Like all the Big Nate comics, it's a really fun and cute read. Definitely reading more of the books. :)

Thanks to Netgalley/Publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Loved the book. Although the book is targeted at middle school kids i think it is more appropriate for high grade elementary school kids. Quite a few take aways too so this is not such a silly book to pass couple of hours and forget about it.

Pictures are appropriate and add value.

This was my first BIG NATE book, and I've been missing out. Or at least my inner kid has...

Perfect for reluctant readers, the graphic novel element keeps the pages turning, and the jokes are just right for this age group. Recommended; I'll be checking out the rest of the series for those days when you just need a good laugh.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lincoln Peirce for allowing me to read and review Big Nate: Silent But Deadly. My boys are SO EXCITED for the release of this book! The countdown is on, and I know that they will enjoy it as much as the other Big Nate books that they have read. Another good one!

Given that my students are absolutely nuts about this series, I think I was expecting to dive into something a little more substantial. But, after reminding myself that this is a series that resonates the most with kids in grades 2-5, I think perhaps my expectations were a little too high. Regardless, I’m glad that I finally dove into one of these as it’s great to see what’s got my kids excited to read.

There’s lots to love about this book, and I have no doubt that it will be a smashing hit like all those in the series that came before it. The artwork is simple and cartoonish, with block colours and high contrast. It’s easy to read with a spacious layout, and the colour blocking is such that even those with colour blindness are not likely to encounter too many issues. All of the panels read left-to-right and not too much action happens in the gutters, which makes this a perfect book where new comics readers can cut their their teeth on the medium and gain essential literacy competencies.

I love too, how the comics are a series of vignettes with some being just one page, while others are more substantial. Sure, there are arguments for a sustained plot, but the smaller episodes mean that this book will appeal to both established and reluctant readers alike. Given the spread of reading abilities within the targeted age groups, it can be difficult to find books that appeal in terms of difficulty and structure level across a broader spectrum and this one absolutely hits the mark.

But I didn’t love everything about this book, and as a result I’m am somewhat saddened by what must be in all the others that came before it. It plays strongly on stereotypes and reinforced some (gender) roles that I find a little concerning. Sure, this is meant to be funny, and yes it’s great to have a prolific series that appeals largely to boys, but some of the messaging is… outdated. Girls can be smart without being angry, can be discussed without being attached to male partner (how does a work of children’s lit fail the Bechtel test?), women can be older without enduring a loveless marriage, boys can settle disputes without resorting to violence, and big words can (and should) be used without encountering derision. My feminist arguments aside, it is the fear of/ need to ridicule intelligence that I find incredibly concerning. To send the message to kids this young that smartness and popularity are opposing forces is unnerving.

With that being said, I know that I am probably going to read a lot more into the messaging than the kids ever will. It’s funny, engaging, and is sure to get a large portion of young readers amped up about diving in. And not all of the messaging in bad! I need to say that after my little rant about – there is a huge focus on creativity, friendship, family, teamwork, and personal growth. So in this I am willing to accept the balance if it gets even the most reluctant readers turning the pages.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Despite the misconceptions about the graphic novel format, it introduces incredibly sophisticated words and concepts to it’s readers – often well above the intended grade level. Yet, the subject matter remains enticing and the pages packed with bawdy humour.

Librarians, order in hardcover – this baby will be in high demand!

Celebrate your inner child with this new Big Nate & gang collection. This guilty pleasure is chock full of laughs and middle school hijinx courtesy of Nate & company. Nate's antics will have you in stitches. Whether it be his growling stomach or his amazing nose skills able to detect among other things classmate Gina's "silent but deadly" flatulence. Everyone's favourite 6th grader and his friends not only crack us up in this book; they also teach us some important life lessons including:
• REO Speedwagon tunes can fix any broken relationship
• Gift cards are a rip-off
• Weather forecasters cannot be trusted
• When playing Monopoly you should not cheat, but rather exploit loopholes
• Jedi Master Yoda, teaches us “always pass on what you have learned”
This collection is a barrel of chuckles regardless of your age, and is highly recommended to all fans of the Big Nate comic series.
Thank you very much to the publisher for providing a copy of the ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Silent But Deadly is a really enjoyable installment in the Big Nate series. One thing in particular that I love about this series (and other middle-grade books like it) is that it allows the opportunity for me to share a love of reading with my niece and nephew and that, more than anything, is what's so special about middle grade books; they open up doors for kids to share what is funny, special and meaningful for them. While Silent But Deadly brings lots of laughs, it's also a treasured way for families to share laughter, thoughts and, best of all, a good book.

Another collection of the long-running comic strip featuring a hapless kid who really should know better—about everything—by now, but particularly about girls and teachers.
“Silent but deadly” was not whom I expected, but for once I was glad it wasn’t Nate.
“Are loopholes anything like Froot Loops?” First answer: I wish. Second answer: I’m hungry.
Nate finally wins one, literally. “Scoreboard!” He’s also got a super nose, so it’s nice to see him not be the butt monkey EVERY time.

Thanks to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for allowing me to read an advanced e-copy of this book. The students on my campus love Big Nate. I can't keep them on the shelf. So, I have never read one until now. The writing is fluid and sometimes humorous. Keep writing, Mr. Peirce, the kids love Big Nate.

Another installment in the Big Nate comics series, this book has all the trademarks of previous books: humour, good drawing, fun characters, and interesting new plots. The Great Nose-ini was especially hilarious, punchline everywhere, as was the trivia smackdown between Francis and Gina, which added a little suspense to the story. It was another Big Nate classic.

A copy of this book was given to the reviewer through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Another great entry to the Big Nate canon. We get a little bit more story about Gina with a brief crush as well as a trivia competition between her and Francis. We also get a little Christmas time that I don't remember seeing in previous Big Nate books.

Four stars
This book comes out March 20

I've read a couple now in this series and they are my guilty pleasure when I just need a funny, silly book for kids (with a little junior high humor thrown in). The author does a good job of sneaking in a few teaching moments for kids and teens. Overall, they are just fun books for pre-teen to teen a week as young at great readers, like myself. Pick this one up to relax and enjoy the fun at and hilarious stories.

I would like to thank the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

My students have always loved Big Nate! They are funny, relatable, and easy to read. Many times my reluctant readers will choose Big Nate books and stay motivated to read for longer periods of time!

This Big Nate book is just as good as all the rest. I worry that someday the quality will start dropping 0ff, but it hasn't yet. The kids are going to keep this book going in and out of the library just as fast as all the previous books.

This was my introduction to the Big Nate series. My eight year old and I are big fans of graphic novels, and have read a lot of Stick Dog and Captain Underpants. Big Nate, in comparison, feels old-fashioned, reminiscent of the old Peanuts comics with a dash of Calvin & Hobbes. Like the older comics, Big Nate's adventures are largely non-serial, confined to a one or two page spread.

In Silent But Deadly, we follow Nate through Christmas festivities, school mishaps, banter with his friend/nemesis, Gina, and a short-lived campaign to become student of the month. I especially liked the vignettes of Nate in the comic book store - that's a scenario I can certainly relate to! His acute sense of smell was also funny.

There was a bit of dated pop culture (musical references, mostly), and some old-fashioned cliched sayings that made me wonder if kids would get them, or not. Other than that, I enjoyed this gentle, humorous collection.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC.

Another very good collection of old Big Nate strips - from him knowing any possibly determined smell (and more) to hoping to win awards at school. There are a heck of a lot of these volumes now, and a lot of these strips will probably end up in at least two books if they haven't already, but dammit - the level of consistent quality over the years has been remarkable. That would never happen in real life...
