4.5 stars - this is one of my favorite series, and book four did not disappoint. Told in alternating chapters between past and present, The Secret Children is quite a page turner! I will read anything Carol Wyer writes.
Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC via NetGalley.

2 stars.
Unfortunately this book fell short for me. I haven't read the 3 previous in this series and maybe that makes a difference. There was quite a lot of characters that seemed as though they had backstories in the previous books so it felt like I had been missing a lot of information which made it a bit confusing. When a story requires a bit more thinking than usual, it runs the risk of becoming more like a chore instead of something to relax into. This was bordering on doing that. It didn't really hold my interest but there were scenes that I had enjoyed at times. While this isn't for me, if you had enjoyed her first 3 in this series, I'd say you would probably like this too.
What a page turner. The author didn't disappoint with this installment of the DI Robyn Carter series. Sad that I've now only got 1 more book to read - then I can finish the DI Natalie Ward books too. Great fast paced story. Loved the cat!
* Reader discretion needed as novel contains sensitive topics *
Ms Wyer has delivered us a brilliant Police Procedural series and honestly they just get better and better. Each story is woven intricately with layer upon layer of mystery (like an ogre or an onion, lol). Every time I get one I have to save it until I know that no-one is going to annoy me, preferably when everyone is out then I know I can read till my hearts content which generally means to the very last page.
Ms Wyer writes us a rather disturbing novel discussing a plethora of topics most of them will make more than a few of us feel uncomfortable. We learn a little more about both old and murder characters which I always enjoy, it feels like getting to know your friends better, that's always a good thing right?
Picking up from the huge OMG moment at the end of the last novel I'm hooked as always. I can't help but admire the way that DI Robyn Carters mind works, her mind never fully off the job one way or another takes her work home with her. Robyn and her team, Mitz, Anna and David work extremely well together. For the most part they take care not to make things worse for the victims and witnesses of the most heinous of crimes.
There's nothing that I'd change in this series which is unusual for me. My only criticism is that the author can't write them any and that they aren't long enough. All I ask is that Detective Robyn Carter isn't killed off anytime soon, me heart will break and I'm absolutely positive that I won't be the only one. I'm a massive believer in reading a series from the beginning so I'll say again please start with the first novel Little Girl Lost.
If you are a fan of authors such as Angela Clarke, Patricia Gibney or Angela Marsons you must give Carol Wyer a shot. If you enjoy the Robyn Carter series there's the DI Natalie Ward series to look forward to, you lucky devil you.
Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Wyer, Netgalley and Bookouture.
Thank you for letting me review this title. I absolutely love all Carol Wyer books, this was no exception. Fantastically written and I love the way the characters stories are interwoven in every book. I can’t wait for the next instalment in the series
Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy of the Silent Children by Carol Wyer.
Ever since Little Girl Lost I have been a fan of Carol' s writing. This book is clever, gripping and completely unputdownable. The Silent Children was a cleverly plotted story that had me guessing right to the end. I enjoy reading about Robyn, how she has to get all of the pieces of the jigsaw together to solve the investigation. I also enjoy finding out about Robyn and I think the whole series gives her character depth and you get a great insight into her back story.
The story starts with the discovery of a man's body found in a car with a gunshot wound to the back of his neck. The second body is a woman found at he bottom of her staircase. The third body is of a man who has seemingly dies of natural causes. The story is then connected to a brother and sister who give details of their abusive childhood.
This is a great fast-paced thriller, you won't want to stop reading! This book is for fans of crime thrillers and psychological detective fiction.
The Silent Children is the 4rth book in the DI Robyn Carter series. I have read the prior books and I was excited to read this one. This book did not disappoint and is a great addition to the series. The author gives enough background so that this can be read as a stand-alone without being lost.
This is a fast paced, page turner that any police procedural and thriller lover will enjoy. A mystery that is full of twists and turns. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of Carol Wyer's "The Silent Children" in exchange of an honest review.
A child makes a gruesome discovery while on a hike in the woods with his grandmother. He peeks into a car and the dead eyes of a murdered man stare back. DI Robyn Carter is put on the case. A few days later, a woman is found dead in her home and Robyn begins to think the two cases are connected. But how? The man is keeping a secret. As the body toll rises, DI Carter races the clock to find out what secret he was keeping and why it led to his death.
This book was a great read. I found it to be a little bit more difficult to follow than the previous books in the series. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and their brief appearances here and there had me flipping back through the pages to remember who they were and which people they were connected to. There are a couple of cases going on at the same time along with background stories. Overall, a good read. It keeps you on your toes.
I received this book through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley.com, to Bookouture, and to Carol Wyer for this excellent opportunity.
As always, this was an excellent installment in the DI Robyn Carter series. I can't put these books down! I love Robyn and all the supporting characters. You get so attached that you want to read the next book right away! I'm really intrigued by the mystery surrounding Davies and his boss. I love how Robyn is settling down with a cat and how her relationship with Amelie continues to flourish. In this book I actually liked the flashbacks to Liam's life and how you could see his tragic beginnings. If you like "dark," suspenseful books, with a twist, then I highly, highly recommend this series.
Book 4 in this series and it doesn't disappoint. A little too many flashbacks for me, which I found unnecessary. A good addition to an excellent series.
THE SILENT CHILDREN is book 4 in the DI Robyn Carter series, by author Carol Wyer, a serial-killer thriller with a twist. I have read the first three books in this series and loved them, so now plan to read the remaining two books in the series.
There are currently 5 books in the series that include:
1) Little Lost Girl
2) Secrets of the Dead
3) The Missing Girls
4) The Silent Children
5) The Chosen Ones
A little boy stumbled across a man in a car with his “swollen tongue hanging from his mouth”.
A man is found shot dead in a local park. On his phone is a draft text: I can’t keep this secret any longer. The recipient is unnamed. The child was horrified.
DI Robyn Carter and her team are assigned to the case.
Then a woman is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her staircase, and a seemingly insignificant detail in her stepdaughter’s statement makes Robyn wonder: are the two bodies are connected, and has the killer only just begun? Robyn suspects both were murdered by the same person.
When another body is discovered on a golf course…an apparent heart attack, Robyn is sure this is the work of a serial killer. She realises she’s in a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again. But just as she thinks she’s closing in, one of her own team goes missing.
First of all, if I had to compare this novel against the previous three novels in the series, this would be my least favourite. I found this a long slow-paced novel, with so many characters to remember and keep track of, I found myself taking notes, which slowed down my reading speed, and took away from the enjoyment of the book. But most of all (without giving any spoilers) after finishing book 3, I was eagerly waiting for action regarding the explosive cliffhanger revealed at the end of book 3…but to no avail. I can only hope that it will be addressed in book 5.
I really love this series and the characters come alive on the page. Looking forward to book 5.
Many thanks to my favourite publisher, Bookouture via NetGalley for my copy.
A young boy on a Gruffalo hunt comes across a body in a car - Henry Gregson has been shot while composing a text to someone. The text indicates he was going to reveal a secret. His wife and friends have no idea why someone would want to kill Henry. Then a young woman is killed in her own home and Detective Robyn Carter and her team start finding connections between her and Henry. A great story from start to finish - I really love this series.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Carol Wyer for the ARC in return for an honest review.
This is one of my absolute favorite books from Carol Wyer! She has me completely hooked on her series and i am even more excited about the next book!
As usually Carol ALWAYS wows me and keeps me on my toes with this series and this book is no different! It was only more intense that it has been before! With each installment there is always something new and exciting going on in the DI's life, and it doesn't stop there.
With each day the DI's life becomes more and more questionable when it comes to her ex fiance who is supposed to have died. but something shows up and proves her otherwise. She constantly is questioning what happened the day he was pronounced dead and if it was even possible that he lived. But she knows something is wrong with what happened.
But with everything that is going on she has to make sure that she finds justice for the silent children that she is looking for.
She left this book with such a cliffhanger and so many questions I am anxious to see what happens in the next installment!
A dead body found in a local beauty spot starts a chain of events that leaves Robyn Carter and her team baffled. Dead bodies are mounting up and she's sure they are linked but how? The links are tenuous and any imagined motive even more so. All she knows is all the victims were keeping secrets and their silence killed them....
What more can I say about this series? I've praised it so often I'm boring myself! But Robyn is up there with my favourite detectives and this doesn't disappoint. As always I was hooked from start to finish. The progression of Robyns questions about her husband's death is really gripping but doesn't intrude too much on the main story. All in all a great addition to the series.
It just wasn't a good read for me, not bad but not enough to make me go pick up more.
Book 4 has left me confused and a bit frustrated. Those of you that have read it will understand why, and I don’t want to give away any spoilers.
Thanks to Bookouture for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely love Carol's books and love the character Robyn and her relationships with her partner and her colleagues. Usually the books have me gripped from the first chapter but this one was not as easy to read. I just found the other characters in the books a bit boring and it seemed to take ages to get to the end. A shame but will not stop me reading this author
fan-flipping-tastic thrill ride of a book! I was hooked from page 1 and could not put this down, until I found out what had happened! Can not recommend this enough!
This is already the fourth book in the DI Robyn Carter and bloody hell, they just get better. This book continues from the previous book in terms of Robyn's personal life, but it does read nicely as a stand alone as well I think. The book ended in such a way, that I sincerely hope there is a next book. It is highly recommended.
Not my favourite of the DI Robyn Carter series. The police procedural portion of the novel drags on and on and the flashbacks while depressing appear to have no relevance to the ongoing investigation. Of course the hopeless situation alluded to in the flashbacks does come into play in the present day murders but it left a lingering sadness rather than an aha moment. .Every lead Robyn and her team of detectives follow delivers more questions than answers. The red herrings thrown at the reader could fill a bucket. I don’t remember reading a novel with so many suspects, both male and female, who just happen to wear size 10 shoes.
The cliffhanger ending in book 3 remains unresolved. The distraction this creates for Robyn makes her appear weak and indecisive at work. My biggest disappointment was with this books version of Tom Shearer. I was (finally) beginning to warm to Carter’s nemesis in the last novel because the author allowed some of his basic humanity shine through. In this book Tom is back to his old irritating and obnoxious self. Too bad as the phantom Carter keeps searching for does not seem worth the effort.
