Kappy King is a single Plain woman, who is known for her skill at making "kaps" that Amish woman wear to cover their hair. She had wanted to get married, but Kappy only wanted to marry someone who loved her as much as she loved him. Kappy's neighbour, Ruth Peachy is known for her dogs that she breeds and lives with her son, Jimmy who has developmental delays. When Ruth is found dead, it is assumed that it was an accident, but when it is found to be murder, Jimmy is quickly arrested. Kappy is sure it was not him and joins forces with his sister, Edie. Edie had left the Amish years ago and is shunned, so Kappy has to do all the talking. Can they find out what really happened to Ruth and who the culprit is?

I enjoyed this cozy mystery featuring Kathryn "Kappy" King. She is a strong female lead, who is not afraid to ask questions, or talk to Edie who is under the Bann. She even reads Sherlock Holmes. I liked that there was not a romantic storyline as it is nice to see that women don't have to have a man to be happy. Jimmy was a wonderful addition to this story. He has down syndrome, yet is capable and does a great job with the dogs. I am hoping Edie will be a regular character in this series. She is snarky, but does it in response to what she has dealt with during her life. She loves her brother and wants to do what she needs to for him. She adds some humour to the story. This was a fun, cozy mystery full of quirky characters. Both Edie and Kappy don't fit in with the Amish community, but it was great to see them develop a friendship and work together. I was kept guessing throughout the story and when the reveal came, the lights went on as I had my aha moment.

This is an Amish mystery and I loved it. It is so much fun. I loved Kappy and Edie. They work so well together. I had a lot of laughs throughout and did not want to put the book down. I am looking forward to the next book and hope there will be as much fun in it also. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

This is the first book in a new series by Amy Lillard. The cover caught my attention when I first seen it. This is a mystery with some unique, quirky characters. Kappy King is an Amish woman living in the community in Blue Sky, Pennsylvania. She's what you would call the odd ball in the community. She likes to stick to her self and be a homebody. She makes kapps for the Amish women in the community. One day she notices that her door is painted blue. She goes over to talk to Jimmy to find out why he had painted it. Once she gets there she hears Jimmy saying I'm sorry. As she gets closer she see's his mother is face down on the ground. Kappy doesn't know what happened. She's in shock because she doesn't think Jimmy would've done anything to his mother. What happened to his mother? This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is definitely a page turner. That's why you should read it. Your going to love it you won't be disappointed.

I received a copy through Net Galley and the author. All opinions are my own.

This is the first Amish Cozy Mystery I ever read. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I really wasn't sure how it was going to go. It had cultural humor. The characters were full of personaility and were fun to read. I did have a feeling I knew whodunit- and I was right. But it didn't takeaway from the joy of reading the book.

If the cover doesn't make you smile turn a few pages. No need to settle in expecting a long read. This one will have you turning the pages as you smile and maybe sometimes giggle as you try and figure out Who Dun It.

Kappy is a delightful and sweet character. This isn't your typical Amish read with a bunch of sweet romance. When her next door neighbor is found dead. The police quickly determine it was no accident. And just as quickly find a suspect and arrest the wrong man.

At least Kappy thinks it's the wrong man!

Kappy puts down her sewing and begins asking questions and sleuthing to find out what really happened and solve the crime.

With all the investigating there isn't much time for romance for
poor Kappy.

I am hoping future installments give Kappy a chance at a little romance.

This was a fun and relaxing and cozy read. I am looking forward to book 2.

I received a complimentary copy from Great Escapes Tours.

Kappy King bursts onto the scene in a delightfully quirky hot mess, and I loved every minute of it! She is one of the most unique Amish characters I’ve ever encountered (some of Jennifer Beckstrand’s characters would welcome Kappy with open arms), but it’s her interaction with her new Englisch best friend Edie that makes her even more delightful.

Edie and Kappy aren’t quite as opposite as one might first think. Though Edie is formerly Amish and under the Bann, she feels just as out of place as Kappy does. Whereas Kappy has come to accept her differences and embrace them, Edie still struggles to belong. Together, the two of them are like a Lucy-and-Ethel crime solving duo and the friendship that is born is truly endearing. Not only that, but their conversations read a bit like I imagine the Gilmore Girls would chat if they were (or had recently been) Amish. Lots of delightful sentence structure (I keep using the word ‘delightful’ but there’s just not a better word to describe all aspects of this read) and word choices keep the dialogue lively and thoroughly entertaining.

There are plenty of tender moments too, courtesy of this blossoming friendship and Edie’s brother Jimmy (a young Amish man with Down’s Syndrome) as well as Kappy’s maybe-boyfriend Hiram. I also enjoyed the subtle flirting and romantic developments going on with Jack and Edie; those scenes just had me grinning. But the crowning moment for me in the whole book is when Kappy looks at the culprit and says, “I know karate…My hands are lethal weapons.” It’s just so deliciously ‘Kappy’ that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud!

Bottom Line: Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper by Amy Lillard is witty, endearing, and just plain lots of fun. The mystery is well-plotted and kept me guessing until nearly the big reveal. The romance subplots are so subtle that it appeals even to readers who would rather just read a mystery but also satisfies those of us who like to swoon a little too. If you want a sweet, quirky and cozy mystery to keep you company on a cold winter’s night, this is a great choice! Perfect for fans of Jennifer Beckstrand and Jen Turano!

This is a wonderful start to a new Amish cozy mystery series. We get to meet Kappy who is an unmarried Amish women that is considered a little different by those in the community. She arrives home one day to find her door painted blue without her consent so she heads to the neighbors house who she suspects is the culprit. Much to her dismay she finds the man she thinks painted her door standing of his recently deceased mothers body. Jimmy has down syndrome and is misunderstood so the next thing she knows he is arrested for his moms murder. Kappy is convinced he did not do it and when his "banned" sister arrives they eventually agree to ask questions together. The story that follows is just full of little details about the Amish which I highly enjoyed mixed in amongst the clues to the mystery. the characters are all full of life and I find myself instantly attached wondering what was going to happen next. This is really a delightful cozy mystery that I highly recommend to fans of the genre or Amish stories in general. I really enjoyed reading it so I give it 4/5 stars and am looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper by Amy Lillard is the first book in An Amish Mystery series. Kathryn “Kappy” King lives alone making kapps for the women of her community in Blue Sky, Pennsylvania. Kappy arrives home from shopping to find her front door painted blue which implies an available maidel lives here. Kappy knows instantly that Jimmy Peachey, next door neighbor’s son with Downs syndrome, painted her door and heads over to talk with him. She finds Jimmy in the barn crying with his mother, Ruth dead on the floor. When the police arrive, they arrest Jimmy. Detective Jones states that Jimmy confessed to the crime. Edith “Edie” Peachey, Jimmy’s shunned sister, returns to town determined to find her mother’s killer and get Jimmy released from jail. Since the Amish will not speak with Edie, she asks Kappy to assist her. The pair start questioning the neighbors and then Ruth’s business acquaintances (dog breeder) hoping for clues that will lead them to the killer. Then the Mifflin County Animal Welfare arrives thanks to an anonymous complaint that they are running a puppy mill on the property. The next day animal rights activists arrive. This is just the beginning of a series of incidents. Who is doing this to them and why? Kappy and Edie need to work quickly before things turn deadly.

I enjoy reading Amy Lillard’s Amish novels and was eager to read her new Amish mystery. However, Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper missed the mark. I found the book easy to read and it had a nice flow. The characters, though, lacked development. In a way, Kappy and Edie reminded me of Laverne and Shirley with their antics (but not as humorous). It is mentioned that Kappy is eccentric, but I could not figure out why (except her how she conducted her business). Edie was the unconventional one especially with her manner of dress. I am thankful that the zany is mild and not over-the-top. Identifying the killer and the person behind the destructive incidents is child’s play. The book needed more substance and a feeling of community. Readers are given few details on the town. We are told about Hiram Lapp who owns Sundries and Sweets. Kappy was engaged to Hiram, but she recently broke it off with him (and I can see why with his dominating ways). Kappy feels she is unworthy of Hiram. Hiram talks several times to Kappy to get her to reconsider her decision as well as trying to deter her involvement in the investigation. There was also some flirting between Detective Jones and Edie. Jimmy was a sweetie along with the cute puppies (and the other adorable animals). There is a preview of Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper at the end of the book. Readers who are looking for a light, amusing cozy mystery should take check out Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper.

A delightful combination of cozy mystery and Amish romance. Surrounded by the simplicity and beauty of an Amish community and overlapped with strange ways of the Englisch.
Kappy King doesn't quite fit in. She was raised b a single aunt who also never quite fit in. Her aunt was the official kapp maker and now it is Kappy's place in the community
Jimmy lives across the road and in some ways seems simpler than most. He has a sister who decided not to remain Amish, so when his mother dies he is all alone with her assortment of animals.
Being forcefully questioned by the police, they claim Jimmy has confessed and take him to jail for his mother's murder. No one believes Jimmy can be guilty but unless Kappy and sister Edie can find real clues, it seems the police aren't looking for a true murderer.
I enjoyed the way two people who felt they did not fit in could become friends.
The romance did not detract from or overwhelm the mystery aspects.
Even under the strain of solving a murder, saving Jimmy and discovering motive, there is subtle humor in the dialogue. "True Dat!"

Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper is a delightful suspense by Amy Lillard. Kappy “Kathryn” King is the kapp maker and odd ball in her district. Upon returing home from a shopping trip, she find her front door painted blue, the color that meant she was single and looking for a husband. No doubt in her mind, she knows that her neighbor, Jimmy, is to blame.

Jimmy, a young man with Down’s Syndrome, lives with his mother, Ruth Peachey, across the road from Kappy. They bred Beagles and rent out their land to other Amish farmers. Upon going to confront Jimmy about her blue door, she discovers Jimmy crying over his mother’s dead body.

Jimmy’s shunned sister, Edie, returns home in time for her mother’s funeral. During the funeral, the police show up to arrest poor Jimmy. Edie and Kappy make it their mission to solve the murder and free Jimmy.

Amy Lilliard did a terrific job mixing mystery and humor in this book. The characters are well-developed and likeable. I definitely will be reading the next book in this series.

I received an advance reader copy of this book from netgalley in return for my honest opinion of the book. All opinions and statements expressed are strictly my own.

Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper is a delightful, cannot put down, fun book to read. Author Amy Lillard has started writing an Amish Mystery series and this first book is awesome. The characters are unique and the storyline is one of the best I've read. I don't normally read mystery of any kind, but I'm so excited for Book Two of this series. Thank you, Author Amy Lillard, for giving us an awesome book and a fabulous new series to read.

I received a copy from NetGalley. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.

Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper
by Amy Lillard

A brand new Amish mystery series releases today from author Amy Lillard. It takes place in the Big Valley area in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Here you will find at least 3 different Amish communites distinguishable by their different colored buggies and the way some men wear their suspenders.

Our main protagonist is Kappy King, an Amish young adult, who lives in Blue Sky and leads an almost solitary life since she broke it off with her beau. She would truly be alone had it not been her business of making kapps (prayer coverings) for the women of her church community. Kappy returns home one afternoon, after shopping in town, to find her door painted a bright blue. Kappy knew immediately who the culprit was...her twenty something neighbor, loveable Jimmy Peachy. Jimmy has down syndrome and most things he does is done in innocence. Kappy went to fetch Jimmy but when she arrived at the Peachy farm and Ruth Peachy's well know dog breeding business, she found something that stopped her in her tracks. Jimmy Peachy stood crying over the body of his deceased mother crying and repeating, "I'm sorry!". Was Jimmy capable of murder? Kappy was sure he wasn't, so with the help of Jimmy's sister, who had jumped the fence, the two join together to find the real murderer.

This is a great new series! The solving of the mystery leads to some interesting suspects, bungled attemps at crime solving, laugh out loud situations as Amish and Englisch work side by side, and the heartfelt love and devotion of a sister for her brother. I am already anxiously awaiting the next book...Amy Lillard has me hooked!
5 Stars!

A delightful and rather different Amish read, and oh so enjoyable and quickly became a page turner, and I didn’t want to put it down.
With a sad happening, a murder, and a handicapped son left without his mother, and soon ending up in the slammer, his words not mine. We begin an adventure, with Kappy King, a young woman the local Amish community thinks of as being different and mainly unseen. She soon teams up with the unseen or shunned daughter of the murdered woman Edie, and we are off on a task of finding the real murderer and freeing Jimmy.
Add to all of this a lot of adorable beagles, and you will soon feel your heart melted, as did Kappy, but who is out to destroy the family and their business? My guesses would change and then change again, and the eye witnesses were a lot like a group playing the old game of telephone. So, as you quickly turn the pages you will be guessing and changing your mind, at least I did, and you really may be surprised by who is causing all the chaos and worst of all a murderer.
I really enjoyed this read, and now I am looking forward to the next edition, coming soon!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.

Kappy is definitely ready for some adventure in her life= but not murder. An orphaned single woman in the Amish culture is the odd woman out and while she's got her kapp business and HAD a suitor, well, it's limiting. Little does she know that the murder of her neighbor Ruth will open her world when Ruth's daughter Edie, who has left the community and is under the bann, returns to Blue Sky. This is a dynamic duo. You know they'll find a way to exonerate Edie's brother Jimmy, who is challenged. The solution is not that complicated but there's one bittersweet surprise along the way. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I'm looking forward to more with Edie an Kappy (and Elmer).

Kappy King and the Pupper Kaper by Amy Lillard is the first book in An Amish Mystery series, and it was great fun. Kappy is a single Amish women, who finds her neighbor, Ruth Peachy, dead. Kappy is determined to find the real murderer when Ruth's disabled/simple minded son is arrested for the murder.

I really enjoyed this well written cozy, with all the quirky characters. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a very enjoyable read. A true cozy mystery set in Amish country with a strong sense of place and very character driven. The partnership of Kappy and Edie wouldn't work in another setting. They are great together. Kappy is a young Amish woman, still single and the only kapp maker in the area. After her family is killed in an accident, she is raised by her eccentric maiden aunt which explains Kappy's perspective on her life. She's not in the main stream of her community. When her neighbor, Ruth, a breeder of pure bread Beagles, is found dead in her barn and her son is standing over the body, the police add two and two and get five - they arrest the wrong person and would convict him if it were not for the team of Kappy and Edie. The meeting of these two young women is the best part of the story. It's Edie's brother in jail and, with Down Syndrome, it's the very last place he should be. Edie would be happy to investigate on her own but she has been shunned and her only reason for returning home is to help her brother. Edie turns to Kappy (real name Katherine) to do the questioning, Edie can do the driving.
The mystery is satisfying, the pace is good but the best part of this mystery is the teamwork of Kappy and Edie, it's funny, it's warm and I can can see great potential for their friendship. So, if you are looking for a new cozy series with strong, funny characters and a Beagle puppy named Elmer, pick up a copy, settle down and enjoy meeting Kappy and Edie - you won't be disappointed.

Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper is a fun, fast paced cozy mystery filled with funny colorful characters destined to make you smile.
While some folks in Blue Sky find Kappy a bit eccentric, she is a loyal friend and neighbor.
When her neighbor, Ruth Peachy is found dead, Kappy cannot believe that Ruth's son was the culprit.

Stepping in to help Jimmy, the mentally challenged son of the victim, Kappy reaches out to his sister, who has been excommunicated by the church and is banned from the Amish life.
Kappy refuses to shun Edie, Jimmy's sister and does everything in her power to prove Jimmy's innocence.

This is a well written story, filled with humor and laugh out loud moments. Edie and Kappy make a fierce team and it's Kappy's loyalty and love for her neighbors that makes her such a wonderful character.
Mystery fans will love to read the first in a new series by Amy Lillard.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

This was a nice, cute cozy.

I am a huge fan of Amy Lillard's writing. However, I was a little skeptical because this was a new cozy mystery series. I have read her Amish romance but wasn't sure what to expect with this series. Well, I shouldn't have worried. Amy Lillard brings a fun quirky element to her writing with Kappy. Kappy is the settlements kap maker. Considered odd by most, Kappy believes she will be single forever. When she goes next door to confront her neighbor, she finds Ruth Peachy deceased. When the police call it a murder, Kappy doesn't believe who they arrest could actually have committed the crime. Teaming with shunned Edie, they set out to find the real killer.

I love the quirkiness of the story as it shows how shunned Amish are treated. It also brings to light that some friendships can be formed between two opposites. This was a fun read. I enjoyed turning the pages to guess who the killer really was. I received a copy through Netgalley. This review is my own views.
