My thoughts: Who the Bishop Knows is an older book written by Vannetta Chapman. Bishop Henry finds himself in the middle of a crime scene when he's innocently buying a couple hot dogs in a drink for him and his intended to enjoy at the rodeo. A young Amish bull rider is murdered. The police are investigating but they are coming up with dead ends. They turn to Henry for help but Henry had seen nothing or had he? This was a page Turner that kept me guessing as to how it would turn out. I did figure out who done it but other things about it surprised me. If you like cozy mysteries you will love Who the Bishop Knows and the other two books in the series. I was given a copy free and all opinions on my own.
I think this is now my favorite series by Vannetta Chapman. I loved the characters and the story line. I can't recommend this whole series enough. Hated to see it finished.
Loved It!
I absolutely loved this book! Vannetta Chapman has such a way with mysteries. There is always plenty of intrigue to where the author has you sitting on the edge of your seat as you try to guess what is going to happen next. Her characters are always fun and often a little quirky. But a Bishop who solves mysteries? Yes, indeed! Once again Bishop Henry Lapp is on the case. The story has mystery, intrigue, a touch of romance and a message of faith. That is a perfect combination for a wonderful story that you definitely won't want to miss.
What an intriguing story. I haven't read the earlier books in the series, so I felt like I kind of jumped into the middle of everything, and was busily trying to figure out who all the characters were.
But. I found the story to be attention grabbing and an enjoyable read.
It's not my favorite genre, so it's saying a lot for me to say I enjoyed it!
Henry, the Amish bishop, had some unusual talent, and used it to help the local police solve crimes.
In this particular story, a young man named Jeremiah is shot at the rodeo.
Henry doesn't see what happened, but he puts his skills to good use to try to solve the mystery.
If you like mysteries, or cozies, or anything along those lines, give this one a try!

I have read all three of the books in this series and have liked each one. First, it is set in my state and I have learned a bit about the state that I did not know from the book. Somehow I never thought of us having a desert even though I knew we had sand dunes. I also have learned a lot about the Amish people from this series--a lot about what they accept and do not accept. I also found it interesting that the young ones do interact with the Englishers and that gives them a basis in what they choose for themselves.
While the killer wasn't much of a surprise, the method used was a big time surprise. It was a big time surprise. I would never have thought of it. I certainly do like Ms. Chapman's creativity. It makes reading her books a delight.
I received this book in exchange for a review and the comments are my very own.
Who the Bishop Knows by Vanetta Chapman is the next book in the Amish Bishop series. I am not normally a fan of Amish fiction, but I am always eager to read the next book in this particular series. Ms Chapman has created such lovable, real characters that feel like people you would love to know. You'll soon be hooked if you pick up this book! This book can definitely be picked up and read on its own, but do yourself a favor and start at book 1-- you won't regret it! I absolutely loved this book and hope there are many more in this series! I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher. These opinions are entirely my own.
This series has been so fun to read. The author has a gift for detail and makes her characters so easy to relate to. Henry Lapp has a unique gift that comes in handy . He can remember even the tiniest of details that he has seen. His ability to draw those details is a gift that I'm sure many police stations would love to have on their staff. I can't remember my own phone number sometimes, so this gift would be a treasure to have.
As the annual rodeo in Monte Vista, Colorado gears up, an unexpected tragic event happens. Jeremiah has everything to look forward to. He is in the rodeo hoping for a career when he is shot. I would immediately be looking for Henry to help pinpoint who the killer is. Funny thing about gifts, though. Sometimes they aren't as good as you think they are. Henry is upset that he didn't see anything but maybe he can convince his Amish community to speak up. Amish aren't ones to get the police involved in their problems so Henry is going to have to be on his game to get the killer behind bars.
The story is filled with intrigue and I loved how the author draws you in with emotional twists and turns. I have always like Henry and the love of his life, Emma. Will this case cause Emma to second think marrying Henry? His gift would be a challenge to have to live with, so Emma must really search her heart. Let's not forget about Jeremiah, our deceased in the story. What secrets did he have that could have caused him to be a target? I was surprised at who turned out to be the killer and why they did it. It just shows how creative the author is when you can keep readers guessing til the end. I'm sad to see the series end, but very pleased with the ending. It is a fitting send off for a series that captured the essence of unconditional love and forgiveness.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.
Bishop Henry Lapp, as characterized by author Vannetta Chapman, is everyone’s wise pastor rolled into their favorite grandfather. Usually, when I picture an Amish Bishop, I picture a disciplinarian, knowledgeable about the scripture, but serious and sober most of the time. Henry Lapp breaks that mold. His gentleness with his flock drew me in, and his willingness to listen to the counsel of his deacons before passing judgement was a breath of fresh air. I also loved how willingly he showed his love for Emma Fisher – holding her hand and hugging her, even though others were present to see. It was so sweet!
Book 3 in the Amish Bishop Mysteries series, Who the Bishop Knows, focuses this time, not on what Henry saw, but on what he didn’t see. Henry is a savant, of sorts. Due to a childhood accident with a baseball, Henry can draw pictures that are better than photographs, of things he has seen. His drawings were used in the first two books to solve at least two murders. This time, when Jeremiah Schwartz gets shot out of the saddle at the Ski High Rodeo, Henry was outside the arena in the food line. What could he have possibly seen there? Nothing! Unfortunately, Jeremiah’s killer doesn’t know that, and comes after Henry to prevent him from drawing.
Determined to “stay out of it”, Henry and Emma are nevertheless drawn into the investigation. As the amateur sleuths pursue leads the police haven’t seen, can they keep their families safe from a killer? What happens when Emma’s granddaughter, Katie Ann and her friend get caught up in the action as well?
Chapman’s writing style takes me back to my Trixie Belden mysteries days. Each step in the mystery is meticulously plotted to lead to the next one, and each character has a key role in the story. I also loved all the “Amish Proverbs” scattered throughout. Henry and Emma’s strong love for each other and their equally strong faith in the God who loves them, came through loud and clear.
While this book can be read as a stand-alone novel, I urge readers to also read the first two. I’m going to have to go back and pick up the first one myself, since I started on book 2. Meeting the characters and getting to know them is half the fun in this one. Some of them, including Henry, jump off the page and into your heart. This was a highly enjoyable series to read! I definitely recommend!
Book three of The Amish Bishop Mysteries, Who the Bishop Knows, created an enjoyable diversion in between projects I had procrastinated doing. The story opens with a death at the local rodeo. The bishop, who usually discovers the answers to crime through his photographic mind, wasn't there when the murder occurred. His vibrant, caring community trusts him and the longer the suspect is out there the more tension builds. He must rely on his drawings to see anything unusual.
You will find this book delightful as well as the characters.
I received a copy from Net Galley. I was not compensated for this review. All thoughts are my own.
Vannetta, you have done it again! You've kept me awake and on the edge of my seat. The bishop is once again in the thick of things and the things are not good. There is murder again. The Amish community is close knit and sticks by those in their faith and community.
The bishop has a special gift for drawing the things he remembers. Does the bishop have some insight into the latest murder among the books in this series?
This is one of the best series that Vannetta Chapman has written and I highly recommend it to readers.
I am rating this book 5 ***** stars.
I received a copy of this book from netgalley and Harvest House Publishing in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
Vannetta Chapman has written a very appealing series of Amish mysteries, The Amish Bishop Mysteries. “Who the Bishop Knows” is the third book of the series. I have read each one and am amazed at the convoluted situations that define each story. Although Bishop Henry Lapp is unable to use his extraordinary talent of drawing exactly what and who he has seen, in this murder case, it is nonetheless exciting to see how he manages to use his perceptions to solve the murder.
Although the English police and the Amish do not usually work together, in this instance, Henry and the Sheriff complement each other’s abilities in solving the intricacies of investigations. Henry must persuade the members of his community to give help to the authorities in order to find the person who is responsible. These mysteries of Ms. Chapmans definitely do not lack suspects. This is what motivates the reader to make sure to read every page until the end. There is something relatable to the case on every page.
I have enjoyed reading the Bishop Series and hope that Ms. Chapman continues to write in this vein. I highly recommend her work.

Who The Bishop Knows by Vannetta Chapman is a wonderful Amish murder mystery. It is the third book in the Amish Bishop Mysteries series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Once again Bishop Henry and Emma are called upon to solve crimes in partnership with the police department. It is all very 'Miss Marple' as the Amish duo do the thinking and the police department provide the back-up.
The Amish are community based. "We celebrate together and we mourn together." They are there to support each other. "Very few burdens are heavy if everyone lifts." This sense of community reaches out to the reader.
Friends are important. They support us in the good and the bad. We all need friends who are just 'there' for us. "Not talking... so much as sharing the burden of grief." In times of grief when words cannot help, a kind friend is invaluable.
We never know when our time is up - it is important to practice carpe diem. "The moment you were in was the one you had to enjoy, because there was no way to control what happened next." Live every day as if it is your last.
Vannetta Chapman employs the technique of pathetic fallacy as a storm mirrors the action.
We need to place our trust in God. We need to pray to Him at all times. He will hear and answer. We need to trust His timing. If we rely on Him, we need never fear tomorrow.
I am loving this Amish Bishop Mysteries series. All the stories are gripping and well thought out. I love the amateur sleuthing that gets the job done. These are fun reads and would make smashing Hallmark viewing.
I received this book for free from Net Galley. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Who the Bishop Knows by Vannetta Chapman is the third and final installment of The Amish Bishop Series. The “final” installment; that word sounds, well, so final. I’m not sure I’m quite ready to leave the Amish community of Monte Vista, Colorado. After all it was in Monte Vista we first met the delightful, but somewhat serious Bishop Lapp who mysteriously was able to draw, in exquisite detail, the things his mind saw. No, he does not have a photographic memory; it is different, something that began when he was yet a boy, after being hit in the head by a baseball bat. Unfortunately, in the small Amish community of his childhood, and even his parents, many were a bit frightened by this new gift, leaving his family with the decision of forbidding young Henry Lapp using the gift.
Fast forward, Henry Lapp an older (and single) bishop in Monte Vista; while this community was not the one the bishop grew up in, he continued to squelch this ability. He is well-loved, respected bishop who has a heart full of compassion for those who find themselves hurting or in trouble. It is this compassionate heart that leads Bishop Lapp to draw again in What the Bishop Saw when an innocent person is arrested for arson and murder. Again, Bishop Lapp is unable to resist the urging of God to bring out the paper and pencils in When the Bishop Needs an Alibi, when he himself is in the direct vision of law enforcement investigators when a young woman is found dead in a nearby Wildlife Refuge. Oh, and I dare not forget Emma; Emma and Henry had been friends for some time but something new is growing between them; could it be love?
I eagerly began reading Who the Bishop Knows for I just had to know what kind of trouble was going to find Bishop Henry Lapp this time. The state’s oldest rodeo is held yearly in Monte Vista. (I love a good rodeo; you?). This year someone is going to die at the rodeo; not by injury from the rodeo itself, but someone will die. How? A skilled marksman with a high-powered rifle shoots rodeo performer Jeremiah Schwartz, who, though raised Amish, had not yet joined the community as a member. His death hits the Amish community especially hard.
As the investigation begins, Henry finds himself at a bit of a loss; he was at the concession stand buying refreshments when the shooting occurred. He isn’t able to draw what happened like he had previously. Bishop Lapp begins by providing support to his members; with his astute understanding of people and human nature, things begin to capture his attention. And his special gift comes into play after all.
Who would kill Jeremiah and why? He certainly isn’t rich; this is an amateur rodeo after all. Nor is any one in at risk of losing their standings on the rodeo circuit. What is going on? Read Who the Bishop knows to find out. It isn’t who or what you might think it to be. And just who does Bishop Henry Lapp know?
Who The Bisop Knows Is one book that is full of Faith, which is what's I love about the series. It also toys with us with murder, mystery and most of all how the author involves the family. This author, you can tell she loves her characters because she leaves a piece of herself on each page of the book. The Bishop is so fascinating and if you don't know him you don't know what is his extraordinary gift he has that helps the police . I wish I had the gift that he has from GOD. The author leaves special touches and suprises just for you. So don't you think you should read it?
Another enjoyable story by Vannetta Chapman. She does a great job blending the Amish and English cultures allowing them to work together and learn from each other. This series does lean a little more to the Amish, but I love the interactions between Henry and the sheriff.
This was a very good story. I was starting to get an idea of who the killer was, but didn’t completely understand the motive or the means. I found the means very creative and interesting as I looked at the story as a whole. I also enjoy learning more about Henry’s gift and the mixed reactions he gets from the different people.
Although a book 3 you can read the books independently. I read book one but not book two. The author makes enough references back to the previous stories to understand why the characters feel and react to certain situations. But she doesn’t bog the current story down with those facts.
If you enjoy Amish fiction this is a winner, well written and moves at a good pace.
Who the Bishop Knows by Vannetta Chapman is the third story in The Amish Bishop Mysteries. Bishop Henry Lapp is attending the Ski Hi Stampede in Monte Vista, Colorado with his fiancé, Emma Fisher. Jeremiah Schwartz comes out of the chute to wrangle a steer and a shot rings out. Henry, who was obtaining refreshments, runs to check on Emma and notices Jeremiah on the ground. Unfortunately, Jeremiah does not survive the bullet wound. Jeremiah was visiting his grandmother, Ruth Schwartz for the summer to help her with farm chores, and he competes at local rodeo’s as an amateur steer wrangler. Who would want to harm Jeremiah? In the past, Henry has used his unique gift to draw scenes to help solve crimes. This time, though, Henry did not witness the shooting. Sheriff Roy Grayson will still need Henry’s help in speaking with Jeremiah’s friends and family as well as utilizing his observation skills and ability to judge a person’s character. They soon discover that Jeremiah had secrets and one of them could have gotten him killed. Can they catch the culprit before he harms someone else? Henry would like the crime solved before his wedding to Emma in three weeks. Come to Monte Vista one last time to help Bishop Henry Lapp solve Jeremiah’s murder and see the nuptials of this adorable couple.
Who the Bishop Knows is the final installment in The Amish Bishop Mysteries. It can be read as a standalone since the author provides details on Henry’s ability, his relationship with Emma, and the mysteries from the previous two books. I do not feel, though, that the author had to keep mentioning the prior mysteries (the details were repeated several times). Who the Bishop Knows contains good writing and fluid transitions. I found the pace a little slow in the first half of the book. The story was not moving forward. The pacing does pick up later in the book. The mystery was interesting, but the culprit can be easily identified. How Jeremiah was murdered was unique (modern and out-of-box). I have not encountered it in a book previously. I do wish there had been more action. The investigation, for the most part, consists of questioning and speculation. The one thing I did not like was the transcript sections (a transcript of police interviews). They disrupt the flow of the story. Those sections remind me of reading a script (static is the word that comes to mind). There is a significant amount of scripture in Who the Bishop Knows. I like how the author tied each verse into what was occurring at the time. It was lovely to visit Monte Vista and catch up with Henry and Emma. They are such a sweet couple. I have enjoyed watching their relationship develop over the course of the series. I am glad that Henry has learned to accept his gift. The ending of Who the Bishop Knows was just lovely and heartfelt.
Excellent story! Keeps your heart racing and your mind wondering what’s going to happen next. Love how unique the 3 Stories in this series have been but I also love how they are all connected from book to book. Each story builds on the previous in a great way. Loved the little bit of sweet clean romance. It adds just enough to make the story reach new heights. The characters are well developed and lifelike. Not fake. The series was wrapped up well.
I received a digital copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
Henry Lapp and his community in Monte Vista look forward to the rodeo every year. Although they don't really participate, some of the young Amish who have not joined the church have been known to take part. When the rodeo turns deadly for one, Bishop Lapp must find out what happened in order to keep his community safe? Will he do it in time?
Ms. Chapman combines the Amish community and mystery in such a way that the two do not clash. Everyone thinks that the Amish community is immune to the outside world. Her character development makes it so that the reader can relate and actually feel what they are feeling. I loved this series and look forward to more books by this author. I received a copy through Netgalley. The review was written completely on my own.
The Amish Bishop Mysteries have been an enjoyable Amish/Cozy mystery series. Years ago I used to read cozy mysteries and then one day I just stopped. I'm not even sure why. This series reawakened the interest that I'd had in cozy mysteries years ago.
Bishop Henry makes this entire series. The unique talent that allows him to draw anything with perfect photographic memory makes him feel like he's cursed. Over the course of this series, we see Henry accept his talent as a gift from God. His story is one of love and acceptance.
One of my favorite things about this series is the sweet love story between Henry and Emma. It is rare to find any story (Amish or otherwise) where a man and woman in their 60-70's fall in love. It's just not done. Which is a shame! I appreciate that the author shows that Henry and Emma are still valid members of their home and community.
Overall, this book flowed at a nice, easy pace. I had suspicions of who had committed the crime and a certain incident sealed their guilt in my mind. Solving the crime didn't ruin the story for me as the author managed to keep an air of mystery on how the crime was committed.
My only real complaint is that there is one character that has no resolution. I won't say who this character is as it would subtract one of the suspects. I would have liked to have known what happened to him/her after the mystery was resolved though as a secondary character, it doesn't detract from the star rating for me.
Though the series wraps up nicely, I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters. I'm not sure if I'm ready for the series to be over. Still, I look forward to future cozy mysteries by this author in the future.
This book was provided to me by the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. All opinions are my own.
I need to have a moment of sadness that we are leaving Henry Lapp and Emma Fisher behind. We’ve gotten to know them, and Henry’s gift in ‘What the Bishop Saw’. We saw the kind of man he is, the concern for his community, and the compassion for those hurting around him. In ‘When the Bishop Needs an Alibi’ we are drawn more into the faith of Henry. His compassion for others is still strong, his concern for his community is still strong. I knew coming into this last book that Henry and Emma had chosen to forge a future together in their golden years. I knew coming into ‘Who the Bishop Knows’ that it would be heart rending and emotional. It would be seeing them start their future together while also saying goodbye to this community. And of course, it would be a murder.
When I finished the second book in this series I had this thought that hid in the back of my mind. I couldn’t really make it into words until I started reading about Jeremiah and his murder. It came on like a light bulb! Imagine investing so much development and life into one small character who is only going to die in the first little bit of the book. The characters in this series are all so very well developed with amazing personalities and backstories and life, even the ones who are sacrificed for the story. I was stuck in the emotion of that, creating such a developed person only to eliminate them. Shh, yes sometimes I get mushy … let’s keep that between us m’kay? Yes, Jeremiah was sorta, or really, a toad nugget. He didn’t really draw out feelings of compassion. I didn’t know him yet when he was murdered but the picture that came out about him through the story was very much shades of gray, he wasn’t necessarily a good guy but he wasn’t all bad either.
Vannetta kinda kept me guessing a tidbit through the book. I was fairly confident pretty early on with who the killer was. I was certain(ish) about two thirds of the way in. The how though? Blew me away! This story had layers of different depths and potential outcomes and a few little surprises thrown in for good measure. I’m cautious to say too much and accidentally include spoilers. Let’s just say that I think this was my favorite book in the series (I know, I saw that every time). It kept me so much in the dark about a few things to the very end. I remain a firm believer that everyone needs a Henry in their lives. His faith, his patience, his wisdom, his encouraging spirit, and his compassion. All are traits that we need in our lives. Need in our friends, our family and even within ourselves.
