The Robyn Carter series continues to be among the best out there for fans of taut mysteries with great plots and even better characters.
I stayed up late into the night (AGAIN) to finish it!
This time, DI Carter is handed one case, then another - and both stall. Then she notices a thin connection between the two people. Are the killings related? As more bodies are found, Robyn and her team must figure it out before they let a killer slip through their hands.
The book is part of a series, but could be read as a stand-alone, although some of the main characters’ have storylines that carry over. But the central mystery is self-contained.
I love how multifaceted the plot was; there was so much going on, there’s no time to be bored or figure things out before the moment the book reveals them. But not too much - things were smooth and wrapped up nicely.
Plus, the subplots involving the Carter team remain good as well. I’m already anticipating the next book so I can see what happens next (there’s a bit of a cliffhanger there!)
Overall, I continue to highly recommend this series to all mystery/thriller fans!
This was a great read and had great characters. Highlights how circumstances can change people. Enjoyed it and would recommend.
In all truth I was going to go the middle of the road with a 3 star rating on this latest Carol Wyer, however overall I really did enjoy the storyline so didn't feel that was fair, BUT I do have a major niggle with this book that drove me mad! For those that are up to date with the series, they will be aware that book 3 left is with a cliffhanger regarding Robyn's husband. I was fully expecting that to be the basis for this book, but sadly the subject is only lightly touched upon and that drove me crazy! Other famous authors have dragged out such major plot threads but I really hope Carol doesn't do the same as I would be hugely dissapointed. I have come to really like Robyn as a character and leaving something so huge just doesn't fit with her and for that reason it bugged me throughout the entire book!
That small niggle aside the actual storyline for this latest release is a pretty good one and the story itself drew me in. When a dead body is found shot in a car park, Robyn and her team are on the case and before long it becomes a lot more complex. We see the return of DI Shearer as their team are forced to join Robyn's meaning their working space is overcrowded. The story features flashbacks which are intertwined at various points in the story and I found these to be a fantastic addition and they were done incredibly well. I was getting the background on the person speaking and all the while pieces of the puzzle are slowly slotting into place. We also briefly see Robyn's cousin Ross appear (relating to the Davies element of the story) and I couldn't help but be dissapointed we didn't see more of him.
Overall a meaty story and a decent enough installment in this great series. I am just crossing my fingers in the hope that Wyer doesn't stretch out the numerous questions over too long otherwise it fear it may become a lot less engaging. I am really looking forward to the next book though in the hope it delivers all the things I now need to know about!
Love this instalment in the Robyn Carter series. Each book brings the reader further into her life and those around her, alongside gripping murder mysteries. The author is quickly becoming one of my favourites.
I've become an avid reader of Wyer's novels, and this one fit in just as amazingly with the series as the ones before it!
I love Robyn. I never stop adoring her, trusting her instincts, and wanting to stick along with her throughout all facets of her cases. This novel also had the appeal of touching on her past with Davies, her fiance who was killed in action. Or was he? Robyn is starting to think that he might actually be alive, and her private investigator cousin, Ross, is helping her to prove it. Or to prove it's not true, if that's the case.
Wyer does a great job of giving background of the "villains" in her book, which often serves to make them feel more like real people who are making huge mistakes instead of just heartless villains. I love complicated characters and think Wyer does a fantastic job of creating them.
I love this series and will continue to read it for sure!
I enjoyed the first Robyn Carter book, but seem to have missed out on Books 2 & 3- I'll have to go back & sort that out I think!
I really enjoyed this one. A man is found shot at a local beauty spot. He doesn't seem to have an enemy in the world, everyone seems to have loved him, so who killed him? A woman is found dead in her home, but it wasn't an accident. There seems to be a very tenuous connection between them. Before long the body count rises. What do these people have in common and who wanted them dead?
Throughout the investigation we are diverted into an account of an abused child- what had this to do with the case?
This book keeps you guessing with interesting believable characters. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for this great read.
Carol, you have done it again! You have to stop leaving me on this cliff hanger...!
Readers/bloggers, if you have yet to pick up the DI Robyn Carter series I suggest you do TODAY! You are missing out on some amazing stories and an amazing writer. Carol Wyer in the past year has not only become a friend to me over social media but one of my most favorite authors to read.
Her writing is full of suspense, crime, passion, and cliff hangers. It's everything I want and need in a story. Robyn Carter is hands down my hero. Which I've said before but I'll keep saying it from here on out. Her character is determined to not only catch the bad guys but to make a difference in the community and it other people's lives that she is a part of.
While Robyn has been fighting crime and solving murders she has a case of her own that hits a little too close to home in this novel. I have been waiting since book one for this "event" to happen and after reading book four I don't what outcome I'd rather read.
Looking inside the story and the relationships that are forming make me so excited to get my hands on the next book to see how much further those relationships are going to go. My favorite one right now (and it's not a total giveaway) is Shearer & Carter. It is so incredibly adorable how they both shy at the fact that there are feelings there.
Other than DI Carter my next favorite character who almost comes as close as the first is Robyn's cousin Ross. He is such a loveable man and willing to go above and beyond his job for Robyn. I would not mind if he ended up getting his own series either (hint, hint).
These books come highly recommended and please if you're looking for a book to read, start this series today.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Bookuture for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.* 'The Silent Children' is the fourth instalment in the DI Robyn Casey series of crime novels. Like the three preceding novels, it is fall of twists and turns. If you are looking for a fast-paced mystery novel, then you will not be disappointed. Once again, DI Casey is on the hunt of a killer, whose body count is increasing rapidly. As well as the excitement of the chase, Wyer provides a lot of background detail about the investigating officers that makes the book extremely enjoyable and the characters very relatable. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
This is book 4 in the Detective Robyn Carter series and it just keeps getting stronger. The plot is very clever and intricate, it kept me interested right to the end. At times the pace was a bit slow and the characters were many and complex. I would have loved to see more of Carter's personal life being developed as this is fast becoming one of my favourite series. It can be read as a stand alone but i would recommend starting with the first in the series. I do hope there is book 5 in the near future. Many thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture for my copy. i reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.
Another great thriller! I have yet to read the first two books in this series but not once have I ever felt lost. And,yes, I will get to the beginning of this series--eventually . This book Robyn finds herself solving a murder that just confuses her more than anything . There appears to be no reason why this particular murder happened but ,of course , bodies start piling up. Not only is Robyn trying to put the pieces together but she's also called her cousin Ross to help her find her ex, who is presumably dead. But clues are saying otherwise . This was fast paced, filled with twists that you don't see coming, and the characters really stand out. I'm ready for the next book!

Wonderful book which is fast becoming my favourite series. One of the most dynamic less characters
A man is found shot to death in his car in a park. A nurse is bludgeoned to death in her home. Are they connected and if so, how? DI Robyn Carter faces her trickiest case by far in The Silent Children. These are murders with seemingly no motives and the murderer isn't done yet! Robyn also faces mystery in her private life with clues that her dead fiance may still be alive. I finished this book in two days. If you like Angela Marsons then you'll love Carol Wyer.
Carol Wyer is my favorite author, and The Silent Children is the 4th in her DI Robyn Carter series. What else can I say, other than "Fantabulous"!?
At first, I was a little confused because I was expecting the book to be about children. But that doesn't make it any less of a book, once I realized it wasn't. Perhaps the adults are categorized as children. LOL
A little boy discovers a body in Cannock Chase of a man deceased in his vehicle, shot in the neck. Next thing we know, seemingly unrelated bodies start piling up.
The Silent Children was a twisty novel that had my brain everywhere, which I love. So why the four stars instead of my usual Carol Wyer five stars?
1. I didn't understand the title. I felt it didn't fit the book. That may just be a misunderstanding on my part, but my wee brain couldn't match that up anywhere.
2. Book three had a cliff-hanger about Robyn's former fiance, and I was hoping to hear a little more about that than I did.
3. My book boyfriend Ross wasn't much to be seen. I realize he's a side character, but he was involved a lot in the first three books. So I missed him a lot.
On the other hand, everything else was terrific! I love Anna and Mitz. Their romance is adorable. And speaking of romance. I even adore Tom Scherer, Robyn's cubicle crowding nemesis.
The storyline bounced back and forth between character histories and current investigation. I love when the past catches up with the present. Carol Wyer is very good at writing those types of stories.
And the storyline itself was different. Engaging. With a mix of creep-factor.
All in all, 4-stars doesn't mean anything wrong at all. Carol Wyer is still a 5-star author who amazes and entertains me to no end.
RATING: 3.5 STARS

"The boy studied the bruise turning yellow at the base of his neck. With quick fingers his mother tightened his tie, and pulled his collar high above it. Her eyes alone said, We will not speak of this...
Years later, a man is found shot dead in a local park. On his phone is a draft text: I can’t keep this secret any longer. The recipient is unnamed.
Detective Robyn Carter knows this secret is the key to the case, but his friends and family don’t offer any clues, and all her team have to go on is a size-ten footprint.
Then a woman is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her staircase, and a seemingly insignificant detail in her stepdaughter’s statement makes Robyn wonder: are the two bodies are connected, and has the killer only just begun?
When another body confirms Robyn’s worst fears, she realises she’s in a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again. But just as she thinks she’s closing in, one of her own team goes missing.
Buried in the past is a terrible injustice. Can Robyn uncover the truth before another life is lost?" (From Amazon)
I was a bit confused with the back and forth on the alternating voices for each chapter. Once I got the hang of it I started to see where this was going but didn't guess it completely right, so yay! I am down for the rest of this series ad anything by Carol Wyer.
Excellent story line and great main characters. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend.
I read this book in one sitting. I was totally gripped the whole way through. This thriller goes back and forward in time. There are a lot of twists. The whole book is really well written and I would definitely read more books by this author.
I've been a fan of the DI Robyn Carter series ever since the first book, and this is already the fourth book of the series published. Things are moving fast! Fast-paced, engaging, suspenseful and always a new intriguing mystery and bad guy to hunt: DI Robyn Carter never lets us readers down. And The Silent Children is without doubt another winner. While I think I ended up enjoying it slightly less than book two or three (for reasons I can't exactly put my finger on), there is no doubt this fourth book is still an excellent detective thriller that simply delivers. The case Robyn Carter and her team has to work on this time is another interesting one and wrapped in a big pile of secrets all there waiting for someone to uncover them. The mystery around the deaths and what is happening will keep you reading until you finally find out exactly what is going on... The Silent Children is without doubt a great addition to this series!
This is book 4 in the Detective Robin Carter series . I love this series ! The storyline was fantastic with great characters that were so alive . This book was full of spine tingling suspense and murder . I highly recommend this book if you love a good mystery . Thank you Netgalley and bookouture for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review .
This is one of those books that when you start reading you cannot put it down. Time is irrelevant as this book is so addictive. If you havent read this series of books you are missing out! Detective Robyn Carter is back. Two bodies, are the killings linked? Also Robyn is still haunted by the death of her fiancé, but is he really dead?
This storyline is so gripping and intense with plenty of twists and turns. I really liked the past and present sections which connected the cases. A brilliant series. I can’t wait for the next book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Another great read in this series. Really starting to get to know the characters now
