Carol Wyer writes a seriously addicting thriller. Anyone who has read her work will know within the first few pages that it will be an absolute struggle to put down one of her books. The Silent Children, the fourth book in the DI Robyn Carter series, was no exception. I sat down to read this one and had it finished in an afternoon.

As mentioned, this is the fourth novel in the series that follows female detective. Robyn Carter. I did read the first novel in the series, Little Girl Lost, and just never got around to reading book two and three. They are in my TBR pile, it is all just a matter of time! I am happy to report that this novel did read well as a standalone. Now, be warned, Wyer is teasing out some information about her protagonist’s personal life and I did receive some of the backstory from some other bloggers so I was pretty much up to speed. This doesn’t bother me at all, but I do know that this would bother other readers, so, if you want the FULL experience, then I would absolutely recommend reading the books in their order.

This novel follows the discovery of some seemingly unrelated bodies and the story of abuse from a young boy. Told in snippets to the past and Robyn and her team working in the present, I was on the edge of my seat! Red herrings and twists and turns aplenty, I was left in the dark until the A HA moment!

I am shocked that Wyer is able to bang out these books as fast as she does and with such finesse. The series appears to be getting better and better!! Now excuse me, while I catch up on the series and wait patiently for book five!

Firstly, many thanks to Carol Wyer, Netgalley and Bookoutre for the opportunity to preview this book. I wasn't immediately aware that this is one of a series and although I'm looking forward to reading more by this author, this can easily be read as a stand alone thriller.

It's a well written complex drama that involves serial killing, abuse and a missing (dead)? character. Yet, it's never depressing, rather I was hooked on the complexity of the story and characters and it held me until the end.

A really good read!

This series just keeps getting better with every book, I am hooked and can’t wait for the next book to be released. March 2018 is so far away.
We start the book with a young child finding a man dead in a car. Next a woman is found in dead at the bottom of her staircase. Are these two deaths connected? When a third body is found this confirms Robyn's fears that these deaths are all connected and she is out to find the killer before they strike again.
We learn a lot more about DI Robyn Carter throughout this book, with flashbacks into her past. The plot of the book is very enjoyable and keeps you just reading, I kept saying just one more chapter and I will put the book down but that never happened, it was more like 6 more chapters before I put it down or fell asleep reading it.
Book 3 left us with a cliff-hanger which I was so waiting for the answer to this in this book but Carol has done it again and still has not answered the cliff-hanger. There was a little more detail added through the book but she has still left us wanting to know. I hope the next book will finally answer our questions. Carol is making sure that her readers will continue to grab the next book. Smart woman.
If you are a lover of police procedurals/thrillers then this series is for you. I suggest if you haven’t started this series yet then start at the beginning so you can get a real understanding for the characters. You can read this as a standalone but I can guarantee you will want to read the rest as soon as you finish this one.
Another pager turning book that I would highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoutre for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.

This is book 4 in this series. I struggled badly to get through it, it was so slow and I couldn't connect with any of the characters. There are 3 murders and you don't really understand what is going on for a long time which was good but it was sooo long to get to it. It also had another plot in the story that carries over from the other books in the series.
I don't think I will read any more of these books.

This is the fourth instalment of the Detective Robyn Carter series. You have a man shot dead and then a woman found at the bottom of her stairs. Are these two cases linked? As Robyn starts investigating it appears that every person the team meets has something to hide.
You also get the back story of a young boy’s abusive past. Is this young boy now a victim or the perpetrator?
What about Robyn’s personal life is her fiancé really dead as someone is trying to make it seem that he isn’t. Robyn’s cousin Ross looks into this as she focuses on the case at hand.
You can read this book on its own but if you read the previous books you get the back stories and more depth to the characters.
I was hooked from page one and it did not disappoint, I can’t wait for book five.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Carol Wyer for an ARC in return for an honest review.

DC Robyn Carter is, as usual, overworked! She gets drawn into more than one case and has a suspicion there’s a connection. She also has more than a suspicion that her previous partner’s death may have been staged. This is a worry which diverts her from her work so she passes it on to her cousin Ross. The story includes flashbacks to the earlier life of one of the characters – and it’s well done.

I’m getting to know and enjoy these characters as we see a little more deeply into their lives. Robyn is patient and painstaking and this brings her results, but it’s always a matter of teamwork. Red-herrings pull them this way and that and the ending is memorable. a very good read indeed.

From my blog: Always With a Book:

My thoughts: Wow...this series just keeps getting better and better with each new installment! This is the fourth book in Carol Wyer's DI Robyn Carter series and it was so good. Between the cases, which are so twisted and dark that you can't help but get caught up in, and the top-notch character development - this is one crime-thriller series you don't want to miss!!!

What I love most about this series is just how complex and clever the stories are. Interspersed throughout the book we get snippets from the past of a little boy telling about the horrors he and his sister lived through - full of abuse and more. It's not until the very end that we find out just who this brother-sister pair is...and let me tell you - that revelation is quite the eye-opener! The present storyline has DI Robyn Carter and her team trying to solve murders that just keep piling up...and trying to somehow connect them. But to make matters more complicated, Robyn's team is forced to share their office space with DI Tom Shearer's team...for the time being.

The twists and turns this case takes are truly mind-boggling. It's a dark and gritty case and those short snippets from the past really up the tension and unease...you know that person is somehow connected to the present, but figuring out who and then why is the big question! This book is definitely intense and moves at lightning speed. It keeps you engaged and wanting to know how it's all going to play out.

Now, if you've read the previous book, you know that it ended with a rather big curveball of an ending and that thread was picked up and carried on throughout this installment. A few more incidents happened so that Robyn ends up getting her cousin Ross involved to do some private investigating, and yet while some is explained - one of which caught me quite by surprise! - we are once again left with another ending that has me desperate for the next book! I'm being a bit vague here so as to not give anything away, but also because if you haven't read this series yet - I highly recommend you start at book 1. There is so much character development that really carries through from book to book.

So, bottom line...this series is one of my favorites and with each book, the series gains strength. I hope the wait to book 5 isn't too long!

Even though we are now on book four of the DI Robyn Carter series it still manages to feel fresh and new along with having the ability to keep surprising me. This series just keeps getting better and better and this is down to Carol Wyer's writing and of course the character of Robyn. She is a determined person whether it is work related or personal. It's not just Robyn that works so well in this story but her colleagues add so much too. They work well as a team and together with Robyn they share a great dynamic.

There is a steady pace throughout as the investigation comes together with information slowly but surely revealed to the reader but also keeping some back to provide a wonderful tension. This is guaranteed to have you turning the pages especially as this very tangled web of secrets and lies begins to emerge.

As usual I will never make a great detective but this story kept me guessing and it really was like one big puzzle just waiting for that last piece to fall in to place. The premise was so intriguing with an intricate and well thought out plot with lots of suspects to keep things very interesting.

I read this book in two sittings and the last couple of chapters flew by with me desperate to discover the truth. Then comes the ending and all I can say is that I seriously need to read the next book. I was left nearly shouting out loud "no, don't stop there!"

If you haven't picked this series up yet then you really are missing out. It's not just the brilliantly clever murder investigations that will keep you intrigued there is also a fantastic personal story running throughout that will make you even more invested in this set of books.

Five stars!

With thanks to Kim at Bookouture for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

A good read. Definitely a whodunit, that kept me on my toes. Enjoyed it.

When it was announced that Carol Wyer was releasing the fourth book in the series of DI Robyn Carter I hotfooted it to Bookouture and slapped my name down for the BlogTour hosted by Kim Nash. The desperation to get my hands on a copy of The Silent Children was almost tangible, nothing prepared me for what was to come.

The cover of The Silent Children, fills me with anticipation, a little dread but a huge heap of intrigue, then there’s that opening chapter……

Did someone just open a cavernous space in my mind, I was sucked into the vortex of The Silent Children from the turn of the first page, weaving my way through the words, Carol provoked a response of shock and awe, messing with my head.

The DI Robyn Carter series could easily be read as a stand a lone, but I have read them in order. Each book builds another piece of the puzzle a possibility that we will uncover the truth or is this another illusion that will be kept tightly under wraps.

DI Carter is involved in investigating the death of a local man in an open and popular country area, not much in the way of DNA, but small snips of clues appear, do they bear signification to the latest death, a young woman she appears has fallen down the stairs. A thoroughly tangled web of deceit, screaming out of the pages for me to delve deep into the unknown.

I had a giggle or two when Carol wrote about DI Carter having to share a room with Shearer, I think its quite evident that Shearer has a slight soft spot for Carter, and I think he is hoping Carter will reciprocate. Plenty of niggles, squabbles and banter. But someone else has an eye for Robyn, or is her imagination.

Carol sent me on a wild goose chase, following blindly I tentatively tested each turn, each twist only to be spun around on the red herring roundabout. I was bamboozled, I scratched my proverbial itch, but try as I might Carol blew every suspect I had out the pages, leaving me in utter shock when I everything unfolded before my eyes.

The Silent Children tantalises the taste buds, leaving a surge of pleasure racing through your veins, the words flowing through every area of my brain, weaving in and out, smooth and explosive. If you haven’t tried any of Carol Wyer’s now’s the time, grab a copy, start at the beginning and follow DI Robyn Carter and see if you don’t fall for Carols intense story telling.

Thank you to Bookouture, Carol Wyer and Kim Nash for an amazing Blog Tour, utterly amazing. Id like to that everyone involved for the advanced readers copy of The Silent Children in exchange for an honest review.

The Silent Children is the fourth book in the Robyn Carter series For those of you that follow my reviews will know I am a massive fan of this series. Which actually only started this year in 2017 It is amazing to think that the author has written four books in only one year! Has always I will be totally honest and The Missing Girls is still a firm favourite of mine out of the four books. I couldn't wait to get stuck into The Silent Children after seeing that fabulous cover.

In this story we catch up with Detective Robyn Carter on a new case when a man is found shot in a park and then a nurse is found at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood But what is the connection between the two victims?! Then a third body is found can Robyn and her team find the killer because they strike again?

Like the previous books this one starts off with a cracking prologue that will leave you wanting more. There are quite a few characters to keep up with this story making it harder to guess who the killer was. I must admit I didn't have a clue. I love the alternating chapters between the case and the flashbacks which builds the story up. It’s a tense and original plot, but I would of liked more dark and twisted. I did feel it was missing that compared to the first three books.

This is a series not to be missed I simply love Robyn, her background is so intriguing I really want to know more. I cannot wait to see what is in store for her next.

The Silent Children will have you guessing from start to finish which I highly recommend giving it 4 stars.

Thank you to Kim Nash at Bookouture for inviting me to take part in this fab tour.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ebook copy in exchange for my honest review!

Guys, if you haven't read Carol Wyer, then you need to fix that now. I'm amazed that all of her books have been equally suspenseful, thrilling, and addictive. THE SILENT CHILDREN is book 4 in the DI Robyn Carter series and just like the preceding three books, this one did not disappoint! Robyn is back and with another gruesome case - can she find the killer before it's too late?

Wyer brings us back and forth from the past to the present as Robyn faces a new serial killer on the loose. A man is found shot to death in the park with an ominous text on his phone, "I can't keep this secret any longer". The recipient was unnamed. DI Robyn Carter is on the case, and it's proving to be a difficult one. With little evidence, they're having a hard time progressing.

When more bodies start to turn up, Robyn realizes they're dealing with a serial killer and they need to solve the case soon - before more bodies are found. In a twist of events, a member of her team disappears. The pressure is on to unearth a terrible secret in order to save them.

The intertwining storylines, past and present - Carol knows how to bring the reader on quite the adventure. This could be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend picking up the other books in this series. Not only because they're just as thrilling, but because then you can get acquainted with Robyn Carter.

Overall, this is a strong continuation in the series and I don't see any stop in sight! Thank goodness, and there was definitely a hint at a book 5 (don't keep up waiting too long!). If you want a good police procedural that isn't too heavy on the technicalities of the investigation then this will be perfect for you. It's a page turning thriller with a great female lead!

I give this one 5/5 stars!

Whoa! As with all  of the books in this series, I did not see that coming!

I adore the twisty, turny, whodunnit style that Carol uses in these books. Her characters are rich and incredibly powerful, and with that, we are drawn deep into a dark world. The Silent Children is the very definition of a page turner, as I actually read 75% of the book in one go. I had to find out what happened. I couldn't stop until I reached the end. Even now though, I am anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series.

DI Robyn Carter is an amazing character, a real role model. Her strength and courage are admirable and she has me cheering for her with every turn of the page. The supporting officers are a great group too. I especially like Anna and Mitz.

Overall, I would say that if you're looking for a gripping, gritty series, this is absolutely it!

The Silent Children is a thriller with numerous twists and turns which keep the reader guessing until the very end. Secrets abound and only clever police work can unravel the messy tangles of people's lives. There is another intriguing mystery within the story which remains unsolved, but promises to be a continued theme in future books. I will be looking out for more Detective Robyn Carter books! Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.

Oh Carol Wyer, you adorable tease and amazing writer, whatever am I going to do with you?! Guys and gals, if you have read this series, then you know that ending of The Missing Girls was a jaw dropper and I couldn't WAIT to get my hands on this, book four, to see where she was going to go with the story line. Little teases and prods to book 3 found me continually turning pages to try and figure out if I'll get any answers. CAROL, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME?!

She does what she does best, and that is bringing in multiple characters with a new mystery to solve and still expounding on Carter's life as we race to find the killer with her. I love her rhythm of past to present. This time we see a boy and girl who are abused at home and watch them grow from various chapters. The present shows a body count piling up while Carter tries to piece them together... all the while trying to piece her life together as well. (And who doesn't love a cat named Schrödinger??) I really want to be vague about everything because while you could conceivably read these as a stand alone in terms of the case at hand, you really want to read these books in order to get familiar with Robyn Carter and her life. It's well worth it, I assure you.

Another page turner that any police procedural and thriller lover will enjoy. I highly suggest you get on this series. So far, Wyer has done no wrong and I can only see this series continuing to grow and take further hold on my soul. 🤣 That ending again... uff, another teaser. I was really hoping for just a little bit more from this plot line. It does its job well though - you KNOW I'm keeping my eyes peeled for book 5 and no on will stop me!!

4.5 stars from me!

DI Robyn Carter is back with a bang along with her entire team. And what a team she has! Each one works diligently to bring the case to a close. The cohesiveness of such a team is wonderful to see. There is genuine respect and great camaraderie. The investigation is bang on, and when the points start getting connected as the book progresses, there was only me going — oh yeah.. why didn't I see that? I would have never guessed such a plot.
This is Carol Wyer's fourth book in the Robyn Carter series, and she has done it again. Created an outstanding piece of work where investigation is built up part by part thoroughly, and every clue is followed up.
The story is an investigative thriller. A man shot dead in his car with a half written message on his phone + a nurse dying of a blunt force trauma to the head + a man having a cardiac arrest of the golf course = 3 unconnected deaths with Robyn investigating all three separately and then jointly. What is the common factor between the three murders?? How do the clues add up when there was hardly any?? What is the motive of all the 3 deaths?? How many more will there be till Detective Carter makes her discovery??
There is also a parallel story which increases the inner need-to-know-now curiosity. This story runs from childhood to adulthood. Who are the kids as adults now?? And how do they connect to these murders??
To add oil to the already lit curiosity flame, Carol has created a lovely mystery in DI Robyn Carter's personal life and this does nothing but whet my appetite for more of her books.
The best part of Carol's book is every step of investigation is written thoroughly and she doesn't focus on the macabre. Most of the thrillers available in the market now, have writers describing a murder scene or a torture scene in such detail that it reads more like a post mortem report. Such books put me off. But Carol's way of writing brings the scene to light without making it icky. This was classy!!
There are a few niggles for me, when the investigation turns intense, there are too many characters all of a sudden, and then it requires total concentration to recollect the parts the characters play. I still had some unanswered questions regarding certain characters at the end of the book.
In saying this, I do declare that Carol has written a delicious classy thriller (as always) where every scene is like a jigsaw puzzle which DI Robyn Carter tries to fit together till the final picture emerges. And it always is a different, shocking ending. In this book too, she leaves me in blinding eagerness to read her next book, with her lines on the last page...
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

If you’re a new follower you may not know that this series is one of my absolute favorites, I’ve read and loved them all. I highly recommend starting at the first book and catching up as soon as possible because they’re SO good and you really need to read Robyn’s backstory to appreciate how excellent they are. The order is Little Girl Lost, Secrets of the Dead, The Missing Girls then this one, so get cracking and add them to your Christmas list!

Wyer is a clever lady and I love her formula of inserting chapters pertaining to the case via flashbacks that she uses in each book. This time, an unknown boy is telling the story of his terribly sad life full of horror and abuse. The addition of these snippets in between chapters from Robyn and team gave this such a dark, harrowing and gritty feel that worked so well for me. Per usual there are several plot threads to keep track of and again, as always this has a highly complex storyline that I never could quite figure out, Robyn sure is a better detective than me 😜

Wyer is beginning to be the queen of curveballs and this was no exception, especially as it relates to Robyn’s personal life. I’m being purposefully vague in case you haven’t read the previous book but she’s torturing us readers by giving us a tiny piece of the puzzle and then moving on. I LOVE IT! Keeps me on my toes and makes me all the more eager for the next book. Fans of police procedurals/thrillers that haven’t read this are truly missing out, they’re fast paced, exciting, shocking and fantastically well written.

Cor! Way to hit the ball out of the park!

The DI Robyn Carter series is one of my favourites and I realise I say this quite a bit but it's not my fault there are so many good ones out there! I can't believe we're already at book four and I do heartily recommend you start with the first book so you get to know Robyn and her team and an especially intriguing background story.

Now, if you have read the previous ones and you're hoping for some sort of conclusion after the mind-blowing ending of book three, weeeell, let's just say Carol Wyer has this teasing thing down to an art. There are some breadcrumbs, some clues but the focus is more on a truly fabulous murder investigation. It's pure torture but it's also awesome and a surefire way to keep me coming back for more.

As for the investigation, a man is found shot to death at a local park. By all accounts, he seemed to be a much loved person so why would anyone want him dead? When a second person is found murdered, Robyn wonders if these cases are somehow connected. But how? Cue an incredibly complex and multi-layered plot that had me guessing until the end. With a combination of utterly heartbreaking, harrowing chapters dealing with abuse set in the past and the investigation in the present, I was absolutely gripped! For the longest time, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on and I will always love an author who manages to do that.

As if investigating murders and bumping into dead ends all over the place wasn't enough, Robyn and her team are also dealing with some unwelcome guests when they are forced to share their office space with Shearer and his team. That can't possibly go well, can it?! Again, as in the previous books, I'm loving these team dynamics, the diversity and the banter.

If you're not reading these books, you are missing out and I strongly urge you to correct the error of your ways! This is an absolutely fantastic series which just keeps getting better and better. This latest instalment is immensely gripping and compelling and dare I say, the best one yet. I so can't wait for the next one!

Greed. Betrayal. Secrets. Lies. All components of a compelling plot.

Cannock Chase in Stafford: A 33 year old male, Henry Gregson, has been found shot dead inside a car. With little evidence to go on, DI Robyn Carter and her team -- Mitz, Anna, and David -- begin the tedious and painstaking investigation that they hope will lead to the killer. Days pass without much progress when a second victim, Tessa Hall, is found dead on her kitchen floor. Are the two murders connected? Then, Anthony Hawkins drops dead on a deserted golf course in the early hours of a Saturday morning. Did these three people know each other? Every single person that the police interview seems to be hiding something, and Robyn cannot figure out if these deaths are the result of actions by a single perpetrator since Hawkins had a heart attack. Yes, indeed, there is a relationship, but DI Carter can't seem to work it out.

Mostly a police procedural with the solving of the case the main focus, there is a lot going on in this complicated narrative. Included are chapters from the POV of a child describing his life with his sister and the abuse they suffered. You know it has something to do with the "why" of what has happened, but it's very unclear. Until it isn't. I figured out where this was going fairly quickly but it took quite a while for me to understand the motive behind it all because of the many characters and their relationships.

As far as Robyn -- this is the first in the series I've read, and it's #4, so I've missed a lot of the backstory and it did affect my whole perception of her and I wish I'd started with #1. I felt like I came into the middle of something that everyone else knew and I didn't! She's definitely a character I would like to know better, and I sure hope she gets some resolution to her personal situation that seems to be occuppying a lot of her time, emotion and energy beyond the job. The other members of the team show potention for a lot of development as well. I'll probably try to find the first 3 books in the series at some point. I'd definitely read another in this series because this one ended with a bit of a cliffhanger and I just hate an unanswered question!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC of this novel to read and review.
