I would like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Silent Children’, the fourth in the DI Robyn Carter series written by Carol Wyer, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The body of Henry Gregson is found on Cannock Chase after being shot through the window of his car, then Tessa Hall is found dead in her home. Soon after, Anthony Hawkins dies of a heart attack on a golf course, but is it a heart attack or something more sinister? DI Robyn Carter and her team have the task of finding what links the victims before the killer has the chance to kill again.
Meanwhile, Robyn is struggling to come to terms with the death of her fiancé, Davies, and enlists the help of her cousin Ross when she’s unable to make any headway in finding what happened to him.
‘The Silent Children’ is yet another thrilling and heart-stopping novel Carol Wyer has written. The plot is involved with lots of twists and turns, and the characters are authentic. Just as I think I’ve worked out who the killer is, another red herring gets thrown my way! Wyer has to write a fifth in the series as she’s left so many cliffhangers – what happened to Davies, and who’s the person standing in the shadows watching Robyn’s every move? This is an excellent crime thriller and one I can guarantee will keep the reader up all night.

Brilliant, as always! This author never fails to deliver strong, gripping stories that are also emotional and topical, making you think and care about the characters. A wonderful series that keeps getting better. Fabulous and very highly recommended. I cannot wait for her next.

Another Detective series with a female lead, but well worth a read.
This is the 4th book in the DI Robyn Carter series by author Carol Wyer but my first taste and after enjoying this book I will be looking to read the others. There are quite a lot of characters in this book and it took me a while to remember who was who but I recommend that you don't let that stop you reading this book.
DI Robyn Carter is asked to investigate the murder of Henry Gregson whose body was discovered by a child out on the Gruffalo Trail in Cannock Chase. Henry who appears to be a well liked man was found shot dead in his car by the young child. When a woman is found in dead at the bottom of her staircase a seemingly insignificant detail in her stepdaughter’s statement makes Robyn wonder if the two bodies are connected, and if the killer has only just begun? A third body confirms Robyn's fears and she is left to chase the truth before the killer strikes again.
A thoroughly entertaining read although if I am honest the plot does stretch my limits of what is credible.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Book 4 and the series just keeps getting better! Robyn Carter is one of my favourite characters.. she is strong, determined and never gives up. After the massive cliffhanger that ended the previous book I could not wait to read this book... and Carol Wyer has again left me wanting more!!

A fantastic book.. highly recommended. Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book to read and review

The Silent Children is the FOURTH book in the Detective Robyn Carter series, and what I find remarkable is the fact that every book in the series was released in 2017! Producing this number of books in one year you can't help but wonder how Carol Wyer is able to maintain the high calibre of writing as in the previous books, but I can say hand on heart she can, and she has. For me to continue to invest in a crime series, each books has to be as good if not better than the last and The Silent Children makes a worthy addition to the series.

So I told myself sometime ago that I would not start another woman detective series after already being busy with Lisa Gardner, Angela Marsons, Linda Castillo, etc.. but here I am having just finished the 4th book in this series and looking forward to the next!

Another great installment to the series and DI Robyn Carter and her team. The story behind this one didn't grab me like the one in the third book, I just connected to that story more. This got a little confusing for me with all the different characters. I "felt" for the two characters after hearing about their childhood. I am eager to read the next book in this series. I was so excited to be approved for this book! I would like to thank Bookouture , the author and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Silent Children, the fourth novel to feature DI Robyn Carter of the Staffordshire Police.

Robyn is puzzling over a photograph of her fiancé, Davies, purportedly taken after his death, and sent to her anonymously a few weeks ago when she is called out to a murder. A child out on the Gruffalo Trail in Cannock Chase has discovered a man shot to death in his car. The case is baffling as the victim, Henry Gregson, appears to have no enemies and to have been generally well liked although a bit of digging shows he was prone to lying. Is this a motive and what is his link to a second body he knew peripherally?

I thoroughly enjoyed The Silent Children which is an engrossing read with plenty of twists and turns. It held my attention throughout and I read it in one sitting, desperate to know what was coming next.

The novel has two plot lines, Robyn's dilemma about Davies which hums away in the background and occasionally bursts into life and the investigation which takes centre stage. It is also intercut with an unknown narrator's italicised story of his abusive childhood and the problems it cast on his adulthood. I'm not a big fan of these interjections and while it added a bit of mystery to the tale trying to guess his identity it is largely a stereotypical story of abuse and victimhood. It is, however, well done as I had no idea who he was.

I found the resolution to the investigation and the motive rather improbable but as they are not revealed until the end it did not mar my enjoyment of a very good read. It is a thrill a minute novel, not in the action sense but rather in the developments. With little to go on and their witnesses/suspects obviously keeping secrets Robyn and the team hare up and down blind alleys chasing the slimmest of leads and theories. It's gripping. In the meantime Robyn asks her cousin, Ross, to look into Davies' possible resurrection. There are developments but no resolution so I'm already anticipating the next novel to find out more. I'm finding this ongoing plotline as gripping as the main investigations and normally I hate cliffhangers but it's drip feeding at its finest.

The Silent Children is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

With this being the fourth book in the series, I think I should now read the earlier ones to get a better sense of the backstory. This is a good story though with two murders and then another body found, but not thought to be connected to the first two. Well, of course it’s going to be, I thought but the police take a little longer to work things out. The investigation is out at front but the interest in this book was the side and back stories which were actually bit disturbing and these strands do come together at the end but it’s seems to drag a bit getting there. Maybe I have to read the other ones to find out what the mystery of Davies was too - the lead character’s missing husband. So, my advice would be to read the others before this one, but for now, I’m off to Cannock Chase where the book is set as that sounds very interesting..

I can't believe I've just read Book 4, Book 4 all ready, Carol is certainly getting these books out.
Another great installment to the Detective Robyn Carter series. Personally I would say the books are best read in order, I feel it would give a better understand of things.
After the way book 3 ended with a huge cliffhanger, I was eager to start this one, back with Robyn and her team. I really enjoyed the book however I have to say that after the ending of book 3,
Book 4 throws Robyn and her team into a new case. A mans body has been found in a car parked in woodland, found by a young boy, enjoying a family trip out with his younger brother and his grandma. But what is the body doing there and who on earth could have killed him and what is the secret he is keeping. Is this secret anything to do with his death.
When a woman is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her stairs, it's a little while before this is linked anyway to the discovery of the mans body.
You are left guessing and second guessing through this book, I thought my detective skills had kicked in once over, but oh how wrong was I.
To take her mind of Personal issues, ( i'll not say what as I don't want to spoil it for those of you that haven't read it yet),. Robyn throws herself into her work and while doing that has asked her cousin Ross to look into issues around her personal life that are bothering her. I feel that as much as I know it has to bother her, she's done a very good job of putting it onto the back burner, maybe this is through fear of finding the truth.
A complex yet thrilling read, an interesting story and it does make you guess throughout.
I really was hoping to have some of my questions answered, unfortunately my questions were not answered and it means now i'm very eager to read book 5.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the Publishers, Bookouture, for this review copy given in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 4th book in the Detective Robyn Carter series. It can be read as a standalone, but obviously makes sense to read the previous books for better understanding of the story.

We return to book 4 having been teased with a huge cliff-hanger at the end of book 3, The Missing Girls. (I won’t tell you what that was in case you haven’t read it. If you have read it, you know what I mean!) I was keen to get going on this one, and the story starts with a bang with the discovery of a dead body in a car parked in woodland. DI Robyn Carter is thrown into this case where there seemingly are no leads other than a size 10 footprint. Robyn is also assigned to the case of a woman who is found dead at the bottom of her stairs. Something said by the woman’s daughter makes her think that the two cases are connected, but has the killer finished or will there be more bodies?

It’s great to have Robyn back! She works so well with her team in trying to work out what is going on in what appears to be a real complex case. Her usual team, DS Mitz Patel and DC Anna Shamash are back to help her and her nemesis, DI Shearer is proving to be a little bit too close for comfort, in more ways than one! The case is really confusing for Robyn, and there don’t appear to be too many leads. It is obvious though that there are a lot of secrets being kept and when it does get revealed as to what is actually happening, it is such a clever and well thought out story and twist.

On a personal note, Robyn is still plagued by what she discovered at the end of the last book. For this, she asks her cousin Ross to look into it for her. It’s great to see Ross again, and I think I’ve said it for the past 3 books – give Ross his own series! I won’t give away what happens with regards to Robyn, but safe to say that it leaves the way wide open for a great book 5!

As normal, Carol has written a corker of a book! For me, this series is going from strength to strength and I love the suspense in what happens to Robyn! It will definitely keep me pondering through to book 5 as to what will happen next!

Five Stars!

Another decent instalment in the Robyn Carter series. Secrets, lies, abuse and manipulation combine to produce a complex, fast paced plot that keeps both the reader and the police team guessing.
BUT Ross barely features in this book and Jeanette isn't mentioned at all,. For me these two characters and their dynamic with Robyn were what made this series stand out as not just another well written British police procedural novel. Their voices are very much missed and I hope they have a more significant role in future instalments.
Reads perfectly as a stand-alone novel.

Carol Wyer has done it again, words that spring to mind are spectacular, amazing and fantastic. I love this series and this didn't disappoint it was beautifully written, dark, emotional and full of twists I didn't see coming. I really enjoyed this book one of my favourites for 2017.
