot of unnecessary drama in this book that got my eyes rolling. Yeah, a cute read, but not one I would be jumping back to.
I’m a sucker for romances and this book is no different. I highly recommend if someone needs an easy read, with good content.
Okay fake relationship turned real one YA romances are all kinds of adorable, let's be honest. This one kind of takes it to a whole other level. Definitely check it out.
In “The Heartbreak Cure” by Amanda Ashby we meet Cat, who not only just got dumped but did so in spectacular fashion. But when Alex, her dreamy, bad boy ex-neighbor delivers his Grandma’s heartbreak brownies and then offers to drive her to school after LuLu (her car) dies Cat comes up with a plan. Beg Alex to be her fake boyfriend so everyone will believe she is okay.
But Alex has some heavy memories and guilt on his shoulders and believes Cat deserves better than him. Can Cat breakdown the walls that Alex has built and make him see that he is better than his past or will she need more brownies?
This was a cute, quick read with some fun secondary characters and banter between friends. I received a copy through Net Galley and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book, although it didn't really tickle much of my interest after the first quarter of the story. I expected so much of this, but was sadly disappointed. The writing style's very easy to get into, though, and so I still enjoyed it.
I would be honest.
The moment that I saw this book was part of Entangled Teen Crush Novels I did't hesitate but request this. As all Crush Novels are amazing.
But when I started reading this I think that I regret requesting it as I was bored reading the plot. I was confused also that the author always used the pronoun "he" while describing a woman character.
The plot is kinda predicting and a little bit slow.
I may DNF the book but I will try to read it and give it a chance next time.
This book was so adorable and really quick to read. I loved the characters. The storyline had flow. It was really great.
Good book - worthwhile read. Enjoyable writing and good characters
“The Heartbreak Cure” reminds me why I love Entangles Crush stories. Cat Turner a girl who looses herself in her Writing and when a guy dates her for a week over the summer and puts a YouTube video about it saying it was for a “challenge” series he was doing her World gets turned upside down. In her humiliation to turns to her friend and the town bad boy Alex and asks him to be her fake boyfriend for a short time to get some of the talking away from the video and he agrees (the fact that Alex always wanted to be a bit closer to her then she was definitely aided his agreement).
This adorable novel is filled with sweet moments and awkward situations as Alex and Cat find that love may have always been an arms length away from them both.
I really enjoyed this short and sweet read. This kind of book where characters slowly find their ways together through fun little circumstances make me really happy. It’s always nice to see two characters who are friends finding themselves realizing they want so much more. It gives me all the warm and fuzzy feelings and I absolutely love it!
This book made me all warm and cozy while reading - definitely a beautiful and sweet romance you won't want to put down!
The Heartbreak Cure was a super adorable and sweet read!! I really loved Cat and Alex! They had such a swoony chemistry! I love how they were such good friends in the beginning and eventually became something more. Their interactions were hilarious and I love just how they seem to balance each other out so perfectly!
This is definitely one of the cutest YA contemporaries I've read from EntangledTeen. Perfect reading choice if you just want to relax, have fun and fall in love!
It is a good story between two close friends - a girl who is so good in writing and has a dream to be a journalist and the boy who has a complicated family's background but he is truly has a good heart, it just that he is afraid of pursuing a girl whom who owns his heart from long time ago.
Reading this book has made my heartache when Alex Locke has to go through all that kind of things in his life, how he fought hard to make sure he is in a stable path and trying to avoid to approach the girl he loves.
Overall, it is a wonderful story and I do enjoy reading it.
The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby is a sweet, fun, and delightful YA contemporary romance and part of the Entangled Teen Crush series. Cat Turner was dumped publicly over the summer, and she asks her ex neighbor to pose as her boyfriend. I love this genre, there is something so innocent about first loves. I love the quirky people and situations in this book, and watching the characters grow over. I found this book to be a quick read, and recommend it to all readers who enjoy a sweet romance.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Such a cute book! The fake boyfriend trope in YAs can sometimes be so cliche and repetitive but not for this book! I love the fact that they started out as friends -not best friends because I feel like that would make this book extra cliche which is almost always never a good thing. The development of their relationship was gradual, it wasn't insta-love but they did admit to themselves that they liked the other person. I also appreciated that Cat was the one who initiated something instead of Alex because you rarely see a girl making the first move.
Confession time! I accidentally got sucked into wanting to read this book purely because of the brownies and then kinda sorta maybe quite enjoyed the read, despite having the best intentions to rip its romantic heart to shreds. Sure, there were some soppy sentences, mostly focused around how people smelled for some reason, but overall I really enjoyed the story. I feel like I need to apologise to myself because I don’t do romance novels so I’m more than a little disturbed that I liked the characters so much but if I enjoyed it, then the target audience are going to love it!
I’m showing my age here but I’m so glad I grew up in a world without the internet. I can’t even imagine how kidlets and teens these days navigate the awkwardness of growing up knowing the world is watching and most likely recording all of their mistakes, humiliations and heartaches for posterity. Back when I was a teen [she croaks while leaning on her walking stick and wagging her finger] you could quietly hope for the next drama to unfold in someone else’s life so you could be left in peace to pick up the pieces of your shattered heart. These days your most embarrassing moments can go viral. [shudders]
So, what is The Heartbreak Cure? Brownies!!! Baked by the 86 year old grandmother of your cute ex-neighbour boy (who is only a) friend. YUM! Hey, Alex, would you please let Birdie know I feel a heartbreak coming on? 😜
Cat and Alex share the experience of being shamed for something that wasn’t their fault. Cat has been featured in a YouTube video posted by a disgusting doofus 🤬 who enlisted her as a recruit in a summer challenge: “Ask out a loser and see how far she’ll go with you in one week before you break her heart. Bonus points if she gets a tattoo with your name on it.” Seriously, people??? I have no words.
In the slightly unbelievable but hey, it’s fiction category, this girl’s heart was broken over a guy she dated a grand total of three times in one week? And one of those dates was a group date. Maybe I’m out of touch and not the one to comment on the believability factor here, but no one is chipping away at the icicles surrounding this nerd’s heart in just three dates.
And how did doofus find his way into her heart in the first place? He used her Goodreads addiction to pretend he liked the same parts in books that she did. How dare you use a love of books as your weapon of choice, you cowardly, despicable, pathetic excuse for a human being!!
Meanwhile, Alex has been shamed by pretty much the whole community and sadly he’s internalised the seriously bad vibes. Now a lone wolf with a bad boy reputation, he thinks he deserves everything bad that comes his way yet aches to be granted a scholarship to study engineering at a college somewhere far away from the town that’s tarred him without knowing a thing about him personally. Come on, townsfolk with the pitchforks at the ready, he’s Birdie’s grandson! You know! The one who bakes brownies? How bad can he be?!
Anyway, after knowing her humiliating heartbreak made its way to internet land, Cat is feeling pretty darn sorry for herself. She’s even got the creative writing piece where the guy gets massacred by killer ants to prove it. Our Cat is a wannabe journalist on her way to fame via Oprah’s book club. So mid-massacre, who should hop over the fence but the boy with the smouldering good looks and muscles that define any item of clothing he wears, Alex. And he brings brownies that Birdie made. (Open your eyes, Cat! He’s the one!)
Cat comes up with the perfect solution to get the attention off her ugly cry heartbreak video. Why doesn’t she pretend to have a new boyfriend? Why doesn’t she choose our so hot that you could barbeque your dinner on his muscles (did we mention his clothes look wonderful draped over them?) Alex, who kinda has a thing for Cat but of course he’s not good enough for her so she can’t be ‘his’. [Ugh, men thinking of women as property.]
Throw in Cat’s take-no-crap best friend with green hair (Nikki), scary senior editor of the school paper (Mackenzie), doofus heartbreaker rubbing it in with Cat’s ex-friend (Isabel), a liberal sprinkling of adult drama, bucketloads of internal dialogue, angst-a-plenty and a serious amount of baggage following our fake couple wherever they go. What could go wrong?
Favourite sentence: “Wow, you look like boiled crap.”
Favourite character: Birdie, brownie baker and all round sweetie.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley (thank you so much to NetGalley and Entangled: Crush for the opportunity) in exchange for honest feedback.
When I requested this title, I was expecting a hate-to-love romance trope, with a lot of angst and all. Honestly, I didn't expect that the two main characters would've known each other--even being a best friend. Still, this book is pretty cute and perfect if you're looking for quick reads.
I quite like Cat and her love interest, Alex. Cat is an aspiring writer, and she's on the school's journalist team, which make it easy to relate to her since I was too. Alex, on the other hand, was the typical quiet, brooding bad boy with 'dangerous' reputation that made everyone avoid him. However, he's actually just a sweet, kind boy with a tragic past. I have to admit that at first, I didn't really ship them together but the more I read, the more I thought they were perfect for each other! Sadly, this book didn't make swoon as I usually do when reading romance book.
In conclusion, I still recommend this book if you're looking for some adorable and quick read!
